Tiger 10.4.4 Slow Afp access when AppleFileServer app takes up 100% CPU

I'm hoping maybe someone here will have a clue on this because so far everyone else I've talked to doesnt!
G4 Xserve Specs:
G4 1Ghz Proc
1.5 Gig Ram
x2 60Gig drives (Software Stripe)
LAN: 1Gig Asante 1000SX Fiber Card (w/ tiger drivers from Manufacturer)
Previously running 10.3.9 then upgraded to 10.4.4
Supports: Mac Manger (90 clients doing MMLocalPrefs)
Reading Counts (about 60 concurrent clients)
General Shares (130-160 clients) basically just mounts were people backup their local documents.
Any given time about 250 users connected
Users all in NetInfo
Problem:
Over Christmas break we upgraded our existing Xserve G4 Slot loader server from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3. When we returned from the break and all the teachers were back on we noticed that AFP file transfers were very slow. Mac Manger login, Reading Counts, Grade Quick, and even general shares were not responding as quickly as they did prior to the upgrade. The day after everyone returned the 10.4.4 update became available. We upgraded and still had the same problem. I called Apple support who ran me through plugging a machine directly into the server and more or less that was very fast. They blamed our switch gear and that was more or less the end of the conversation.
Through the next 3 weeks I probed our switch guy for a resolution. He made modifications which seemed to get us a little fast, but still not back to where we were. So at the end of the 3rd week we paid a consulting company to come in and turn the new G5 server we recently purchased into the new main server. 10.3.9 Was installed then upgraded to 10.4.4. After all patches were applied we migrated the Netinfo users into Open Directory, moved over their home directories, Reading Counts databases, and Grade Quick databases. Also all Mac Manger stuff was recreated from scratch. Here is what I ended up with:
G5 Xserve Specs:
G5 2Ghz Proc
3 Gig Ram
x1 80 Gig drive (for System)
x2 400 Gig drives (Software Stripe for storage)
LAN: 1 Gig onboard NIC Copper
10.3.9 Installed for MM usage then upped to 10.4.4
Supports: Mac Manger (90 clients doing MMLocal Prefs)
Reading Counts (about 60 concurrent clients)
General Shares (130-160 clients)
Users all in Open Directory
The next morning when all the users came in things were better. Processor was no longer going to 100% early in the morning and staying there all day like it previously had. However it would do so on occasion still. Often staying at 100% for 30 mins and then dropping for no reason. When we continued to have the problem I decided to drop some clients. We previously had all student machines in one of our Elementary buildings doing MM logins as well. It was felt that these student (1 acct for each grade level) accounts could have corrupt files (which Disk Utility doesn’t pick up) because we were allowing them Multiple Logins with the same account. MM was disabled on all these machines and so were the accounts. This dropped us down to approx. 50-60 MM clients and again we seen an improvement. CPU was still sticking but not nearly as long.
So that more or less brings us up to current. Here are things I’ve tried which don’t really fit too well into the above timeline, but were all done after the new server came online:
- Went to all MM machines and deleted all the prefs from them. Also deleted the Classic folder out of all users’ profiles forcing new prefs to be created.
- We had Mac Manger set to copy all prefs to the machines. Changed it to just internet and Admin prefs.
- Have tested with different buildings disabled to see if one building was more so an issue then another.
As it stands now when my CPU hits 100% the AppleFileServer app according to Top and activity monitor is using all of it. The hard drives are not blinking and the network graph is only showing approx. 400Kbs of traffic average. All I’m hearing from Apple is that I’m serving too many people which if my HDs were blinking like crazy and the server was putting out some decent network through put I would understand. Others have told me its all Mac Manger’s fault. Again though prior to the upgrade I never had any problem with this stuff! Even when I had high CPU usage in 10.3.9 it was barely noticeable by my network users both MM and regular shares.
Any one have any ideas?

