Tiger 104 Won't install on iBook G3

Hello All,
I recently tried a shim fix on my iBook which was successful. I then tried to install 10.4 onto the ibook, but it just isnt having it.
It gets to the Preparing installation screen and then freezes.
Is it because:
a) my CD/DVD Drive is busted or
b) I haven't got enough ram?
At the moment, I have 128Ram...
Thanks, I would appreciate any advice.
t1nym4c

Personally, I decided to leave my 800 MHz G3 iBook in Panther (even with its 640 MB of RAM). That is already one upgrade past what it came with. When I wanted to go to Tiger, I upgraded to an iBook G4. I am conservative about what I ask of my hardware, though.
Since you already have the 256 MB module and Tiger, why not try it? If it is not as good as you expected, you can go back down to Panther. I have never been a fan of any version of OS X prior to Panther.
Do you have the ability to backup your data? That is essential before upgrading.
You can find Gulliver's suggestions here:

However, I recommend SuperDuper! over Carbon Copy Cloner for cloning the hard drive.

  • Latest Tiger Updates Won't Install!

I reloaded OS 10.4 on my iMac G5 to resolve an ongoing, and unanswered -by Apple technical support- problem with my 'Internet Connect' applet not opening.
I successfully reformatted my hardrive with primary (132 GB) and secondary (11GB) partitions using the recommended journaled filing system.
When I tried to install the OS 10.4.7 Update, I got the MicroSoft-like cryptic message, 'You cannot install Mac OSX (PowerPC) Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.'
No corrective actions to '... meet the requirements' is provided, of course.
I also cannot update to OS X 10.4.3 . . . I get the same "Bill Gates Is Here To Serve You" message, sans the '(PowerPC)' notation. I CAN upgrade to OS X 10.4.1 but that appears to be it.
The technical notes associated with the two Updates state that they will update all Tiger OS's from 10.4 upwards.
Do I have to wait for Leopard this Spring?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.1)   1.5 GByte RAM, 17 Inch TFT

There are two ways to update to Mac OS X 10.4.7: Use Software Update or the standalone installer. You only need to use one of these methods to update your computer.
    Automatic Software Update
Software Update, located in the Apple menu, will automatically download the latest Apple software. (Software Update might have linked you to this article to learn more about the update.) Note that the update's size may vary from computer to computer when installed using Software Update. Some updates must be installed prior to others, soyou may need to run Software Update more than once to get all of the available updates.
    Standalone installer
Download the update installer and run it manually. This a useful option when you need to update multiple computers but only want to download the update once. Two versions of the standalone installer are available from Apple Downloads: a delta and combo.
The delta update installer (detailed in a different article) updates Mac OS X 10.4.6 to 10.4.7.
The combo update installer for PowerPC and Intel-based Macs (described here) updates Mac OS X 10.4, 10.4.1, 10.4.2, 10.4.3, 10.4.4, 10.4.5, or 10.4.6 to 10.4.7.
    Improvements
This update offers many improvements. For a list of some of them, see About the Mac OS X 10.4.7 Update (delta).

  • Tiger won't Install (iBook g4)

Hi, I have a iBook G4, currently running OS X 10.3.9. I purchased the retail version of Tiger, but I can't get it to install on my computer. It goes through the process until the "destination drive verification" at which point it stops and says there has been an error and tells me to try again. I've retried this several times, but it still won't install. Any advice? Thanks!!

    hi there redkat212 --
did you do disk repair beforehand?? if not, you should do so immediately. instructions are here. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214. after a few runs through the repair, it should say "no repairs necessary". after doing the utility, you should select the first drive icon (not macintosh hd, but the first one which gives it capacity) and check to see if something there says "smart status". it should hopefully say verified. keep me posted. • ITunes won't install on my OS 10.3. Will Tiger 10.4 run it?

My PowerMac G4 is running Panther 10.3.9. I have a 733 MHz processor. iTunes won't install nor can I view any videos. If I go to Youtube the system crashes. Some sites tell me I need a flashplayer upgrade, but it won't install. An Apple tech told me to upgrade to Leopard 10.5 and it would solve my problems. My understanding is that Leopard 10.5 needs 867MHz to run. If I upgrade to Tiger 10.4 will that solve any of my problems?

