Tiger 10.4 and Safari

I just loaded a newly purchased copy of Tiger on my 2 year old E-Mac, G4.
It loaded well but now Safari runs slow and will not access my email on Yahoo.
It accesses some sites, however slowly. It will not open yahoo mail.
At my office I can access the site via OS 10.3 and Safari 1.2.
I downloaded the 10.4.2 upgrade, but the installer says that the volume (my hard drive) is incompatible with the upgrade!
How can I use the upgrade and get Safari to work agin.

Thanks for the reply. I called SOS apple - help line. We used the system updated to get to version 10.4.2.
It didn't help! I couldn't even get on this site to reply to you (I am at my office using good old 10.3). Wish I never tried Tiger!
I can't open my yahoo mail box. Using Tiger. I tried useing Microsoft Explorer and still can't access the email. The problem has to be Tiger. Not Safari.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Now at home I'm stuck with Tiger.

  • Tiger going crazy on iBook G4 with new security update and Safari 3

    I'm running 10.4.11, 1.42GHz PPC G4 with 1.5GB of SDRAM.
So I ran software update where I noticed new Security Update and Safari update.
I tried to run the new Safari - Nothing, it's dead, no action! ( could hear hard drive but no action)
Today I tried running 'Software Update', it's spinning it's wheels, over and over again.
I'm sure Apple is working on sending me an email, as they got the skinny when the program crashed I forwarded the system message.
So a bit frustrated hear, I'm using Safari and getting to know Camino.
The Biggest frustration is that 'Mail' will not boot up so I use my internet to check mail, bummer.
So lets hope we get some info soon.

If you are operating behind a proxy server, maybe this will help.
With regards to crashes from behind a proxy server, I came up with a work around!
I have been using Automatic proxy configuration using a .pac file. That seems to be causing the error.
After inspecting the .pac file, and following the if, ifelse path, at the very bottom is a proxy address and port for unclassified connections. Mine looks like this
    proxy.sun.ac.za Port :####
I have put this into my System Preferences for all connection types, manually. This is found under, System Preferences: Built-in Ethernet: Configure Manually...
Then you need to go through the box on the left and check each box. As you do so, paste the default proxy address and port in the open boxes on the right.
Hope this work around helps. My Quicktime is still not working for my older .avi files.

  • DivX "for Mac" and Safari -- anyone get it to work on Snow Leopard?

