Tiger/FCE compadibility problem?

When I attempt to capture from a deck or camera the intire project closes when I click Capture in the pull down menu. As long as I am working within a project there are no problems. I am useing FCE 2. Is there a compadiblity problem?

  • Tiger/Panther install problems - won't boot from Tiger DVD or Panther CD

    My Mum has an iMac G3 CRT, running at 500MHz, with 1GB RAM, a 20GB HD, & a slot-loading internal CD-RW.
The iMac in question is the model described here: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac500indigo.html
She only uses the machine for email & web browsing, but because it runs OS 9, it won't run a modern web browser (it's stuck on Internet Explorer 5.1.7) so lots of websites don't load properly or work at all. This is fair enough as IE for the Mac hasn't been updated since 2001.
My idea was to upgrade the machine from OS 9.2.2 to (ideally) 10.4.11, or failing that, 10.3.9, which would then let her use the current version of Safari, or possibly even Firefox. (Any thoughts on which would be easier for a currently IE-using technically-challenged pensioner would be welcome, although I prefer Safari myself, despite its shortcomings).
The iMac only had it's original 128MB of RAM until recently, but I persuaded her that it would be a good idea to spend 70-odd Pounds on 1GB of RAM so that OS X could not only be installed (which would let a modern browser be used) but would run at a useable speed. The minimum requirement for Panther is 128MB of RAM, but I suspected that it would run like treacle on a 128MB G3, and I was hoping to go for Tiger anyway, which requires 256MB.
As Tiger comes on a DVD (I have the retail/generic version) and the iMac has no DVD drive, I borrowed a friends external LaCie FireWire DVD-RW drive (the Porsche styled one). The DVD mounted first time, and the Startup Disk control panel let me select it.
When I restarted, I got the initial OS X pale grey screen with the dark grey Apple logo in the centre, with the spinning circle thing below, but after a minute or so, I could hear the DVD stop spinning in the drive, and a few seconds later the dark grey Apple logo changed into a dark grey "circle with a line through it" logo, with the normal circle thing still spinning below. This is how things stayed for many minutes, so I just restarted with the external drive off, and eventually got back to a normal 9.2.2 boot-up.
Next I tried running the "Mac OS X Install" application on the Tiger DVD from within 9.2.2. This started and came up with a big Tiger logo screen with a button labelled "Restart". Clicking it brought up an OS 9 error dialogue though, which said something along the lines of "the Tiger DVD cannot be selected as the startup disk" with a number 2 in brackets at the end of the error message - like this: (2)
This error occurs both if I select the Tiger DVD in the Startup Disk control panel prior to running the "Mac OS X Install" application, or if I select the internal hard disk. I know the DVD isn't faulty, as I used it to successfully boot my own Mac (a Power Mac G4 Mirror Drive Doors) just the other day, in order to repair permissions on the startup disk.
At this point I gave up on Tiger and tried to use the first of 3 Panther CDs that I have. These 3 CDs are burnt copies that came with my own Mac and contain version 10.3.2.
The CD refused to be selectable in the Startup Disk control panel. It's icon was greyed out, and so I couldn't boot from it. I tried running the "Install Mac OS X" application on the CD from within OS 9, but got the same error with the 2 in brackets when I clicked the "Restart" button, just like with the Tiger DVD.
Initially, I suspected that these Panther discs might be machine-specific, rather than the retail/generic version, because of the first CD being greyed-out in the Startup Disk control panel, but then the error dialogue that matched the one I got when I tried the Tiger DVD makes me think that my Panther CDs might be generic after all. Examining the first CD on my own Mac, it appears to be generic, but I'm not 100% sure, as the CDs are copies and as such don't have the usual identifying information on the labels. There are no machine-specific files that I can find on the first CD, which is dated January 9th 2004.
Various websites mention that when Tiger was current, Apple would swap a retail copy of the DVD for a set of CDs. I've looked on eBay but not been able to find any. This doesn't surprise me though, as there will be very few copies of Tiger on CD out there, and even fewer copies that people would want to sell.
There are a few retail copies of Panther available on CD, but if my current burnt copies of these discs are in fact generic, then buying a new set would make no difference. Besides, I'd prefer to use Tiger.
The Tiger minimum requirements (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514) say:
"To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs: DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation"
What it doesn't say though, is whether the DVD drive has to be an internal one with Apple firmware/modifications, or whether an external 3rd party one will do. However, I know from various websites that it's possible to load Tiger onto this sort of Mac, and sometimes even older non-FireWire Macs, despite what the minimum system requirements say.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd be much obliged!
    Thanks.