    Hello marwhi,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
Yes, OS 10.3.9 cannot run the latest iTunes 9. You will need at least Mac OS 10.4.11 and above to run it. Your problem with YouTube may just be with your browser if you are using Safari. For now you might want to try Camino 1.6.9 and see if you have any better luck. Camino 1.6.9 tends to be a slightly more updated version of browser than the last version of Safari that runs on 10.3.9 Panther. If you do upgrade to Tiger 10.4.11 though you would be able to use a more updated version of Safari which will "play" nicer with sites such as YouTube and Google etc.
Hardware and software system requirements for iTunes 9 can be found at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
And here are the "Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger System Requirements". You will need to purchase a "full retail" version of Tiger 10.4 install discs from a third party reseller such as on ebay etc. and the discs tend to sell for a premium these days. General idea of price can be seen by going to ebay and searching for "full retail 10.4 Tiger install" and then clicking on the "Completed Auctions" link in the left column. This should give your a good idea of what they tend to sell for on the resale market when available. Do not purchase machine specific or "upgrade" discs.

  • 10.4 won't install on g4 iBook.... because I'm stupid.

I bought a little 12" g4 iBook to give away. I have one just like it. The one I just bought came with 10.3.7. My other g4 is running 10.4.11. I have the iBook g4 start up disks, so I thought... "Hey! I'll make this new one 10.4, as well!" But (and here's where I think I screwed up) I made it a "clean install". And now, it won't install, at all. The "checking installation DVD" part comes out clean. It even seems to be installing certain things and writing receipts. Then, I keep getting a "could not be installed... restart?" message. ...sigh... Was it the clean install? I thought 10.4 was an entirely new OS, not just an upgrade. Do I need to go buy some software that I can clean-install, to fix this? Right now, the new g4 can only start up on the installation disks because Genius, here, erased the volume. Somebody hit me.

    Hey gb,
The "checking installation DVD" part comes out clean. It even seems to be installing certain things and writing receipts. Then, I keep getting a "could not be installed... restart?" message. ...sigh... Was it the clean install?
Is that a retail installer you're using?
I thought 10.4 was an entirely new OS, not just an upgrade
Well if it was 10.4.2 retail installer you would have been able to use it to upgrade 10.3.9.
I use a "standard" known good external DVD drive to do all my installs. It saves headaches with questionable drives.
I have one just like it. The one I just bought came with 10.3.7. My other g4 is running 10.4.11.
    So try using target mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
First hook the two iBooks together with a FireWire cable.
Then start the iBook running 10.4.11 in target mode.
Then start the new iBook up. You might need to use the option key to select the 10.4.11 OS. You might also need to zap the pram and vram.
If that works reverse the host computer and use SuperDuper to clone the OS in your iBook over the new iBook.

  • Tiger Won't Install On G4 4 450 AGP

Removed all extra PCI cards and RAM to the stock machine and 10.4 still won't install.
It starts the set up and then when it gets to chosing the hard drive it locks up and won't install.
    Any solutions are appreciated.
    Thanks

On my fourth try, I got Tiger to install on my G4 AGP 350.
Here's what I did, following advice from these forums and from Apple Support:
Ensure Tiger is only installing to one unpartioned volume.
(I re-initialized my second internal hard drive to be unpartioned.)
    Run DiskWarrior on that volume.
Unplug all peripherals except keyboard and mouse. No Firewire or USB or SCSI devices were plugged in during installation of Tiger.
Remove all PCI cards I added myself (a SCSI card).
I left all the RAM in place, even though it was largely added by me and not factory original.
Restart with the install DVD in the internal DVD drive while holding down the "c" key on the keyboard.
Select "Basic Install" (apart from selecting the volume, don't do any custom installing, let all the printer drivers etc be installed--Apple said I could delete them later).
A little over an hour later, the monitor was dark and the green power light was pulsing... OS X was working!
OS X asked about my keyboard (it's a marvellous Macally full-size keyboard--the power button still shuts down OS X Tiger) and then completed its install.
I installed a security update and maybe (since it was mentioned elsewhere in these forums) that update removed some desktop icons in my OS 9.2.2 volume (most of the icons had disappeared when I rebooted into 9.2.2 from the other internal hard drive, using Control Panel--Startup Disk).
In Tiger, I proceeded to customize the Dock, run Dashboard, run Safari, run Slideshow, run Quicktime Player 7, run Preview, and do things I normally need to go into Photoshop to do (create custom icons for things that I've put in the Dock).
So thanks to all the wise elders who helped me!

