Tiger and Panther same Mac???

Hi everyone!
I don't know if this is the right forum for this but is it possible to run 2 different versions of OS X on the same Mac and if so how would you do it?
Thanks!
Reg

Hi again Allan...
Just one more question...if I wanted to partition my Powerbook exactly how would I go through the process of backing up my existing info and reloading it? I mean I know I need an external drive big enough...but can I do it where I can just back up my drive and reload all from my backup? Or must I reload all my apps individually again? Basically what I'm getting at is if I can back up my whole volume (which is currently only one) and then partition and then reload my entire volume onto the partition of choice that wouldn't be too difficult except just the time of transferring. But if I must reload all my apps from disk then just load from my backup documents, etc. that would be a lot of work...does that make sense?
Thanks again...Reg

  • Freezing in Leopard, Tiger and Panther

Hi, I'm pretty new to Macs, so excuse any of my possible ignorance. I searched in the forum, but could not find any topic specifically answering my question.
I have an old eMac (1.25 ghz, 768 mb ram) I purchased from a friend. Upon my first plug in, I decided to upgrade to Leopard 10.5.4 (He was running a previous version of Tiger). After installing it, I found that it kept freezing after start up. At first I thought that it was related to running too much stuff at once, until it crashed on the desktop with no applications running. This freezing occurs anywhere from a minute to almost an hour *if I'm lucky* after startup.
Anyway, I decided that maybe I should run a clean install on Leopard. After all, I didn't really care about any of the stuff on my friend's hard drive. But no. That didn't solve anything. I then proceeded to go to my disk utility and repair the disk and the permissions. THAT didn't solve it, either.
Finally I figured, "OK, maybe my version of Leopard is just corrupt". I did a clean install and reverted to Tiger. For about five minutes, I was happy...until it froze once again. So then I was like, "Screw it, I'll just try Panther". Nope. It seemed to freeze more and more the more I downgraded.
I'm using Leopard once again for a bit, simply because it seems to freeze the least there. I know this is the Tiger forum, but can anyone here help me with my problem? Please?!

    Hello,
I have been having some freezing issues the past few weeks on my G5 tower. It happened after the last major update, even had a few kernel panics. I searched around the forums here and found the easiest fix for me which was running AppleJack http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/07/beijing2008_preparationsthre.html
If you follow the instructions very closely you might get some relief. I ran it yesterday afternoon and so far, (keeping fingers crossed) no problems.
I know we have differing equipment, but AppleJack will work with many Mac OS X versions.
You have to completely shut down, then roboot holding down the 'command' and 's' keys after the first chime upon boot. When screen is up, then type in 'applejack auto restart' - it starts to clean up your system and checks and repairs disks. (will automatically restart computer after fixing all) Best to read all the directions before trying.
Good luck. Let us know if it works.
    ps, i'm running Tiger, 10.4.11

  • Tiger and Panther installation error

Hi,Im new to this forum, nice to meet you all
i really hope that my problem can solve it here..
Since a week a go, my Mac was on panther10.3 had some software crashs, so i decided to re-install my OS from an 10.3 installation disk which came belong my G5, but each time it just pop up a window said"there were error during install the software, please restart and try again"
and i keep running the installation again, but it keep pop up the error, then i read some thread here and leart to run fysk test,PVRAM reset and finally I errase all my hardisk files, but it still stay the same...
then yesterday i ran to puchase OSX tiger...but it didn't solve me any problem,it was still error while installing, i read some thread said it may cause by 3rd-party ram, but it should not the problem, cause i didn't add any in it, then i ran the AHT test from my 10.3 disk, it said there was error on my memory part, and i assume it is my ram problem.....
    its really frustrate me...
is that mean that my ram is over?
do i need to buy new ram?
or is there any things I can reset my ram?
    what should i do now?
Thank you for your kindly help.......
    My Mac spec:
    G5 powermac Dual 1.8g
    512ram
    DVD-rw
    160G hard disk
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Hi HKBU;
Before I can answer the question about fixing it, you will have to tell me more about your system like how much RAM do you have and how many memory cards are installed.
If you have additional memory cards you might be able to remove some and then run AHT again to see if the error is gone.
If all you have is the original memory, you will have to run either memtest or rember which will return an error message pointing to the bad memory card.

