Tiger and PostScript printing

Next week I am getting my G5 Dual Core. Currently I am working with my good old Beige G3, still with good old OS 9.2...
As a graphic designer, I am questioning Tiger's ability to print PostScript on my (good old) HP DeskJet 1220C. Up till now I've been using Adobe's PostScript interpreter, PressReady, which would launch automatcally whenever I sent a QuarkXpress document to my 1220.
But PressReady has not been upgraded for years, and is no longer supported by Adobe.
Yes, I know, there is a way to keep working with my 1220 by creating a PDF file of the Quark file, and send it to the printer... WELL, THAT'S NOT AN EFFICIENT, ELEGANT WAY TO WORK, IN M HUMBLE OPINION... There MUST be a more direct way to solve this.
I am a bit confused and overwhelmed, reading all kinds of names like CUPS, GhostScript, and GIMP... Are those Print drivers that I would be able to use instead of my (good old) PressReady?? And if yes, where do I get one?

Thanks, Greg....
When checking my printer, DeskJet 1220C on the list of Tiger's included print drivers and PostScript PPD files --- it lists the driver as Gimp-Print , version 5.0.0-beta2 and "Modern Driver" is checked...
Is that what you refer to when you mentioned GhostScript?
Also, have you had experience with (or knowledge about) specifically printing a QuarkXpress file to a non-PostScript printer?
I am checking, 'cause the response I got from Quark, when investigating printing a Quark file to my 1220 under Tiger, was "create a PDF first and then send it to print"... Which to me sounds inefficient and cumbersome, not acceptable really...

  • MacBook, AppleTalk and PostScript printer

I can't print to my PostScript printer from my MacBook any more because AppleTalk has been disabled. When I go to the Network panel in System Preferences to turn it back on, I keep getting a drop-down message window saying 'Your network settings have been changed by another application'. I can click 'OK' to make the message go away but it just comes straight back. By strategically clicking in between re-appearances of this message I can navigate to the AppleTalk tab but I can't click on 'Make AppleTalk active', it just keeps switching back to the AirPort pane every time I try. Internet access via wireless router is fine but I would like to be able to print again from here.
The set up is a 12-in Intel dual core MacBook running 10.4.11, connecting via AirPort to a Belkin ADSL router, LaserJet 6MP printer connected to the router via Ethernet and an Asante Ethernet-to-LocalTalk adapter that works fine with my desktop Mac running 10.5 and two older iBooks on 10.3 and 10.4 (and used to be fine with this laptop too). The problem arose after using the laptop with another wireless network - my brother took it out of range and then was unable to reacquire the signal. He then ran some kind of network configuration utility without asking me (he doesn't know what it was, he's not Mac literate but presumably it was something that the Mac suggested) and ever since I've had this AppleTalk problem.
FWIW I've tried to create a new network location using the Network Setup Assistant and that just seems to get stuck at the 'configuring' stage.
    All suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi
Quit out of all applications and issue this command in Terminal:
    sudo rm -R -v -i /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
When prompted key yes to all the entries. Follow this with this command:
    sudo reboot now
On successful login enter the Network Preferences Pane and reapply and desired settings. Before running the above commands make a not of any bespoke network settings you may want after the restart.

  • Print Jobs Stop -- First w Panther, Now w Tiger and New Printer!

I was dealing with multiple problems, so I'm not sure where to start. I was using a G4 with Panther when, among other things, I could no longer print because anytime I sent something to the printer the job would stop. Trying to start it again didn't work. My hard drive crapped out (separate issue I now realize) and I had it replaced w/ a new hard drive installed with Tiger & also purchased a new printer. I installed the new printer (for now I have it connected directly via USB) and to my surprise and chagrin I still can't print for the same reason! The job stops immediately after I send the document to print. Trying to re-start, or deleting and printing again, etc. does nothing. I've been through all the troubleshooting tips on the support page and am at wit's end. The problem doesn't seem to be specific to an application, an OS, or the printer. The Mac guy who set up my new hard drive did save as much as possible from the old one & migrated it to the new. He must have transferred the glitch, but what could it be? Please help.

    Thanks a lot Greg.
I had problems printing to shared printer which was connected to my mac downstairs from my powerbook over airport. Kept on coming up as printer stopped. I turned all off and on, reinstalled drivers, deleted printers, and nothing worked 'till I found your tip.
I love the mac community, keep up the good work.