The problem is now solved, but I'm not sure how I managed it, unfortunately.
Having read the article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75430, I checked both my Tiger DVD and my first Panther CD, and neither had the firmware updater on them, despite what the article said, so I downloaded it. However I was sure I'd applied a firmware update to the iMac a long time ago, and the 4.1.9 version number seemed familiar.
When I checked, I had in fact already applied the firmware update a few years ago!
I tried running the "Mac OS X Install" application on the Tiger DVD from within 9.2.2 again, and got the same error message as before. I was wrong about the error code though. It was minus 2 in brackets, not 2 in brackets.
The full text of the error message is:
    An error occurred.
"Startup Disk was unable to select the
install CD as the startup disk. (-2)"
I tried selecting the DVD manually in the Startup Disk control panel (as before) and running the application again gave the same error message (also as before).
I then went into Extensions Manager to see if there was anything there that might be interfering with things. The only thing that caught my eye was the LaCie SilverLining control panel (which I think was version 6.4.5a). This was something that originally came on a floppy disk accompanying an external hard drive that I used to use years ago at a place I worked, and I used to find it invaluable back in the OS 9 G1 Power Mac magneto-optical external drive days!
I couldn't remember what it was doing on the iMac, but I switched it off, and then clicked "Restart", hoping that when I rebooted (in OS 9) the error message wouldn't come up when I ran the "Mac OS X Install" application.
However, I'd forgotten that I'd switched the Startup Disk control panel to the DVD, so when the iMac restarted, the initial OS X dark grey Apple logo screen appeared, and I expected the dark grey "circle with a line through it" logo to appear shortly afterwards, but it didn't! The iMac booted up from the DVD, which then let me install Tiger! I was then able to apply the 10.4.11 update, plus all the others that Software Update provided. About half a dozen restarts and several hours later, the iMac is now fully updated & configured, favourites are copied over to Safari 3.1.2, and all I have to do is teach my Mum how to use the OS X Finder, Mail & Safari, as opposed to the OS 9 Finder, Outlook Express & Internet Explorer...
Switching off the SilverLining control panel seemed to do the trick, but since the iMac then rebooted from the DVD, not the internal hard disk, I don't see how it could have possibly had any bearing on things! Very weird!
Anyway, thanks to Allan Jones & spudnuty for their advice. All's well that ends well!

  • Tiger upgrade installation problems

I have a G4 Quicksilver currently on 10.3.9. Bought an upgrade from Allmac on CD. Disc 1 & 2 loaded ok. As the Canon Printer Drivers were loading on Disc 3, got a "installation was unsuccessful, please try again" message. It said to reload Disc 2, which I did, then had the same problem loading Disc 3. I checked the log, and saw a" BomFilEerror 5: input/output error.Install failed: Some CanonPrinterDrivers may not have been written correctly " At this point I am stuck, can't go forward, screen is frozen.
Should I quit the installer, and if so, how ? Suggestions ? Need help from you experts !

Were the disks you bought machine specific disks? You need a retail version of Tiger. Black disk with a gray 'X'.

  • Does Tiger present Classic problems not found in Panther?

I have been running various old OS9 apps via Classic under 10.3.6 without any apparent problems.
I may now need to run them on a laptop with Classic under 10.4.
I have heard that some problems are presented with certain Classic apps in Tiger that are OK in Panther. Is this the case? If so does anyone know which apps are problematic in Tiger?
I would be particularly concerned about Adobe Photoshop 5.0 LE.
    Thanks,

    Barbara,
I'm resurrecting this thread because of an associated problem, albeit not to do with Classic but with OSX.
The point isn't so much 'what doesn't it do?' as does it give me anything I need. However I downloaded the Earthbound Light effects and used Curves from there in PSE2 without problems in OS9 (although nowhere near as conveniently as in PSLE5).
But moving to OS 10.4 has presented a problem in that the Earthbound Light folder shows up in the Effects tab, but there is nothing in it. I have given full details in a question in the Adobe Forums at http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc1e270 and would be grateful if you could spare the time to look at it.

