TIFF image problem

I am using an outside contractor to create some computer generated images for me. As is usual--especially for wide, exterior shots like these--the CGI part is placed onto an actual photograph. The two images are pulled into Photoshop and tweaked until they match. When the artist sends the files to me, however, the photographic background is missing. All I see in Photoshop and InDesign is the CGI "half." Curiously, when I place them in an AI file there is a background, but it is fuzzy and indistinct--like a preview file. All the files were saved as TIFF/RGB. I told him to use CMYK, but I was lucky I was getting TIFFs at all. The previous files were JPEGs! One was actually a JPEG that was enlarged in Photoshop to the resolution I wanted and saved as a Tiff.
One more thing, the renderings were created in Artlantis (a mid-level rendering program) and modified in something called "Paint Shop." All I get are what appear to be single layer TIFF/RGB files, not multi layer files. The artist insists he is sending files complete with the background.
Before I send him packing, am I missing something? Is it possible the background is there, just invisible to Adobe products? Or is it possible he forgot to link a file or some such thing when saving in "Print Shop"? Any help is very much appreciated.

Yes, I don't remember bit order ever being a problem either. I was just trying to give my contractor every benefit of the doubt before I cut him loose. I think what he has done is not include a linked file when he makes his TIFF. Just like in Quark, ID, AI or any app that supports file linking. I'm sure it opens fine in his program. Why he does not check it with some image viewer before sending it to me is beyond me.
This person has produced beautiful work over the years, but I think he simply has gone of the rails somewhere. These are rookie mistakes he's making. The file was not zipped and I've had some associates look at it with the same results. If no one on this forum is aware of some Paint Shop quirk then I have to believe that I'm at a dead end. I'll just ask him to send the photo backgrounds to me separately and I'll create the images myself.

Fixed: TIFF image display / import problems

Hello All,
I posted this in the discussion threads where I had previously discussed it with other members. But, felt that it would be good to share with everyone who is importing their photo's into the new iPhoto 6.
I, like many others, have been having a terrible time getting my iPhoto collection imported into the new iPhoto 6 program.
I have tried both the upgrade method (on a backup copy of my original library), and a fresh import of all my files.
Without fail, all of my TIFF images gave me trouble. Some looked like squiggly lines. Some looked like a diagonally distorted image (like you see on old Televisions trying to tune in difficult stations). And, some just plain refused to work.
All of my problem images look fine in the thumbnail (the library view). But, you quickly discover the problem when viewing the full-size image in the "edit" mode.
Some of my TIFF images are 30 megabytes in size, and many of them are smaller files of a more typical size. I found that the smaller files were just as unlikely to work as the larger ones.
And, while converting to JPEG may be an option, I didn't want to lose the depth and detail that TIFF offers (especially on pictures of documents / writing). The original TIFF images will offer greater detail when blown-up than compressed JPG files.
All of these images worked fine in iPhoto 5, and display perfectly fine in every other program. But, iPhoto 6 just refused to display them properly.
Well, I think I found the fix.
Today I downloaded the new iPhoto 6.01 update. But, that didn't fix the problem either. So much for Apple fixing it.
Anyway, I have been experimenting, and finally found a difference between images that worked and those that didn't.
The images that worked, have an ICC profile embedded in them from the device that created the image (in my case my scanner).
So, I set out to find out if simply removing the ICC profile would fix the problem.
And, through my experimenting, I found that if I opened the image in another program, and then exported it as either a TIFF (the same format) or a JPEG that the resulting image would open in iPhoto 6 just fine.
Further examination demonstrated that the ICC information was removed from the exported file.
As I understand it, ICC is basically an image color correction / calibration tag. It enables different devices to properly display and print the image with the proper colors.
Basically, each device has a color profile (scanner, monitor, printer, camera, etc.). This is to make sure that when you see something on the screen that it looks the same as when you print it out. Likewise, you want the image on the screen to match what the scanner and digital camera saw.
So, these are essentially conversion tables to make sure that each device properly displays or prints the image as the original source "saw" it.
Anyway, not wanting to manually strip this information from each file, I looked on the Internet for an automated solution. And, fortunately I found one.