  • I installed Tiger and now my printer/scanner won't work

Hi. I installed Tiger and now my multi function printer/scanner/fax is not recognized by my computer. I have the Brother MFC 420 CN. I downloaded some drivers and such which I thought would resolve the issue, but still it does not work. What can I do? Thank you.

    According to this page:
    http://www.brother.com/E-ftp/macosxstate.htm
The MFC-420 CN is not listed. Sounds like you have a printer whose driver never was updated. Contact Brother technical support and ask them to fix that issue.

  • Postscript Printer and PDF

    hi,
We have a kyocera printer and want to use ADS. The ADS works fine. FP_TEST_00 shows no error.
It seems to be alright when i preview the PDF. But the printout shows only code.
    It´s like this:
    %!PS-Adobe
    save
    % simple drawing functions
    /edge {/y2 exch def /x2 exch def /y1 exch def /x1 exch def .......
    ...........etc.
I found this entry at the SAP library
    https://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/bb/db03b04a3011d189490000e8323c4f/frameset.htm
So i tried to configure the printer as a postscript device as follows:
    - I changed the Print Type in XDC to postscript (ps_plain).
    - In SPAD i changed the printer driver at the devicetypes to "PostScript printer driver".
    - I activated "Postscript-Formatting" for G_RAW (which is used by the device type).
But nothing was changed on the printout. It just prints out raw Postscript code (or something like that).
Has anyone an idea what to change to get a working printout? there is no error Message or Dump. SP01 says everything is alright. ADS is also working fine.

  • Crystal Reports 8.5 and Barcode field on Postscript printer

Hi, I have a Crystal 8.5 document with a barcode Code128 inside (Azale font). If I print the document on a PLC printer using Azalea Truetype font the Barcode are printed. If I print the document on a PostScript printer the barcode are not printed. If I change font with PostScript version and I print on a PostScript printer the barcode are not printed to.
If I print the same document with Crystal 2008 the barcode are printed in both case.
There are some problems in Crystal 8.5 for Postscript print ?
    thanks Filippo

Could be, all I can suggest is you go to the download page and install all patches available for CR 8.5. Click on the Businessobjects tab above and the Crystal Reports and then the link to get downloads.
IF that doesn't resolve the issue you may want to get the latest print drivers for your printer. If that still doesn't fix the problem then you have no option but to upgrade and try again. Cr 8.5 is 10 years old, no new updates available now.
    Thank you

  • Gimp-Print and Postscript

I just purchased an HP PCL color laser printer. Ocassionally I'll need to print EPS files with it. What's the best way to accomplish this?
    1. Use Gimp-Print drivers
    2. Create a PDF and then print the document using the standard PCL language
    3. Something else (please describe)
    Thanks,
    Kelly

Best method- use the driver that came with the printer. Every app in OS X produces postscript (OK, I suppose there might be one out there that bypasses normal programming api's). Therefore - EVERY printer driver (for non-postscript printers) in OS X must translate postscript to the printer's language.
I hope this is clear - every printer driver on OS X accepts postscript input.
    Does that help?

  • Printserver and the non-postscript printer

    Hi
Hope someone can help me. I recently bought a Linksys PSUS4 printserver so I can share a HP DeskJet 840C printer over my home network. The printserver is hooked up to a Linksys router, the printer connects to to printserver via USB.
Now, I can print without any problems using a PC with Windows XP. My Mac (connected to a router via Airport) "sees" the printer via AppleTalk, however it identifies the printer as being a postscript one, which it's not. When I tried to print anything from the Mac, I got only a line full of meaningles letters and the printer won't stop "printing" empty pages until stopped manually.
I've tried to specify the printer model and Gimp drivers, but it just doesn't work.
There's no Bonjour option when adding a new printer in the Print setup utility. The printer works fine when connected via USB.
It all works fine when working with postscript printers - my brother's network is build using the same Linksys router and printserver and I can print using his postscript printer OK. It's the same at work.
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanx

I guess you should be using the HP Deskjet 840C Gimp-Print driver included in OS X. Is that the one you tried?
Look in the manual for the print server - which protocols does it support? If TCP/IP raw or port 9100, that equals IP printer >HP Jetdirect in OS X. That's the easiest one. Can you use a browser to log into the print server and find out the port name/queue name for the LPD or IPP protocol?
Before adding printers again, try Reset Printer Setup, a menu item in Printer Setup. Then restart the Mac, then Add.

  • Can I use Airport Express for printing and Ethernet printing at same time?

