Tiger DHCP/Ethernet Problem :(

I'm staying in a hotel which offers free (ethernet based) broadband. The connection works througha D-Link 502-G dsl modem, and is routed through a Linksys router. All the other computers onthe network (iMac, iBooks) work fine. All are running Panther (10.3.0). I am using a G4 Powerbook running Tiger (10.4.3), but cannot get a DHCP address. Every time, the Mac self-assigns a local IP address (169.254.x.y). I have used several different cables, restarted teh Linksys Router to no avail. disabled PPoE, turned firewall off tried manually entering an IP address, subnet mask and router address...
Nothing! And yet when I plug the iBook (not mine) running 10.3 back in, it immediately gets a DHCP address in teh 10.1.x.y range and works perfectly.
This is the first time I've had problems with any hard-wired (or wireless network) adn I'm now at a loss. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks

Try this:
Remove the Ethernet cable from the computer. Open
Network preferences and select Airport then click on
the Configure button. Click on the built-in Ethernet
tab. Click on the TCP/IP tab. Set the Configure
IPv4 to Manually and click on the Apply button. Then
reset Configure IPv4 to DHCP and click on the Apply
button. Nothing should be set for PPoE. AppleTalk
should be OFF and no proxies configured. Quit
Network and shut down the computer. Assuming the
local router/gateway is configured and working
connect the Ethernet cable from the router/gateway to
the computer. Now turn on the computer. See if you
now get a proper IP address.
If you continue having problems try the following as
well:
1. In Network preferences turn off IPv6 (click on the
IPv6 button in the TCP/IP panel and select Off from
the drop down menu.)
2. Trash the
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.
plist file and the
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder.
Restart and reconfigure Network preferences.
Thanks for this... unfortunately neither has worked. Resetting TCP/IP IPv4 to Manually and back to DHCP and restarting gives me teh same local IP address (169.254.x.y)
Turning off IPv6 and trashing the files/folder you suggested, I get no DHCP address (not even a self-assigned address), System did not create a new SystemConfiguartion folder, so I as forced to restore it (having kept a copy) - I'm now back to where I started.
I did think for a moment that my Ethernet port was dead, but I can ping and access 10.1.1.1 (which is the d-Link DSL modem) so it can't be that
Anyone any otehr ideas?

  • HELP!!! Mac G4 450mhz dual ethernet PROBLEMS!

Hello, my mac is having a serious problem with the internet. It won't connect, and even though i have a ethernet cable plugged in, it says i don't. Everything was working fine until i left for 2 days and and plugged it for that time. I need the internet in that mac as soon as possible.
    PLEASE HELP ME!

I too, am having the same problem... but mine isn't because of the possible software update, it just flat out doesn't work!
I too, have tried asking for help with the possibility of (hopefully) restoring the driver/extension... but after reformating the drive and reinstalling the software from 10.2, to 10.2.8 and it still failed to work, I ended up buying a Belkin Gigabit Ethernet PCI Card that has FAILED in every way!!!
The Belkin card will work as a one-time thing, and after restarting or disconnecting the Ethernet cable, it fails to function and fails to be "selectable" within the Ethernet configuration "Show:" options.
    ...so don't buy the Belkin...
I have yet to resolve my dead Ethernet problem, and it is... a problem!
I know this isn't contributing much of anything, but don't waist your time with the Belkin. I bought one, it acted in the way described above, and the Belkin Tech Support suggested I exchange it with another one, and so I did... and it too... is acting in the manner described above.
No resolve... no Ethernet... no on-line schtuff. not on that G4!!!

  • Macbook Pro ethernet problems

    Hi All:
First post here. I have a 15" first generation MBP, and I'm having some ethernet problems. When my ethernet works, it works fine. However, if i were to shut down the machine and disconnect the ethernet cable, I cannot reconnect to the ethernet. In Network Preferences, Ethernet is not available in the pulldown and it appears gray-ed out in the Network Port Configurations. Restarting the computer, unplugging or resetting the modem doesn't help. Also, the PC link light on the modem will not be lit (but is lit when working).
The computer will not connect to any ethernet network, no matter where I am.
I've noticed if I keep resetting both comuter an modem a couple dozen times over a few hours, the PC link button will light, and upon next startup the ethernet connection will be restored. What do you guys think the problem is? It seems abnormal to me.

Had a similar situation with mine back in January, 2.16 Intel.
After spending 3 nights with my Cable ISP as the connection would drop-off, ethernet light flicker green, amber etc.
Took it back to Apple dealer, connected to Dealers network same problem. Cause:::: Motherboard had to be replaced, possible soder loose on the MO. Got it back in 10 days, haven't had a problem ever since.
Suggest you take back yours to have Apple dealer try this out.

