Tiger and using FrontRow On External Display

Looking for a way to use FrontRow so that it comes up on my TV. So far the only easy way I have come up with is to use Mirror mode, but that does not support the native display or settings of my TV like it does when spanning. I tried TVRow but that requires Leopard. Before I start mucking around with Terminal, I want to make sure that is not a Leopard only solution. I would prefer a TVRow-type solution, or a simple script. I do not want to move my entire desktop to the second screen either by moving the menu bar to the ext. display.
Is there a way to permanently edit FrontRow preferences? Sine I only use Front Row on my external monitor, that would be the easiest way to fix this. Whatever settings TVRow temporarily changes, a permanent change would work for me. I especially like the idea of HD trailers in Front Row ...

Yes, Woodwyn already mentioned that in the original post.
I should have been more clear in my post. I was suggesting that there might be a settings file for Front Row even in Tiger that could be modified directly, without using TV Row. It seemed to me that the most expedient way to get an answer about Tiger would be for Woodwyn to contact the TV Row author directly, who might have a little better idea than we do.
It might be impossible for Front Row itself to output on a non-primary monitor under Tiger, but that isn't a TV Row issue.

  • Connecting iMac Keyboard to Macbook Pro while using iMac as external display

I'm trying to using my iMac wireless keyboad for my macbook pro while my iMac is in external display mode but I can't get the keyboad to connect. I've tried disconnecting the wireless keyboard from my iMac but it won't go into target display mode without the keyboad. Can I used my iMac wireless keyboard with my Macbook pro while my iMac is being used as an external display?

No, not reliably.  If it's paired with both machines you can turn it off and turn it back on but it's a toss up which machine it will connect with.  If you took it to another room so the iMac didn't see it, you'd have to disconnect the minidisplay port/thunderbolt cable and then it would exit target mode display.

  • Can I pull out a RAID drive and use in an external enclosure?

    Hi everyone,
I have a Quicksilver with two identical drives formatted as a RAID setup (mirrored) and the G4 has reached its EOL (won't boot). Can I pull one of the RAID drives out and use in an external enclosure? Does the RAID formatting render it unusable in any other configuration? If that is the case, can I put the two drives into an external RAID enclosure?
Thanks in advance for any advice the community can supply!
    Cheers,
    James

    Hi-
Can I pull one of the RAID drives out and use in an external enclosure?
Yes. Not as the original RAID setup, but as a drive, or part of a new RAID.
Does the RAID formatting render it unusable in any other configuration?
No. Just reformat the drive, and it's a regular drive, ready to go.
If that is the case, can I put the two drives into an external RAID enclosure?
A RAID set does not have to be internal. External RAID sets can be created, and successfully used.
Use firewire, or, if SATA, an eSATA connection to PCI controller.....
If the drive is, as you say, EOL, I would write zeros to the entire drive before reformatting.
Give Disk Utility a chance to map any bad sectors......

  • New help with my mac air and airport extreme time capsule dont know how to save to time capsule and use as a external hd

new help with my mac air and airport extreme time capsule dont know how to save to time capsule and use as a external hd would like 2 store my home videos and pictures on the time machine (ONLY) as the MAC AIR has storage space limited space please help. THANK YOU.

See the info here about sharing or using the TC for data.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
It is extremely important you realise.. the Time Capsule was never designed for this.
It is a backup target for Time Machine.. that is the software on the computer that does backups.. it has no direct connection to the Time Capsule.
It has no ability to back itself up.. unlike all other NAS in the market. It is therefore likely one day you will lose all your files unless you seriously work out how to backup.
The TC is slow to spin up the hard disk and fast to spin down. iTunes and iPhoto will continually lose connection to their respective libraries.
iPhoto in particular is easy to corrupt when you move photos over wireless into the library.. once corrupted all is corrupt. A single photo will ruin it all.. so backup is utterly essential.
Time Machine cannot do backups of network drives. ie the TC. You will need a different backup software like CCC. You will then need another target to backup to..

  • Using iMac as external display from Macbook Pro flickers static and crackles.

I'm trying to use my iMac as an external display.
When I plug in my early 2011 Macbook Pro into my Mid 2010 iMac via a Belkin Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort, the iMac screen flickers with static and there's random crackling noises.
Weird thing is, when I try the same thing with a new Macbook Air, everything works perfectly!
    Here's a quick video demonstrating what I'm talking about - http://youtu.be/xxTXVRffWwE
Are the two not compatible or do I just have a defective Macbook Pro? The Macbook Pro works fine with the Cinema Display I have in the office...

Huh, It should work like this:
Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
    iMac Model
    Cable Supported
    Port on Source Computer
    iMac (27-inch Late 2009)
    Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort
    Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt
Actually that table seems illogical. The cable supported is mini to mini display but the port says "or Thunderbolt"
Does that seem contradictory to you?

