TIFF superior over PSD

Hi, I came across this link.  What interested me was one comment, TIF format is a superior format then PSD.  What is the community opinon on this ? I sorta agree !
Wrong...PSD is now a bastardized file format that is NOT a good idea to use. Even the Photoshop engineers will tell you that PSD is no longer the Photoshop "native" file format. It has no advantages and many disadvantages over TIFF.
TIFF is publicly documented, PSD is not. That makes TIFF a preferred file format for the long term conservation of digital files.
TIFF uses ZIP compression for max compression, PSD uses RLE which if you save without the Max compatibility will be a bit smaller, but at the risk of not being able to be used by apps, like Lightroom.
TIFF can save EVERYTHING a PSD can save including layers, paths, channels, transparency, annotations and can go up to 4 GIGS in file size. TIFF can save all the color spaces PSD can. The ONLY thing I can think of that PSD can save that currently TIFF can't save is if you Save out of Camera Raw a cropped PSD, you can uncrop the PSD in Photoshop CS, CS2 or 3. That's one tiny obscure thing that PSD can do that TIFF currently doesn't. How many people even knew that let alone use it?
PSD used to be the preferred file format back before Adobe bastardized it for the Creative Suite. The moment that happened, PSD ceased to be a Photoshop "native" file format. PSB is the new Photoshop "native" file format for images beyond 30,000 pixels. And , at the moment, only Photoshop can open a PSB.
Getting back to the fist point, Adobe can do anything including stopping support for PSD because it's a proprietary file format. TIFF is public, even if it's owned by Adobe (by virtue of the Aldus purchase). Even if Adobe went belly up tomorrow, TIFF would continue.
And, let me be blunt, anybody who thinks PSD is "better" than TIFF is ignorant of the facts. If Adobe would let them, the Photoshop engineers would tell you to quit using PSD. Lightroom for the first beta did NOT support PSD and Hamburg fought tooth and nail to prevent having to accept PSD. He blinked, but you still can't import a PSD without Max compat enabled-which basically makes it a TIFF with a PSD extension.
Look, I'll make it REAL simple...
TIFF = Good
PSD = Bad
Ok?
I hope this helps with your understanding of why ACR/LR has "difficulties" with PSD.

If Photoline is a good photoshop alternative and is flexible the Photoshop CC.  Why then is Photoline not the Gold Standard of Image Processors. It more likely you use a small subset of Photoshop feature and Photoline feature cover the subset of Photoshop features you use. However I have seen you over in the scripting forum the last time I looked Photoline could not be scripted it only had action support.  Have you given up on scripting Photoshop?
Photoline does not do any video or 3d stuff (well, there is some primitive 3d tool). Also, the brush engine for digital painting is not really comparable: it is more or less on par with the older Photoshop versions, before the updated brush engine. It is, however, compatible with most Photoshop brush libraries.
So in this sense: yes, Photoline covers a subset of Photoshop: image editing. And in this regard it does an extremely good job, with tools that are mostly (95%) on par with Photoshop. Up till 14 months ago I used the full scope of functionality in Photoshop for professional photo work, web work, graphic design and 3d texturing. I have used it since version 3 in my work. In September last year I decided to stop using Adobe Photoshop for my work, as I discovered alternative tools that just work much better and are more efficient.
In terms of workflow Photoline offers a much more streamlined and non-destructive layer stack. I used all of Photoshop's image editing features, and use most of the techniques described by Marguilis for image colour correction and enhancement. And Photoline's approach works BETTER than Photoshop for general and detailed image editing (in my opinion).
For example:
- no need to switch image mode when you wish to work with the curves in Lab mode. This is part of the curves: a neat dropdown allows me to work in RGB, Lab, HIS or HSV colour mode.
- far better control of layer opacity and effect control due to a -200 up to +200 opacity slider. You can easily invert a layer's blend mode effect this way. Or double its effect
- cloned layers update in realtime. And source layers can be moved to their own page. Multiple views can be setup, and changes in the source layers in one page update in realtime on other pages. Very handy to organize your work. Arguably works better than "smart objects".
- layer masks act like regular layers. The amount of freedom this allows you in your workflow is staggering: group layer masks together, apply adjustment layers, layer effects - the sky is the limit. Completely non-destructive, and you can add as many bitmap and vector layer masks per layer as you want. And these can be cloned as well, and reused anywhere in your layer stack or pages!
- and of course, any layer and layer mask can be individually set to 8/16/32bpc and any image mode.
There is also no need to convert layers to smart object for them to work with non-destructive adjustment layers. Just apply them. Edit the contents in place - why force me to open a smart object in a new window that will not update in real time in the original comp? Just silly.
Anyway, Photoline is Photoshop sans 3d and video. With a much improved layer stack workflow.
Granted, the one thing really missing is scriptability, unfortunately. No scripting in Photoline. I have mentioned this lack of control to the Photoline devs, and hopefully they will address this in the future. At the moment I use ImageMagick for more complex batch image processing jobs instead, but I do hop this will be amended in a newer version of Photoline.
For digital painting work I now use Krita - the brush engine in Krita is insane, and blows Photoshop's brush engine out of the water. As it happens, Krita applies the same layer paradigm as Photoline, so they feel like sister applications.
For 3d painting and texturing work I generally use 3dCoat. Photoshop's 3d is pretty horrendous as it is, so I already moved away from that a long time ago.
For web work Photoline is better than Photoshop, since I can work in pages. Optimization I do with freeware tools such as Color Quantizer. Photoshop's web export is rather bad, so additional tools are required to take care of proper optimization.
Besides, the point I am making is this: Photoshop tries to be everything to everyone nowadays. It has lead to fragmented development, and at the same time it can never hope to be as good as specialized tools. More bugs are introduced due to bloat and legacy code that has to support extraneous features that are good, but not great (3d everyone?). At the same time less time is spent on the core functionality that made Photoshop so great in the past as an image editor. And it is starting to show.