Xserve G4 and Xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Lots of Imacs, G4s, Ibooks, and now some Mac Mini's and G5s

Hi folks.
I've upgraded my servers to OS X 10.4.5 server...
We're still experiencing slowness with clients (about 35), with network home folders. Especially noticable when more users are on-board.
But even with just a few users logged in. And logging in seems to take longer (30 secs, instead of say, 10 secs).
And file transfers are painfully slow.
Logging in as a "local" admin user on the machine works great -- file transfers are faster too.
Previously, we had a whole boat-load of other services on this particular server box. I've been progressively moving them off to other/new boxes... Aiming for the "one server - one service" principle.
We also have a file-sharing volume, and Mail on the same box as the LDAP authentication/home folders, so I'm migrating these services to new boxes too (easier said than done in a production environment!).
I usually run this command in a terminal window on a given machine or server, to see what's running at the time...
run top -us 10 5
Check how many page in-outs you have as well (listed in the info at the top of the 'top' command when it's being run).
Other changes...
I've recently put in 10/100/1000 HP switches to see if that helped (was 10/100 hubs and switches); that helped a lot, but the problems are still bad. I also upgraded my OS X Server boxes to 5GB of RAM.
We're not a design studio... We're just an office with a "standard" load of documents being opened, editted and saved. Occasional PDFs, that type of thing. But mostly Word docs, web browsing and Mail.
Hopefully migrating the large shared folder and Mail services will help too.
I suspect any directories with a large number of files will be contributing (500+ files in a directory). But I don't have many/any like this.
Add to that, using apps like Office/Word or Quark across a network, and that will definitely contribute.... Hence my reasoning to separate the stand-alone file-share to a different server box.
I've also got client machines to only check mail every 15 minutes (especially until I get migrate them to another box).
I'm also getting my network cabling checked out, just in case ... it is a few years old after all !!! I've replaced suspect patch leads with new CAT5 or CAT6 leads, and destroyed the old ones.
Also, try checking through all your Log files on both the server, and a 'typical' client machine or two. I've noticed some 'interesting' entries in the Directory Services client log file, for example, talking about "Network transition occurred" and so on.
My HP managed switches also report some CRC errors, and the occasional duplex-mismatch error... and a few traffic "errors", which I didn't know about until the managed switches were installed. (Might be solved by setting the speed/duplex of the port / Mac manually, or could be cabling issue).
My client machines are all iMac G4's and iMac G5's. Oh, and occasional recent Powerbook G4's, with gigabit networking.
Let us know if anyone has a break-through!
Cheers,
Derek!

went to leave this in the feedback section but that doesnt work either, nothing gets sent. but anyways, new tabs always feeze or stall for over a min, using 100% cpu. running mac 10.6.8. never had problem on earlier versions of ff but ff5 is broken im sorry to say on macs. please advise or fix, more and more people are experiencing this same issue but nothing is being done to resolve.

16gb aint enough lol> imac 27 , top of line, ssd hdd, 16gb ram, all updates, if memory was bad it would happen on other browsers or apps, only happens when you specifically open a new tab.

  • Ipod touch 4G - keyboard access when updating apps

When going to update my apps a window pops up with my Apple ID and asks me for my password. When I click in the password box the keyboard does not appear making it impossible to input the password.  Can anybody help?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • Please help: Course loads very slow and takes almost 100% cpu and 1.08 GB memory

The total page number is 129. We used Captivate 5.5. We have several Webpage widgets and a few videos. I tried to take out the web widgets and the videos, however, the course still loads very slow.
I would really appreciate if someone can give somve suggestion.
    Thank you very much.

Captain Ibuprofen, we actually continued having the slowness problem in the past week. Then one of our developers found out the reason: as same as yours, caused by the page number widget. I wish we would have seen your response earlier. But yeah, so now we took out the page number widget and everything goes normal.
Also thanks for the tips on using the cpInfoCurrentSlide variable when adding the slide number. Thanks Andy.

  • Why "slow server alert" when NO running requests and NO open connections??

