Tiger doesn't see hard drive

Good morning guys,
I am looking for some assistance debugging an issue where my powerbook will not see the hard drive. I was given this powerbook to work on (no previous history of ever working before). When I got it it would give me the grey screen and the spinning circle for a few seconds then automatically shut down. The first thing I did was to confirm my suspicions (a bad drive) so I used an external firewire drive and managed to install the OS without any issues. Then once in OS X I tried to repair/format the internal drive without any luck. It would just hang forever. So I decided I need to try a new drive. Now, before I go any further I need to point out that when I'd hold the 'option' key down upon boot up it would give me the option to boot from either drive (internal and firewire), in other words OS X would still 'see' the internal drive as being available to bootstrap.
In order to replace the new drive I followed the instructions in this YouTube video from OWC which as you could see it's pretty straight-forward. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBDHyEQ1bQQ
Two items to note: I've tried two new HDs (not new but known to be working), one of them being the one I used to install the OS externally via FW. In fact this one I didn't even format it, I just threw it in as the replacement internal drive. So here are the results: OS X now gives me the folder/flashing ? when I boot. But the most disturbing thing to me is that when I boot off of the DVD to install the OS the HD is not listed at all in the Disk Utility. Running *diskutil info* from the Terminal also shows no drive. In addition to this when I boot holding down the option key the internal drive is no longer showing up either (not even when I have gone back to using the *original drive*!). I have re-watched the video to make sure I didn't miss anything (like a missing ribbon cable being loose etc. and have also tried another HD that I formated from another powerbook via the FW and still the same result.
So here are my questions:
- Why is it that multiple HDs are not showing up as I hold down the Option key when prior to the failed HD replacement that used to be the case?
- OpenFirware as far as I can tell is seeing the drive when I run '0 > devalias hd /pci@f4000000/ata-6@d/disk@0 ok' . Is this enough to conclude the drive is installed correctly?
- I took an original OS X DVD that came with my other 15" PB and used it to run the Apple Hardware Test on this problematic PB and even the extensive mode test came back fine. Mass Storage passed with no problems.
Well I hope you all have some ideas coz I am willing to try them.
Oh BTW, I have ran a PRAM and PMU resets just in case also.
Sorry for the long email...
Thanks in advance to any brave souls to jump on this one

As I'm at work, I don't recall there being an apple menu. Just a language selection, then and agreement page and then it looks for the hard drive. Do I have to hold down a certain key to access the apple menu?

I heard Drive Genius 2 and Data Rescue II would be helpful but i do not know how to make them bootable. The imac also takes an unusual amount of time to boot into any bootable CD/USB drive (almost double the time of a 2006 MBP c2d). I've been trying to avoid opening this imac because I have heard they're really iffy to open, been thinking about trying to re-seat the HDD. Could it be a possibly "bad" HDD? I would really appreciate any thoughts because i'm not sure what else to do =/.

While your iMac can read and write to MS-DOS FAT 32, it has a 4GB file limit and does not support booting.
If you want to Install the OS X on any Drive and Boot from it, you will need to repartition it (GUID Partition Table) and reformat it (Mac OSX Extended Journaled) using Disk Utility.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't see hard drive

My MacBook Pro doesn't see it's hard drive. It doesn't show up when I press the Option key or in Disk Utility on the Snow Leopard disc. It was working for a while and then the computer started freezing, mainly when I was using Xcode. I thought it was an OS problem originally. Then it would occasionally not see the hard drive and come up with the "?" folder. It steadily got worse until it reached where I am now, not working at all. It doesn't see my Windows XP partition either. I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM, but to no avail. The OS boots just fine when I put the hard drive in a different MacBook, so it's not the hard drive. I have taken great care of this computer, rarely taking it out of the house. I did buy it used with a backlight problem though, so I don't know exactly what the previous owner did. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
Or if you have Diskwarrior or Techtool Pro use one of these utilities by booting directly from their cd.

  • Time Machine doesn't see Hard drive

I have an external USB hard drive attached to a macbook pro. When I go to set up Time Machine, the hard drive is not shown. It shows up in the Finder no problem. I have it attached through a USB hub with an AC adapter.
    Why won't it "see" it?

try plugging it in directly without using a USB hub. also, how is the drive formatted?

  • Leopard cannot see hard drive on any Mac running Tiger.