  • Failed to start a basic dhcp ethernet connection

    hello everyone,
when booting i get this error. i now dont need the ethernet connection, but i still would like to understand and get rid of that error, which occurs since that day, where i tried to setup the ethernet. the error is as follows (didnt find some log, so i just wrote it by myself, not sure if the wording is completely identical):
Failed to start a basic dhcp ethernet connection. See 'systemctl status [email protected]' for details.
    any ideas?

  • Help with ethernet problems

    Can anyone help with this?
Have a black powerbook, snow leopard, safari. No problems at all with wireless/ethernet at home
When at work, usually just unplug ethernet from work PC and once plugged into mac, it automatically detects internet connection just like that
For some reason, tonight, when I try this have no connection (an exclamation mark over the airport icon) and when I go into network in sys pref, says "self assigned ip address"
If I switch to DHCP manually, can input ip address from PC and it works fine but whenever i try and switch to automatic, it wont work
Have spent ages looking through the internet to try and find answer - firewall is off, no recent changes to software/hardware, flushed ipfw, etc
    Any bright ideas?
    Thanks a lot

I am a bit confused by your post. Are you trying to connect to your network wirelessly using the AirPort card, or are you trying to use a wired connection via your Ethernet port?
What is the source of your Internet connection? DSL? Cable modem? Something else?
Are you connected to a router? What make and model?
    Best of luck.

  • Very strange ethernet problem with iMac G5

Thanks in advance for your help.
I am helping my boss dust the cobwebs out of our network infrastructure (I work for a relatively small company in Michigan). In doing so, I unplugged all the ethernet cables out of our Linksys 24-port 10/100 switch and blew the dust out of the unit using canned air. I did not spray any of the propellant from the canned air and get anything wet.
Once I finished cleaning the unit, I powered it up and began plugging cables back in. I decided to try to group all the workstation cables into the first few ports. There are only 7 workstations. The switch indicated that all 7 were connected at full duplex and activity LED was blinking on all 7. I plugged our file server, AirPort and uplink to internet into the last 3 ports, and all the unused cables into the remaining ports. All 24 ports have cables plugged in, but as I said there are only 7 workstations plus the 3 other devices I mentioned. The remaining dozen or so cables lead to unused wall jacks. All ports on the switch were filled before and after the cleaning.
Here's the problem. One of our workstations, an iMac G5, suddenly was not able to connect to the internet. I checked in the network settings to make sure IPv4 was configured correctly. This particular machine has a manually assigned IP of 192.168.1.16/255.255.255.0. Router and DNS are also manually set. It has to be manually assigned - a public IP forwards to it via NAT in our DSL modem/router.
I decided to termporarily change this to DHCP. Our DCHP server is on another machine running OS X Server 10.4.11. The DHCP server is configured to assign IPs from 192.168.1.101-200. However, when I set the iMac in question to get its IP adderess through DHCP, it is assigned an IP of 169.254.179.148 (or something close to that). Confused, I checked the DHCP log on the server and found no entry for the problematic iMac requesting an IP.
I then turned off TCP/IP for the ethernet port, set TCP/IP to DHCP for the AirPort, and renewed. I got IP of 192.168.1.107. So it works properly with AirPort. Disabled TCP/IP for AirPort, FireWire, Bluetooth, enabled using DHCP for ethernet, and renewed. Got 169.x.x.x again.
Also tried switching ports on 24-port switch (tried 4 different ports), running a 50' CAT5 cable to another ethernet port in same room. Moving machine into the room where the switch is located seems pointless as I've tried multiple ports and cables already. None of my attempts has fixed this problem.
    Please help!

So it works with AirPort but not over Ethernet?
Have you tried creating a new location in System Preferences Network pane, and setting Ethernet up from the default settings?
Make sure the iMac G5 is not set up to do +Internet Sharing+ (using the Ethernet port); look in System Preferences Sharing pane, and turn OFF +Internet Sharing+ if it is currently ON.
Is one of the other workstations a Mac? If so, you could use it to test the iMac G5's Ethernet port, by connecting it directly and using +File Sharing+ (I suppose you could do that even with a Windows PC).