  • Fce application problems...

as soon as i click on the timeline, browser, canvas etc. the entire page goes black!
i've gone to the plist and deleted all the fce info then reloaded the fce software yet the same problem exists.
any suggestions on how to remedy this situation would be appreciated...

thanks for your suggestion tom. the apple guy said something about having too many preferences or something like that.
now i have a new question...
why do my audio tracks become 'seperated'?? one is on a1 and the other is on a4... how do i get them back so they're on a1 and a2??
    also,
i'm using an external firewire drive. i have very little to nothing saved to it yet i'm getting a message that i need to free up disk space. am i wrong in presuming disk space is referring to the external drive? regardless, how do i free up disk space??

  • Frustrating FCE HD problem

I am having a major issue with FCE. I have a NTSC project started that I opened and saved multiple times with no issue. I have my capture scratch on a LaCie 500gb firewire 800 external. FCE HD now quits every time I try to open it. I get the unexpectedly quit box. FCE will open if I don't have the LaCie connected, but then all the clips are offline. I tried to reconnect, but it appears I have to do it one clip at a time, there has to be a better way.
Once upon a time, I had the enexpectedly quit error and solved it with regestering soundtrack (found that tip on here), but apparently that is not the case right now as soundtrack opens fine.
I have also tried trashing prefs and deleting the program and reinstalling from scratch. I can not seem to open that project with the LaCie connected.
Please does anyone see my problem standing out to them.
    John

Ok, so I tried to delete the preferences the way you referenced, no change.
I deleted the way you referenced and re-installed. FCE opens no problem. I can open another project with no problem (just missing the render files cause i deleted the FCE documents folders.
I go to open the project that was giving me the problems, and it quits at 17% of the project loaded.
I am assuming I have some sort of corupted project folder. Is there anything I can do to keep from starting over? This project has been frustrating me as it is, without having to re-import all the files and start the sequences over.
And also, how to keep this from happening in the future.

  • FCE 4 Problem: Color bar thru the Viewer

I just upgraded to FCE4 and have found two annoyances already....
1)I get a horizontal color bar running thru the middle of the image in the viewer. It's mostly an aqua color but there are shades of other colors in it (which vary from image to image). Is this some sort of new feature or is something wrong here. I sure can't see (or imagine) any purpose to it. I did two installs -- on an iMac and a MacBook Pro -- and the problem is only showing up on the iMac.
    2) The controls seem very different... In 3.5 you could right click on a clip to cut it from the timeline. Can't do that now. Are the controls really that different from 3.0 & 3.5, or is this another glitch?
As long as I'm asking questions... Anyone got a good text/manual to recommend? It's feeling like I need to re-learn how to use FCE. I wouldn't have expected an upgrade to be so different from the earlier version (eg, right clicking to cut and paste clips should have stayed unchanged, in my book).
Thanks for any help you care to offer..

    Tom,
Thanks for your response. Here's a screenshot...
    http://bp3.blogger.com/_GjFJqLYOsHk/SFkdJVij1wI/AAAAAAAAAB4/THLT-fZ41v4/s1600-h/ Picture+1.png
I've also deleted FCE4 from the HD (also deleting the plist file and the project file) and reinstalled it; after importing the same files, I get the same result. Other things I've noticed...
    1) If I import the same files into FCE4 on my MacBookPro I have no problem.
    2) Once I drop the file from the Viewer onto the timeline, and then re-open it in th Viewer from the timeline, the color bar is gone.
    3) The color bar is not showing up in the Canvas or the icons on the Timeline.
    4) If I import the same files into FCE 3.5.1, I have no problem. (BTW, I'm back to using 3.5.1 until I receive my copy of your book.)
So the imported files are not corrupt; the problem is somewhere else. Or maybe I'm just missing something obvious (well, it'd have to be less than obvious).
Thanks for any thoughts you may have,
    Seismo

  • FCE Transition Problems

randomly FCE will not allow me to add in transitions longer than 1 frame. I add one (any available transition), and it puts it in as 1 frame and won't allow me to change it (the normal default is 1 second). I checked to see if it is clip duration causing the problem, but they are plenty long for a 1 sec trans. In the past when this happened to one of my students, restarting the computer without saving seemed to work. Currently I have 2 students each experiencing that problem, and restarting did no help.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
    FCE handles transition this way:

  • Tiger Mail Transfer Problem to Leopard Mail

Using Tiger I was able to transfer my Mail account details (folders, e-mails, preferences, etc) to a secondary computer by simply copying the (home/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist) and (home/library/Mail folder) and it everything was exactly the same. Now that I have upgraded to Leopard, this is no longer possible. I am currently using Tiger Mail as my primary software and want to know if there is a way to export these settings to the Leopard Mail software?