Running Leopard 10.5.2 on a Mac Pro 3GHz 4-core w/6GB RAM. I cannot connect to any hard drive / root directory on any Mac on my network running Tiger (10.4.9, .10 or .11) or OS9. Yes I have an Avid Meridian in the edit suite runing OS 9.2.2. No laughing please...
I can connect to the User folder on any Mac running Tiger but not any hard drives on any Mac running Tiger from a Mac running Leopard. The hard drive cannot be accessed from a User folder even if an alias of the Tiger drive is placed in the ~/User/Public folder.
The reverse works as usual. Any Mac running Tiger can see any hard drive on any networked Mac including Macs running Leopard.
Has anyone else encountered this issue &/or found a workaround? I spent almost 2 hours with Apple Tech Support including a system specialist. They confirmed this behavior in Leopard connected to Tiger OS Macs. Hard drives can be seen between all Macs running Leopard. It was theorized by one of the Apple techs that the behavior was engineered to encourage upgrading all Macs to Leopard. BAD idea! I requested this be reported to Apple engineering.
Tiger can see any drive on the network back to OS7. Leopard cannot see previous OS version hard drives.
    TIA for replies.

I suggest that you repeat the external boot process with your MBP.  If it boots the MBP, the internal SATA cable probably is faulty and should be replaced.
    Ciao.

Download and read the documentation for Carbon Copy Cloner which is handy and what a lot of us have used over the years to clone, migrate and backup or manage drives and storage.
I think 500GB is overkill for boot drive as most of your apps and OS only need less than 150GB, and all of your data and media and home folders can be anywhere you want and not on the boot drive. Also, Apple way over charges for 2TB drives and no reason or value to do so. That is history now but fwiw.
You could I guess setup one 2TB as boot drive easy enough. Then migrate etc. Make that a backup of everything. Then manually or with CCC or other you can clone just what you want to SSD and to the other 2TB drive.
Apps should always go to the boot drive, the SSD in this case, and not to other locations. No benefit putting them elsewhere.
When you migrate are your files on TimeMachine or just standard files and folders? and can't selectively copy? Honestly never found need to use M.A. more than once probably.

  • M8530f desktop PC with a m2n78-la mother board doesn't see my drives

i have a m8530f desktop PC with a m2n78-la mother board it doesn't see my drives for some reason. i thought it might be a bios problem. is there any way to fix this or do i need to get another board

Before you begin, disconnect everything from the computer (USB devices, printers, floppy disks, and CD/DVD discs) but leave the mouse, monitor and keyboard connected. You already checked and made sure that the power and data cables have a good connection to your drives and the motherboard now go to your BIOS Setup (should be F10) and reset the BIOS to its' defaults (should be F5 and then press the enter key). Arrow over to the Main screen and the hard drive should be recognized. Exit BIOS and save the changes. The computer should load the Windows OS if it's installed on the hard drive. If you get into Windows, check the Device Manager to make sure that the drive is showing up there too. If the hard drive was not detected, after you save the changes and exit the BIOS, turn off the computer. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the PC then press the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the computer and see if it boots up.  If it still doesn't boot up, try a different SATA connection on the motherboard (one that hasn't been used). If that doesn't help, disconnect the Memory card reader connections inside the computer and try to boot again. If it still doesn't work and since you already tried a new hard drive, I would suspect a SATA controller/bus problem and you may need to install a SATA controller card to resolve the problem.

  • Upgrading to Tiger on a partitioned hard drive

A friend asked me to update their iMac which has a partitioned drive running Classic and 10.2. Once I install 10.4, is it possible/necessary/advisable to remove the partition that has Classic? The iMac is pretty old and doesn't have a lot of free space, and they don't need to retain any of the Classic software. Thanks.
iMac intel   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If you want to remove the OS 9 partition, you need to repartition the drive before installing Tiger and if the hard drive space is limited and your friend no longer needs to use any OS 9 applications then I certainly recommend recovering that hard drive space.
Backup all data first and you can reformat the drive with Tiger retail install package selecting HFS+ (or extended) with Journaling enabled and no point in installing the OS 9 drivers which will be an available option.
Regarding free hard drive space, your friend needs to check this link for future reference.

  • Windows 8 does not see hard drive on Satellite A200

Windows 8 does not see hard drive on A200.
    How to install?

    > with Vista works fine,
Does this mean that Vista is still installed or is HDD visible while Vista installation setup?
Some notebooks HDD controller needs SATA driver in order to be able to install system.
Sat A200 is a little bit older but I dont think the SATA driver is needed here to install Win 8.
I guess you didnt any SATA drivers to install the Vista right?
Set the BIOS to default and try to boot again using Win 8.

  • Installing Mac OS X Tiger on an external hard drive

I was wondering how to install Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger on an external hard drive. I have a 40GB USB/Firewire LaCie Mobile Hard Drive.
I've tried using disk utility to convert it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but when I attempt install Mac OS Tiger from the system disc after restarting the computer, it shows the available disks that Tiger can be installed on and the ones it can't be installed on, and my external drive shows up as one that it can't be installed on for some reason.
I don't really want to clone my internal hard drive to the external one, but instead want to just be able to use my external hard drive as a mobile startup disk where I can work on files using other Mac computers when I'm away from home.
    Any suggestions?
    Apple Mac mini (late 2005)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   PowerMac10,2: 1.5GHz, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD, BT/AE...