The file you are looking for is "Mac Os X ColorSync Toolbar Script: Remove ICC profile". Click on the title just mentioned to download the script.
It is a Macintosh Script that you simply download to your desktop (or anywhere else you would prefer). It is in a Stuffit Archive, so you'll need Stuffit Expander to decompress it (basically the Mac equivalent of a ZIP file).
Once decompressed, you should see a "script" icon that is labeled "Remove Profile".
Simply "drag" your original files and drop them onto this icon / script. The script will then remove the embedded ICC information from the image file.
Once you have removed the ICC information from your image's file, try importing it into iPhoto 6 again. Then, see if it works
It is important that you perform this on a backup / duplicate copy of your original files. You don't want to damage your only copy if something goes wrong.
Now, one further note: If you do this, you may see the image looks different. In my case, the image is truer to the way it really looked when I scanned it in. The paper texture looks right now.
If you want to do this while keeping the image's appearance the same as it looks now, then here's another way:
Open the file in Apple's "Preview" program. This is usually the default image view.
Then, do a "Save As" or "Export" to create a new copy of the image. If you perform an Export, be sure to set the image quality high or you may inadvertently reduce your pictures detail (especially if you export to JPEG).
This essentially does the same thing. But, it will take more work if you have multiple images.
Using the previously mentioned script, you should be able to drag and drop multiple files in a group.
Anyway, I hope this helps the rest of you out.

I have an update:
It is definitely not a user account issue. I just completed a fresh install of OS 10.3.9 on my Mac Mini.
I performed a fresh install (on a freshly formatted hard drive partition), and made the installation as bare as could be for the sake of preventing potential problems.
I installed OS 10.3.9, and all the standard items in the usual OS 10.3.9 installation. I specifically left-out all the foreign language stuff, all the online programs (for other ISP providers), and misc. garbage.
I also left off all the iLife programs (every iLife program) that came with the restore disks. I even left-off the original QuickTime installation. My thought here was that I wanted to make sure that there were no problems introduced by upgrading the original iLife Applications to iLife '06.
So, this way, all the iLife '06 programs are installed fresh with no upgrading being performed.
So, I installed this bare OS 10.3.9 installation. Then, installed all the updates that were available. I repaired permissions before and after each update. And, installed all the updates from downloads from Apple's website (Not using Software Update).
After verifying that Software Update could not find any additional updates available, I then installed iLife '06.
This required first installing Quicktime 7.0.4 from the iLife '06 DVD.
After installing QuickTime, I then proceeded to install the iLife '06 package (remember that this is a completely new iLife install - not an upgrade install since I avoided installing the older versions).
Once iLife '06 was installed, I then installed the recent 6.0.1 updates for all the iLife Apps.
Then, I launched the iPhoto program for the first time to see if it would properly import my TIFF images.
Unfortunately, it still displays them as if they are scrambled (like a blocked television / cable channel).
So, with that done, I can confirm that it is not a corrupt file or another program on my system causing the problem. It is definitely a problem with iPhoto 6 / 6.0.1 and OS 10.3.9.
Just thought I would post the update here for others to add to their knowledge-base. Maybe if we rule out potential problems we'll be able to find the actual solution.
Again, this same set of images imports just fine into iPhoto 5 on OS 10.3.9 and 10.4.4. And, it also imports just fine into iPhoto 6.0.1 in OS 10.4.5. So, it is a problem apparently specific to OS versions 10.4.4 and older using iPhoto 6 or 6.0.1.
As mentioned previously, these TIFF images can be made to import fine if I remove the ICC information from the image. So, that may provide some clue as to where the flaw is in the iPhoto 6 / 6.0.1 program.

Acrobat 7.0.5 for Windows -- Problem creating a PDF from a TIFF image

I have a user who is attempting to create a PDF from a TIFF image using the Adobe PDF print driver (Acrobat 7.0.5). His computer is a 3.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 with 1 GB of RAM. His operating system is WinXP Pro SP2. The TIFF file he is trying to convert is about 2000 pages long. Is this even possible given the hardware and resources I've described?

Sorry, I should have been more explicit...The TIFF image is a multi-page image and is stored in a database here at our office. The user has a proprietary (internally-coded) viewer that's used to open the image from the database, and there's no way to save the image locally. The user wants to be able to search within the image, so he converts it to a PDF. Ordinarily, this works very nicely, but this is his first time trying to do it with an image of more than 1000 pages length.

