Tiger (10.4.11) upgrading to Snow Leopard (10.6) without iLife/iWork

Hi Guys!
I have just recently ordered Snow Leopard from apple to upgrade my iMac to 10.6 due to my new ipod and Iphone being unable to sync with iTunes.
Now after ordering i have run into a few worries,
-the first being that i am currently running Tiger (10.4.11) and i am not aware of any back-up solutions, can you recommend any?
-Second is that i did not get iLife or iWork, what i understand it that those are applications such as iPhoto and iMovie etc. What i want to know if that if i upgrade to SL will the applications that i have currently remain there with me being able to access them? Or do i need to back-up the applications as well? Even then will i be able to run them on SL?
-Third is that i have run into phrases such as "Clean Install", and not being used to upgrading i am not very aware of what this means, should i worry about this?

The "retail Snow Leoaprd" does not have the "extras". SL disks that came with systems had "Disk 2" with applications.

Im not quite sure what you mean by this. Does this mean i have to wipe the hard drive before installation?
If you simply upgrade the existing Tiger install, the SL system changes may or may not replace everything necessary. Some user report success, others report very odd irregularities.
Some have no choice but to erase the partition and start with just SL, then use MigrationAssistant to copy user-specific settings.

Can i upgrade from snow leopard to yosemite?

Can I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Yosemite without having a lot of problems? Or do I have to upgrade to something else first? My browser is getting messages that I need to upgrade to work properly. This has never been a problem until now.

For future reference: You don't have to install an upgrade, just because Apple would like you to do so. Never install a major upgrade without first checking to see what problems people are having, and what software will be incompatible. You lose nothing by waiting a while.
You can restore your Snow Leopard system from your most recent complete system backup before upgrading. If you have no backup, you will have to try to back up now, and then you will have to re-install Snow leopard from the system disks that came with your computer. You will have to boot from the Install disk, and erase your drive, and re-install Snow Leopard, then apply the various Snow Leopard updates to get back to 10.6.8. Since I've installed Lion on my early 2009 model iMac, it runs really slow and sometimes is unresponsive. I'm thinking of reinstalling Snow Leopard, removing Lion, but want to know if anyone has done this and experienced any problems or data loss.

Hi Donald,
No it doesn't erase anything by default, it does what we used to call an Archive and Install feature, which can give you a new OS, yet preserve your files and settings if you have enough room on your HD...

But it does it automatically unless you specifically erase the Disk, but will replace Tiger completely for the OS & several Apple Apps like Safari, Mail, etc, yet preserve your old settings for those!
If you think you may need Tiger to run any APPs that do not work in SL/10.6, then clone or backup first.
I would recomend 2 things before installing though...
Make sure you have enough RAM & HD space.

    * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
    * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

Upgrade to Snow Leopard from Tiger - Front Row wont respond to remote?

Hi,
I have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger. I thought I'd better get with it!.
I use front row a fair amount as the iMac is used for multimedia mostly.
However, the computer doesn't respond when I press the menu button on the remote, even when I get really close.
I have check the security settings but they are almost all shaded out. The remote is not paired and the setting state that any remote can be used. However, when the security pane is open the menu button works and opens front row?
It might be irrelevant but I use eye diversity with a remote. I also have B&W speakers with a remote. However, it all worked fine on Tiger.
Having to go onto the iMac to open Front Row sort of spoils the point of having a remote.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Thanks for your input. It seems obvious. Obviously one of those Mac things I hadn't picked up on yet.
Unfortunately the remote still wouldn't pair. I pressed next and menu for ages as instructed but nothing?
I have messed around a bit more and it appears that Front Row works when I quit Eye Diversity TV. The iMac appears slow to open applications with Snow Leopard compared to Tiger, especially after waking. Do you know whether this is normal?
I'll try and raise the issue with EyeTV but clearly something odd is going on. I read a comment that it was best to format the iMac before installing Snow Leopard. I'm just a bit worried about losing the data and programmes I already have on the iMac.

Greetings: I have just acquired an older mini mac (2006 1.66 ghz core 2 duo) Anyway, it had Tiger 10.4 on it and the Bluetooth worked. I upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything works fine - except Bluetooth. The Bluetooth icon isn't there. Any ideas?

The Bluetooth icon does not exist in the System Preferenc screen.
I tried to download Bluetooth from Apple site but the message I got told me that I didn't need it.
Under Finder, Utilities, I found Bluetooth File Exchange but the message I got was that I had to connect a Bluetooth device to my computer.
I have to admit that I have no idea what's going on here. I am hoping to avert the need to try another complete re-install of Snow Leopard.
Any ideas?

Thanks Barry - I found the file and trie to send it to trash. The response: (This item cannot be trashed as it it owned by the system).
After dancing around with PRAM and SMC and turning on while holding the power-cntrl-option-shift and heavens knows what else, I now have the Bluetooth symbol on the top of the menu bar but it is ghoseted and has a squiggly line through it. This, I didn't have before so I read this as some progress. It notes that "Bluetooth is not available">
However, the Bluetooth icon is still missing from the System Preferences window - you know, between "network" and "sharing".
You note that you reckon the issue is not software based and you may be correct. The reason that I wonder about that though, is that before I installed Snow Leopard, the keyboard and mouse both paired with the box under the Tiger 10.4. That leads me to conclude that hardware is functional and that there is some screwy little bit of software that is not cooperating.
If I could delete Bluetooth from the system and re-install a fresh version, that might help. Or, is there a way I can use the Snow Leopard install disc and only load in Bluetooth?

