.tiff troubles

I am starting to use aperture but I am not a photography pro. I am also new to Mac.
Would anyone mind helping me understand what is going on with .tiff files?
I seem to get these when I scan using my HP 8500 Officejet (I guess this is when they come in) but I have only ever really seen .tif files.
When I go to open them in my ancient version of Adobe Elements or I go to post them on a Wordpress Blog or I go to open them in Photoshop on WinXP on my bootcamp install they are not even listed.
Thanks for any illumination.

Hotwheels,
TIF and TIFF are the same thing. Tagged Image File Format.
TIFF files are lossless, meaning all pixel data in your original is saved. JPG, by contrast, are lossy, meaning after you save to JPG, you cannot get the *exact same* image back when you display it, but your eyes may not be able to tell.
I'm not sure "anything is going on" with your TIFF files related to Aperture.
When I go to open them in my ancient version of Adobe Elements or I go to post them on a Wordpress Blog or I go to open them in Photoshop on WinXP on my bootcamp install they are not even listed.
Are you implying you have non-TIFF files in the same directory that you can open with each of those programs? How do you think this is relate to Aperture?

  • ACR-adjusted tiffs -- trouble actioning

I'm trying to leverage the ACR interface for certain users employing actions. I'd like to create a merged copy of the a doc (with many layers) and save out as a TIF, then reopen as a "camera raw" (CR) file. This process works fine, and you can even open this CR tif as a normal tif and plain save to update the content. Nicely done. But when _actioning_ any open as SO, place as SO, or open as CR the "assignment" to a CR tiff is skipped. I'm not sure how this assignment to CR is registered by the ACR plugin, but it just won't record as an action step (unless you toggle the dialogue checkbox, at which point it works, but certainly not as desired).
I think the above "bug" was experienced by Jeff a while back when someone was trying to open a batch of raw files as SOs in PS.
Is there any way to action adjusting the current PSD in ACR? What are users doing to keep (raw) files editable in light of the healing tools and painting?
    Cross-posted in PS Mac forum.

By now I must have read your cross post in both forums about five times, yet I cannot follow what you are trying to convey.  Must be my old age.

First, one cannot open a TIFF "as a camera raw (CR)" file.  You can open a single-layer TIFF in Camera Raw, but it won't contain any RAW data.
Second, you cannot reopen a camera-raw-adjusted TIFF as "as a camera raw (CR)" file, for the same reason:  it contains no raw data whatsoever.  You can open it in Camera raw, though.

Third, if you manage to to open a "camera-raw-adjusted TIFF" directly in Photoshop—how you do that is a different matter—bypassing Camera Raw, then you necessarily MUST be disregarding the ACR adjustments, as Photoshop cannot read them without the benefit of ACR.

Forth:  One cannot directly open a PSD in ACR.
Fifth: One cannot open a multi-layered TIFF (or any other flavor of multi-layered file) in ACR.
I am not trying to argue anything, I'm just trying to give you a possible explanation of why you have not received an answer.  I am fairly confident that I am not the only one having trouble following your post.

  • TIFF troubles with Lightroom

    LR 1.3.1 Win XP, CS3
When CS3 saves TIFF images exported from LR that have layers, they are saved with:
    ZIP Image compression
    Per Channel Pixel Order
    ZIP Layer Compression.
The Per Channel Pixel Order (RRGGBB) means than most other applications can't read the file.
The TIFF files need to be saved with Interleaved Pixel Order (RGBRGB).
The problem doesn't occur with TIFFs exported by LR when no layers are added in PS. It never happens when TIFF files are created by any other application than LR.
Lightroom is doing something that causes the problem. What can be done to correct the problem.

    Thanks
I think that's your hint. There is something wrong with the location you're trying to copy to, perhaps a lack of authorization. What happens if you copy the images to your desired location and then import to LR, telling the program that you want to leave the images where they are?
You didn't say what version of Lightroom you're using, nor what operating system it's running under, and those pieces of information might help somebody help you.

