TIGER FIREWALL

FELLOW LOGICIANS!!
I used to just use my MAC for music. No internet connection, no games, no ****, nothing. But after realizing how handy it is to have my MAC plugged into the matrix, i'd like to what's the best firewall to use for TIGER....just 2 b on the safe side

Use the built-in firewall. You really don't need anything else. If you need some additional control you can always control the built-in firewall from command line. Just type "man ipfw" on the command prompt to get some instructions. You could read this if you'd like to learn more:
Quoting the article:
All Unix systems have a firewall. But on the Mac, it's installed by default and you can't turn it off. To keep things simple, and keep users from having to build their own firewall rules, OS X packages the firewall as a sub-menu of Sharing within System Preferences. The benefit of this approach is that the firewall can be tied to services. Turn on Personal Web Sharing, for example, and a new rule appears in the firewall to control access to the service.

  • Third-party firewall? What third-party firewall?

I was setting up Internet Sharing so I could use my G5 as a base station, and my remote system wasn't getting to the Internet; while it saw and connected to the AirPort network, it couldn't seem to get a valid DHCP lease (the IP address was self-assigned, 169.254.x.x). Personal Web Sharing is checked in the Firewall tab of Sharing prefs.
As an experiment, I turned off the firewall in the G5, and my remote system got a DHCP lease. I then went to turn the firewall back on (to see what would happen), but instead encountered a message telling me that I couldn't due to the presence of a third-party firewall, and at this time, the Tiger firewall is "unavailable".
As far as I know, I have no third-party firewall installed. Is there some way I can identify and disable this mystery firewall? I am Terminal-friendly.
This is the only thing I can think of. I have Virtual PC 7 running a copy of Windows 2000 so I can use my company's pathologically-locked-down VPN connection. The software they gave me installed a firewall, this was inside my W2K "virtual PC" and I can't imagine how it's affecting my Mac OS. I have tried shutting the virtual PC down and quitting VPC but I get the same error. Nonetheless I wanted to mention it.
    TIA,

Enter the following into the Terminal:
    sudo ipfw flush
or drag the item /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist to the desktop followed by restarting the computer. Both steps may need to be followed.

  • Configuring Mac OS X Firewall for iChat

I understand that one must configure the firewall in Mac OS X Tiger before using iChat. It is a mystery to me that Apple does not provide a pre-configured Firewall rule for iChat AV that the user can easily just turn on or off. (Apple does have a pre-configured rule for iChat Bonjour).
There is a How-To article on Apple's web site (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208 ) but this article appears to be out of date. The article tells you to open up certain ports but it does not tell you whether the ports are TCP or UDP.
From what I am been able to figure out, one needs to open up the following ports in the Mac OS X Firewall for iChat to work:
    TCP Ports -- 5190, 5297, 5298
    UDP Ports -- 5060, 5190, 5676, 16384-16403
Is this correct? Do I need to open up these ports in the Mac OS X Tiger Firewall before I can get iChat AV to work?
(I prefer not to open uo any unnecessary ports).
    RobK

By default the Mac OS X firewall doesn't block UDP traffic. So unless you have clicked on the "Advanced" button in your firewall settings and told the firewall to block UDP you don't need to bother with the UDP ports (and indeed, including them in your firewall rule they wont even be used).
There is absolutely no need whatsoever to open up TCP ports 5222 or 5223.
While ports 5222 and 5223 are used by XMPP/Jabber SERVERS iChat doesn't receive inbound connections on those ports. iChat will make an outbound connection on a random high port (mine's currently using port 54804 to connect to Google Talk on port 5223) and there's no need for a firewall rule for these (and it's impossible to predict what port iChat will use anyway).
Port 5190 (TCP) is used for AIM server connection. Just like above iChat will use a random high port to connect to the AIM server on this port so this does not need to be opened.
Port 5190 (UDP) is used for AIM file transfers i believe. It may be that iChat also uses it for XMPP/Jabber and Bonjour file transfers too (though i suspect not since the Bonjour firewall rule doesn't open up this port). If you haven't blocked UDP traffic you wont need to open this port.
Port 5220. As far as i know this port has nothing to do with XMPP/Jabber. The only thing i can think of is that perhaps iChat uses it as a custom file transfer port (though since Bonjour is just serverless XMPP/Jabber and this port isn't opened the Bonjour rule i suspect not). There is probably no need to open this port.
Port 5298. I believe this is used for message exchange via Bonjour. If you're not planning on using Bonjour you shouldn't need to open it.
Anyway, after this long rambling post the conclusion is:
So long as you haven't blocked UDP traffic in the Advanced section of your Mac OS X firewall you shouldn't need to open up any ports for iChat to work (on your Mac anyway. Gateway/router is another story).
If you have blocked UDP you will need to open the following:
    UDP: 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5353, 5678, 16384-16403
No TCP ports should need to be opened.
Forwarding the above UDP ports to your machine on your gateway or router should enable things to work perfectly.