I've been trying to set up a couple of laser printers that were given to me recently. The printers are Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS and Samsung CLP-510. The reason I'd like to have both up and running is because the black toner for the Samsung costs twice as much as the toner for the LaserWriter. I have two questions that I am hoping someone will be able to answer.
    1) The CLP prints a test page just fine. I was finally able to get the Samsung printing while directly connected to my PowerBook G4 via usb (I had to install a Xerox Phaser 6100 driver to do so!). Today I tried putting the usb into my Airport Express (which I use for my portable internet and airtunes) and now the printer does not respond. When I try to add the CLP as a bonjour printer, I get an error adding the printer and the printer does not respond. Can someone offer some advice as to how and if the CLP may work via the Airport Express?
    2) The LaserWriter prints a test page just fine. I purchased a transceiver (albeit not an Apple transceiver - this one says Asante Friendlynet, the guy I bought it from said it would work though). The transceiver is connected to the Ethernet port on the printer - and I have a yellow ethernet cable (?) running from the transceiver to the ethernet port on my computer. I read somewhere on the internet that I need to turn on Appletalk in order to use the printer via ethernet but when I went into my network settings to do that, there was a warning that I could not turn on appletalk for ethernet without forsaking my airport. Can someone offer some advice as to how and if the 16/600 PS may work via ethernet without disrupting my (working) airport express? Also - I did not receive any software or drivers with this printer but I read that I may not need to (they come with Tiger - ?) Is anyone able to confirm this?
Any help would be TOTALLY appreciated!
    Leigh-Ann

Hello Kappy! Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.
I should update you at this point to say that I can add the 16/600 PS printer through a process that I found called 'Direct IP printing over ethernet'. (I think I've done this correctly - but I honestly have no idea about network stuff). Here's what I did:
-went into system prefs and looked at the network settings under built-in ethernet tab. Under TCP-IP I found the IP address of my network host.
-In the Printer Setup Utility I tried to manually add the 16/600 PS printer. In the Printer Browser window, I selected IP Printer.
-Under IP printer, I selected LPD Protocol. I inserted the IP address copied from my network settings (above) in the address bar. In the Queue bar I typed in the name of the printer 'Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS'.
-Again in the Printer Browser box I gave the printer a name and location. Finally, in the 'print using' box I selected Apple and then chose the model from the drop down list. 'Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS fax v.2014.016'
-I got a dialogue box that asked about other installable features - clicked ok.
-when I tried to print a Word document, the Apple LaserWriter driver opened up and appeared in my dock and then I got an immediate error saying "network host ---.---.--.--- is busy, down, or unreachable..."
-I tried to repair permissions, but it did not resolve my issue.
-I noticed that even after adding the 16/600, it did not show up as a bonjour printer, but remained visible as a printer in my list (although grayed out).
I did some troubleshooting and the best I could find as a close match for my problem was that perhaps I had entered the name incorrectly in the Queue box...? If anyone knows how to find the appropriate name to insert I would sure appreciate knowing.
Finally - you should probably know that I received this printer from someone else. I guess I'm wondering if I need to be resetting network settings on the printer somehow? The test page lists the following:
    Ethernet (Address: 08:00:07:84:78:e9)
    EtherTalk: PostScript
    NetWare: AutoSelect
    TCP/IP: AutoSelect
    IP address: 0.0.0.0
And - now finally, to answer your questions (the best I can, that is)
I did connect the yellow network cable directly into my laptop (right side, 4th input, counting away from me). I have a portable internet modem that plugs into my wall (for power) and then has a cable (Ethernet?) that goes into my Airport Express (LAN port?). I have no other router and there are no other inputs or outputs on my modem. My Airport Express has only one input for the modem, one mini input for airtunes, and one usb input (in which I have a cable connecting to my other laser printer (now working wirelessly via Airport Express!!)
Should I have these cables hooked up differently?
What is a Phonenet adaptor? My internet is provided via a cable service (not DSL). It is wireless and portable - I can take it to any major city in Canada and it works as long as it is plugged into a power source and near a window.
I really appreciate any help you can offer. At this point I must have spent the better part of almost two weeks trying to get these older laser printers up and running.
    Thank you again.

  • Printing EPS on a non-PostScript printer

I'm using a package that generates graphics as EPS files. I need to embed these into MS Word - no problems so far! I have a DeskJet 990CXi (a non-PostScript printer) and can't find a way of printing from Word. I installed GutenPrint this morning; it installed fine, but the instructions on how to add it as a printer did not work on my system (10.4.5) - the instructions said there'd be an "Advanced" option, but it doesn't exist on my system! Any advice gratefully received, the easier to understand, the better!

