Tiff size from Illustrator CC
Yesterday we moved from CS6 to CC. Illustrator files that we previously saved out as tiffs from CS6 are now coming out much larger from CC. i.e. tiff was 1mb from CS6 now 18mb from CC. We have checked settings: colour space, dpi and lzw compression and can not see anything different. Anyone got any ideas or come across this problem.
Thanks
I am wondering why do you need TIFF out from AI?
If you need to print it professionally with a layout application use AI or PDF.
If you need to import them into Word use on Windows export to EMF or if it is more complicated as PNG. Both ways would result in smaller files size and I think not in worser quality.
If you have to do some work in Photoshop, you can either export as PSD or place the AI file directly in Photoshop.
I see no situation where the use of TIFF files from Ai make sense?

Image size from Illustrator to Photoshop
I'm new to Illustrator and may just be overlooking something here, but here's my the background and question:
I took a screen shot of an image and opened it in Photoshop CS3. I've cropped out a portion I want to use and save the file as a .eps file and open it with Illustrator. Within Illustrator, I recreate the image at the same size as the image I opened (I'm looking at both images at 100% view). I save my new image as a .eps file and then open it with Photoshop. For some reason, the image is about 50% bigger in Photoshop than it was in Illustrator. Any ideas? Is a 100% viewing percentage not really showing the correct size of the image? Or is does the issue lie with how Photoshop CS3 interprets a .eps file from Illustrator CS4?
Thanks in advance for any information/advice.You have just discovered image resolution and its effect on the display of pixel based images.
In Illustrator there's no resolution. Objects have a defined size and Illy assumes a monitor resolution of 72 ppi as a basis for it's assumptions on the display of graphics and for it's calculations of this 100%.
When exporting into pixel based file formats you can choose the resolution.
In Photoshop the "100%" has no relation to the actual size of things (as defined in Illustrator) but means that one pixel of the image is one pixel of your monitor.
When you open an EPS you get a dialog box in which you specify the way photoshop has to calculate the pixels from the vector and the resolution you want. When you enter 72 ppi you should get the size you expected. But that won't be enough to print.
BTW: the workflow of making a screenshot and converting your image to and fro maybe harmful to printing results. -
HP DESIGNJET will not print accurate sizes from Illustrator CC
Running Macbook Pro to HP DSIGNJET 500C. Layout artboard 24x24 with 20"x20" 1" grid. Print with no scaling . Squares about 15/16" I adjust artboard grid to be close to right then reprint and it will vary about a 1/16" over 18". I can live with that. Then I create a new artboard by coping the corrected one and it puts both of them out of scale. Any help? ? ?
upandrunning,
I believe it may be because the printer (driver) is non PostScript.

Postscript .ps files from Illustrator - Identical page size but content moving by pixels
Hi,
We're outputting postscripts from Illustrator and dropping them on to a Nexus RIP via Shuttle - when we're trying to match to existing files (for example, designs that share common colours/plates), the output page size stays exactly the same, content only has minor changes (i.e. an address block change) but when overlaying the output tiffs from the RIP in the QC software (DotSpy) the content can shift around in the page by a few pixels, which can make our QC guys life hell. It's not a RIP issue as we don't encounter any issues from Artpro. Any ideas?I did that before posting, but the iPod didn't recognize the music in iTunes. The "memory bar" noted I had "Other" memeory on it, but no music.
Not through iTunes, I see all the music there, but iTunes didn't recognize it as music.
What gives? -
Copy & Paste From Illustrator to Photoshop not matching document size
I just recently reformated my computer and I've been having an issue with copy and paste from Illustrator to Photoshop. Before I could copy a 2"x2" vector box from Illustrator into photoshop making a new document and the size and resolution would match. That is the new document would say 2"x2" at 300 ppi in photoshop and the preset would read "clipboard". I would then hit ok and paste and it would match perfectly. Now since I've reformated, photoshop always creates a new document with the wrong size regardless of the settings I enter in Illustrator or photoshop. I have document raster and effects set at 300 ppi in Illustrator and I have the new document set at 300 in photoshop, but it always transfers the 2"x2" box as some other size no matter what resolution I change it too. Again this used to work before so I'm assuming there is some setting I forgot about. Does anyone know? The main issue is the clipboard preset is not matching the document size, its almost as if Illustartor is telling photoshop it's a different resolution when it's not. Copying to 72 ppi seems to have no issue, which makes me think Illustrator just isn't sending it out at 300 ppi, but I don't know why as I have the document set at 300 ppi.