  • Ethernet problem - self-assigned IP address

I'm just testing my spanking new Mac Pro with Leo 10.5.6 (still holding back to go to 10.5.7 as there are issues with certain audio apps) and I can't get an internet connection via ethernet and a router. In the network config I get the dreaded 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address and the message "Ethernet 1 has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect". (ethernet 2 has the same problem). Manual DHCP does not work either.
The router is a D-Link DI-624 connected to a cable modem.
I have absolutely no problem connecting to the internet with my Macbook or any other PC through the router.
Strangely, the Mac Pro can connect to the internet and gets an IP if directly plugged into the cable box. However as I often need a wireless connection I need to keep using the router.
Apart from an answer, I would also appreciate if we could avoid wasting time by asking the typical first level help desk questions, such as "have you restarted the router?" etc. I'm not computer illiterate and all the symptoms and logical deductions clearly indicate that the problem is solely in the Mac Pro.
    Thanks much.

    I'm having the same problem.
I have a brand new router and switch, everything works fine when I plug the cable into my PC Laptop and worked fine with my Mac Pro until today!
Now, I get the nasty "169..." self-assigned IP on both Ethernet ports and cannot connect to the internet.
I have deleted both the ETHERNET 1 and ETHERNET 2 Prefs as R2B suggested but sadly, it did not work for me. As I reassign the Ethernet, it gives me the same error
    any ideas??
    thanks!

  • Serious Ethernet problems I could use some help with please.

    Good day.
After about two weeks of trouble shooting I replaced the AP card in my MacPro.
No good, still not seeing networks.
I tried as a troubleshoot, plugging in a AP Express via Enet into my MacPro, it was seeing the Enet port for a while but now shows, via the Network prefs, that nothing is plugged into either Enet 1 or 2 ports. I've tried both.
I've done the usual, trashed the plist files, reset the PMU button/ctr-cmd-P-R etc., all with no avail.
Coupled with the orig problem of the MacPro and AP card setting an "Internet IP" number I'm thinking I have some type of ethernet "board" problem.
Can any give any suggestions short of bringing this beast in please?
    Thank you much.
    Tom

i haven't had ethernet on my pro since last year. I've tried over 25 configurations and tests and still, the leopard system im using has broken ethernet.
from this, this is what im going to ask/suggest.
    1) reinstall another copy of leopard (retail) on another hard drive. No migration assistant. I did this and i had ethernet again. But a virgin system and litterally days to reinstall everything. (which i didn't do). But the test worked.
    2) or if you have a working version of tiger, try it to test (you don't mention which macpro you have. some had tiger)
    3) have you tried networking with ethernet cables, just to see if that works? Not the AP, but directly to a router or another mac.
    4) if you have access to a dock/enclosure and another mac, try booting that other mac with your hard drive. If you have access, then its not the system, but the ethernet hardware in your pro.

  • Ethernet problem (may be caused by Parallels)

Everything on my iMac was working fine, and I was using Parallels for Outlook and all of my usual Mac apps, including Safari. Then, internet access for the Mac apps stopped working, although internet access through Parallels continued to work. I rebooted several times, tried network diagnostics, and renewed my DHCP lease.
But here is where I am now:
    - My DSL works fine, because I can access the internet through other computers
    - The Ethernet connection itself works when I plug it into other Macs
    - When using Parallels on my iMac, I can access the internet
    - When using Mac applications on my iMac through my usual Ethernet connection, I can't access the internet. However, it works on this computer wirelessly.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can get my iMac to access the internet through this Ethernet connection again, as it did before?

I had this problem once while I was travelling. I found I could use ethernet through Parallels or Mac OS, but not both. At the time, I blamed Comcast, and just kept rebooting until the ethernet worked in the OS in which I wanted it to work...
But, while I still blame Comcast I have since realized what I should have tried, so perhaps you can be the guinea pig. Parallels has various ways of contacting the internet. The default method is that it creates its own socket or something for accessing the internet, which has its own IP address. I wouldn't be surprised if this is creating the exclusivity you are observing--one ethernet cable equals one IP address so either Parallels has an IP address with internet or Mac OS does, but not both. So instead tell Parallels to use the Mac OS ethernet connection (Shared Networking). To configure this, I think you have to shut down Windows, and then, with the Virtual Machine window up, select Edit > Configure > Networking. See p. 157-8 of the Parallels User Guide.