I've found a workaround (more on that later), but a description of what I wanted to do: I have MS Word and I was importing EPS graphics into it. Word (v.X) would not print the EPS graphics on my HP printer, it would just print a low-res tiff graphic that was included in the EPS file, not the high-res EPS. I'd be interested to know how I could have got Word to print the EPS on my deskjet, might be useful for the future. If I had a pure PS or EPS file I don't think there would have been a problem; I think the problem was that the EPS was embedded in a Word document. I then installed gutenprint and, on my iMac, I could not get the "Advanced" option even though I was pressing the keys described in their help file. Thank you for the info on how the behaviour has changed in Tiger. I subsequently installed usbtb and things started to look a little more promising; it could see my printer. When I tried to print, the print queue kept stopping. This morning I've deleted gutenprint and usbtb as I no longer need them: I found that I can import the EPS graphics into Pages and they are converted automatically into PDF and are then scaleable etc in Pages and print with excellent results! Interestingly, importing the converted PDFs into Word gives really poor results. So, I'm going to use Pages to create my document and print to my deskjet using the standard Mac drivers. Thank you for taking the time (a) reply to my message and (b) to read this long message!

  • Tiger broke my printing support on Xerox DC 4 CP

I just upgraded from 10.1.5 to 10.4.7 and now the same PPD for Xerox Docucolor 4 CP doesn't work anymore: printing dialog shows the options, but some of them are not accessible. And in addtition the scands are not working.
There's no support on Xerox's webpage and I'm getting a little frustrated on this situation... Printing works with the generic postscript driver, but it lacks support for multiple trays and other printing features.

The printing system in Tiger is different than in OS 10.1.5. You will have to use Printer Setup Utility and select the installable options that you have on your printer.
Go to Printer Setup Utility (Applications -> Utilities). Highlight your printer in the list of printers. Then press the "i" icon at top to Show Info. You will see a pop up menu that contains "Name & Location", "Printer Model", and "Installable Options". When you choose the "Installable Options" you can check the boxes for the items and memory you have on your printer. Be sure to click "Apply Changes" when you are done. The options should then be available in the print window.
I cannot find any drivers for the scanning function.

  • Upgrading to Tiger & HP AIO printer TIP

I just upgraded from Panther to Tiger, 10.4.3. After reading about all of the issues surrounding HP AIO printer issues and upgrading to Tiger here is what I did and my HP AIO 6110 works perfectly after the upgrade.
Before upgrading I did a complete clone of my old system to a FW HD. Ran TechToolPro. Deleted all existing HP AIO software. Rebooted my machine. Upgraded to Tiger and then ran Combo 10.4.3 updater. Used Printer Setup to set up the 6110 from the Tiger upgraded drivers. Printer worked just as under Panther with no issues. Installed all the HP 6110 software.
Scanning and Coping as well as Printing all work perfectly.
I'm not saying this will work for others but it did work for me.

  • Printing with SMC4007ABR Print Server to PostScript Printer

I've just set up my Mac Mini in a new network configuration, with an old SMC4007ABR router/print server printing to my Ricoh Laser AP2100 printer, using IPP printing and the configuration for a Generic PostScript printer, which had worked for this printer in previous setups. I am using the IP address of the router, 192.168.2.1, and the queue name specified in the documentation "lpt1". When I log into the router to view the status page it says the printer is idle and ready. When I submit a print job, I get the message "Network host '192.168.2.1' is busy; will retry in 30 seconds...".
I have tried deleting the printer queue and recreating it, using the queue name with upper case, using the queue name specified for use with Windoze ("LP"), changing the router configuration from DHCP to manual IP assignments and back again, resetting the print system from the Printer Setup Utility, using the CUPS interface at http://localhost:631/ to modify the printer setup in any sane way I could think of. I have looked at anything I could find in this forum that seemed relevant, but haven't found anything to try which I haven't tried. I have tried the SMC technical support system, but the router is no longer supported by them, but by another firm which charges per incident, and doesn't support Macintosh.
I would appreciate any suggestions from people who know idiosyncracies of this router, or who have fruitful insights into this strange behavior. Clearly my Mini sees the printer queue, but not well enough to be able to transmit data to it. Thanks for any insights you can offer.

Mac Mini Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks very much for your response. It seems I was ignoring the answer in some of the posts I was looking at, having misjudged that they were applying to a different sort of situation. I can't even remember what set of instructions from years ago established such a strong prejudice that I needed the IPP protocol. In any case, I'm grateful for your help.