Have you found an answer that wasn't posted here yet? I have the same issue.

Unable to save a 'smallest size file' pdf from illustrator 5.5
We recently insalled Adobe Standard 5.5
I often save PDF files from Illustrator using the built in PDF options available from the PDF drop down menu bar when saving files. Usually I will save a visual as a 'smallest file size' or make use of the 'high quality print' option for other files etc.
Why cant I do this on CS5.5?
In addition, the colour is not acurate at all!
Please helpHi Scott - I found the following thread on the net. So I had a look on my time machine back-ups and copied the files from there, which I then pasted into my Settings folder as you suggested.
Ta da!! All working again!
Any idea how I could restore these settings from a backup?
Thanks!
The PDF presets reside in Root/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/
After I had installed 10.6.5, 6 preset files were removed from the Settings folder. The folder tree itself remained, it was just that some of the contents of "Settings" were deleted. I have fixed the problem by copying the deleted settings files from a backup.
These are the files which were deleted:
Smallest File Size.joboptions
Press Quality.joboptions
PDFX4 2008.joboptions
PDFX3 2002.joboptions
PDFX1 2001.joboptions
High Quality Print.joboptions
These files were not deleted:
Standard.joboptions
PDFA1b 2005 RGB.joboptions
PDFA1b 2005 CMYK.joboptions
Oversized Pages.joboptions
Somebody at Adobe community support for Indesign directed me to restore these files from a backup, which solved the problem.

Best file for importing images from Illustrator and Photoshop for small file sizes
Hello Adode consults!
I'm in the process of preparing an inDesign file for a school project -- I've already had a few harrowing experiences sending large files to the printer that are too large to process (and a very grumpy computer, etc). The end result will be a poster around 36 inches by 4 or 5 feet.
I'm wondering if there are any best practices for making sure that the files imported into InDesign are a manageable size to begin with. Should I, for instance, be saving each file as a jpeg before placing in Indesign?
Thanks!
-KatherineNo, you should not save every file as JPG before placing it in INDesign. JPG is only usefull for raster images (like photos) without any transparency in high quality.
When you place images use:
For raster images from Photoshop psd (rgb with color profile)
For raster images from Photoshop with form layers, texts or any vector element use PDF (or PDP) with layers.
For vector graphics from Illustrator use AI files or PDF.
For layouts from other InDesign projects use either the INDD itsself or export a PDF/X4.
But to the printer deliver a PDF according to their standards. E.g. when they need CMYK files export as PDF/X1a with the required output color space and the resolution they want. Produce the pdf via Export (Print).
Don't deliver open INDD. File size should for printing projects not be an issue. -
When I copy and paste from illustrator to PS regardless of option chosen the original shape size is lost, instead of true size shape tries to fill entire width. Same happens when using the new library assets.
Fix?
ThanksCan't always make sense of its effect, but I suspect what your seeing comes under the influence of Photoshop > Preferences > General > Options > Resize Image During Place

ADMEveParser PlugHi Mylenium,
The program just loads useless to use your words when I try to pass a file from Illustrator to Photoshop and when I click anywhere in Illustrator I get Program "Not responding" it doesn't crashes (stops) it stais opened but it doesn't do anything so I need to close it by force from task manager because I can't do anything with it.... Once I left it over night to save an important file and just in the morning I managed to do that so after a while it comes round but all the time there are different periouds of pending. Anyway this is not normal and I should be able to use the program in normal parameters with a powerful system.
I don't have any processor over load in the task manager I don't have anything unusual that indicates an over load of information, that's my problem. My guess is that I have a system incompatibility but I don't know where so that's why I asked for Adobe's help. Again I didn't had this problem using the same pack (CS5) with a less powerful system...