I was wondering if I could upgrade from osx tiger v10.4.11 to osx Snow Leopard v10.6 for 29$ or at a lower cost than full price. I do not need to upgrade that much because 10.4.11 is so great and I hate to leave it. Paying the full price of an operating system does not make sense to me. I am trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 from Tiger 10.4.11 with an external DVD drive. The disc loads OK and prompts me for my password to restart and begin the installation. On restart, instead of being asked to accept the terms of use and etc... I just get the same prompt to restart and get caught in a loop. Any tips?

Try this instead:
Boot Using OPTION key:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
4. Select the disk icon of the Snow Leopard DVD.
5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

Also, will I lose data from the hard drive in the upgrade process? I have Time CapsuIe but I cant back it up to it because I dont have Time Machine on Tiger. I have my iPhone synced to this computer so will I have a problem syncing after the upgrade and losing data? Lastly, will the upgrade affect the partitioned OS with Parallels and Windows XP that is installed?

technically, yes. legally? far from clear. there is no agreement on the issue on the forums. it's clear that apple intended the 29$ disks to be used by leopard owners only but they didn't manage to specify it clearly enough on the packaging and in ULA. hence the arguments. in view of this you can do as you like.

a regular upgrade preserves your data. but you should make a full backup regardless. you should always back up and it's doubly important before upgrades. make a full bootable clone of your current Tiger system using CCCloner or Superduper. test that it works and then upgrade.

   6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion do a new install.
Or...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.

Upgrade from SNow Leopard to Tiger question.

I have Max OS X 10.6.8 with Intel Core Duo. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. Can I upgrade to Tiger even though I do not have Inter Core 2 Duo?

Take time and read many discussions about Lion first. New concepts like can make life interesting:
No physical install disks, but downloaded over internet when you need to reinstall
A hidden Recovery Partition that must be protected during customizations of disk partitions
PPC applcations no longer run
Scrolling is "backwards" to what SL has because it behaves more like iPads than computers
Lion-original machines cannot run any OS prior to Lion, so no "SL partition for running PPC applications"
I am not saying "do not upgrade", just "read first". Those who run Lion will help you with any Lion issues.
As to upgrading the hardware ... good luck with that. Look on "ifixit.com" or Google it, but I have built PCs (installed the CPUs myself) and it can be trickybusiness.

Problems with wireless mouse/keyboard after upgrade to snow leopard

I am wondering if someone has some insight for me. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger. I have been using a Logitech S 530 wireless keyboard/mouse combo for a few years. I am now having problems with them irratically.
1. When on line and the page is large, I often cannot move the blue bar at the bottom of the screen to scroll to the right. What happens is like a stutter; as I am dragging the bar, it and the page shake rapidly side-to-side. Sometimes, I can drag it to the right, but as soon as I let go, it snaps back to the left. This does not happen in Word.
2. When in boxes with dropdown options, only occasionally does that happen. The dropdown either doesn't show, or it flashes quickly. Sometimes it will work after clicking many times. This happens with dropdown menus as well as search boxes that have dropdown choices for previous searches or suggested searches a la Google.
3. When I use my function key or mouse to display all windows, I can't choose the one I want. Regardless of which one I put my cursor over, only the left-most one is highlighted and comes to the front when I click.
4. There is a varying lag. Sometimes the system is responsive, and other times there is a lag of varying lengths before the system responds to the mouse action (click, drag, zoom, etc.)
5. For a while, my left mouse button wouldn't work. I reconfigured it, that seems to have done the trick.
6. Today, I can't open any of the menu items on Firefox. I can move the cursor there, but when I click on any of them, nothing happens. This is okay in Safari.
I have disconnected and reconnected the usb, restarted the computer, and tried to reinstall the software for the mouse and keybord. When I did that, I got a message saying it couldn't install on the current OS, so I went to Logitech and dowloaded and installed the latest version (which indicated it is for OS X 10.6.8.)
I don't know if this is a Snow Leopard problem, but it started sometime after I upgraded. Thanks in advance for any help!

Update all your third party software or uninstall and reinstall 10.6 versions.
If your going to 10.7, be warned a lot of software will not work at all and your 10.5 era machine will be slow, perhaps even have problems as 10.7 is problematic on older hardware.

Cannot upgrade to snow leopard

I have a late 2007 iMac (2GHz core 2 Duo). Since I purchased it, it has run Tiger, then Leopard flawlessly. I recently bought a Magic Trackpad which required me to upgrade to Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, 10.6 seems to kernel panic almost as soon as it boots up. If I downgrade back to 10.5, all works fine again. I have tried the following:
1. Clean install of 10.6 = kernel panic once the OS boots
2. Clean install using another 10.6 installation disk = kernel panic once the OS boots
3. Swap out RAM = kernel panic once the OS boots
4. Boot from an external 10.6 disk = kernel panic once the OS boots
More often than not, I can boot into safe mode with Airport disabled although sometimes (seemingly random) that also kernel panics. I am completely stumped here and would appreciate any help please. I don't want to be stuck in Leopard for all eternity! BTW I did take it into the Apple Store, and the "geniuses" claimed it was fixed - took it home and it wasn't. Are you trying to boot off a 10.6.5 updated system, or a 10.6.5 installer DVD from another Mac? According to;

The build and Darwin version belong exclusively to 10.6.5.
Your Mac can only boot off 10.6 and 10.6.3 retail to install 10.6, as well as systems upgraded from those 10.6 installations on your specific model and vintage iMac. But it can't boot off another Mac's installer. The 10.6 installer DVD must look like *
and not say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM.