  • Tiger and Panther

I know some/many are delighted that Mac users can now run windows. Unless I've misunderstood this new ability is only on the Intel models . Knowing that Apple plans to be using only Intel CPU's by years end, I'm very concerned that those of us running the "older models (I just bought a G5) aren't going to be left in the dust when Panther is released.
There's a few programs which are not available in Mac format that I'd like to be able to run. I use my G5 primarily for audio (home recording) - I know there's emulators, butI'm cncerned about transfer rates which is very important in computer recording.
Anybody heard whether Apple will or won't forget the rest of us?

Leopard is the next OS version. Panther preceeded Tiger. I wouldn't be too concerned. Every available app runs in Tiger, including Windows under an emulator. Future app updates should continue to work.
There's a few programs which are not available in Mac format that I'd like to be able to run. Such as? If those currently run under Windows, then you can also use them on your machine. As for transfer rates, I wouldn't know, and leave that for others to answer.

  • Safari won't activate after Tiger and Panther re-install

I wanted to upgrade from Panther 10.3.9 on my Powerbook G4 667/40GB 15 inch to Tiger 10.4.6 from a blackbox CD. It said install successful but when I restarted, the boot was slow and it ended up frozen with a blank blue screen, no desktop icons or dock, and just a Spotlight icon in the upper left, spinning wheel on rollover.
So I re-installed Panther 10.3.2. It corrupted my Quark activation so that is now an issue, too. But I could not get Safari to open. The GetInfo says Ver. 2.03 but I don't think that's the right version that came with 10.3.2. I am now trying to download 10.3.9 Combo see if that would work.
    Any help out there?

    Hello macyue:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I am not being critical, but your post is a good advertisement for having a good backup/retreat strategy before software changes.
Given the steps you have documented, there is really no way to determine what happened when to your system.
Did you use the full retail version of OS X when you attempted to upgrade? Did you use the migration feature?
Where do you want to wind up?
    Barry
P.S. Your problems are much greater than a Safari issue.

  • Converting from Tiger and Panther to Leopard

I'm a relatively new Mac user and I am very impressed with what I saw in the Leopard. Because I have not had to deal with the upgrade process I do not know what I need to do for my machine. Can anyone help me out or pass on some hints and techniques possibly used when converting OS 9 to OSX?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Given the age of the iMac (Flat Panel) we cannot be sure that Apple will support Leopard on them. (As a new Mac user I suspect you actually have an Intel iMac and not an iMac (Flat Panel)).
However there is literally nothing to upgrading between versions of OS X; your Mac will do it all for you. Just insert the DVD and click "Upgrade". I would advise taking a good backup before hand just in case.
Moving between OS 9 and OS X was slightly more convoluted because Apple completely changed the OS and OS 9 software did not work natively under OS X, firmware had to be updated etc. Such architectural changes are not been made this time. The move from 10.4 to 10.5 will be very very easy.

  • Website issues with tiger and maybe all mac os.

I frequently use a website at work called GM Dealerworld. I find this to be not very compatible with mac os. I have used macs all my life and do not want to install windows on my macbook. The problem in Safari is that some portions of the site. Most importantly "one source" which is what we use to respond to internet sales leads will not load at all. In Firefox it will load but you cannot click on any of the links. On other portions of the site where you have to access drop down windows you can access one but the option never appears to access the next one.
I have tried to contact GM Dealerworld about this problem and they just tell me that they have no support for the Mac OS.
If anyone can help me solve this problem without having to install windows I would really appreciate it!

Obviously the site uses Windows' specific support that is not compatible with third-party browsers nor with Safari. If the website programmers are unwilling to fix their site then there's not much you can do about it.
There aren't too many sites like that, but those that exist usually are designed and maintained by programmers who are not familiar with the use of other browsers and ignore the use of Windows elements that are not compatible. It's lazy and ignorant programming, but there's not much you can do about it.
You could try upgrading to Leopard on the off chance that the upgraded Java and other web support may help, but I wouldn't count on it. I would certainly try accessing the site from a Leopard machine to see. I would also consider trying the latest 3.0 Beta of Firefox.