Problems with placing Tiff images in CS2

When placing a Tiff image in CS2 the file crashes or a memory warning appears. I am able to place much larger EPS images, so image size is not necessarily a factor Saving the file as an EPS in PhotoShop is not a solution as I am placing GeoTiffs which must retain their geographic reference file. Java returning incorrect values for width and height of a Tiff image

I have some TIFF images (sorry, I cannot post them b/c of there confidential nature) that are returning the incorrect values for the width and height. I am using Image.getWidth(null) and have tried the relevant methods from BufferedImage. When I open the same files in external viewers (Irfanview, MS Office Document Imaging) they look fine and report the "correct" dimensions. When I re-save the files, my code works fine. Obviously, there is something wrong with the files, but why would the Java code fail and not the external viewers? Is there some way I can detect file problems?

Figured it out. The files have a different vertical and horizontal resolutions. In this case the horizontal resolution is 200 DPI and the vertical is 100 DPI. The imgage width and height values are based on those resolution values. I wrote a section of code to take care of the problem (at least for TIFF 6.0)

How to edit 16bit TIFF image sequence file in FCP?

Dear all,
I have a number of 16 bit TIFF image sequence files (2048 x 1024 resolution) - some of them are RED footage, and others came directly from our f/x guy. We are going into a color correction session in a post house and we've been asked to provide a sequential 16 bit TIFF image sequence of the edited time line.
I need to do a cross dissolve b/w most of the clips I have. I have created image sequence QT movie (reference files) from the TIFF images. Though they play fine in QT player, when I try importing into FCP, I am met with a "general error". I tried both dragging it into QT, as well as File --> Import.
I am wondering what can I do to get these clips into FCP in order to apply the cross dissolve transitions I need. Is this a problem relating to the 16bit nature of the TIFF files?
I tried exporting the TIFF image sequence standalone QT movie, and those imported fine. However, I have a feeling that the standalone movie conversion also decrease my bit depth from 16 to 8. (When I do my final TIFF output from FCP after dissolves / transitions had been applied, each TIFF file is now 8 MB instead of 12 MB, hence my suspicion that the bit depth is adjusted).
Are there any settings I am missing, or does FCP simply don't support 16 bit image sequence reference file. As a test, I had also converted all my TIFF to jpg, and created jpeg image sequence reference file. These reference QT file can be successfully imported to FCP and I can edit them as if they are a clip.
If FCP is not able to handle these files, what are my other options? After Effects?

As far as I know, both FCP and Color only support up to 10 bit color, which is 1024 levels for each color channel, more than enough for avoiding color banding.
If you need 16 bit for sure, I believe AE will support 16 bit output. Another 16 bit application would be the extended version of Photoshop, which has some limited time line capability.

I am currently running CS3, windows XP, service pack 2, with recent update, 5.03 installed today.
I just opened a 500 page document not in sections where 90% of the document is a placed PDF.
The PDFS were placed using a sample Script that came with Indesign, that instructs the PDF to automatically flow each page after another.
When scrolling through quickly in the pages pallette, I get the follwing error:-
"Error encountered while reading TIFF image, Image may be damaged of incompatible. Resave the image with different settings and try again."
I click OK.
Then I get the following error.....
" Could not complete request because of database error. The File "ABC.indd" is damaged (Error Code: 3).
Click OK....
Then I get the following error....
Adobe Indesign is shutting down. A serious error was detected. Please restart Indesign to recover work in any unsaved Indesign documents.
Then I get the error.......
Indesign.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for any inconveneince.
And I have two buttons to click....
Debug or Close.....
If I click Debug, it closes Indesign.
Within this window there is also a window to gather further information....I click it and it tells me...
"Indesign.exe....Error Signature AppName: indesign.exe AppVer: 5.0.3.662

To view technical inforamtion about the error report, clikc here....

The report conatains a whole heap of CHECKSUM ERRORS.
CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP??
I had these errors before updating to 5.03 and the patch hasn't rectified anything!!

Open the .inx file in CS3 (that's what you have, right?) and save as a new .indd.
I'd also be tempted to open the tiff in Photoshop and do a save as to re-write it.
Let us know if it helps.
Storing files on the network leaves you more open tot he risk of file damage during transfer and save operations.