  • Firewall stops ichat from working

I have 2 macs, MacBook and MacBook Pro, both are running leopard.
With the firewall set to "Set access for specific services and applications", for either mac, ichat becomes unreliable.
While chatting via bonjour it frequently drops the connection. It does this by telling one party the other has logged out and telling the other party there has been a connection error. Which party receives which response seems to be random.
Video chat and screen sharing don't work at all, sometimes the request is receive but after accepting says there has been a communication error, other times the request is simply never received by the other party.
Both macs have ichat and ichatagent set to "Allow incoming connections" in the firewall pane.
    Anyone have similar problems?
With the firewall set to "Allow all incoming connections" on both macs everything works fine, but I'd rather not have to do that.

The new firewall is built new from the ground up. I'm still deciding whether this was a good idea, but by and large it simply doesn't work the same way as any of the previous firewalls that were based on the bulletproof IPFW. If you're having issues with the new firewall and want to revert to the older Tiger firewall, it's easy, download the free WaterRoof (http://www.hanynet.com/waterroof/) It's a frontend for IPFW, which is still installed on Leopard. Turn off the new leopard firewall, and use waterroof to set up IPFW the way you want it - instead of working on an application basis (which seems to be unpredictable) IPFW works on the usual port basis, which seems to be much more predictable.

  • How does this new Firewall work?

I've upgraded from Tiger to Leopard, but I just don't understand the new firewall.
Does anyone know what the correct settings should be? Is it wise to 'allow all connections'? Does this mean the firewall is off?
Really confused by this, I wish they left the firewall alone, the Tiger version was much easier to configure.

I think I'll wait until 10.5.1 and see what Apple do about this ridiculous firewall.

  • Firewall manipulation

How can I enable the firewall on a 10.4 client machine via the command-line ? Where are the default rules stored? Thanks.

    Hi Mihalis,
Ah! Now I see where you've been hiding. Well, you can't keep it all to yourself no mo'. (silly jokes, of course) I didn't know about this topic. It seems that you discuss some interesting issues over here.
    Hi Trent,
You'll be glad to know that it doesn't matter what you do in the Firewall tab of the Sharing System PrefPane. If you have your own rules in place, Apple's Firewall mechanism will refuse to interfere. When I click on the Firewall tab I get a warning sheet saying, "Other firewall software is running on your computer" and it will refuse to interfere. (all buttons are "grayed-out") Thus if you implement your own firewall, Apple's software will respect your choice.
I highly recommend doing your own firewall. Apple's firewall mechanism is impressive but it's not possible for it to be aware of your network topology and special needs. Thus if you're knowledgeable, you can generally do better than Apple's generic rules. However, study is recommended. One of my first encounters with single user mode was the consequence of a stupid attempt at personally configuring my firewall.
Here are some links to pages that will help you implement your own firewall configuration. First, the FreeBSD manual:
    FreeBSD Handbook:Chapter 24 Firewalls
    Then the O'Reilly ONLamp articles:

    http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2001/06/21/FreeBSD_Basics.html
The following site discusses Mac firewall products.
    http://seaotter.berkeley.edu/cab/mac-firewalls/
More important, the above page has a link to an archive of Stefan Arentz's article, formerly at http://wopr.norad.org/articles/firewall/, that is specific to OS X. Unfortunately that archive no longer exists but I have the article myself. If I can get Stefan's permission, I may publish it myself.
I keep my rules in a script that is executed at boot by a StartupItem. Postings on "the other UNIX discussion" suggest that launchd wouldn't be appropriate for this task. I've put my StartupItem and a select subset of my rules on the web at firewall.tgz. Hopefully the rules and script will give you an idea of some of the things you can do. I haven't updated that posting in a while though so I recommend testing before using it. I don't know the status of the Tiger firewall bug but when Tiger was first released, dynamic rules caused a multiprocessor machine to eventually freeze.

  • How to enable ftp backups using Retrospect over firewall

Retrospect is currently only capable of active, NOT passive ftp, so when one enables the 10.4 firewall, it blocks Retrospect's ftp connections to my NAS. Opening tcp 20-21 doesn't seem to help.
Has anyone succeeded in getting Retrospect 6 to work with the Tiger firewall in 10.4.3?