  • Tiffs saved from PSD are corrupted

I've been trying to find an answer for this for over a week. It shouldn't be that hard to find info on a problem that must be affecting other people who have PS or PSE.
I've been saving tiffs from PSDs for 2 years with no problems. (I draw, color in PSE, then save as both a PSD and a tiff.) Two weeks ago an editor told me she couldn't open my files. Then I discovered that mpst of my tiffs I've made since then are broken. If the image has layers, the tiff can still be opened in Picasa view and PSE, but no windows program. If the image file has been flattened, you can open it with any program, but it is squished to a square instead of a rectangle, and seems to have a lot of vertical lines in it and has been washed out with faint color.
In any case, my editors need tiffs to print, and I need every tiff to be opened by any program! Any suggestions? Did something in my PSE go horribly wrong? Right before they went bad, I did download the new Picasa 3 and Windows Live Gallery, because I read that they both have good tagging, and before (if) I upgrade to PSE 8, I wanted to check out their tagging and organization abilities. Perhaps they affected how PSE works?!
I read here I could reload defaults. I did. Should I change something in tiff preferences, or...what?

How do I check off Not Helpful? from employee Garry. NO reply in 2 weeks.
I think I may have solved this myself, and it's a glitch in PSE, or there's something with saving a lasso that I don't know about. I never learned I could save a lasso or marquee until I started reading a book on PSE 5, so when I started trying this out, I can no longer make a tiff from that file - I mean it says it made it, but it's corrupted, like the one I attached here weeks ago, or sometimes it's only a partial image, what I had used the saved selection for.
And since I always have to make tiffs, this means I'll never be able to use the save and load selection feature. Big bummer.
Also, another issue I noticed recently: I signed into the organizer from the opening splash page for the first time. (For 2 years I've only opened PSE with an image.) There is an automatic trigger in Organizer that starts scanning or doing something behind the scenes from then on, even when PS is OFF. For 2 days my very large CPU was ratcheted up like 50%, making a really annoying sound, and I was on deadline. I finally saw it in my processes - sorry, forget the name of the exe - looked up every exe in there, and finally found out you have to turn off something in Organizer so it won't operate continually. That's a huge problem.

  • PSE 12 won't save the tiff file over the original, but brings up save as window

I've solved (or had help) solving this problem before:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5893872#5893872
I am using PSE 12 as a photo editor for Aperture 3.5.1 and the photo is duplicated (as a tiff) in Aperture and PSE editor opens with the image.  When I close the file and say to save the file it brings up the save as window.
The fix from the earlier discussion worked fine at first, but now, even though I tell PSE 12 to "on first save -- save over current file" it now brings up the "save as" window and won't save over the file (changes the file type from .tiff to .tif)
    Has something changed?

Go to the editore preferences>general, click this button and restart the editor, then try again (You will need to reset the saving files pref first):

  • TIFF file from PSD

Does saving a PSD file to a TIFF file format destroy or otherwise do anything to the pixels and/or quality of the file? I'm asking because I user Silverfast to scan in to PS CS5 Extended and when I saved each scan I did so as a PSD thinking it is the best option. But now the issue is that I can't edit the PSD file with Camera Raw which seems to have much better global options to fix image issues.