The snapshot below says it all.  Why on earth would my dev machine with no running requests, and no open database connections, kick off a slow server alert?
I will tell you that at the exact same time this snapshot was generated, my other two servers WERE hung and were reporting "Unresponsive alerts", and they connect to the same databases.  I am chasing down a chronic communication failure between our database and web servers where everything with a databae connection gets locked/hung at the same time every night, 7 days a week.  The hang lasts anywhere from a few mins to 40+ mins.
Is this why my dev server would report slow?  And if so, is it the skimmers or what that's causing a slow server alert??  Would it only report "Unresponsive" if there were actual page requests hanging, vs. a "Slow Server Alert"?
This is CF10 (update 12) 64-bit on Windows 2008 R2, IIS 7, connecting to separate Oracle 11g server.
    Thanks for any insights.

I'm pretty sure the problem here is somehow related to my other post, but for shites and grins I would still like to know how I can receive a Slow Server alert when no actual page requests are running and it says there are 0 open connections to any of the datasources.

  • Hierarchical menu access when placing an image

How can I get Illustrator to go back to accessing an image folder that is in one of my client project folders when placing an image instead of taking me back to the  main level of my hard drive every time. It used to do this but quit doing so.
For example, my hard drive is set up as Hard drive/Clients/Client Name/12_100 Project _A/x_Linked Images. When working in illustrator, I have set up a keyboard shortcut of Command/e to place an image. The first time I place an image I have to navigate to the project x_linked images folder for the first time. Everytime I need to place a new image, Illustrator used to take me right back to that same x_Lnked Images folder. Now it takes me back to the main level of my hard drive and I hve to click through all of the folders again to get there. Does that make sense? It's slowing me down when I'm working.
    Thanks, Bruce
    CS5, Mac OSX Lion

I'd get Default Folder X from insidersoftware.com if you want to solve this issue. It's mostly a Mac OS issue and pops up depending on what bugs Apple introduces into whatever version they release. Some OS versions go back to the proper folder, other's don't. With Default Folder.. they always do (among other things)

  • ODBC Slow resonse time when connecting to SQL SERVER on Azure VM

    Hello,
I have extra small AZURE VM with SQL Server Express 2008.
I managed to connect to the SQL Server by ODBC connection (from access).
The problem is that the response time is very slow and it is not usable.
How can I improve the response time?
If I will use bigger VM or use AZURE SQL SERVER (instead of installing SQL SERVER on VM)
will the response time be better?
    Thank you for your help

    Hello,
In addition to resoure of the windows Azure VM, the network and the query may also result to the slow response. When create a Windows Azure SQL Database, it also share resources with other services.
You can refer to the following blog about manage connections in Windows Azure SQL Database:

  • Office documents slow to open when on non-domain LAN.

Our notebooks are all connected to our domain. When you open an MS Office document (Word, Excel, etc..), while in our domain, they open fast. They open fine on network shares and on the desktop.
When you are out of our domain, and try to open documents on your desktop, they open fast.
When you are out of our domain and connect to a wireless network (at home for instance) and try to open documents from your desktop, it is very slow.
When you connect to our domain from that wireless using VPN, the documents on your desktop open fast again.
It is just slow when you are out of the domain (no VPN connection) and on a network.

