Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard - Do I need to erase tiger first?

I have the Snow Leopard box set and I'm about to install it. But do I need to erase Tiger first? If so how?
I don't want to install Leopard alongside Tiger obviously, I want to replace it. Will the disk do this automatically?

Whatever you do leave yourself a way to get back to where you started to cover the possibility that your Sno install doesn't go well. In this regard, I would have a bootable clone on an external drive for use in installing Sno and recovering from a bad Sno install.
I still prefer an erase and install, although the upgrade process is very acceptable too. Really, just do whichever your prefer.
If you do an erase and install, then you can restore everything from the bootable clone (if you make one) at the end of the installation--users, settings, data, and apps. In this regard, I would not plug the external in until the last install restartup. If you do an upgrade installation, then all you users, settings, data, and apps should be in place at the end of your installation.
Be sure you are connected to the internet while installing. Doing so will will help getting connect to your network, the internet, and MobileMe (if pertinent).

You will lose the ability to work in any Classic OS applications that ran under system 9.
If I were you, before upgrading do yourself a favor and purchase an external hard drive that you can "clone" your Mac to. If possible, a large enough drive that you can have 2 partitions. In one you would clone your current system and apps. Then after the upgrade, clone again your updated system to the other partition as a emergency backup.
With the clone of your current set up, if need be you can rebbot to it so that you can use any of your "old" applications.

I assume the restart was prompted during the installation process?
First of all, that restart will take several minutes while files are moved into place and should not be interrupted.
If it fails, or you have interrupted the process, you'll need to boot from the installer (hold down the C key on startup) and use Disk Utility to erase the drive prior to continuing the installation.
That will wipe all data on the drive, though, so if you didn't make a backup before beginning the upgrade, you'll need to get your data off safely before proceeding. That may likely require the use of another Mac to access yours in Target Disc Mode.

Upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard 10.6.5

I have a MAC desktop with Tiger 10.4.11 and just recently bought another MAC desktop with Snow Leopard 10.6.5. I want to buy the Microsoft Office Home/Student 2011 for MAC 1 user with 3 license. Question: The older 10.4.11 will not support the 2011 edition of Office. I need to upgrade to 10.5.8 or later on the older MAC. How do I do that? Do I buy Snow Leopard and just install it over Tiger? If there are any other programs installed on the older MAC will they stay work with Snow Leopard? Or... do I need to install Leopard and then Snow Leopard? Thanks.

We'd need to more about that 10.4.11 Mac to see if it could do 10.5.8, or 10.6.5.

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:

Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard 10.6 for $29: Can Someone Please Clarify This

My apologies if this has already been resolved or discussed.
I have spoken to numerous Apple employees and support people regarding if I can upgrade my Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard without having to buy the Box Set (which contains many useless programs). Apparently, Apple has conceded that it is possible and many people have said that it works great. My real concern is if whether it will effect my Applecare, etc. I would appreciate if anyone can clarify if it does in fact work and if anyone can pitch in if affect my warranty.

Says nothing about one's current/previous OS. It's an install, not an upgrade.
Section 2C talks about an "upgrade license", which refers to the $10 upgrade sold to people who bought their Macs after June 6th, does mention that you must have Leopard installed beforehand. This is not the case for the Single Use or Family Pack versions.
And it can't possibly void your computers warranty, since Snow Leopard didn't exist when you bought your computer.

Snow leopard is 30-50% slower than Tiger???

I've recently upgraded from Tiger (10.4.11) to Snow Leopard (10.6.4) and to be perfectly honest, I'm real disappointed. I'm a game developer and the first thing I noticed is that all my games now run 30-50% slower than in Tiger. I've read that this is caused by SL's OpenGL drivers.
1. Is anyone else experiencing this?
2. Is Apple working on a fix for this, and if so, how soon can we expect to see it?
3. Short of buying more hardware, is there anything I can do to fix this?

Sorry if I wasn't clear, the issue is that the games (and the game editor) run 30-50% slower on MY computer (specs below). My development machine has become 50% less useful thanks to SL.

You can migrate to iCloud whilst still using snow leopard, but you will not be able to sync your calendars and contacts on your Mac.
If you are asking whether you should get Lion before or after migrating to iCloud, it really doesn't matter, but I think I would prefer to get it before migrating to iCloud .

You don't need Snow Leopard to clear your Mac.
As long as you have an Intel Mac you can use any Snow Leopard DVD to erase your disk and install.
Perhaps backup your Mac to an external disk first.