  • Can I run Tiger and Leopard on the same computer

    Hi folks.
I've been meaning to install Leopard for ages but have never got round to it (I bought the retail box when it first came out). I have upgraded my RAM to 2GB and my hard drive to 320GB with no problems.
My upgraded hard drive has been partitioned into 2 equal parts of 160GB. These appear on desktop as Mackintosh HD1 and HD2. HD1 is the disk with all my files, music, OS etc and HD2 is empty
I have 2 bootable clones of my present system - one is on a 160GB external and the other is the original 80GB HD that I replaced.
My question is this - can I install Leopard on to my 160GB external HD, then clone it on to the empty HD2. If I do this would I be able to run both Tiger and Leopard on the same Macbook?
Is there any problems with this plan? Would I be able to transfer between the 2 OS and how do I install Leopard on the external drive. Is it just a case of inserting the Leopard DVD and choose the external drive as the target?
    As usual thanks in advance
    Del

    # Original Tiger in the internal HD, New Leopard in the external HD.
    # New Leopard in the internal, Legacy cloned Tiger in the external.
    # Split internal, one partition with Tiger, another with Leopard.
Leopard is backwardly compatible with older Macs, just make sure yours fulfills the minimum system requirements, both use the same filesystem format, so each can see the other. You can't run both at the same time, unless you purchase the server version of Leopard and run it virtualized. 99.9% of Firewire external HD's are bootable, some USB's are bootable but have to test first. You can choose which system to boot from by pressing the Option key at boot time, before the chime. Just make sure the external HDD is plugged in and turned on if that's where you want to boot from.
When I migrated my PBG4 from Panther to Tiger, got an external FW HDD, cloned Panther onto it, upgraded using Archive and Install, cleaned up, customized and tested it. When I was satisfied all was ok, cloned the original Panther onto another partition of the external HDD, wiped and tested for failure the internal HDD, then cloned the known good and tested Tiger into it. Only thing that died along the way was my old and ancient Photoshop v2.x, that refused to run on Tiger.

  • Mac OS X Tiger or Panther with wifi on a Wallstreet G3 Powerbook

    I have a G3 Wallstreet Powerbook with
    7Gb hard disk
    192Mb RAM
    400 MHz processor
    PCMCIA slot for card modem
    CD ROM only drive
    OS 9.2
I would like to try and put OS X Tiger on this machine and then put some sort of wi-fi card in it so that I can connect it to a wifi broadband router.
1 Will OS X Tiger work OK on this machine? Or would Panther (10.3.9) work better? I would prefer to install Tiger to Panther. Or would either or both just run SO slowly on this G3, that it just isn't worth it?
2 If one or the other will work, what wifi card should I get for the Wallstreet, and will this go in the PCMCIA slot, or deeper inside the powerbook somewhere? Can someone recommend an inexpensive card that works well?
3 If neither Tiger nor Panther will work, would it be possible to get a wifi card that will work with OS 9.2? Again, could someone recommend a card that works well with OS 9.2?
I have read somewhere that it may be necessary to install XPostFacto before installing OS X.
It would be helpful to know what of the above is possible and what not, and obtain clear step-by-step instructions from someone who understands the options far better than I do for the order I should do everything in. I don't wish to start spending money on the whole process, only to find further down the line that I can't achieve the end result ie using OS X and a wi-fi card.
The background is that I have a g5 iMac which will continue to be my computer of choice, but when I travel an up-to-date-as-possible G3 would be helpful.
    Thanks, Nick
    G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Panther requires built-in USB ports and Tiger requires both built-in USB and Firewire ports. The Wallstreet has neither. The installers will refuse to install on the computer.
You can use a freeware utility called XPostFacto to install Panther (don't know about Tiger) but how well it will work (or if it will even install) would be experimental at best. The Wallstreet lacks the horsepower for OS X.