Pardon me for the length of this post --  it's just a very involved question to which DivX has no answers, and I've literally wasted this entire week trying to get the so-called DivX "Bundle for Mac" to work, with absolutely no joy.
    27" iMac Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz, 12 GB RAM, OS X 10.6.7
    Safari (v. 5.0.5 [6533.21.1])
    Safari Extensions:
    DivX HiQ 2.1.1.94
    DivX Plus Web Player HTML5 <video> 2.1.1.94
As anyone who has used YouTube in the past year or however long this option has been available, many videos, under the regular YouTube control bar at the bottom of the video window, have an additional option: DivX HiQ, with a blue "play" button with black arrow, and in white text on black, the message "Press play for higher quality video." EVERY SINGLE time, until yesterday (about which more anon) I've selected DivX HiQ, the YouTube screen turns into the gray DivX Plus player window for a few seconds, sometimes I get a brief "Buffering…" message (sometimes not)* (see below), then a window pops up telling me "DivX Plus Web Player could not download the video, please check your internet connection." (screen shots on request).
I have DL'd AND installed -- several times over the past few days -- DivX for Mac, version 7.3 (right up-to-date as of 11-30-10 -- great support for the Mac OS), with little or no success or noticeable results. Finally, yesterday, it somehow (I thought) installed correctly: at least instead of nothing whatsoever happening after the install, this time I was whisked magically away to <<http://www.divx.com/en/software/download/installed/mac?os=mac>> where I was rather breathlessly informed "Congratulations! You can now enjoy the highest quality digital video | divx.com." Well, this was something new -- this was the first time I'd ever gotten this far. Then I was shown many movies, promising new marvels:
The first movie informed me "You have successfully installed DivX software." This WAS something new. Then it told me about the "DivX Plus Web Player… Now Featuring: DivX HiQ… Boost web video quality and performance… … Look for the DivX HiQ Button on your favorite video sites… see better quality and performance with a simple click… Try it out on your favorite sites… YouTube. Vimeo. And more.
Then I played the NEXT movie, all about the DivX Plus Player, and here I TRULY saw something I'd never seen before: *a DivX Plus Player window, that actually said " Connecting… Buffering: … " and then -- mirabile dictu! -- an actual video began to play, and actually continued to play, with no stops, fits, or error windows, right up until the end. This WAS something new under the sun. It continued, extolling the manifold virtues of "DivX to go," which was of no use to me. The next video was about the DivX Plus Codec Pack, and the video told me about the wonderful things DivX could do in Windows 7, if I was brain-dead enough to USE Windows 7. Useless info, but that video, too, opened up the way I believe the *HiQ videos are supposed to open up in YouTube, for example: "Connecting… Buffering: …," and then actually opening and playing. BTW, I hate to sound like a troglodytic Luddite, but I have no idea what "MKV" video is.
The final video, which ALSO opened up the way I believe the *HiQ videos are supposed to open up in YouTube, for example: "Connecting… Buffering: …," spoke to me about the manifold joys of DivX Plus converter, which ALSO requires the DivX Player application, and since the DivX Player application (v.7.2 (build 10_0_0_184, Copyright © 2006-2009 DivX, Inc.), which, I was given to understand, was actually a PART of the DivX software I had finally "successfully installed" (according to divx.com's delirious greeting), has never worked, none of what all these videos talked about was going to do me much good. HOW has it never worked, you ask? It has never worked in this way: I click on the DivX Player app icon, the DivX Player window opens, and the Mac OS beach ball spins merrily away, and spins, and spins, and spins -- at this point, I usually go to the kitchen for another cup of the strengthening coffee and the hopefully headache-reducing ibuprofen. When I come back, the beach ball is still spinning, so, resignedly, I go to the "Force Quit" command, where, invariably, I see the message "DivX Player not responding," and, resignedly, I force quit it. Again. This scenario has occurred without variation every single time I've tried to open the DivX Player application. It has never actually opened correctly, it has always shown up in the "Force Quit" window with the comment "DivX Player not responding," and I have always had to Force Quit it.
Now Here's what may be termed the icing on the cake: fairly well buried in the "DivX for Mac" install package is a pdf "read me." Among many other fables is THIS whopper:
"For online video tutorials visit the following URL in your web browser: http://go.divx.com/mac/tutorials"
I did just that, and though the link works, there IS no page on the DivX site for "Mac tutorials." When you click on the link, you get redirected to "http://support.divx.com/faq/view/supportFAQen100/video_tutorials_main." Except for a video tutorial under "DivX Converter_ -- for which I have no use -- entitled "How To Edit Your DivX Converter for Mac Output Settings," and these two: "How To Export To DivX In Final Cut Pro for Mac," and "How To Export To DivX Using QuickTime On A Mac" -- neither of which do me the slightest bit of good, since A) I don't use, nor can I afford, Final Cut Pro, and B) what good would it to to export ANYTHING to DivX when the DivX Player for Mac does not, and has never, done anything but hang until Force Quitted?