  • E1200 odd roque DHCP server problem

My local network connected to AT&T Uverse has both len and wiress connections.  with some devices specified in the DHCP reservations list.  all has worked fine for a while now. the UVerse modems do not support DHCP reservation configurations.
last weekend, one of my Linux machines (in the DHCP reservation list) suddenly changed its address from 192.168.2.34 (dhcp server at 192.168.2.1 as confgured) to 192.168.1.105 (dhcp server at 192.168.1.251). I couldn't find the second DHCP server, and eventually put iptables on my linux box to drop packets from that server and get back up and running..  spent sat/sunday fixing this.
Monday it happened again!.. even tho the iptables was still set to drop the packets!.. I found a dhcp roque utility for windows and started isolating parts of my network til I was down to two machines.. one windows and the E1200.
I ended up using the admin UI on the E1200 to restore the router to default and reconfigure back to operation, and the rogue DHCP server is gone!... I did NOT try to power off/on the router.
I do not know how this happened. Altho the E1200 was in the UVerse modem DMZ (so I could get DDNS to work) , I changed the userid and password, did not have wireless admin access or Wan admin acces enabled. It seems 'unlikely' that the router had been hacked, but I have no other explanation unless there is a pretty serious firmware bug. I have found other reports of similar behavior on other vendors routers, which seem to be caused by a loss of the wan link AND having DHCP reservation machines.
I have not tried to recreate the scenario. any ideas welcomed.

    config
ATT Pace modem, DHCP on, wireless on, address range 192.168.1.2- 192.168.1.40, dhcp server at 192.1.1
ethernet cable from ATT modem to 1200 'wan' port.
1200 DCHP on, base address 192.168.2.1, dhcp range 192.168.2.2-192.168.2.200, wireless on
    out of E1200
    ethernet to local machine
    ethernet to Insteon automation hub
ethernet to 4 port ethernet switch on other side of room
switch to local windows machine (dhcp reservation address 192.168.2.106)
switch to back of Dlink 1522 Access point, providing wireless to TV, Blueray player and roku box, access point address 192.168.2.5 in E1200 DHCP reservations list. DHCP off on 1522
back of dlink (4 port switch) ethernet to linux machine. 2 ft away.
back of dlink (4 port switch) to NAS storage device.
Brother multi-function laser configured fixed address Wirless to 1200 (192.168.2.195), need wireless for tablet/iphone/ipad print support.
so we have 1 ethernet network, and 3 wifi networks. (all 2.4mhz)
(my dauther and son-in-law here as they move back to local area from Chicago, have connectivity issues with wireless on 1200, due to house walls, not so much on UVerse modem.  1522 dedicated to entertainment systems.
Only the ethernet connected Linux box experienced this dhcp problem.
the roque dhcp server was at 192.168.1.251, and provided ip address 192.168.1.105
note that AT&T DHCP is 192.168.1.255

  • NAC as DHCP server problem

    Hi guys,
i have problem use nac server as dhcp server at different subnet.
one thing that i want to know is dhcp in NAC server support unicast dhcp messages ?
because when client use layer 2 connection to nac server, dhcp works fine. i think they use dhcp broadcast message.
    thanks

    Hi,
Ensure your internal network can ping the DHCP server, which in this case I think is your Hyper-V host. This probably requires that you configure an IP address on your Hyper-V host that matches the subnet you have configured on the DHCP scope.
When you add a virtual network to Hyper-V, this will add a virtual network adapter on the Hyper-V host. You can see the adapter in ipconfig with a name that matches the name of the virtual switch, for example: Ethernet adapter vEthernet (Internal Network).
I'm not sure what your goals are here. It sounds like you want to give the VMs access to the Internet, which can be done much more simply by just creating an External virtual network rather than an Internal one with NAT.
Whatever your configuration, consider that DHCP works only one of two ways:
    1. DHCP server exists on the same subnet as the scope subnet and shares one of these subnet IP addresses.
    2. DHCP server has a different IP address than the scope, and clients use DHCP relay to get to the DHCP server.
If you don't have a DHCP relay, then you must use the first method.

  • Home Hub Ethernet problem

I have the old white Homehub with software version 6.2.6.E
I have been having an intermittent problem which is now happening everyday.
My homehub is left on the whole time. During the day laptops can connect to it with wireless. When I come home in the evening and turn on my PC, which is connected to it by ethernet, the PC does not connect. It does not see the connection. If I turn off the Homehub and then turn  it on again then, when the Homehub has settled down the PC does connect.
I think that the Homehub must be at fault. The call centre suggest that my Ethenet cable or my network chip are at fault.  suppose that I can change the cable and see if it makes a difference but has anyone come across this problem before? What is the likely cause?