  • Can't connect iMac/Leopard with Mac Mini/Tiger and vice versa

This one has got me tearing my hair out.
I have an Intel iMac running Leopard and a Mac Mini running Tiger on the same Ethernet network. Both run (adjacent) fixed IP addresses with common subnet mask and gateway. Both access the Internet fine through a single router. But can I share files between the two?
Neither has firewall turned on while file sharing is enabled. I can see each Mac from the other but when I try connecting first I get 'The server may not exist or is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again.' Then on clicking OK I get 'This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally.'
If I try connecting from Finder using Go - Connect To Server I get this error message 'The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "afp://MacMininame" could not be read or written.'
Although I'm running Leopard on the iMac now, this also used to happen when I ran Tiger too.
    Many thanks - GeoffT.

    Fixed it!
I have Parallels installed on the iMac and it creates two virtual network adapters (Guest-Host and NAT) in System Preferences/Network. For some reason I'd foolishly contrived to manually configure the Nat adapter to the same IP address as the Mac Mini, hence the point-back to the iMac every time.
Guess we're all allowed the occasional foul up.....

  • Can you run Tiger and OS 8.6 on the same computer? RE: Repair Permissions

    Hello,
I don't fully understand how "Repair Permissions" work and when it is needed and therefore I would like to post this question for some clarification. Using "Repair Permissions" for troubleshooting is a controversial issue. I read this interesting opinion about Repairing Permissions and now I am concerned that it may not be safe for me to install my old OS 8.6 on my OSX installed computer due to a "permission" conflict between OS 8 and OS X.
Could someone confirm this with me please? Could this cause some file permission problems?
I would use OS 8.6 to run my older Adobe Illustrator 8 application and photoshop 6. And then I will boot onto Tiger for everything else. I would switch a few times per day back and forth.
Basically, is it safe to run Tiger on the same computer that has OS 8.6 installed on it? (I am not concerned about making 8.6 run in the Classic environment because I know that doesn't work - I am refering to having separate bootable installs)
    [1] http://www.unsanity.org/archives/000410.php
PS I am aware of how to change my startup OS on this particular computer (b&w G3). I would have to have the two OSs on the same volume and launch X by pressing x -key during startup due to the fact that OS 8.6 doesn't have the Startup Disk feature introduced in OS 9. That was an earlier separate discussion that has since been solved.
    PS
I could choose to instead use my OS 9.2 but I have reserved that OS for another computer unfortunately. However depending on the outcome of this post, I might have to reconsider.

This is a really difficult issue to resolve! Apple doesn't have much documentation that covers running OS 8 & OS X on the same drive. There are, however, a few things that it might helpful to know:
    1. Repairing permissions with Disk Utility in OS X won't touch user-created files. It only repairs things that have a receipt file, which are created by installers. The unsanity reference explains this; you might want to review that part of the article again.
    2. Disk Utility has a separate repair OS 9 permissions function (accessed in the menus), but AFAIK, this only repairs permissions on the OS 9 system folder "blessed" by the Classic system pref as the one to use for Classic. I doubt this would be useful for the OS 8.6 system.
    3. Of greater concern than mis-set permissions is file system damage. Under no circumstances should you use any disk repair utility on a Tiger drive except those that "know" about Tiger's file structure. This rules out using Disk First Aid from either OS 8 or OS 9, or any OS 8 or 9 third party utilities. (See this Apple document for the details.) I don't know if this also applies to OS 8's 'rebuild desktop' function, but I would avoid it to be on the safe side.
    4. If you do decide to reformat or partition your drive for dual booting (as you mentioned in your other thread), do so only with Tiger's Disk Utility & remember to check the 'install OS 9 drivers' option or you won't be able to boot into OS 8 or 9, even if you have a viable system folder for either on the drive. See this Apple document for more info.
    5. In light of the above, it is well worth getting OS 9 to use with Tiger on your B&W, as long as any older apps you need to run are compatible with it. (There should be no need to use OS 8/9 with text files anyway, since OS X can handle all the old text formats.) In fact, unless you need to use some peripheral that has no OS X driver, you probably will do just fine by using Classic with the old apps, eliminating the need to reboot completely.
    6. If you need to buy OS 9, one inexpensive source is OWC's Mac OS 9.1 - OEM CD. At $35, it is a cheap way to avoid the headaches of OS 8 with Tiger! Note that you can upgrade from this 9.1 version to 9.2.2 for free with Apple's updates available from the Mac OS 9: Available Updates web page.