    Hi David,
What's the problem here??? When I download Safari 2.0.1 -- which it says is the latest version, it won't install on my Powerbook, which is running 10.9.4-- says the latest it will run on is 10.4.2. Why hasn't Apple updated Safari to run on the newest versions??
The latest version of Safari for os 10.4.9 is 2.0.4
    http://developer.apple.com/internet/safari/uamatrix.html ( link brought
to light by yeas, Andyball_uk, thanks Andy most helpful!! )
You can use Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4if you have your Tiger disks.
Scroll down to see the Optional Installs icon.
You need to then run the combo OSX update afterwards to bring Safari up to date.
Alternately, andyball-uk has generously uploaded a Safari app you can download from here,
Click the "free" option to download it. Unzip the file, place the safari app in your applications folder, then run disk permissions repair, using Disk Utility.
    Hope this helps.

  • Tiger won't install on macbook

I recentlly purchased a Macbook MA252 1.83GHz 2GB 320GB. It came without an operating system. I tried to install Snow Lepord but it said I needed Lepord first. So I then tried to install Tiger but when I put the disk in it does nothing. I'm assuming that the computer doesn't support the newer version of Tiger & I have to install Lepord. The Tiger disk isn't the gray disk but the black one. Any help would be great.

The Mac OS X Server 10.4 Universal Binary will run on early Intel Macs and is available to the public, and every Intel Mac that was publicly available and has at least 2GB of RAM supports Snow Leopard or Lion.

  • Ibooks app won't install

When I click install on my apps ibooks starts & then reverts to "install". When I try to sink to my ipod touch & I get message ibooks is not downloaded...

    Hey there Sahdvi,
It sounds like you are wanting to install the iBooks app, but when you try it does not install. I would start by quitting all the running apps on your iPod Touch with:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that and restart the phone and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • Panther to Tiger DVD won't restart on external DVD drive, G4 tower!

I purchased the DVD Tiger upgrade last year! My tower does not have a dvd drive so I finally purchased an external LG Super drive to upgrade my system from 10.3 to Tiger. It plugs in into a USB Port with an additional USB port when you need extra power(don't know if this is the problem it also will not burn a dvd, using toast lite, but will load one). The dvd loads and is visual on my screen but it will not get past the restart screen. Says it can not retart using the dvd drive. I have attempted to hold down the "c" key, the control key and change the start up disk option in the preferences to the 10.5 system which is visual in my start up screen as well as my 10.3 system. Processor speed and ram should be fine according to Apple when I purchased it. Nothing works!
(error message)attempts to install the 10.4 OS results in a msg "you cannot install Mac OSX on this volume. Mac OSX cannot start up from this volume."
    Any advise is welcome.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are reasons why Mac OS X won't install on your volume:
    1. If you are using a PCI PowerMac G4, versus an AGP PowerMac G4, it won't support an external DVD drive for booting via Firewire. See this article to determine if that's the case:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3082?viewlocale=en_US
    2. If you are using an Update or DropIn labelled DVD. These can only be used on PowerMac G5s, iMac G4s, Powerbook G4s, iBook G4s, that were released between April 6th 2005, and April 29th, 2005.
Your profile says you are using a PowerMac G4, so we can only assume you are not using one of the above models which can use the disc.
    3. If you are using a gray disc that is labeled some other Mac model than one of the above models, those will not work with a PowerMac G4.
    4. If your disc looks like * and does not say Update, DropIn, or OEM on it, try using the startup manager instead to boot the disc:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27043?viewlocale=en_US
Select the disc instead of following step 3 in the above article:
    3. Click the Apple Hardware Test volume in the startup manager.
and continue to follow the steps. Sometimes the 'C' key doesn't work.
    5. You don't have at least 256 MB of RAM installed. See my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html

  • How do i install the ibooks free app?

how do i install the ibooks free app?