I agree that the problem is due to non existent printers and perhaps network file shares. Our users have 5 network shares mounted and at least 3 networked printes connected.
The printers show up as offline when outside of the domain and the shares show up as disconnected. When our notebook users are outside of the office and not connected to a network, documents open fast. The slowdown comes when our users are on a non-domain
network and when they are not VPN'd into our domain. For some reason MS Word and Excell checks for access to every printer and maybe file share when a network connection is present.
One of the things that we’ve done in the past is to create a little batch script that disconnects the networked drives for everyone. We could add the disconnection of printers
too, but that’s going to be too cumbersome for most of our users, because they will have to disconnect the drives and printers when they are out of the domain and not VPN’d in. Connect drives and printers when they are out of the domain and VPn’s in. Connect
printers when they are back in the office (drives are automatically connected via login script).
    Now as for your suggestions.
#2 - Setting the last printer used for each application to a local one means that they will have to remember to do that whenever they take documents outside of the office. That’s
not good. I’ll get a lot of complaints if they have to do this for Office apps only. They don’t need to do this for any other application. They just drop those files on their desktop and they’ll open regardless of the network or printer status. I'll try setting
the default printer to the XPS Document writer or another local printer and see it that helps.
#3 – Removing all the prefetch files from c:\windows\prefetch folder is not an option. This folder can be accessed only by administrators. My users are not administrators, so
    that is not an option.
Ideally, what I would like to do is to stop MS Office apps from checking network access when it opens. It seems to be able to do that when there is no network connection. I think
it should only check network access when there is a link to a network location inside the document.

  • Why is it YouTube loads really slow sometimes even when I'm connected to wifi ?

Why is it YouTube loads really slow sometimes even when I'm connected to wifi ?

Hard to say. The speed of your Internet connection. Congestion on YouTube's servers, problems at any point in between you and them... When you are connected to WiFi, you will get a substantially higher resolution version of some videos than you do on 3G.
Are you using the youtube app or are you just accessing it via a web browser.

  • SharePoint 2010 Slow query duration when setting metadata on folder

I'm getting "Slow Query Duration" when I programmatically set a default value for a default field to apply to documents at a specified location on a SP 2010 library.
    It has nothing to do with performance most probably as I'm getting this working with a folder within a library with only a 1 document on a UAT environment. Front-end: AMD Opteron 6174 2.20GHz x 2 + 8gb RAM, Back-end: AMD Opteron 6174 2.20GHz x 2 + 16gb

The specific line of code causing this is:
    folderMetadata.SetFieldDefault(createdFolder, fieldData.Field.InternalName, thisFieldTextValue);
    What SP says:

  • It's very slow to access file server after installed SP1 of Win7.

I found it's become very slow to access shared files on file server after installed win7 SP1, (windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe),  access same file, the win7 without sp1 is fast in 5 secs, but the pc with sp1 need more than 30 secs. And
I tried to removed the sp1, everything goes fine, access fast as others.
I don't understand what's the reason and which feature affected it, I believe the sp1 can help Win7 be more safety, but why the performance on it get worse.
And I didn't find the same question or tips on forum or website, do you really haven't the issue?

The time capsule is running but we have slow access to files, it takes ages to bring up the list of files available, can I fix this?
I have just updated the firmware.
I would also like to know how I can back up these files to another disk.
I have searched the manuals and also the support community but I can't find the answers or any instructions other than the manuals  and would appreciate help.
    Thank you

The Time Capsule was designed to handle Time Machine backups from one or more Mac computers, and it will work reasonably well for that purpose.
But.....and this is a big BUT......it will not work very well at all if you try to make it act as a file server, since the disk spin up time is quite slow among other things like slow read times from the disk.
Suggest that you get with an IT specialist who can recommend the right file server solution for your network based on your needs.
As far as backing up the data on the Time Capsule, the simplest way to do this is connect a USB drive to the USB port on the Time Capsule and use the built in Archive function in AirPort Utility to make a complete copy of all of the data on the Time Capsule.
Unfortunately, the simplest way is also the slowest and the Time Capsule will not be available for Time Machine backups or file serving during the Archive procedure, which will likely take 4-6 hours or so depending on how much data might be on the Time Capsule.  A good time to do this might be late at night, so the Archive copying will run overnight.
Another better option would be to use a commercially available application, like Carbon Copy Cloner to automatically back up the Time Capsule disk each day at a time that you choose.  The advantage to doing it this way is that CCC will only back up the changes that have occurred since the last back up, so once the first "master" backup is done, the subsequent "incremental" backups will only take a few minutes each day.
Your IT specialist / consultant will likely have other suggestions for you as well. The advice that we have offered here is meant to be general in nature and not specific to your particular needs.