A brief digression on that very subject of "hanging:" there's a little section in the obscure "DivX for Mac" pdf that reads:
    "5. Known issues
Network connection is lost during download
A lost network connection in the middle of a download may hang the DivX Player For Mac. If this occurs, you may 'Force Quit' the DivX Player For Mac by simultaneously clicking command-option-escape and selecting the application from the list or by right-clicking the icon in the dock and selecting 'Force Quit.' You may then resume the download by re-launching the DivX Player, selecting 'Download Manager” from the File menu and clicking 'Resume.'"
Wonderful advice, if I could ever get to the point where I was actually downloading something, but since MY particular edition of DivX Player for Mac saves me all that bother by hanging immediately upon launch, DivX has very kindly saved me the trouble of having to go through all that "Force Quit" - "Resume" nonsense. Of course, I never get to download anything or use the DivX Player on YouTube or anywhere else, so that's a bit of a downside.
So back to the putative "Mac tutorials" on the non-existent "http://go.divx.com/mac/tutorials" page: other than the three totally non-germane examples I cited above, there is nothing that I can find on the re-direct page (http://support.divx.com/faq/view/supportFAQen100/video_tutorials_main) that is the least concerned with the usage or behavior of any component of DivX on a Macintosh computer. That's certainly not uncommon, but for a company that purports to sell products that actually work on the Mac OS X platform, EVERYTHING about the DivX site is so totally Windows-centric, one would be inclined to believe that DivX is not even aware the Mac OS X platform exists. For example, here's the list of tutorials under "DivX 101 - Learn How" on the page that, according to the DivX for Mac Read Me, was supposed to solve all my problems with running DivX on a Mac:
    Featured Video Tutorials
How to register your PS3 for DivX VOD playback
How do I make DivX player my default video player?
How to register your DivX Certified device with the DivX Plus Player
How to stream DivX Plus HD (MKV) files to your Xbox 360
How to use the DivX Plus Converter
    Featured Text Guides
DivX Plus Converter for Windows User Guide
DivX Plus Player for Windows User Guide
    DivX Codec 5.x User Guide
DivX Codec 6 and Virtual Dub Guide
It's wonderful that DivX has tutorials dealing with XBox360 and PS3, but the Mac seems to have been lost in the shuffle -- I think, from an aesthetic point, the guy in the sideways hat and the emphasis on animé and "blow 'em up" games in what few tutorials are actually there pretty much sums up DivX's idea of their market focus. Maybe they're right, but if this "free" version, that so far I have not been able to get to work as advertised on my 27" iMac, is supposed to entice any Mac user into forking over even the piddling $20.00 for the "Pro" version, the "free" version isn't DivX any "gotta have it" favors.
Now for the final mystery: I have two Safari -- v5.0.5 (6533.21.1) -- extensions from DivX:
    1. DivX HiQ 2.1.1.94, which is supposed to allow you to watch videos on YouTube, Vimeo, etc. in the DivX Player for Mac, but refuses to work when enabled: EVERY SINGLE time I've selected DivX HiQ, the YouTube screen turns into the gray DivX player window for a few seconds, then an error window pops up that says "DivX Plus Web Player could not download the video, please check your internet connection."
    2. DivX Plus Web Player HTML5 <video> 2.1.1.94, the little blurb in the Safari Extensions window for which says "Increase performance and video formats for your HTML5 <video>
Clicking on the "by DivX, Inc." link in the Safari Extensions window of either of these extensions takes me to http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/web-player
"High-quality video shouldn’t stop at your browser. DivX Plus® Web Player gives you the best web video performance around, even on sites using Flash®. The latest feature, DivX HiQ™ beta, lets you replace the default Flash player on popular sites for improved performance. Of course you can still watch stunning DivX® and DivX Plus HD (MKV) videos right in your browser, and even enjoy MKV features like multiple audio tracks, subtitles and 5.1 channel AAC audio."
That's all well and good, but, not when it doesn't work. I don't know what the story is with these Safari Extensions: a manual (unfortunately the only way you can do it), category by category search of Apple's "Safari Extensions Gallery" turns up NO information about these extensions, neither does -- as far as I can tell -- a search of the DivX site. Am I supposed to use BOTH extensions? Neither? One or the other? Which? So far, if I use them, I get the HiQ option in YouTube (and elsewhere), but when I click on it, I get the error message above, and the window reverts to the usual plain old YouTube window. If I disable the DivX Safari extensions, I don't even get the HiQ option.
Has ANYONE gotten the DivX for Mac Bundle v7.1, or even the DivX Plus Web Player for Mac, v2.1.1, to actually work on a Mac running OS X 10.6.7?
If so, PLEASE tell me how you got it to work.
I'd gladly for over the 20 bucks for this product if it actually worked, but not until it does.