If there are any creash logs pelase tell me where can I find them ? -
Problem with jpeg images imported from Illustrator
Hi, i am kind of new with Premire and video, though have experience in web design and coding, but i have noticed a weird problem with premiere pro cs 5.5 when i import jpeg pictures and put them as intro before the video that where done in adobe illustrator and have vectors and stuff, the quality of the image gets pretty bad and blurry...i searched through the internet looking for clues on what to do like changing to png, tiff formats but nothing has helped so far....any ideas on what to do. So when i import jpeg,png images from illustrator (that have vectors or illustrations) do i have to do something special with it, or import it in some special format??? i would appreciate the help.
This is how the image looks on youtube:
Anyway here is the video with its poor image quality. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_oMNzXAZ8Y&feature=youtu.be
This is how it looks originally before putiing it, in premiere pro cs 5.5
Anyway here is the video with its poor image quality. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_oMNzXAZ8Y&feature=youtu.be
THANX guys would appreciate the help!!!hiya.
video likes 72 dpi ( though some will say it doesnt matter .. thats a long story ). basically video 'shows' 72 dpi ( basically what the monitor resolution is...typically 72 dpi ). As you know from print and dimensions, there is a relative sorta thing with byte count ( file size in bytes ), ppi ( I usually say dpi but in video its ppi ....same thing basically )..., and dimensions ( width x height ).
soooo , as you know in print and web stuff...there is a relationship between number of dots or pixels, dimensions in inches or pixels, and overall byte count of file size....
That said, in "print" it is usually best to go with 300dpi.. In video it is best to go with 72 ppi.....
Also, in print and going offest press.. its nice to go with cmyk ( for color separations ).. but in video and web its best to go with RGB.
The video stuff doesnt deal with vector stuff... it just sees and deals with bitmapped stuff...vector stuff is a mathematical sorta thing whereas video stuff is just plain old bitmaps ( like BMP, TIF, JPG, etc )...
Ideally your still images and graphics in a video editing program would be bitmapped rgb 72 ppi.. and match exactly the dimension of your video format ( eg. 1080p ). That said, it is normal to have LARGER images ( still images and graphics ) than your project dimensions if you PLAN ON SCALING AND MOTION )... like, your original graphic or pic can be larger than the project if you plan on scaling it down over time to make it look like you are zooming out in the video ....
To get the best results of a graphic or picture in a video is to have it exactly the project size ( eg. 1920x1080 px at 72 ppi for full HD ).
soooooo.... if you convert your vector to bitmap, save as psd or tif or something... at 72ppi , with the dimensions in inches or pixels that equals the video ( 1920x1080 for example )... you will see what you want in your second sample ( the original )...
ps.. you can import layers to the video if you wanna do a psd file and have ONE of those layers the one you use in your video ...can label it something like " video layer " ... whatever... -
Copy from illustrator, paste in photoshop. My image is now tiny and pixelated
My coworker and I just updated my photoshop CC yesterday and we are both having the same problem, so here is what happens:
I draw a vector image in illustrator, say its a square that is 1x1". I copy it from illustrator, and go to open a new photoshop document. My preset is "clipboard" which means it should give me a 1x1" square that is the resolution that i have set (in my case it is usually set at 1200 DPI), but instead, it is now setting it to .6x.6 inches. Then when I have the document open and paste it in, it is pasting it at a very low resolution and a smaller canvas size than my image is.
If I dont use the clipboard preset and type in my own size, the resolution is fine when I paste my shape in. This works for shapes that are exact dimensions, but if I have a shape that is 2.2034x3.4565, its a little annoying to have to figure out that dimensions in illustrator then type it in when creating my photoshop document, epseically because I am doing this over and over throughout the day (creating bitmapped tiffs from vector illustrator shapes). Its also annoying to have to make it bigger then crop it down after I paste it in.
Before the update, the clipboard preset would size it exactly to the size of my shape I copied from illustrator and the resolution would be fine.
I am hoping it is something simple that I just need to check or uncheck, but I dont know where to start.
Anyone know how to fix this?I have the same problem, but I found a workaround. It may be the same procedure Sarahjane_72 used. It adds two steps to the import: Copy the AI vector art, switch to PS, hit command-N, then, when the Paste dialogue box appears, *first* switch the box's units from pixels to whatever you use-centimeters, inches, picas. *Then* switch the scaling factor, e.g., 72dpi, to your preferred size, e.g., 300dpi, and the image should paste at the correct size. If you reverse the sequence and change the dpi first, it will not work, and the results will be unusable. I have no idea why it works one way and not the other, but switching first from pixels(a scaling factor) to an exact measurement in inches or centimeters seems to make all the difference. I've asked this question in other threads. Nobody has an answer, but I can tell you that this glitch survived a reformatting of my HD to get rid of a malware infection, followed by a re-install of the Adobe CC apps. So it seems to be due to some change in Photoshop. It's a big waste of time and I hope it wasn't consciously added as an "improvement".