Apologies, I've been away for a while. I personally do not use the OS X firewall (I use the Norton one), however if the normal GUI does not seem to give you the flexibility you require you can look at other tools that manipulate the ipfw rules - such as Brickhouse.

  • Rend:Error when attempting to send images

I'm using iChat 4.0.2, communicating with my friend running 3.1.8.
When I try to send him an image through direct connect, he receives this message:
"An undefined AIM error has occurred. The server message was: Rend:Error"
On my end, things look fine. Any idea what might be going on here?
    Thanks in advance!

It sounds like he has not got port 5190 open on the UDP protocol that iChat uses for File Sending/Direct Chats
This needs to be allowed in the Tiger Firewall if it is On and in any routing device that specifies ports.
Sometimes you need to delete com.apple.ichat.plist and restart iChat to sort this.

  • Opening ports for ichat and gaming...

    Hi folks,
When I try to connect to a friend (she's on an Imac) with Ichat or she tries to connect to me (via webcam) we always get the refused error. Also When we try to play Star Wars Battlefront, we can't connect to eachother's computer.
I haven't turned the Tiger Firewall on, so I know the problem is with my Modem, The Speedtouch 530.
I think it has like an internal firewall, so how do I open these ports and what do I need to change in the modem's settings?
I did set the connection type to PPPoe in the Tiger Network setting.
    thx.

    Hi Tim,
Did your modem come with a manual? There may be some procedures outlined in the manual.
    Or google.
    http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Thomson-Alcatel/Speed Touch530/SpeedTouch530index.htm
This looks like a lot of good help screens for your modem.

  • Did not answer and changed nothing!

    Hi!
This really is strange. I used to be able to connect to the appletest servers perfectly. Also video chatted with my dad last week without a problem. And I changed nothing on my side. Suddenly I get the error hat I supposedly did not answer. when trying to initiate a chat and/or being invited.
My Router Firewall still is off - my Tiger firewall is on still with the ichat ports. Opening that and rebooting does not do anything either. Any clues?
Hope next week we will get an update...

    Just in and Solved!
My router somehow (how I do not know....) activated the firewall again And boom - everything closed!
I deactivated it and now video works again! Now I will see to portforwarding...
So for everyone: Doublecheck everything! Even if you think it was off or on....
    good luck!

  • WRT54GC - problems with eMac on network

I just got the WRT54GC router, and I'm using several computers on my home network:
    router - 192.168.1.1
    eMac - static IP - 192.168.1.7 - wired
    WinXP 1 - DHCP - 192.168.1.102 - wired
    WinXP 2 - DHCP - 192.168.1.103 - wireless
    Win2k 1 - static IP - 192.168.1.4 - wireless
    Win2k 2 - DHCP - 192.168.1.105 - wireless
The problem I'm having is with the eMac. It can ping the router, it can ping the WinXP 1 wired machine, but it can't ping any of the wireless machines. Likewise, none of the wireless machines can ping the eMac. However, if I load up iTunes on a wireless machine, it can see that there is a music share available, but it gets an error when it tries connecting to the share. I can access the eMac's music share from the WinXP1 wired machine, no problem.
I've tried pinging machines from the router, as well, and the router can ping every machine on the network without a problem.
So it seems to me like something is blocking the access between the eMac and all the wireless machines on the network. The WinXP 1 wired machine can access all the wireless machines, it's just the eMac that's having the problem. I've made sure the OSX Tiger firewall is turned off.
The firmware version on this router is 1.02.5.
    Any ideas?

    Try swapping the cables around.
Try switching the ports each computer is plugged into.
If the Mac is plugged into port 1 on the router, make sure DMZ is turned off.

    Hi,
There are two Articles as Apple Calls them now.
This one was written for iChat 2 (Panther) and updated for iChat 3 (Tiger) when Jabber was added
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1507
It lists all the ports iChat 3 uses for AIM, Jabber, Bonjour and A/V chats.
This one http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2282 Lists the changes regarding the A/V stuff
So what we have is iChat Logging into AIM on port 5190 using TCP as default.
This port is used on the UDP Protocol to Send files or pic (Includes Pics in Chats) and Direct IMs (Same but without pics or files)
Bonjour iChat requires that ports 5297, 5298 and 5353 are open to the UDP Protocol and port 5298 also needs to be open to the TCP Protocol.
Jabber uses three ports all on TCP 5220, 5222, 5223
This is for Login and sending IMs and files
    iChat 3 A/V Chats use 22 ports
5678 on UDP for the Visible Invite
5060 on UDP for the SIP (Behind the scenes connection/invite process)
4 of 16384-16403 in a one to one chat.
iChat 4 reduces this to 11 ports.
    5678 for Visible invite
    16402 for the SIP bit
Staying with just one port from 16393-16402 starting at the top as first choice.
Undocumented in iChat 4 is the Screen Sharing port.
Testing has revealed this to a random port. (There is also an Audio chat along side this Screen Share).
The Mac Firewall in Leopard Certificates Apps to allow them through the Firewall so you don't have to enter ports there.
Set of pics for iChat 3 in Tiger Firewall
Modems that route and routers can have several means or methods of opening the ports.
Port Forwarding will need all 29 (or 19 ) ports opened and pointed in most cases to One IP (Computer)
UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) hands control to the App to open ports (much like the Leopard firewall)
Some Devices can have Port Triggering as well
This allows multiple computers but needs some set up for iChat to set the port 5678 as the Listening ports to open all the other A/V ports.