  • Network printing: ipp "printer is busy"/LPD and AppSock prints garbled data

    Dear all,
After months of trying on and off, I give up - I need help please. Since upgrading to Leopard, then Snow Leopard, I cannot print to the office computers. Windows or IPP printer settings produce the "printer is busy - wait 15 seconds" etc error message; LPD and AppSock printer settings enable data to get through, but the output is garbled text (the Adobe Postscript 3 engine on the printer isn't happy, obviously).
We have some new colour copier/printers from FujiXerox (FX Docucentre IV C3370) and some older Canon laser printers (LBP5600), but they don't offer Bonjour connectivity and I am stuck. I can ping them, I have the latest drivers, but nothing works. They worked fine in OS10.4 on this same computer, and XP and Windows 7 of course in BootCamp, but nothing in OS10.5 or 10.6.
I've been all over the web and through the Discussions forums and tried all the suggestions I can see, to no avail. I've tried KeyChains to carry by login ID and password to the machines, and deleting/adding printers through both the System Preferences and the CUPS interface, but I confess I am stuck. I currently copy all of my documents every day to a Dell desktop on my desk just to print them out.
The Canons are run through a Windows server, the FujiXerox has a standalone IP address and no separate print queue at the moment. Running OS10.6.2 on MacBook Pro. I'm happily connected to the network and can access all sharepoints and servers, I just can print to any of the printers - it's infuriating.
Is it a Firewall problem? Sub-net problems? Any ideas most welcome, thanks for looking and sorry if I've missed out anything important.

    MacJapan wrote:
After digging around I found the Windows drivers are ART EX drivers; obviously that doesn't really come in Macintosh flavour, but FujiXerox do have a non-postscript driver for the machine which I downloaded. This time I could connect via LPD, as FujiXerox recommend, but the print job stalls at the spooling stage; the error message reads that the 'Library/Printers/FujiXerox/Filter/FXPSACMMFilter.bundle/Contents/MacOS/FXPSACM MFilter' failed.
The filter bundle crashing could be related to permissions on the filter or a result of using a 32bit driver with a 64bit application.
    For the permissions, you could opening Terminal and entering the following text;
    sudo chown -R root:wheel /Library/Printers/FujiXerox/Filter/
then press ENTER. You will be prompted to enter you user name and password. The user name needs to be an account that has admin rights to the Mac.
Exit Terminal and restart the Mac. Now try printing again.
Regarding the 64bit apps, these are the included SL apps like Preview, TextEdit and Safari. If you attempted to print with one of these apps when you got the error, you could try forcing the app to open in 32bit mode. This is done with the application closed. Locate the app with Finder and do a Get Info on the package (icon). There will be the option to 'Open in 32bit mode'. Select this, close the Get Info window and open the app. Now try a print.
Regarding the Non-Postscript driver, looking at the FJ drivers web site, there are two of these drivers available. Both are showing as version 1.1, but the dates are different. Have a look at the following link to see if you have the one with the most recent date.
    http://onlinesupport.fujixerox.com/setupDriverForm.do?ctrycode=AU&lang_code=en&dlang=en&pid=DCIVC3370
Greg's suggestion to use the Generic PCL is also a good alternative. One thing I did find however with the PCL5c is that it does not print in colour, even though it would suggest it does based on the name (the c normally indicates colour).
Did you get the Canon LBP printing?

  • How to set up postscript Printer for printing graphics

We have a requirement to print Structured graphics. I found out that we need to set up a postscript printer for it. After debugging I found out that the Device Type name should be either GRAPHICS or POSTGR or ZGRAP.
How can we set up such a printer?
    Thanks in adv.

    Hi,
The Device Type names that you have provided are not listed in the SAP Central Note for Printers/device Types
    https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/8928
However, you can again re-check this note with your printer model and check what suitable device types should be used. As you will find inthis note:
"Device type definitions are stored completely in tables and can be individually adapted, modified or enhanced. If SAP performs such an adjustment for a customer, it constitutes a consulting service, and is generally charged seperately"
SAP has now released the SAP Printer Vendor Program - https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1130927, printer manufacturers can develop and release device types for their printers.
https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1100779 contains a list of all participants
Information about the support for new printer models is contained in the "Printer Vendor Wizard Note" of the relevant manufacturer. A complete list of all "Printer Vendor Wizard Notes" is available in Note 1097990. If your printer model is not listed in one of these "Printer Vendor Wizard Notes", proceed as described in Note 1103826.