  • Mac-mini, Tiger, and OS9

I currently am running a G3/350 (blue and white) and want to upgrade to a Mac Mini (this will be a secondary computer - main one is an iMac G5). The problem is that the Apple store says the new Mini's ship with Tiger only. I have some software that runs only on OS9 that can't be upgraded to OSX.
So, if I get the Mini, can I load OS9 from Panther undeneath Tiger and continue running my exisitng software?

Personally, I have never encountered a machine specific copy of OS X.
The new line of iBook G4s are shipping with a machine-specific version of Mac OS X 10.4.2 (build 8D37). Another copy of Mac OS X 10.4.2 (the retail version is build 8C46) from any other computer will not boot them.
New (legal) copies of OS 9 can still be had all over the web.
Why would anyone need to get another copy of Mac OS 9 besides the copy that came with their computer? Every computer that Apple makes is still shipping with a copy of Mac OS 9. I suppose, if you've lost your original install disk(s), then you might need to do a search. AppleCare Support can get you a replacement set. If your Mac is out of warranty, you may be charged though.
If your computer shipped with a copy of Mac OS X up to version 10.1.5, your computer would have come with a separate Mac OS 9 install CD. These installs are almost all machine-specific.
If your computer shipped with Mac OS X 10.2 or later, you will have to install Mac OS 9 for "Classic" support from your install/restore disks whether or nor you computer can actually boot into OS 9.
The Mac mini and all the other Macs currently being shipped do not come with Mac OS 9 for Classic support installed by default. However, you can install it from your install/restore DVD.

  • Tiger and Leopard on the Same MacBook?

I have a MacBook and would like to have both Tiger and Leopard on it. I Googled and found info that did not work for my "newer" machine. I purchased two months ago. I have a number of files that are Tiger only and will not be rewritten for Leopard. Can anyone offer a possibility of doing this for the newer machines!?!?!

To boot two different OS X versions, you need to have each version installed on a different bootable Volume. This can be on different partitions on the same drive, or on different drives, i.e. the internal and an external FW drive.
(Mac OS X and OS 9 can be on the same partition or drive for the older OS 9 bootable machines)
This is very useful when upgrading a Mac to a new OS, then you can perform the installation on a new drive and keep your old drive in tact, allowing you to boot the old and new OS version and access files from both drives.
However, when a Mac ships with a particular OS version, most of the time you can not downgrade to an older OS version.

  • Running Snow Leopard & Tiger on same Mac unit

How can I install both Tiger AND Snow Leopard on the same Intel Mac, and have the choice to choose either OS at start up to work with?

You would have to partition your hard drive into at least 2 partitions, then install Tiger on one partition and Snow Leopard on the other. When you boot you will have to hold down the Option key to have your Mac allow you to choose which partition to boot from.
Alternatively, you could install the second OS version on an external FW drive. But the drive would have to be connected & powered on before you start up your Mac in order to be able to choose it for startup.
Note: You should not, and in most cases cannot, install an earlier version of OS X than what came with your Mac. So, if your Intel Mac came with Leopard or Snow Leopard on it, you probably won't be able to install Tiger on it.
Why do you want to do this?

  • Running Leopard and Tiger at the same time VMWare fusion/Parallels?

    Hello,
I was wondering, is it possible to run Tiger and Leopard at the same time? Some older applications won't run properly in Leopard. The iMac came both with Tiger and Leopard (last November). It has been described elsewhere that one can install Tiger and Leopard on separate partitions and switch by rebooting. But it would be nice if one could run Tiger in Leopard like one can run Windows/Unix using VMWare Fusion or Parallels. Is that feasible?
    best wishes

I agree with you that virtualizing Mac OS X would be great. I'm an Apple technician and it would really help with my work. But Apple's EULA does not permit the use of OS X in a VM. They changed OS X Server's EULA recently to permit it, but not the "client version".
So your Mac can virtualize nearly any OS out there, but not OS X. And I believe (not sure) that a VM of OS X Server will only run on OS X Server.