Well, I can start banging my head against the brick wall again.

You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs. In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/"

    Hi,
Thanks for your answer. After some more experimenting, i finally got it to work ... However, not every embedded DivX movie will play.
I just deleted another codec in the Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime folder. (One of the codecs mentioned on http://perian.org/#support was still in the folder). Before I had only deleted the files whose name has "DivX" in it.
I did NOT install the DivX Web Player plugin.
Now some DivX videos play, some don't... So maybe I should re-install the DivX Web Plugin? But the Web Plugin never worked for me ... If I re-install it, won't I go back to where I started?

It could be that your previous DivX player was out of date.
As Perian says, you need both.
First, I certainly wish you (or my search of Apple Discussions, which, inexplicably, did not turn up this discussion) had referred me to this discussion before -- it would have saved a LOT of time.
Now, to your reply to Philippe Pauwels:  "As Perian says, you need both." Both WHAT, exactly?
From the initial release of Perian 0.5, September 29, 2006, to the latest release, Perian 1.2.2 - Tuesday, April 13, 2011, there is not a single mention of DivX in the entire 2006 to 2011 version history. The only information on the Perian support page regarding DivX is the paragraph that states, in part, "Please consider removing obsolete QuickTime Components: ...DivX, DivX Decoder..."
Can you please tell me what you mean by "Perian says, you need both," in regard to putative DivX Extensions, Plug-Ins, Components, whatever?
Finally, on July 12, 2009, you posted, in a reply to martin Alper, a list of  "the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear/play pretty much everything that the net can throw at you." Taking into consideration that it's 2 years later and most versions have newer updates -- including Mac OS X itself -- some items are no longer among us, and some NEW ones have shown up. could you please update or comment on this list, for the benefit of all sufferers?
    Thank you very much,
    Bart Brown
Your list as of July 12, 2009, taking into consideration your wise caveat that "nothing in life carries a guarantee!:
The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3 and 4, QT 7.4.x, 7.5.x and 7.6 and OS 10.4.11 and 10.5.7.
Download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 11.1 for Mac from:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlas h
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
It is suggested that you first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2009-001 (and for Tiger only, 2009-002). (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
And there is an additional kid on the block: SilverLight. Microsoft has created their own version of what a replacement for Flash could be. You can read more about it here:
    http://silverlight.net/
So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards) if you are using a PPC Mac. Version 2 only works with Intel Macs:
    http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/
Recommendation: Close all applications before installing any of the above, repair permissions, reboot, and repair permissions again.
    Thanks again
    Bart Brown
PS: You wrote "It is a pity you chose a camera that produces video in that format! As you have discovered it is incompatible with iMovie." Uhh, I don't know where this question came from -- more stray copying and pasting, perhaps? I have no camera, and am not trying to do anything pertinent to this discussion with iMovie.