You can copy mail preference file
    ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
from the old to the new Mac without any problem.
If copying the old Mail folder into ~/Library/ doesn't work, copy that folder on the desktop. Open Mail, select import mailbox then Mail for OSX, choose the path ~/Desktop/Mail wait until the process is finished.

  • FCE exporting problem

    hello,
I have a 16 minute movie that I want to export but whenever I do (either way: export to quicktime movie or using quicktime conversion) the audio becomes terribly out of sync.
I have figured the problem is NOT the audio. when I placed in-out points and went to export I noticed that when I select export, the position of the video in-point changes because the viewer shows a different image. Also, a red render bar on the topmost bar on the timeline comes up over the entire movie.
The strange part is that when I re-import the video and don't cut/edit or do anything to it, and export that, the export plays perfectly fine. But, in order for the movie to be finished I have to edit some parts. It's only when i edit it does the problem start. it still plays fine on the timeline but not in the export.
Sorry for so many problems and hope you can help.
    What can be the problem?
    Specs of my computer:
    MacBook Pro
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.5.6
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Final Cut Express 4
    Quicktime Version 7.6.0
    Thanks,

    Thanks for the quick reply.
Ok here's what the media is. it was captured and edited in FCE from a minidv tape. I exported it using QT conversion to .mov and placed effects onto it in a program called EffectsLab Pro (fxhome.com) and re-exported out to .mov. EffectsLab doesn't work with the sound of a project so I imported it back into FCE and added the sound. Everything plays fine inside FCE but once I do the final touches to the video and export that, the .mov QT file is not in sync. it's as if some frames were deleted from the beginning and end.

  • Tiger DHCP/Ethernet Problem :(

I'm staying in a hotel which offers free (ethernet based) broadband. The connection works througha D-Link 502-G dsl modem, and is routed through a Linksys router. All the other computers onthe network (iMac, iBooks) work fine. All are running Panther (10.3.0). I am using a G4 Powerbook running Tiger (10.4.3), but cannot get a DHCP address. Every time, the Mac self-assigns a local IP address (169.254.x.y). I have used several different cables, restarted teh Linksys Router to no avail. disabled PPoE, turned firewall off tried manually entering an IP address, subnet mask and router address...
Nothing! And yet when I plug the iBook (not mine) running 10.3 back in, it immediately gets a DHCP address in teh 10.1.x.y range and works perfectly.
This is the first time I've had problems with any hard-wired (or wireless network) adn I'm now at a loss. Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks

    Try this:
Remove the Ethernet cable from the computer. Open
Network preferences and select Airport then click on
the Configure button. Click on the built-in Ethernet
tab. Click on the TCP/IP tab. Set the Configure
IPv4 to Manually and click on the Apply button. Then
reset Configure IPv4 to DHCP and click on the Apply
button. Nothing should be set for PPoE. AppleTalk
should be OFF and no proxies configured. Quit
Network and shut down the computer. Assuming the
local router/gateway is configured and working
connect the Ethernet cable from the router/gateway to
the computer. Now turn on the computer. See if you
now get a proper IP address.
If you continue having problems try the following as
    well:
    1. In Network preferences turn off IPv6 (click on the
IPv6 button in the TCP/IP panel and select Off from
    the drop down menu.)
    2. Trash the
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.
    plist file and the
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder.
    Restart and reconfigure Network preferences.
Thanks for this... unfortunately neither has worked. Resetting TCP/IP IPv4 to Manually and back to DHCP and restarting gives me teh same local IP address (169.254.x.y)
Turning off IPv6 and trashing the files/folder you suggested, I get no DHCP address (not even a self-assigned address), System did not create a new SystemConfiguartion folder, so I as forced to restore it (having kept a copy) - I'm now back to where I started.
I did think for a moment that my Ethernet port was dead, but I can ping and access 10.1.1.1 (which is the d-Link DSL modem) so it can't be that
    Anyone any otehr ideas?