Displaying TIFF images in Oracle Forms 6i

Hello, friends!
I am working in Oracle Forms 6.0.8 (that ancient tool) and encounter a problem with displaying TIFF images.
I have a number of scanned images and some of them are displayed and some are not. I've tried both extracting them from the database or from the file system (using READ_IMAGE_FILE). Sometimes I am getting just blank field in my image item and sometimes (after using READ_IMAGE_FILE) I get the error FRM-47100 (cannot read image file). Of course I've checked that all the files are displayed using standard tools for displaying TIFFs.
Basically the question is what kind of TIFF is considered valid and readable by Oracle Forms.
Analyzing TIFF tags actually gave me nothing: I have a pair of files with tags different only in image width/length and a number of rows/strip (but even those values are close), and one of the file is displayed correctly while the other is not. The thing I noticed is that invalid files are using compression type of CCITT Group 4.
Possibly Oracle Forms follows TIFF specification only to certain extent and does not support all the extensions, while sometimes the problems are not visible to user.
As a result of my work I need some automatic tool that converts undisplayable TIFF files to displayable ones but firstly I am to determine where the problem is. And it would be very good to have a prooflink that approves my decision.

Thanks to everybody, but I'm afraid my files don't contain any EXIF tags (although TIFF seems to support them). The file doesn't contain any tags with IDs greater than 0x7FFF but only core TIFF tags (with IDs of lower numbers). Moreover I have a file with exactly the same set of tags (but the values are a bit different) which is displayed properly.

Webutil Read Image Problem

I am reading image from client system using the below code
CLIENT_IMAGE.READ_IMAGE_FILE(v_rd_file_name, 'JPG', 'CTRL_BLK.ADD_IMAGE');
But this image is not displaying in the image item, this is happening for some particular images only. While writing this image into image server image size also increasing.
We are trying one image that dimension is 2900 X 4700 this is not uploading to image item.
but i am able to upload less than 2000 X 2000 dimension to the same image item

InDesign crashing when importing tiff images

I have upgraded to InDesign CC 2014. I have trouble importing some tiff images. InDesign crashes. Not all tiff images create problems. It depends on which version of Photoshop, they are saved in. If I open the image in Photoshop and saves again, there are not any problems. Our database is very large and contains several folders, so it is a big task to archive all images again, even if I create an action in Photoshop. I have searched, but I can not find any settings in InDesign that helps. Does anybody else has encountered this problem and found a solution?

ASk in the Id forum and provide exact system info, versions of PS, details about your files and so on. There is an issue with legacy color profiles in some cases, but beyond that I'm not aware of other problems that may be relevant here.

In my application i have to display TIFF Images.Here each TIFF Images consists of 5-10 pages.When we open that TIFF images generally it will start from page1.My problem is i have to directly go to page number 3 or 4 or 7 directly when i open the image.Can any one provide code for this problem.

You can use something like this: tiffimage.getPage(int page);

How to increase the speed of Zoom on TIFF image

Hi everyone,
i m doing zooming operation on tiff image.
when i applied zoom in operation on image which have properties
Bit per sample =1
Image Length = 2200 Pixel
Image Width = 1700 Pixel
Resolution(x) = 200 dpi
Resolution(y) = 200 dpi
then it require 2 sec.
then i apply the same code with tiff image which have properties like,
Bit per sample =1
Image Length = 3300 Pixel
Image Width = 2500 Pixel
Resolution(x) = 300 dpi
Resolution(y) = 300 dpi
then it require 9 to 10 sec.
my code is:

Are you using NI Vision IMAQ AVI Read Frame or anther method to read the AVI file?

Editing metadata in a TIFF image

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to edit TIFF image metadata using ImageIO v1.1 APIs, but something goes wrong...
For a TIFFImageWriter I get the following results:
writer.canInsertEmpty = true
writer.canInsertImage = true
writer.canRemoveImage = false
writer.canReplaceImageMetadata = false
writer.canReplacePixels = true
writer.canReplaceStreamMetadata = false
writer.canWriteEmpty = true
writer.canWriteRasters = false
writer.canWriteSequence = trueSo editing metadata with writer.replaceImageMetadata is not possible (I verified this, an exception is thrown). I thought I could remove an entire image and reinsert it with new metadata, but as you can see writer.removeImage is unavailable, too.
How can I edit a TIFF image without rewriting it to a totally new image file?
Any help will be appreciated,

Huh... I am in bitmap... OK, how would I go about changing to RGB? Not a complete novice, but never had a similar problem before.