  • Poor performance - QT Player and Safari

Ok, so I've been ignoring this issue on my computer for the longest time and I think it's time I got to the bottom of it.
    I'm using a Quicksilver G4, 733MHz, with 896MB RAM.
Now, previously, prior to upgrading to Tiger, using Panther and QT 6.5 something, Quicktime worked pretty much flawlessly. I was so happy with it. After upgrading to Tiger such a long time ago, I noticed QT 7 wasn't nearly up to par and its performance was very bad.
The real issue here is this: Whenever I watch a streaming movie downloaded from the internet, in Safari, it runs choppy. Choppy as in the framerate stutters considerably, the video will pause while the audio still plays, and it basically renders the video unwatchable. The workaround I've been doing all this time, is: downloading the video onto my desktop and playing it through VLC. (Which it does absolutely flawlessly, mind you.)
Oh but it gets better - when I play these EXACT same video files in Quicktime Player - I get "improved" performance, but it still does the same thing: choppy video playback. Now, when I play these same streaming files in Firefox - they work, smooth as a baby's bottom. Quicktime's streaming plug-in works great. Doesn't make sense...
On top of ALL that: After this problem was already engraved in my head after trying numerous troubleshooting (reinstalling latest versions of Quicktime, clearing caches, making a test user account, A&I, etc....) I eventually upgraded my computer, and put another internal 250GB HD in it. So I was basically starting from scratch - a complete erase and install of the HD.
Lo and behold, Quicktime STILL did it. - same exact problem. So I gave up for a while and have been using VLC ever since. Or Firefox.
So that's my problem guys - any suggestions would be nice, or if you'd like, just tell me to keep using VLC and/or Firefox as workarounds and don't even try to fix it. ¬_¬
    Quicksilver Powermac G4 733Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   894MB RAM, 250GB & 40GB HDs
    Quicksilver Powermac G4 733Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   896 MB RAM, 250GB & 40GB HD

I do not use Safari. However, I found this troubleshooting technique in the MacAddict Magazine December 06 issue:
To fix a QT related problem w/Safari, quit Safari & look in the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder (this is the Library folder at the root level of your HD, not the one inside your Users/user name folder).
Try removing the VLC Plugin.plugin (if you have it) & QT Plugin.plugin files from this folder, & then relaunch Safari. If the problem isn’t fixed, a different plug-in may be to blame. Keep removing files from this folder (start with any third-party plug-ins that are present) until the problem disappears.
Replace the plug-ins that don’t cause any problems.

  • Problems with iChat and Safari

Yesterday I got to work and started up my beloved iMac G5, but iChat would not open and it gives me the following note: The application iChat quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
I have tried to reopen and sent several reports to Apple but nothing has helped so far. It is also doing this with my Toast 7 and Safari will unexpectedly quit in the middle of an action.
Has any one else experienced this kind of problem? I'm running Tiger as an operating system and I'm the only one at the office that is having this problem. And my system at home, which is the same, if fine as well. I ran Disk Utility, which found a preference problem that it said it fixed. I haven't gone further yet, since I still need to actually USE my computer during work hours, but if anyone has an idea, I would greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks!

Find the program Pacifist online. Run it with your Tiger DVD in the machine (don't boot from it) and re-install iChat.
    Let me know!

  • Question marks instead of pictures - Mail and Safari

I have the latest Tiger software installed including Safari, but when Apple sends out e-mails they show up with blank boxes with question marks, and I get the same thing when I go to their web site.
The emails sometimes will fix themselves magically later. (I haven't a clue)
    This brings up two questions:
    1) What's going on with my computer.
    2) How intelligent is Apple's Marketing Department, that their adds can only be read by people who already have the latest and greatest computers/software?
(That second one is rhetorical, for those that missed the sarcasm.)

    Since you asked!
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )

  • Starting All Over With OS X and Safari After Update And Crashes

I had posted my troubles in the Safari Section under the same title and got fabulous advice. I was just starting the process of following this advice so that I could get my mac back up from 10.4.7 to 10.4.11 since the genius' at the bar at Apple had re-installed the OS to fix the crashing Safari, Mail and Software update apps.
The advice suggested starting with a permissions repair and a disk verify. Well disk verify may well have come up with the cause for my computer going foobar upon installing the last Apple update in the first place. (Incredible that the Genius Bar guys missed this, especially the week before when I had taken my Mac Mini in for a Procare "Tune-Up." I wonder what the H-E Double Hockey Sticks they did if they didn't verify the disk in the tune-up? Wouldn't that have saved me all manner of distress and trouble!) Here is what verify gave me:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid index key
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
So..I will need to, if I understand this correctly, re-start from my install disc holding down the C key and then go to disk utility. I have never done this before and really would like some one to walk me through the procedure.
Just to remind or get you up to speed. I have a mac mini that had been bought with 10.3.7 on it and had been updated all the way to 10.4.11 and Safari 3.0.4 but after the last Java, Quicktime, and Security update Safari, Mail, and Software Update all crashed repeatedly. Genius Bar at Apple got them working again by re-installing the OS but put in 10.4.7 and with it Safari 2.0.4. Now I will need to repair the start up disk. Do I use the Mac Mini "Mac OS X install disc 1 and Apple Hardware Test" disc or do I use the "Mac OS X Tiger" disc that I bought to upgrade my Mac from Panther to Tiger? I think the former rather than the latter but I am uncertain and would really like to know exactly what I need to do before proceeding. Please help!
Then.. what do I do after I re-start using the install disc and have gone to Disk Utility. Will it then darken the "repair" button under "disk," and allow me to click on that to repair the disk? What will that do to the applications and documents that I have in the mac. I actually have my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on external hard drives and are backed-up on yet another external hard drive. I think everything is backed-up. I will perform another back-up before I do anything anyway. Do I leave the externals on and connected while doing the re-start using the install disc or do I disconnect them?
As you can tell, this makes me rather nervous. Thank you so much for any help you can offer! -Charlotte

Hi. Sorry for the delay in responding; Holidays as you know. Anyway... Thanks for your advice.
Yes, I put in the Tiger install disc and holding the c key restarted the computer. Went to Disk Utility and ran Repair Disk. Did it twice as you suggested. The first time it said that there was nothing to repair which was a complete surprise. Ran the verify again and ran Repair Disk again. Each time the report shows no problems. After booting back into the main internal hard drive, I ran disk verify again and it reports no problems.
Someone else on a different post on this subject (I accidently posted this in two different places) stated that the Apple Disk Utility Repair would not be able to make this repair and I would have to get Disk Warrior to make the repair. If Disk Verify reports no problems, wouldn't this mean that running the Repair Disk did repair it?
After all this I went to Apple's site and got the combo update and ran Software Update and gotten my little ppc Mac Mini back up to 10.4.11 and Safari 3.0.4. (I ran permissions repair after the updates as well.) I did not, however, download the last Security Update, as some posters have suggested that I avoid it. What do you think of the Security Update 2007-009? Would this be safe to download and install, now that my mac seems to have had it's directory repaired? Thanks so much. -Charlotte

  • Multiple entries on PDA, iCal and Safari bookmarks

I don't know when this started happening, but i have multiple duplicate entries all over my calendar on my Palm and iCal. I also noticed lots of duplicated bookmarks in Safari. I currently sync the Palm, my PowerBook and an older PowerMac at work. All Macs run Tiger 10.4.5.
As a result of all the duplicate entries it takes forever to open iCal, and
and do a full iSync -- currently taking over an hour!
Can anyone suggest a solution? i never had this issue with Panther.
    Thanks!

    12" PowerBook G4, 856Mhz, 1GB ram.   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Palm Zire 72

    Jose,
Thanks. I had already tried that with no success.
I finally figured out what to do, at least in OS X 10.4.10.
In Users/yourname/Library/Application Support there is a folder called "SyncServices" with no mention if iTunes or iPhone anywhere inside. I noticed that it had just been modified. I moved the folder to my desktop and restarted the Mac. When I brought up iTunes there were no categories in contacts, no email accounts to synch, no calendars, etc.
I quit iTunes then launched, Mail, iCal, Address Book, iPhoto and Safari. I launched iTunes again and now all the categories were there. I synched successfully at last.
Apparently it is not just a plist that can get corrupted. I'm not sure which specific file in that folder was the problem. But removing the whole folder didn't seem to take much effort.
Unfortunately I had already reloaded my iPhone software and so all of my settings were gone. A week of training my keyboard were gone. All of the wi-fi networks i had joined would have to be rejoined.
I think from now on I will reload my software only as a very last resort.
I hope this info helps others.

  • 10.4.11 and Safari 3 are cursed!!!!!