ACR purportedly has the correct "workflow" (not quite, but certainly better than PS). Another advantage of ACR is that it won't modify the original, so that is kind of good too.
LOL, define "correct 'workflow'".  It's impossible.  Anyone claiming to have a "correct" workflow is deluding themselves and possibly others.  It's even quite possible to challenge the term "better".
There are people teaching that doing image editing actually IN Photoshop is somehow "bad".  Keep in mind they make money by teaching, not by getting results with Photoshop.
And your statement that ACR "won't modify the original" is literally true because ACR isn't an editor in itself and does not have a "Save As" capability.  However, if you open a TIFF file with it into Photoshop, then do File-Save you WILL overwrite the original.
My point is this:  There's a lot of "accepted dogma" in the Photoshop realm that sounds really right.  Just be wary of it, and try to understand what it really means in your own context, because it simply isn't always right.  There is no "right".  There's too much art involved to even define "right"
Most things you can do in Camera Raw you can do in Photoshop proper.  I agree that Camera Raw does give you different ways to do things, which may well be more understandable.

  • PSE 9 - bug report TIFF save-as PSD bug

    Running PSE 9:
    Elements Organizer 9.0.0.0
    Core Version: 9.0 (20100905.m.9093)
    Language Version: 9.0 (20100905.m.9093)
The save-as function has a bug; after opening a tiff file, editing it and trying to save it as psd, it still shows up in windows explorer as a tif file, with a tif extension. The file can be opened in PSE afterwards and then saved again as a psd, which then works. Bizarro

The first thing to try when PSE gets weird is to reset the preferences. Quit the editor, then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift. Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • Import errors using TIFF, JPEG, BMP, PSD

I've been trying to import as assets or slideshows from Adobe Bridge (using CS2 as my main program) still images with the same message for 25% of the files, that being that Encore cannot decode the media, and perhaps you should find the proper decoder. For Christ sake. I'm using and Adobe product throughout the procedure.
The files are all 8 bit, with no layers, without imbedded file data.
It's like Encore 2.0 isn't talking with CS2 at all, or at least not all the time. Some files import fine, others simply will not.
I'm using the Nikon D2x camera and maybe there is a problem there??? Shouldn't be in my mind. Professionals use professional equipment!!!
I'm just about at my wit's end. I've a deadline here and Encore is proving to be a nightmare.
I've called tech support and they were no help at all. they did suggest converting to bitmap, and that works-- like I say -- all but 25% of the time still. What about my files are corrupted??
Computer is a 3.2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 with 2 GBs of RAM, running Windows XP.
    HELP!!

Though far too late for someone with a deadline almost a year ago, one thing that I have noticed when using PSD files in other Adobe Apps is that one should always Save w/ Max Compatibility checked, even though the files are a bit larger. I have all my copies of PS set to this, as the default, but had changed it on one (for some now unknown reason) and Save(ed) several PSDs. InDesign CS2 would not Place these files.
Another thing to look for is the excess baggage (Paths, Channels, etc.), that is necessary when working on the files in Photoshop. I always Save all of that material in my working folder, but then clean it up, when I do the final Save_As to the images folder for Import/Place into another app. I still have that material in the original working version, but do not include much of it, for final output. If I need it for Edit in Photoshop, I can always drag it in from the working version, and then Delete it, when the re-work is done.
I would have loved to hear the answer to Ruud's question from the OP, but assume that he/she found the difference, and just got too busy to share it.
As for the Nikon - should not be a problem. I shoot NEF (Nikon's RAW) and then, using ARC in PS CS2, Save_As PSD, when I have applied my settings and corrections. Never had a problem with this workflow. However, I do Image Size to whatever I will need in the other apps., so the files are no larger, than they will need to be.