  • Having Trouble Opening TIFF Files

I'm having trouble opening TIFF files into Camera Raw. I have checked all my settings in Adobe Bridge and everything seems to be saying that TIFF files should open in Camera Raw when I click on then int and then into photoshop when finished editing in camera raw.
I'm trying to open 32 bit HDR images saved as a TIFF file into Camera Raw, and there seems to be nothing I can do to get them there. I have tried everything I can think of. When I right click on it (cmd click I'm on a mac) the option to open in camera Raw isn't there. I have tried clicking and dragging the image into Photoshop to try and force it maybe to open into Camera Raw, and I have opened photoshop and tried opeing it up from mini Bridge. In mini bridge I have the option to open the image into Camera Raw when I click this nothing happens.
I'm not sure what else to try I'm on CS6 and Camera Raw 7.0 .

    Alright I'll try that thanks!

It might be that you need to update camera raw to version 8.3 by going to Help>Updates from within photoshop or bridge.
(i don't remember exactly in which version of acr that was added, but probably after version 7.0)

  • Having trouble saving tiff files to server

    Hi all,
I'm having trouble saving tiff files to our server (a mac pro running OSX 10.5.7 client not server). I get the error message 'could not save "filename" because write access was not granted. The disk in question is set to ignore permissions and the other 3 Macs on the network have no problems.
Bizarrely this only seems to happen when saving as a Tiff file, I can save as JPEG without issue! The file will usually save after a few attempts, sometimes six or seven save as' are needed.
This problem comes and goes, but at the moment its pretty bad.
This is becomming very frustrating as Tiff is our prefered format and we work as a team so have to save to the server.
    Any ideas?

Just to expand on Buko's correct ansswer, this is the boilerplate text I use in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/322391.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

Check File > Document Settings > Raster Effects
    Settings.
The default is 72 dpi which is good enough for screen. 300
dpi is for print (press) but it may make screen redraw very slow.
Note that raster effects do not work well, or at all, in
FreeHand, especially with cmyk colors. And yes, most of the effects
    will blur the object (!?!).
Probably the best way to create these effects is to use
Phothosop. Also in Illustrator the raster effects do work.

  • Can anyone out there help me figure out why I am having trouble opening a gray scale tiff in ID and

I have been opening tiffs and coloring them successfully for years, and all of a sudden it is not working. I made a logo in Illustrator, saved it as an ai, opened that in PS, saved as a grayscale tiff, and then opened it in ID. First the white background box was there, so I went back into Illustrator and knocked out group, then in PS preserved transparancy. I succeeded in losing the white box, but then in ID when I tried to color it, nothing happened. I checked all my ID settings, and just cannot figure out why this is happening.

Colorizing in ID works for NON-transparent grayscales or Bitmap mode raster files only.
A Bitmap mode image in a frame filled with [None] and colorized will appear transparent in the white areas, but you'll need to ad a clipping path for grayscale, or change the blend mode and live with overprints, which you probbly don't want.

  • Trouble importing 32-bit TIFF

I have files from another application that are 1 megapixel with 32bit/pixel depth. Photoshop says the bit depth is unsupported when it tries to read it, but I know the program can work with 32bit/pixel images. I want to be sure I don't lose data on the way in, so converting to 16 bit is not an options. I'm running CS4 extended on Max OSX 10.6.4 with 4GB ram.

Thanks for the reply. I should have specified that the images are monochrome (1 channel) with 32 bits per pixel, as I believe you'd have in an HDR image. The bitdepth parameter on the TIFF (read with another program, Mathematica) confirms that it is 32bit/pixel. The images are captured from a 16bit monochrome camera made by Princeton Instruments (PIXIS) and are accumulated over 10 images using their WinSpec program, which results in something larger than 16bits, so they use 32.
From looking at the Adobe PS documentation, I see that it supports working with 32bit/pixel HDR images, and can at least write 32bit tiffs. Maybe it doesn't read them 32bit tiffs at all, or maybe the program that is writing the files doesn't format the files in a way that PS can read them.