  • Just installed Tiger and having problems

I just installed 10.4.3 with an Archive and Install. Since then I have had a host of problems and tried a variety of fixes. Some have worked yet in general the machine freezes or slows down to an incredibly slow pace. And then I have to restart.
    What I have done:
    Initial Archive and Install
    * Office 2004 products not working, restart cpu, get blue screen
    * Start up in Safe mode and get rid of MIcrosoft Office Database Daemon in Start-up Items
    * Computer restarts but still sluggish have to Force Quit
    Other problems:
    Printing to Epson Printer
    * Get a message "the printer "(null)" could not be found in your list of printers.
    I don't have a printer "(null)"
FYI - I am printing via Airport and have added the printer to the list and picked the driver.
I switched to Mail and ical because of the Entourage problems.
    * Mail seems slow and when I am loading a simple no attachment message, I get a spinning wheel.
    * Mail Help window has disappeared.
    Safari/Firefox
    * Slower loading than 10.3.9. Spinning Wheel.
    What I have tried:
    * Fixed permissions
    * Booted from the Tiger disk and repaired the disk. No repairs were done.
Each of these steps solved the problems immediately but as soon as I start multitasking between mail, Office 2004, Safari everything is slow and often ends up Force Quitting at least on program.
    What would you do next?
    1. Should I reinstall 10.4.3 from the disk with a Basic install? And then upgrade to 10.4.6 to see if that will fix my problems?
    2. Or should I do an Erase and Install? (which I am trying to avoid?)
The majority my work is done in email and Office products. Thanks in advance for any help or advice that will get me out of this quandary.

  • Tiger and VLAN problem

I bought a new MacBook Pro a few weeks ago. It is working well in my house. But I tried to connect this macbook to our company's intranet in my office, it's network performance is extremely low. So, I gather some tcpdump data and I found that the VLAN tag is coming into my macbook (such as 713, 709 as vlan id). My company uses the IP phone and support guys said that VLAN tag behaviour is normal thing. Actually, in windows system, there was no problem.
I found the increasing Input error count in output of netstat -in output also. I think, this increasing input error count is related to VLAN tag.
I looked into the tcpdump output and sometimes there is no VLAN tag in the packet from switch, and then, those packets seem to be permitted because the packet flow shows that tiger sent legal next packet, not retransmission.
So, I think I have two options to bypass this situation...
    1. If possible, strip off VLAN tags regardless of VLAN id because vlan id is not important in this case. But I have no idea how to do it.
    2. If possible, give the VLAN ID to my ethernet adapter such as 709, 713 etc. Also, I don't know how to do it.
Can anybody help me? Thanks in advance...

TinkerTool (free) can make invisible files visible: click on 'Finder' in the toolbar and then check 'Show hidden and system files' and click the button to relaunch the Finder. /usr and /var at at the root level of your hard disk, if I remember correctly.
*Warning: be very careful*. Do not delete or tamper with any file unless you are quite clear what it is. Deleting the wrong file could seriously damage your System.
When you have finished, be sure to uncheck that checkbox and relaunch the Finder again to hide the invisible files.

  • Importing from Imovie 08 to FCE 4 - problems

    Hi
Why cant I import projects from Imovie 08 into FCE 4. According to the manuel it should be possible. All I get is a "File error, wrong type" ????
    The manuel:
    To open an iMovie project:
1 In Final Cut Express, choose File > Open.
2 In the dialog that appears, select the iMovie project you want to open.
The iMovie project opens in the Browser and contains the sequence and the clips as
they appeared in the iMovie Clips pane.
Important: Final Cut Express does not import iMovie sound effects, audio levels, or
transitions. All other applied effects are imported.
3 Double-click the sequence to open the iMovie project in the Timeline.
    4 Render the sequence.

  • Imac late 2006 install tiger 10.4 problem.

Hi, would appreacite if someone can help me here.
One day the mac would not restart, booted from disk and disk utility would not let me repair disk, invalid node structure. Erase disk and had repaired ok.
However, everytime time I reload the OS and upgrade to 10.4.11 the install locks up and will not finish restart again and get the the same invalid node structure message. did this several times. The clean install takes list 6-8 hours is this correct?
My son need the mac for school so I got him a new one. So I have this useless mac which I would like to fix and use myself. Will install 3 gb memomry and new harddrive. Did show research here and it should not be a problem.
However, after reading alot of issues with the late 2006 Imacs. I am totally confused of what is the problem. My son had issues with the mac freezing all the time before, till one day it totally would not load the OS. I did a hardware check and it reports no problems.
    Is it the motherboard?
    is it the vidio card?
    memory?
    or the hard drive?
I would be nice to get this to work.
    thanks