  • External Editor only TIFF and PSD

I want to edit my photos in Photoshop but in the Preferences there are only the TIFF's and PSD formats supported - since my original files come as JPEG's it would be sufficient to safe the files as high quality JPEG's. Is there a possibility to edit a PLIST file in Aperture, that this option gets visible in the Preferences?

my qustion is would not this be the perfect job for a
    DNG file in
    a future V. of apeture ?
I can state this would not be a good way at all to handle this situation. The problem is this - you have been working on color and other adjustments based on the Aperture RAW conversion (which itself you have probably carefully tweaked as to sharpness and noise reduction).
Using DNG and going to some other program to edit, you are relying now on the ability of that other program to do exactly the same RAW conversion and also do all of the adjustments Aperture did in exactly the same way. As you might imagine, no other program has a hope of doing the conversion and adjustments exactly as Aperture does them, for they are not Aperture. Thus when you did sharpening or some other adjustment in that other program it would be based on a different RAW conversion that may well not have the exact same combination of RAW adjustments applied.
That is why when moving to other programs to continue editing a rendered format (such as TIFF) is the way to go, because it exactly preserves all of the editing you have done to that point.
As to the posters original question it would not actually be that great an idea to send a JPG over to the external editor because it would have to be a brand new JPG with your adjustments applied, and then when you saved it from the external editor you'd have a 3rd generation JPG file and every time you edited it after you'd have yet another generation of JPG loss.
What you can do to conserve some space is to select PSD for external editing, and then in Photoshop (or whatever you open the file in) convert to 8-bit mode (by default it's 16).
Just think of ti this way - that JPG is no longer a JPG, it's your new master! Preserve quality at all costs (well at least space costs).
Messing with the plist file may give you an 8-bit PSD file directly, I have not messed with those settings after 1.1.1 came out.

  • Can´t open/import any file like jpgs, tiffs, psd!?!

so strange, but my indesign cs5 does not support any files like normal jpgs and tiffs!!
    i cant open them...
i always get the info box: Cannot open the file "blabla.JPG". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that.....
    hello?? jpg?? tiff?? psd?? pdf???
is something blocked?? no file AT ALL, there must be something wrong...thats for sure.
i reinstalled the whole application! really...i dont know what to do, i hope someone here can help me!
its frustrating!! all jpgs in the open dialog from indesign are grey when its on -all readable docs- in -all docs- its black to choose,
but nothing happens, just the fu¢≠}g info box shows up again.
strange thing is i used  it before and it worked, like half a year ago on my macbook. i transfered the the user and all applications to the imac
so its identical, photoshop and lightroom is working fine, just ID is making trouble.
    thx for your help guys!

You have to have some inkling of InDesign before going to work with it. Do you have any previous experience with it? Are you aware of the Online Help? (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/indesign/cs/using/WSa285fff53dea4f8617383751001ea8cb3f-6bc4a.h tml in particular).

  • CS6 Links Window Shows jpeg file name but not tiff or psd file name

So I have a question, I noticed that in CS5 and CS6 that when i place a jpeg file in Illustrator, the file name does appear in the links window, but when i place a tiff or a psd file there is no file name in the links window, this drives me nuts.  Is there a way to see the files name of placed psd and tiffs in the links window?

    Here's my thoughts...
    1. You are a bit confused and I wonder how you can determine a file is a PSD or a TIF by looking at it?  Not all print drivers can recognize PSD's, but can recognize TIF ( this means almost all output devices can interpret TIF's no problem ).  That said, PSD's can manage layers better than TIF's which add to file size each layer you include in the TIF.
    2. Never say never.  This all depends on the file's use.  Layered TIFs can add complexity in which a print driver can or cannot deal with.  As you work on an image, you may want to merge layers for whatever reason(s) and you always have the option to flatten whenever you feel like it.  However, It is also a good idea to dupe the file as you move along.  That means you always have a layered version to fall back on should you need to edit later on.  I also Place transparent PSDs in Illustrator files with no problems.  But, I save as EPS in Illustrator and when I do that, then the file is automatically flattened.  This is perhaps what the internet was talking about.
    3.  Yes, see number 2 above.  There's no such thing as automatic flattening of TIFFs.  Again, this all depends on the printer and whether or not it can print while retaining original layers.  Some do, some don't.  Most of the time, I edit in PSD with layers intact.  Then, when I prep the file for printing, I will save a copy as a flattened TIFF so the file streamlines through the RIP and Print process.
    4.  Makes no difference.  Use 'em if you've got 'em.
Try to get some good resource material at a library or college bookstore or barnes & noble.  Also, get Adobe's Print Publishing Guide.  This is a good reference guide.

  • Transparent shadow crossing over the image in pdf output

    Hi Folks,
In recent days, we are frequently facing problem in using of tiff format image in InDesign. In pdf output, there is some transparent shadow crossing over the image. The problem occurs in ps to pdf as well as export pdf settings. The issue was not happened for the past 5 years.
If it is a reproducible error, we could find the root cause of the problem. But the same issue does not occur if we create the pdf again. Please see below the differences in viewing of actual image & problematic image and suggest how to resolve this and why it happens.
    Issue 1:
Actual view of image shown in left side; Corrupted view of image shown in right side
    Issue 2:
    Issue 3:
Now I have suggested my team to convert all tiff images to psd image format. I really don't know whether it helps. All I need is to know the root cause of the issue. Anybody please suggest would be really helpful.