What did you do in DU? Erase? Partition? and what was it before? or just to enable journaling? What is on the LaCie now and does it have adequate space?
Do you have an upgrade Tiger disk?
And why not just clone the system using CCC and skipping /Users and other directories you want to skip?
One last thing: click on the volume and do a Get Info and make sure that Ignore Ownership is not selected.

  • After installing Mountain Lion doesn't external hard drives mount or stay mounted. Anybody else with this major problem?

After installing Mountain Lion doesn't external hard drives mount or stay mounted.
I have tried resetting my Mac's PRAM but the problem still remains.
Even USB memory sticks are unmounted efter a few seconds.
Anybody else with this major problem?

I have the same problem, although mine has not been solved by ESET update, finder settings, PRAM & SMC resets or anything else.
Don't get it, my external hard drive still works on both my housemates computers - one macbook pro (with snow leopard) and one dell, just not on mine with mountain lion.
    Any ideas for me guys?

  • Can an intel iMac run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive?

Hi can anyone please tell me if it is possible to run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive on an Intel iMac running OSX 10.5 Leopard or later?
Or is it possible to partition the intel iMac's hard drive and add Tiger?
At the moment I am running Tiger on a partitioned hard drive shared with OSX Leopard and wish to upgrade to an intel Mac. I need tiger to run some software not compatible with newer Macs and also to access OS9 Classic. Thanx for your help.

IF you upgraded from Panther as you know you do not have an Intel based iMac. I beleive the limit of your upgrades on your current machine is going to be Leopard. The system requirements for Snow Leopard are:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply
This is straight from Apple so yes if you want to go beyond Leopard then you must purchase a new machine. My suggestion would be to begin replacing your legacy apps, you are extremely far behind and the longer you wait the more painful it will be to get current.
    Good luck.

  • Cannot see hard drives on airport extreme

Recently I cannot see hard drives on the network that are connected through Airport Extreme . The airport Extreme can see the drives, but the network cannot. I have not changed any settings that I know of. Only a reset of my macbook pro running Mavericks allows me to gives me access to the drives. Airport utility 6.3.2

+I will check when I get home. How do I do that?+
Connect the drive directly to a USB port on your Mac.
Then open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on the drive in left hand panel and look for information at the bottom of the window about the disk
Your drive may be formatted as Windows NFTS. If that's the case, you will need to reformat the drive to work at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme. Be sure to copy any data that you need to another drive (maybe twice to be sure) before you do this as the reformat will erase all data on the drive.
When you are ready, click the Erase tab and then select MS-DOS (FAT) as the format so both PCs and Macs will be able to read the files.
Then copy a small test file back over to the FAT drive and plug the drive into the USB port on the AirPort Extreme. Restart everything on your network starting with the modem first, then device attached to the modem, etc.
On you Mac, open Macintosh HD and check to see if your AirPort Extreme icon appears under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window. If so, click the icon and folder will appear to the right representing your drive. Double click this folder to reveal the contents and mount the drive on your desktop. You should see your test file. Make sure it is operable..music plays, video works, etc.
Sorry, I haven't used Windows in 3-4 years and cannot remember how to access drives, but I would start with My Computer and start poking around. You want to verify that your PC can access and play the files as well.
If everything is OK,you can copy all your backup files back onto the USB drive attached to the AirPort Extreme. Keep the extra backup copy handy for awhile, just in case as well.

  • Mac Doesn't See External Drives on WinPC, PC Doesn't See Mac

I'm trying to transfer some files that are on an external drive connected to a Windows PC to my new Mac Pro.
On the Mac, in Finder, I can see the PC, but I can only see it's internal Hard Drive; the external drive don't show up in Finder.
On the PC, I'm not seeing the Mac Pro at all. In Tiger, it seems to me, there was check box under the "sharing" preferences for "Windows sharing," but I can't find that in Leopard. So, the PC doesn't see the Mac at all.
It does suddenly dawn on me that I could just detach the external drive that I'm trying to copy from the PC and plug it into the Mac, but... that would be too easy. I would still like, at least, to be able to see the Mac from the PC.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    --PS

My recommendation is to format the drive as FAT32 via OSX's Disk Utility, this will allow you to read/write from both the Mac and PC environment.
Like I said, I don't think that's the issue, because my MacBook shares everything with the PC just fine (except the externals on the PC). And of course, I don't want to reformat the external drives until I've got the data off of them.
I just checked, and Tiger has a "Windows sharing" checkbox under the "Sharing Preferences" that allows the MacBook to show up in "My Network Places" on the PC. The problem I'm having is getting the MacPro to show up on the PC; the Pro has Leopard, and there's no "Windows Sharing" in Leopard that I can see.
    Thanks again,
    --PS