  • Problems Sending Invite but I can Receive Invite

I am using a new macbook with 4gb of ram under 10.5.2
I am trying to invite my mom to video chat with my 1 yr old son.
It seems when I invite her to video chat we are never able to connect.
    I get a -8 error and she gets a -4 error.
The funny or not so funy thing is when she invites me we connect just fine.
My mom is also rnning a macbook with 1gb ram but using 10.4.10.
Wondering If somene can help me out.
Tried changing ichat bandwidth limit from none to 500 and the QT streaming to 1.5.
When I invite her using my 10.4.11 imac i can connect. What gives?
    Can someone please help?

I am running into a similar problem (error -8) that seems to be chronic with recent Leopard builds with iChat AV 4.02 - (not 3).
We have a LAN with multiple Macs/PCs set up behind a Linksys RVS4000 router connected to a generic Comcast cable modem.
I have MacBook Pro running 10.5.2 and a G4 Dual 1.42 MDD running 10.4.11. I can connect to anyone on my iChat buddy list with the G4 running Tiger. I can connect only intermittently to the same list of buddies (est. 25% of the time) on my MacBook Pro running Leopard using the same ISP connection behind the same router with the same cable. The only difference seems to be the OS and how the firewall is configured.
My Tiger firewall is configured as suggested in the pages on this link. http://www.aptr36.dsl.pipex.com/
My Leopard firewall is set "for specific services and applications" with iChat and
Stealth Mode enabled. No other software specific settings options are available as with Tiger.
The RVS4000 is configured for iChat AV port forwarding as suggested in other postings in these discussions which frankly seem to apply only to the Tiger firewall setup parameters. All relevant ports are forwarded to the same "static" LAN IP used on each machine.
iChat AV 4.02 bandwidth limit set to "none". QT streaming option set to 1.5 mbps.
We do also have VOIP with Vonage set up behind the RVS4000 with port 5061 forwarded to the VOIP server. Perhaps this is an issue with Leopard (but not Tiger)?
All networking options being equal, the problem would seem to lie in the lack of software firewall options, which in Tiger allow the user to configure the OS to accept packets forwarded through the router firewall, but which in Leopard are overtly missing.
There are a lot of posts on this discussion forum regarding similar if not identical issues with iChat AV 4, many of which go unanswered as has this one.
Currently I conduct all of my iChats on the G4 using Tiger and will remain doing so until Apple fixes the Leopard firewall.

  • Any way to open specific ports?

The new firewall is sure easy to use. A little too easy. I would like to open some ports for a server daemon that isn't running as root. How is this accomplished?
Where is the list of opened ports?
    How are port conflicts handled?
    Any third party recommendations?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I have an application that uses a pref pane and supposed to open a specific port (in Tiger) for network or local file access, AccountEdge Network Edition (AENE). Supposedly this method opens the port you select. In Leopard it open it and something appears to close it after a couple of seconds. I tried to set the port, reinstall the pref and application, turn off the Firewall (System Preferences>Security>Firewall, really says 'Allow all incoming connections') all make no difference.
It therefore seems to be an application upgrade issue with the program. ANyone have any other ideas? This set up is a clear departure from the Tiger firewall set up in many ways. I wonder if Apple told anyone about this?

  • Security precautions to take

    Hi folks,
I have just got broadband for the first time (what a difference!).
Apart from using the built-in Tiger firewall, should I be taking other security precautions? Virus scanner? Is the Tiger firewall good enough or is one from Intego or Norton going to be better?
    Any suggestions?

Besides making sure OS X's built-in firewall is active (this is the default), in System Preferences> Sharing> Firewall tab, click the Advanced button, and check the boxes for the options "Block UDP traffic" and "Enable Stealth Mode". Checking "Enable Firewall Logging" and checking it periodically won't hurt, either.