You can get the Equivalent Network Password from the menu options of the AirPort Utility as follows:
Start the AirPort Utility; select the AirPort, and then, select Manual Setup.
From the Utility's menu bar, select Base Station, and then, Equivalent Network Password to reveal the hexidecimal key code.

I'd like to know the best way to install Lion. My first generation MacBook white can still run the OS ( I have checked the specs) but the problem for me is that I cannot seem to find a way to install Lion directly since I am still on Tiger.
I have searched Google and saw that the method is to upgrade to Snow Leopard and then Snow Leopard to Lion. Is this true? Or is there any other way to bypass this painful process?
I am posting this as a question about installing Snow Leopard on my mac since I have not found a way to install Lion directly.
Any help or input from you will be greatly appreciated.

You would need to purchase the Lion installer on a USB stick for $69, then boot from that and erase Tiger in order to install Lion.
btw, you keep quoting Tiger, but your profile says 10.5.8 which is Leopard. The answer is the same, whichever it is.
The normal way is to buy Snow Leopard for $29, install that in place (without erasing anything), update to 10.6.8 using the combo installer from Support Downloads, then sign up to the App store and download Lion for another $29.
I don't buy the 10$ saved, since you could make your OWN usb stick install for just the purchase of Lion.
Oh another thing, Lion is not the same price as SL, it's 29.99

I have an old 2007 Macbook pro and I need to upgrade from Tiger OS 10.4.11 to either leopard of Snow leopard because my charger broke and the new charger does not work probably in the older laptops unless you firmare update (which I cannot do as my OS is less than 10.5)
My question is: Will upgrading wipe all the files and programs from my laptop? I have programs that I no longer have the discs, to install them with, for so if they get wiped I will be unable to get them back and they are programs I need on a daily basis. I was just wondering what upgrading from tiger to leopard will actually involve? Will I loose all files/programs so it would be like starting from scratch with a new computer? Or would it not change these things?

Buy an external drive (or two).
Clone your system before you begin.
Repair the drive while at it, Apple First Aid and another 3rd party program.
Make sure you can boot from your backup clone.
Apple Restore is part of Disk Utilty or there is SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Me, I would take the above precautions. Then I would format your drive with SL DVD, and perform and clean install. Do all the updates. Then use Setup or Migration Assistant.
Look for threads, there seems to be 4-5 a week at least on Migrating, going from 10.4 or from PPC to 10.6.
That is the safest. In theory, and YMMV, you could try upgrade in place, but not without backups, and repairing your drive with SL DVD first.

Up Grade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard (Box Set)

I have a two part Question:
Do I have to do a full install or can I perform a partial install and not to up grade to snow leopard using the Box Set. I read stories the snow Leopard up grade is having issues with certain older programs (i.e. Photo shop, Word etc...) Is this true?
I assume the best method to install would be a Clean and Install or is there another way that it's done? The reason I need to up grade is because of my new modem -Airport Extreme, which requires Leopard.

I recommend that you use the upgrade method if your Tiger install is a very good one. Otherwise, I would do an erase and install. The backup process I would use in either case is described below.
Your Mac must meet [these general requirements|http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html]. I would not upgrade to SL unless I had an external drive with a bootable clone of my internal-drive boot volume on it. I think that there is enough risk upgrading to SL that such conservatism is warranted. I would not use time machine for an installation backup; I don't trust it enough. If you do not like SL, then you can restore your internal using the clone. In doing an upgrade install, the clone is your data backup and fail-safe device. You can clone with Disk Utility, SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner. If you do an erase and install, then the clone also is your migration medium.
An upgrade install is performed by installing over your existing installation from the desktop or having started from your SL DVD. Doing so requires you to have a GUID partition. To proceed, start the installer, choose your language, start Disk Utility, make sure your partition is GUID, quit disk utility if it is and continue your installation. All your data, users settings, and apps will be present after your upgrade, except that incompatible programs will be archived in the Incompatible Software folder. It the partition is not GUID, then you will have to do an erase and install.
If you do an erase and install, then make sure your partition is GUID as described above. After you install, then you will be able to use set up assistant to migrate you data, apps, users, and settings to your new SL install. Also, if you have to make your partition GUID, then your drive will automatically be erased Mac extended (journaled). Finally, post back if you choose to do an erase and install. I have more info to provide.
You probably will want to install at least two of the optional install items on your Sno DVD, Rosetta and QT7. You can install either from the Optional Install Items folder on your on SL install DVD.
Leave your Ethernet cable, if any, in place when installing, but unplug all peripherals except those needed to install.