  • Using tv as external display for MacBook Air?

Does anyone know how to use a 21.5" Samsung LED TV with 1920x1080 resolution as the external display for a MacBook Air A1369 running OS X 10.6.8 (broken screen)?

I guess you have to buy a Belkin HDMI routing cable. From Thunderbolt/Display port to HDMI.
Then plug it in to your macbook and into your tv. Then press CMD+F1 and voila.
If you still have any problems, i like to hear from you.

  • Display gray, but OS loads and is fine in external display.

    Hello there.
I'm having trouble with a PowerBook G4, where on starup
I hear the chime, but then the screen just goes gray. When
the external display is hooked up, after a while I will see
the OS loading screen. All seems normal on the external
display that I'm writing this on, but the screen on the PB is always gray. I tried doing verbose boot, but didn't see any text. I also can't seem to boot from the disc. I hold down option and the external turns blue, but it seems that it is
using it as an additional screen, and not mirroring. F7 didn't
seem to help in that case.
    Any Ideas?

    Hi,
Check that you have Color "LCD-4270800.icc" in /Library/ColorCync/Profiles/Displays ,
My was gone for some reason, I downloaded http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048updateppc.html an anfter installing it, that profile is now in System Preferences/Displays, my computer recognizes the display as a Color LCD not as a "VGA" display like it did before.

  • Hooking mac mini up to emac with firewire, and using emac as the display

Is this possible? Would it work to hook up the mac mini via firewire to the emac and use the emac disaplay to run the computer? Thanks

    I second that!
This is a question that is asked with remarkable regularity, and while it is possible to connect the two systems and to 'run' the mini either as a remote hard drive (a very expensive way of gaining slow external storage) or remote control it, the former is an inefficient use of the mini and the latter only allows you to open a window onto the mini from the host system, where performance is somewhat limited.
Better in this sort of situation to sell the old system and use the money to buy a new display for the mini, or if the old system is needed and funds very limited, to look for a used display.

  • Connecting 2 (21.5" & 27") iMacs and using 21" as second display

    Hi, I have 2 imacs (1x27 and 1x21.5), 27 is mid 2010 and 21.5 is late 2009.
Iam trying to find out if I can use 21 as 2nd display off the 27.
I connected them together with mini dv and they default to 21 as primary and 27 as 2nd.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated?
    Thanks in advance.
    Paul

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course not. Late 2009 and Mid 2010 21'5-inch iMacs can't be used for Target Display mode because they aren't compatible. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
It means that you can't use your old 21'5-inch iMac as an external display wired, but you can use it wirelessly. To do it, you just need that both iMacs are connected to the same network and the app ScreenRecycler

  • Using iMac as external display with MBP, can this be done?

    I know...
This has been posted before, but I have as of yet not found a straight answer. Mostly peoples recommendation is: "Buy a display".
However, I have an older iMac, 20" and I have a newer MBP 15". The MBP has a faster graphics card, better processor and more RAM. But I still like sitting at the table using my iMac, because the comfort of working is better this way.
Now seeing that I have both, is it possible to connect the two, and use the iMac for a display? Preferably without having to buy a whole lot of expensive cables, applications or do strange hacks risking hurting myself or my computers
    Thanks all
    Have a nice day

but I have as of yet not found a straight answer.
I think you are getting the straight answer. You need "buy a display" because a display has a video input port. An iMac has a video output port, but NO video input port. Therefore, you cannot use it as an external display, like a regular display.
You could give the iMac a video input using a USB interface device, but the cost of such a device that would provide good quality video into the iMac would cost about the same as (or more than) a low cost LCD display. And it would probably not be ideal in terms of performance.
You could also use this clever program to use a fast network connection and VNC to display the MacBook Pro's second screen on the iMac screen.
    http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html
In your case, the program will create a virtual screen for the MacBook Pro and shares it with the iMac in much the same way as the +screen sharing+ feature. Disadvantages are relatively slow image refresh rate (because the signal is going over the network) and the need to have the iMac turned on and running separately. The speed part will not be that bad in your case, if you use a Cat-5e or better Ethernet cable to connect the two Macs, so that you will have gigabit speed. You can give it a try at no cost to see if it is an acceptable solution (in time-limited demo mode).
I use this program to give my iMac a third display. The +third display+ is an old PC laptop running Linux (Ubuntu).

  • Using iMac as external display on MBP (Lion)

I'm trying to use my 27" iMac as the external monitor for my MBP, both running Lion.  I saw an article (support.apple.com/kb/PH4469; seems to be unavailable now) and said I just need to hit command+F2 once the computers are connected (using thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable). However, Command+F2 doesn't appear to have any effect.
    Please advise.
    TIA,
    David

No, not unless your Windows box has a Thunderbolt output port which it almost certainly does not. Please carefully read Apple's Target Display Mode 2011 Macs that extplains.