Best workflow for image (LOGO) from Illustrator to FCP?
Greetings to all. I am struggling with this -- I want to bring my company logo into FCP 5.1.4, FROM Illustrator to FCP. Easy enough? Not for me.. as I have two issues:
1. My imported image looks great in the viewer, but jaggies in the Canvas.
I understand that for DV NTSC 48k, my frame size is 720x480 -- but in another post, I read that it is best to export as 720x540, .tif (another person said 720x540 jpeg, because jpeg embeds sRGB proile -- but that will be part of question #2) -- the square pixel vs. 4:3 pixel issue...
My Illustrator image is all vector art, and all fonts are outlined before export. I am saving as high-res (300 dpi). I tried saving as tif, jpeg, pdf. I tried bringing the PDF into photoshop, and saving as a psd. I tried opening pdf. No matter what I tried, the image looked perfect in the viewer, but like doo in the canvas. A tif, file size 720x540, 300dpi looks correct in the viewer, but jaggie in the canvas.
YES, the green "render" bar was visible in the timeline -- of course, that must be the problem -- but then I rendered the still clip, and there was no difference. I made sure the render indicator in the timeline was "dark grey" -- but yet, the imported still image from illustrator looks jaggie and not good enough for production in the canvas.
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG HERE?
2. Color space -- regardless of the jaggies issues, my imported still image from illustrator is all washed out when imported.
Regardless of file type. Yes, file set to RGB. Yes, gamma set to 2.2 (also tried setting imported still gamma to defualt - "source" - no change)
My LCD display (mac book pro C2D 17") is calibrated, using a Spyder2. Gamma is set to 2.2. My print output from illustrator (saved as pdf x-1/a) ALWAYS prints as expected.
If I add a color correction filter, and juice up the saturation, I can try to make the still image look close, but this shouldn't be the case, YES?
My expectation is that a still image in illustrator or photoshop should look the same in FCP.
What kind of newbie error am I making? What am I missing?
Thank in advance for any guidance.
JeremyJeremy Roberts wrote:
I have been sending jobs to print (magazine ads, web, general print) for ages, and my printed materials come in as expected -- that is, within a few % points of my display -- which is what we are expecting -- and also EXTREMELY close to proof prints, using a reasonably high-end inkjet printer, with correct paper profiles... that is to say, that although I am no expert in color management by any means, I have what I need so that what I see on screen is very close to what is printed on a local printer, or a million dollar press.
CAN I EXPECT to achieve anything close to this with video?
When you print something on paper, you get to see exactly what it will look like and that's exactly how your customers will see it too. With video, there are infinite variables affecting this such as incorrectly calibrated displays; cheap TV components; the difference between CRTs, LCDs and computer displays; the size / resolution of the display, etc. There are so many variables that it will look different on every screen. All we can do as content producers is calibrate to a common standard, achieved through a properly-calibrated broadcast monitor.
But if your film has a single use in mind, such as a trade show, it is better to ignore the above advice and use the display device it will end up on as the monitoring device, if you can.
I am not near my FCP machine right now, so I can't try the test -- but I will try to revert my display color profile to stock apple LCD, and see what this brings. I know that FCP has simply NOT looked correct to me on my machine.
What do the "big guns" who are using FCP and having to use pre-defined creative print elements, created in AI or Photoshop or whatever -- all color matched for print, what do you guys do when you need to integrate this into FCP?
ARE FCP editors using Apple's 1.8 gamma (I guess you must because FCP uses it regardless of your colorsync profile, per the above article). ???