    @Tyson:
In Issue 2, horizontal green color shading is crossing above the play/pause icon in right hand side of the image.
In Issue 3, I have displayed the screenshot of the image placed in InDesign to show the original view of the image. But the problem shows in right hand side that is pdf output view. You can see the horizontal green color shading in 1st image and light grey color shading (at the top of "NO" text) in 2nd image.
Actual & Effective PPi of top of the image --> 597
Actual & Eff. PPI of bottom of the image --> 477

  • ACR 6.3RC still makes Bridge display some TIFFs & JPGs overexposed

I had the same problem with TIFFs & JPGs after upgrading from ACR 6.1 to 6.2. My system is Win 7x64 and, of course, PsCS5 and Bridge 4.0.39. This time the upgrade was from ACR 6.1 to 6.3RC. Not all images are affected. The problem seems to be entirely random. The amount of overexposure seems to be in the order of 1 to 2 stops. The problem is limited in this way for me:
    1. All the affected images display correctly exposed when opened in Ps and ACR 6.3RC (and ACR 6.2) hosted by Bridge.
    2. Only TIFFs & JPGs (both B&W and Colour) "derived" ultimately from original TIFF scans (both B&W and Colour) made on a Nikon SuperCoolscan 5000 ED are affected. The original TIFF scans (99.99% are 16-bit) are all unaffected.
    3. The problem does not occur with any TIFF or JPG file derived from native CRW or NEF raw files or from native JPG files produced in-camera (Canon EOS 300D and Nikon D700), all of which are themselves unaffected.
    4. It does not matter were you might be in an image editing process. Some intermediate edits to TIFFs (I never make intermediate JPG edits) are affected, others are not. Editing might start with the TIFF and continue with edits to the TIFF, and only some of the subsequent TIFFs (or final JPGs derived from them) are affected. For example, there might be 6 distinct edits to a TIFF and only edits 3 through 6 are affected. Editing might procede immediately from the original TIFF scan to PSD, finalise with PSD, and then, AND sometimes only, any TIFF or JPG made from the final, flattened PSD produces a file which Bridge will display overexposed. Only some files in a batch of scans, all made at the same time and under exactly the same conditions (almost always with no adjustments made with the Nikon scanning software), are ever affected - never all of them.
    5. Some of the edits to the original TIFF scans (where the edits were kept as TIFFs) were made with Picture Window Pro, some with Lightroom 1.3 (I think), some with ACR 4.x, ACR 5.x, but most were made with PS CS3, CS4 and CS5: it does not matter, there are some affected files from each. The problem certainly does occur with files which have never been opened, let alone edited, in any version of ACR.
    6. I have several instances where simply making a copy of a TIFF scan in another folder (whether the copy was made by Bridge or with Windows Explorer has no influence) results in the copy only and not the original being displayed overexposed.
    7. If a file is affected, all TIFFs AND all JPGs derived from it will be overexposed, never just one or the other.
The overexposure problem detailed above does not occur with ACR 6.1. All the files affected by ACR 6.2 and 6.3RC are displayed with correct exposure by Bridge when ACR 6.1 is installed.
I'm at a complete loss to understand what is going on. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Has anyone else who was experiencing the Bridge/overexposure problem with either ACR 6.2 or 6.3RC found a solution?