I decided to update to 10.4.11 and Safari 3, with some hesitation due to past troubles with updates. Now everything crashes when I try to open it. Safari stays open for about one second before shutting down. What can I do?
    -Tom

Anyway to get back to 10.4.10
Perhaps you should revise your updating methodology. In my experience OS 10.4.11 and Safari 3.0.4 are the best and most effective updates ever.
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating a browser:
Input Managers can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on.

  • Mail and safari crash after update to 10.4.10

I have recently installed the update to Tiger (OSX 10.4.10) and ever since I have installed the update I have a problem with both Mail and Safari. In Safari the browser just closes (no dialog pops up, it's as if I'd just quit it). This doesn't have a particular point when it closes, it could be after as little as 5 seconds, or as much as an hour or so.
Safari does something similar however it is only when I click "New" or Forward/Reply, to create a new email, it just closes. It recieves and opens emails normally.
I don't know what I can do, so far I've had no luck finding anyone else with this problem. However I need my email for work, so it's getting quite a problem.
As a note using Fire-Fox I don't have any problems with programs closing, it is only these two programs.

Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of the problem already being there, or some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s “Important: Please read before installing” warnings, etc.
Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, if you’ve installed Safari 3 Beta, uninstall that first, then reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
If you installed the latest Security Update, you may need to reinstall that as well:
    Security Update 2007-006 (Universal)
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.
BTW, please update the Operating System field on your My Settings’s profile (and click Save), so that the version of Mac OS X you’re running now automatically appears in all your posts and not just in some of them.

  • Software update question for iTunes and Safari

    Preface -
I only use the software update in the Apple to check for new software, then download it manually and install it following all the directions so carefully specified here by many of you good folks.
So, first some the rhetorical questions - How much does SU check? Does it look at other Apple apps running at the same time? Does it check OS (it must!)? Does it look to see if what it suggests needs to be updated is compatible with what is there?)
    Background information -
I have Safari 3.2.3. Since Safari doesn't work for me and I never use it, I have not updated it. Several of you told me not to bother updating Safari since v4x probably wouldn't work if 3 doesn't (what doesn't work is I can't quit without force quitting and there appears to be no fix).
The latest SU tells me new versions of iTunes - 9.0.3 - and Safari - 4.0.4 - are available. I am running iTunes 7.7. According to the download page, iTunes 9 has to have Safari 4.
    The questions -
So, why does SU tell me updates for iT and Safari are available without specifying that I MUST do both updates and do them so that Safari 4 is in place before I update iTunes (or iTunes will die?) Note - I never visit the iTunes store; I just use iTunes to transfer to my iPod my own CDs which I've copied onto the computer in lossless.
Since, I never use Safari anyway, will it cause any difficulty if I DO do the update to 4 and just let it sit in a folder unused as 3.2.3 sits there doing nothing? OR does iTunes USE Safari to access the library of CD track info when it makes suggestions for labeling tracks on CDs I've downloaded to my library?
I hope this makes sense, I fear I am rambling on here...
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Mrs H

    Dear Kappy,
First of all, thank you for tackling my issue with Safari. I have to begin by saying it was intermittent, but Mr H and I have just stopped using Safari. I just tried it and it was fine - but I don't know how long that will last.
And, by the way, we have the same issue occasionally for all three of our Tiger Macs - I have reinstalled OS, done the combo reinstall - OS plus Safari (I believe that's the term - combo?; it's been a while and I can't remember exactly what I was instructed here to do - but I did it).
You probably won't want to read all of this, but since you have been so kind as to jump onboard my Safari issue, here are the links to the 2 _very long_ threads, (part one and two), describing my issues with Safari:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1986914&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2037950&tstart=0
    Plus the third installment:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2097007&tstart=0
Klaus1 was ever so patient and the final advice, I believe, was - just don't use Safari. It was a memory hog - using what looked like even more than 100% of memory - which made no sense - and it just wouldn't allow me to quit without force quitting. Everything else works just fine...or so it seems to me and has done so for ages (except that we've been gone for several months so I can't count that...)
Do you suggest doing this first?
    Kappy wrote:
My guess is you have corrupted preference or cache files. Perhaps clearing out cache files and deleting related preference files may fix the problem.
I'm sure I was instructed to do this and have done so, but I'll gladly do it again. How to delete pref file? and will they rebuild?
Then can I do this suggestion of "deleting the latter 2" mentioned below, without learning how to open a new account - I used to know, but have gone brain dead on this... - or should I do this too? And, deleting them - will they rebuild?
Possibly in the /Home/Library/Safari/ folder or a problem with the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist file or /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/ folder. Start by deleting the latter two.
Should someone move this discussion over to Safari?
Thank you again for offering your help here,
    Mrs H