  • Trouble converting TIFF to JPEG

I have a Canon G9 and when I process RAW images in Canon's software, it automatically saves it as a huge tiff tile. I am using Photoshop CS3 on Mac 10.5 Leopard and when I open the TIFF to change it to JPEG, it doesn't offer that option in the "save as" screen.

How many bits per channel? I'm guessing it's 16. You need to convert to 8 under Image>Mode before trying to Save as jpg.

  • Trouble maintaining original "date taken" info and metadata when exporting TIFFs from original CR2 files.

When exporting TIFFs (from original RAW), I noticed my metadata said the "date created" was the day of export. I want to be able to access the date the original image was taken as opposed to the day I exported it. Is there a way to maintain original date of image taken in my info? I couldn't seem to find it after I exported my TIFFs...

I just tested this with LR 5.5 Mac OS 10.9.3 and it works correctly for me.
    To troubleshoot your problem:
    1. Which version of LR and which platform (Mac, Windows)?
    2. Which tool or command are you using to examine Date Created of the exported TIFF?
    3. Upload a sample TIFF showing the problem to Dropbox or similar and post the URL here. This will allow us to take a look in detail.

  • TIFF & PSD Saving-Troubles!!! URGENT!

    Hi guys!
Since 4-5 days i cannot save working TIFFs or PSDs out of PS CS6e (13.1.2) anymore! (out of nowhere!)
The saving process takes forever, and after all the files are corrupt!
So i cant open the PS files in LR5 or any other external viewer...which means my workflow is stopped more or less completly - so URGENT SUPPORT NEEDED!
When i try to re-open the saved PSD it says "End of file corrupt"!

To where are you saving? Is it your local hard drive? Over a network? To  flash drive?
Also, how big is the drive and how much free space is available?
If you are on a Windows system, has the drive been defragmented lately?
IF Mac, have you run Repair Permissions or Verify lately?
Any system specs you can give us might help.

  • TIFFs import - trouble real time rendering/preview

I have just imported 359 uncompressed TIFFs for a 15 sec animation I rendered from 3D Studio Max. I cannot play a preview of it in the FCP as it just comes up with 'unrendered'
I am running the latest Final Cut Studio on a 17" MBP with 4gb ram.
I am brand new to FCP and had the seller of the MBP install it for me, so may be his settings are not best for this. Any thoughts or advice would be very gratefully accepted.
    Mark

Umm, tiff images are not video. they need to be rendered for playback.
Open up your shiny new manuals and read through the sections that relate to "stills cache".
A faster way to work with this is to open up QT Pro, import the images and export a Quicktime movie using the appropriate codec for use in FCP.
    Good luck.

  • Trouble importing tiffs and jpegs

I was importing an image into lightroom in 3 different formats: psd, tiff, and jpeg. I got an error message with the tiff and jpeg stating that the image was already in lightroom. The images all had the same name but were different formats. Does lightroom not recognize that the formats are different and therefore different images, or can it only import 1 format of an image? thanks

LR See's the Others as side cars to the one imported. You can put each type into another folder/directory and they will import. The you can put them all in the same folder from with LR.
This behavior is likely to change, because some many have complained about it. It was not supposed to happen between these three file types, but was impimented for RAW +JPEG pairs, as the JPEG was cnsidered a 'preview' sidecar and JPEGs based on prcessing the RAW could be easily exported at anytime. After much bru-ah-ah, this appears that it will change.

  • Saved Tiffs will not open in CS2 and generate a "Could not complete your request because of a program error".

this was supplied by Ann Shelbourne.
Saved Tiffs will not open in CS2 and generate a "Could not complete your request because of a program error".
These files will often open in Photoshop 7.0.1 or in CS1 but not in CS2.
The trouble may be caused by bad dates in the EXIF data and can originate from an incorrectly-programmed digital camera; or from a scan that was created after after Jan1 of this year (because of a known bug in some scanner software).
If someone runs into the "Could not complete your request because of a program error" problem, and does not have CS1, try opening the Tiff in TextEdit.
The EXIF data is right at the top. Check the EXIF data for bad creation dates and change any incorrect ones there.
Save and close; and then the file will probably open in CS2 without a murmur.