This will be posted in both the ACR and Bridge User Forums
I've done some experimentation and found a workaround for, not the solution to, my problem with ACR 6.2 and 6.3RC causing Bridge to display random TIFFs and JPGs overexposed.
This is a temporary, and, if you have lots of affected files, a very laborious, individual file workaround. Unless Adobe investigates, finds and corrects the cause of the problem, it seems likely to re-occur. Only fixing the cause of the problem (which must lie in the new (different from ACR 6.1) code of ACR 6.2 and 6.3RC) could be be truly regarded as a solution.
Here is how I enabled Bridge to display my affected TIFFs and TPGs correctly, that is, with no amount of overexposure. These steps apply equally to B&W and Colour images.
For a 16-bit TIFF, duplicate it in Bridge (Edit/Duplicate) and then open the duplicate in ACR 6.2 or 6.3RC (ACR) hosted by Bridge. Make sure that all the sliders are zeroed in the Main panel and that the Amount slider in the Sharpening section of the Details panel is also set to zero (to avoid unwanted additional sharpening). Then open the image in Photoshop (Ps) and immediately save the image (Save As) over itself (yes, you're replacing the file) back in the folder from which you opened it into ACR, making sure to choose no compression. The resaved duplicate will now be displayed with its proper exposure in Bridge, and any further TIFFs or JPGs (whether 16-bit or 8-bit) derived from this file will also be displayed correctly. Following this procedure, my invariable experience is that I end up with a TIFF either the same size as or smaller than the affected TIFF.
Why no compression? Strangely, if you choose LZW compression (really the only logical alternative to "None") you end up with a larger file than you get with no compression. I have no idea why. Why not simply fix the affected file instead of a duplicate? No reason really, other than safety. If things go belly-up you still have your original, albeit, affected file. I also intend to keep my affected files for awhile just in case of some possible desire or need to re-examine them in the future.
For an 8-bit TIFF, although I don't have any which are affected, the procedure would be the same as for a 16-bit TIFF. You will need to conduct your own tests regarding compression/no compression and the resulting file size.
For a JPG, the procedure is pretty much the same (duplicating, opening in ACR, zeroing all sliders, opening in Ps and then saving over itself) but when saving try choosing Maximum Quality (12) which mostly, for me at least, produces a replacement JPG the same size as the original affected file. Of course, you can choose a greater level of compression if you wish, and my tests show that this will not adversely affect the outcome. You can use the replacement JPG to produce further, derivative 8-bit TIFFs or JPGs and all will display properly exposed in Bridge.

  • Why can't i save in 2Gb tiffs photoshop?

I am photographing my paintings in sections importing into lightroom applying colour correction then using a export preset, exporting to photoshop to merge to panoramic, saving as a tiff file back to lightroom 5.. However i'm getting a error message stating the image is too large for a tiff file. (over 2gb) So I then save in photoshop as a PSD.  then back in lightroom 5 i then export the PSD with a custom preset back into lightroom as a tiff file with no problems ... Why can i save the original tiff file, makes no sense..

    Hi monikak,
What happens when you try to save your files to your Acrobat.com online account? Are you receiving an error message? If so, what is it?
Also, it would be helpful to know what web browser you're using, and whether the problem occurs if you sign in using a different browser.
We look forward to hearing back from you.
    Best,

  • Aperture 1.1 will not import tiff file if name is the same as the raw file

Before Aperture I would open up a raw file in Photoshop, edit it and save it as a tiff or a psd file keeping the same name. When I import a folder of images saved like this the only files I see imported are the raw files and any tiff or psd file I renamed to something else. I tried looking under Images> New version from jpeg and it's grayed out with no option to see a tiff file.
I took a quick look and searched through the forum and found nothing. I can't be the only one doing this!

That's a ridiculous bug and the fact that you cannot see the entire filename (.nef, .tif, .psd) on the light table (except in tooltips) is pretty incredible too. It's like they were assuming there was no other previous workflow.
A workaround seems to be putting all the like named files in another folder before importing into Aperture. Time consuming if you have a few hundred projects and it could result in losing a few files here and there plus you need to manually add them to the proper stacks.
The concept of Aperture is still brilliant it just needs a lot more beta testing. It's kind of like Apple making Spotlight the default without giving you the option of using the clean straight forward old Find.

    Hi -
Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any changes you can make to the router or phone service to change the way the voice mail indicator work with various phones.
The stutter tone has been a standard for a long time - I'm not sure what the variables might be between phones, but I've read a number of accounts of folks with other phones that do work the T-Mobile@home service and the Linksys router and activate the VMWI (visual message waiting indicator) properly.
If you haven't yet, I'd suggest trying T-Mobile customer care, asking for the department that supports @home service, or the Linksys router. Unfortunately, with the popularity of the new service, it seems that T-Mobile underestimated the need for tech support on this, and the wait times (which I normally found to be short for T-Mobile over the last 7 or 8 years I've been a mobile customer) are now generally pretty long. But you should be able to leave a phone number, and have them return the call to you if the wait queue is too long.
Also might be worth checking with the phone manufacturer to see if there's anything you can do to modify the way the phone works.
I did a LOT of googling about vmwi's, stutter tones, FSK (another technology for controlling vmwi's), etc. and was amazed at how LITTLE is out there on the net for an industry standard like this.
I wish I had more info to share with you about this. Please post back your experience -- this is clearly an area where we need more information sharing in general.