    A few things to try:
When your wired PC fails to connect, open a command prompt and type
    ipconfig
The IP address should be 192.168.1.xx
where xx is a number between 64 and 254
    If you see
    169.254.x.x
then this is a private address and eiether your computer (probably Vista or XP)
has failed to receive a DHCP address.
If you see network unreachable or 0.0.0.0
then this is also a network failure.
You should be able to simply unplug the ethernet cable, wait 10 secs
then reconnect  or at a terminal
    type  ipconfig /renew
Do you shut down, hibernate or put the wired computer on standby?
Also what version windows are you using?
It could be a power management issue, that the ethernet card is in sleep
    state and not properly initialized.
If its Vista (which is slow anyway) then it could be a number of issues
You can also try using the alternative ethernet port of the white home hub

  • Tiger and VLAN problem

I bought a new MacBook Pro a few weeks ago. It is working well in my house. But I tried to connect this macbook to our company's intranet in my office, it's network performance is extremely low. So, I gather some tcpdump data and I found that the VLAN tag is coming into my macbook (such as 713, 709 as vlan id). My company uses the IP phone and support guys said that VLAN tag behaviour is normal thing. Actually, in windows system, there was no problem.
I found the increasing Input error count in output of netstat -in output also. I think, this increasing input error count is related to VLAN tag.
I looked into the tcpdump output and sometimes there is no VLAN tag in the packet from switch, and then, those packets seem to be permitted because the packet flow shows that tiger sent legal next packet, not retransmission.
So, I think I have two options to bypass this situation...
    1. If possible, strip off VLAN tags regardless of VLAN id because vlan id is not important in this case. But I have no idea how to do it.
    2. If possible, give the VLAN ID to my ethernet adapter such as 709, 713 etc. Also, I don't know how to do it.
Can anybody help me? Thanks in advance...

TinkerTool (free) can make invisible files visible: click on 'Finder' in the toolbar and then check 'Show hidden and system files' and click the button to relaunch the Finder. /usr and /var at at the root level of your hard disk, if I remember correctly.
*Warning: be very careful*. Do not delete or tamper with any file unless you are quite clear what it is. Deleting the wrong file could seriously damage your System.
When you have finished, be sure to uncheck that checkbox and relaunch the Finder again to hide the invisible files.

  • IMac G4 800 mhz - Ethernet problem

I have a problem with an 800 mhz G4 iMac, running 10.3.9. The computer is hard wired to a Linksys WRT54G with a DSL connection. I have wireless access through other computers, so I am fairly confident there is no problem with the Internet or the router.
When the computer gets turned on, most of the time, it will not get an IP address from the router. It is set to use DHCP, IPv6 is Off, Ethernet is set to automatic. The router shows a blinking light for the related port. This will go on sometimes forever with no change, sometimes the machine eventually gets an IP address and establishes the appropriate connection. The outcome is not repeatable.
I can "force" it to make the connection by going into Network and configuring the Ethernet manually. If I put the speed on "autoselect" and the Maximum Packet Size at Standard, the Router indicator shows a steady light (ie link between the computer and the router). The internet still doesn't work, although the computer will have an appropriate IP address at this point.
I then turn the Ethernet back to automatic and the router and computer will "lose" the connection. After something between 1 and 5 minutes, the computer will "get" its IP address using DHCP and everything functions fine until the computer is shut down again.
I am stumped. One other detail - I had an ISDN line prior to getting DSL (we live in the sticks and it wasn't available until recently) and the ISDN router got fried in an electrical storm while we were gone. The computer was on at the time. My only other thought is that the network card got fried as well and is now intermittent....doesn't seem likely to me, but maybe possible?

  • Wierd Ethernet Problem!!!!!!!!! [Resolved]

Ok, if someone can figure this one out, I'd be eternally grateful. I can do a clean FTP install (no errors, no problems). The install CD can load my NIC module, get a DHCP lease, and download apps with no problems. However, as soon as I boot into my install (base packages only), the network daemon fails to load. The only error I get in any of my log files is in daemon.log and it says something to the effect of
daemon.log wrote:DHCPCD failed to load because eth0 is not 802.11 or Ethernet compliant
I thought it was a module issue, but I copied the kernel config from the install cd that works
    zcat /proc/config.gz > /mnt/usr/src/kernel-2.6.10/.config
and still get the same results!
    Here's some more info:

    rc.conf wrote:eth0="dhcp"
    · If I set a static IP, the daemon loads fine but I cannot ping my router on the same subnet.

When using static ip, I did remove the "!" in the ROUTES section (I also modified to fit my subnet - 192.168.1.1): same results.
I did NOT background hotplug, I let the hotplug daemon load the module. I know the 8139too is the correct module becase
    · I've used the same module in other distro's
    · It's the module that the intsall CD uses
Also, an lsmod shows that 8139too is loaded as soon as the boot process finishes.