By 'desktop' do you mean your iPad's homescreen or a desktop computer ?
If your iPad then try closing the App Store app via the taskbar and see if it works when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the App Store app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the AppStore app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
Whether you will be able to install the app will depend upon what version of iOS that you have on your iPad (Settings > General > About > Version) - the version of iBooks that is in the store needs iOS 5+

    Hi,
I've recently bought a palm TX, and have been experiencing trouble  with the included software apps for my mac.
I've installed palm desktop, and some of the other apps such as adobe reader, but for some reason docs to go won't install.
i can load the disk image off the CD, click on the VISE installer icon, accept the terms of use, but it get's stuck when the progress bar appears.  the last thing it says before "not responding" is...
    items to install 240
    "searching  [computer name]"
    or something along those lines
I've tried repairing disk permissions, i'm logged in on the admin account, reinstalled palm desktop and there are no other apps running.
I'm using OSX 10.4.11 (tiger), a palm TX, and the palm desktop version is 4.2.2
I've also tried downloading 4.2.1 rev D but same result.
    please help!

    Thanks for your reply,
The version included on the CD is Docs to go ver 7.  According to the datavis website, it's mac compatible, and it certainly looks like a mac compatible installation procedure.
I've found getting technical help from datavis pretty much impossible, as i need a registration no. to e-mail for support, and as I can't even install the program, I've got no registration no.
Is there anyone else out there with a TX using docs to go on their mac???

Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out, I just
purchased a G5 iMac to replace my aging dell desktop,
and now i'm more or less completely os x dependant
(I've had an ibook for a few months now). Anyway, I
    have a few questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a (free) mail notifier tool,
that will alert me when I recieve new pop3 mail? I
used to use AIM for this in windows
The built in email program does sound an alert for new messages.
    2. Anyone know of a good (free, again) IRC client?
    iChat works well.
    3. I noticed earlier that my screen was flickering,
it seems to have subsided for now, but is that normal
to encounter in a new display? It wasn't really bad
flicker, but I could see it.
    No idea.
    4. I leave my desktops on 24/7x365, will that be a
problem with this iMac? Display shuts off of course
    after 30 mins
You could set the iMac to go to sleep after non use. My Macs are
always sleeping when not in use, waking them up takes seconds.
Unlike windoze, never knew if it would be locked up or not.
    5. Should I get the extended warranty? I'm usually
against them, but I am expecting this computer to
last me at least 3 years (for $1300 it better!)
before I upgrade, as I got that much out of a Dell
and from what I understand, Mac's do not age nearly
    as fast as Windows pc's.
It is well worth the cost. Never know what might happen. Also
it is good insurance for future upgrades. I traded in my G4 tower
purchased two years ago for 75% of what I paid for it. Apple care
transfers, giving the buyer the remainder of your warranty.
    Thank you for any help,
    -Evan

  • QuickTime Won't Install, Can't Find Newer Version OSX 10.4.11

When QuickTime 7.6 released, the update caused problems on my Mac PPC G5 (OSX Tiger 10.4.11). I deleted it. I attempted to reinstall an older version of QT that I knew functioned. This was over a year ago. It didn't work. As it was not urgent, I forgot about it.
Now, there is software I want to use that relies on QT being installed.
Running into the same problem with the installation. It's a Catch-22 situation.
*The QT 7.5.5 Installer won't install because "a newer version is already installed".*
*However, attempts to run ANY software or movie or whatnot that uses QT tells me the opposite, that QT is NOT installed.*
I have searched the computer's furthest corners trying to dig out components and packages and it STILL insists QT is installed. I've searched on every possible variation of QuickTime, Quicktime, quicktime, qt, you name it. NOTHING.
What am I missing? How do I get this to work? I've no intention of upgrading to Leopard just yet.
    Thanks in advance.

    What am I missing?
As far as I know, the installing software still checks the "Library > Receipts" folder to read a history of which package updates have been installed rather than searching to see if the actual app is installed. Have you deleted the receipt ".pkg" files equal to or newer than the one you currently wish to install. However, remember this approach assumes that any "patches" applied in the ordinary upgrade process will not create a conflict within the embedded QT structure when reinstalling an older version--which may or may not be true here. (I.e., QT is no longer an independent application or software package but rather an integrated part of the operating system.) The safest approach is to re-install an older version of the entire OS and upgrade the system as it was meant to be updated to the level at which you wish to operate.