  • Help please: Combo Security Update 2008-004 Ver.1 and Safari 3.1.2 update

hi, same issues as everyone else after downloading Combo Security Update 2008-004 Ver.1 and Safari 3.1.2 update, just hanging on blue "loading mac osx", no password screen comes up. i did not have an error like some others when downloading except at the end when it said my startup memory was low, i closed that screen and tried to reboot. that's where i meet everyone else's problem.
I DO NOT HAVE A TIGER START-UP DISK. (i bought my mac a year ago on ebay and the software was installed.
i need help from beginning to end because i am not very mac saavy. thank you. ~laura

The next step would be using the Install Disk to either change the Passwords, or do an Archive & Install if you had enough free space, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
But it looks like we'll have to take a chance on this, applesetupdone...

"OK, restart your computer, hold down Command-s and type in the following:
    /sbin/fsck -y Enter
    /sbin/mount -uaw Enter
    rm /var/db/.applesetupdone Enter
    1. The rm command is the remove command which deletes the file.
    2. Robert: I'd rename the file via: mv /var/db/.applesetupdone /var/db/.applesetupdone.old
    reboot Enter
Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!
    end of posted by: JoseAranda"
If we ever get it booted, we just Must Trash/move some files and empty the Trash!

  • Internet expoler and safari on 10.3.9

    hi,
i just have a qestion about browsers on my emac.
so when i was running os x 10.3.5 youtube worked great on safari. now that i have 10.3.9, as soon as i type in youtube.com safari closes! why does it do this? also how can i install flash on IE for mac? i get to the adobe site and click FLASH FOR OS X 10.3. than nothin hapens!!
    THANKS IN ADVANCE

I find IE has a hard time displaying almost any modern web page. It's been untouched for something like 4 years.
I find the Camino browser does very well. The last version that ran under OS 10.3.9 is Camino 1.6.10. It's here:
    http://caminobrowser.org/download/releases/1.6.10/
Are you asking about the iBook G3 in your profile or an eMac that this forum covers? Any eMac will run nicely with Tiger 10.4.11. Our oldest eMac is a "first-issue" 700mHz and does quite well with Camino, FireFox, and Safari after I upgraded it to 10.4 and bumped the RAM to 768MB.
If it's the iBook having trouble, you may wish to peruse the iBook G3 forums for suggestions from people with the same model as yours. That forum is here:

  • Crashing iApps and Safari

I posted this in the iPhoto and Safari boards and was directed here.
I crash in any Apple iApp, Safari, Installer, and other Apple apps.
It usually occurs when I click on the vertical or horizontal scroll bars. "Page up or down" buttons don't cause the crash. Sometimes clicking on the "Install" button when trying to install a program like 10.4.3 update also crashes.

I've tried repaing the disk with Tiger DVD Install, repairing permissions, zapping pram, couldn't install 10.4.3 update or install applejack (due to installer crashing), I've taken out non-Apple ram, disconnected all firewire and usb peripherals...
    HELP!

I am having the same problem with my G4 Duak 450. It runs 10.2.8 fine but with Tiger it just closes programs with out any warning. I have done the upgrade install and a fresh install. I have removed ram and tried new, now I am looking at the video card - ATI 128 - that came with the system. Any help would be great