I set it to Source and have had no problems because I create still images on the same machine with the default gamma of 1.8. I think what happened was you created the images in Photoshop with a colorsync profile of 2.2 on the monitor but perhaps a different profile embedded (if any). When you brought it into FCP, FCP automatically assumed it was created at a gamma of 1.8 and boosted to 2.2 but as the images was not created at 1.8, it was already very bright to begin with and so was boosted x2. That's my theory. -
Pasting from Illustrator to Photoshop doesn't maintain aspect ratio
I have vector artwork that is not aligned to a pixel grid in Illustrator. In CS5, I would be able to paste the vector object as a smart object into Photoshop file that was larger than the illustrator image and resize larger while holding shift to keep the ratio the same.
However with Creative Cloud, if I have a square in Illustrator that happens to be 17.3px by 17.3, then paste to Photoshop in a file that has a larger canvas than the paste, I get uneven horizontal and vertical ratios (width = 18; height = 17). It seems to overestimate the width and make it appear fatter horizontally (which is the wrong aspect ratio). This is very noticeable when vector objects (like perfect circles and small icons) get scaled up in Photoshop.
I have tried unchecking and checking "Snap Vector Tools and transforms to Pixel Grid" but this doesn't seem to fix it.
The only way I've been able to get this ratio to be kept is to create a new document with the size automatically changed to clipboard dimensions (which are the desired 17x17). When you paste as smart object, it now uses the correct aspect ratio.When you paste an object into Photoshop take a look at your options bar to see if the Maintain Aspect Ratio button is checked. I'm guessing that it isn't which is why Illustrator objects are being pasted at different heights and widths. As you can see in the image below, a perfect circle from Illustrator is being placed in Photoshop at 100.05% and 99.44%. By checking the link button between the two percentages the numbers get locked to the same percentage so that the object is pasted in at the correct dimensions.

Transparent edges in psd exported from Illustrator
Hello Community,
I have something going on when I export from Illustrator as a PSD using the artboard. It ends up with a line of transparency around the edges, and is larger than the size of the art exported. It gains about .01 inch around the edges, and when I use 'trim transparent pixels' in Photoshop, it trims it down so it has only gained .07 inches around the edges, but doesn't lose the last line of pixels that are semi-transparent. I am using a script that exports it, then re-imports it and places it in the Illustrator file, effectively swapping the vector for raster. It's part of a larger process I have no control of, so the process is not something I can change, otherwise I wouldn't do that.
Why is it exporting with this line of transparency on the edges? It's causing white lines to show up in the file that it gets reimported to. Until now it was ok because it only shows in the bleed, which gets trimmed off. From now on, though, this process is supposed to be used for non-bleed items, and the white lines are showing up. Attached is a closeup of an example.
Does anyone have any ideas how to stop it from happening?
Cheers,
Emmy WillifordOk I got it you have two choices to get rid of this problem this is what I found out.
if you export the file with the choice of art optimize or type optimize you will get this antialias artifact if you choose none as the optimize option then you will not get this anti alas artifact since there is no anti alias being applied.
The second choice is to turn on align to pixel grid and then you can export with art or type optimze as an anti alias option and this artifact will not be present.
You have a third option and that is to keeep your optimization options and set the color background shape to align to pixel grid on the object level and not the document level using the align to pixel grid option in the transform panel you have to show options in the transform panel to see this option.
Here is no align to lixel grid with none for optimizing
Here it is with Art Optimized
Here it is with Type Optimized
Here it it with art optimized and align to pixel grid document wide
Here it is with the background object only set to align to pixel grid
I hope this gives you the options you need -
Hi,
I'm trying to extract image size from header for PNG, JPG, TIFF, BMP and GIF files. So far I got PNG working. I'm having problems finding size info for JPG files. Anyone knows where I can read about it (i didnt find nothing on google) or have the code that works? also for the other image types?
P.S. I dont wanna read the entire image using Image class cause its too slow.Code Snippet:
ImageInputStream imageStream =
ImageIO.createImageInputStream(/*File or InputStream*/);
java.util.Iterator<ImageReader> readers =
ImageIO.getImageReaders(imageStream);
ImageReader reader = null;
if(readers.hasNext()) {
reader = readers.next();
}else {
imageStream.close();
//can't read image format... what do you want to do about it,
//throw an exception, return ?
reader.setInput(imageStream,true,true);
int imageWidth = reader.getWidth(0);
int imageHeight = reader.getHeight(0);
reader.dispose();
imageStream.close();
