Tiger freezing on shutdown/USB issue?

Hi,
I am running Tiger 10.4.6 on an iMac g3 4000mhz with 640mb ram. Suddenly, the iMac freezes on shutdown though the mouse pointer is on screen and can be moved. The only way to get the machine back on is to switch the unit off.
Another problem which could be linked is that my LaCie external USB drive does not mount on startup. When I run System Profile of disk utility, it takes and age to find it, and sees the drive (even though it's not mounted) and then does mount the volume.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be with this?
Thanks,
James

Hi jameseyre1 and everyone!
I do have the similar problem, and no solution yet. After I've connected LaCie external hard-drive, Tiger freezes every time screensaver runs. Sometimes it happens at any point during the work without any reason. I can move the mouse just like you do (not when screensaver is on, though)
LaCie mounted perfectly and works just great and it might be a coincedence. Anyway, maybe these two problems are related - we will be greatful for any thoughts. Thanx.

  • Driver update for Win 7 USB issue on nVidia chipset systems now available

This patch is needed for the TouchSmart 600 AIO Desktop series if you haven't installed it.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/Driver-update-for-Win7-USB-issue-on-nVidia-chipse...

The update is not part of the desktop Win7 update disc from MS or HP  - Microsoft has not yet integrated it into Win7, and it is not yet available on Windows Update (it is likely to hit there sometime in January).   It was available too late to get it out on HP Update before the holiday break.  I don't believe there have been any rolls to the Win7 upgrade disks.   I do recommend (while still on Vista) running HP Update and installing all applicable updates  - PRIOR to doing the Win7 upgrade.  Also - I'd double check the drivers page for your system for any Vista updates as well,  best to do any driver/BIOS/Video BIOS updates prior to the Win7 upgrade process.  I know that some of them were created before Windows 7 was out - and may not want to install if it sees the newer OS.
As to the fix - this could manifest itself in many ways - but essentially - this resolves system flakyness with USB devices attached .  Some internal devices (card readers, touchscreens, some Wireless LAN interfaces) connect via USB - so they could be affected, even if you haven't hooked up anything to your system externally.
Not sure just what problems you were experiencing, so can't say this was the cause (and will be the fix) - but if it applies to your system - I'd definitely give it a shot.    I checked a couple of systems that had this update - I see it now on the software drivers and update page for them, so it looks like it rolled out OK.
    Happy Holidays...

  • Intel Imac freezes on shutdown

    Hi,
I'm a long time windows user, but I've only had this mac for about 2 weeks so everything is just about new to me. The first week's been no problem but out of the blue during this 2nd weekend my imac has started to freeze on shutdown. I hit shut down, the blue screen comes up, the spinning thing spins and then when the machine should shut down the spinning thing stops. It's completely frozen. I've let it sit like this for up to 45 minutes and it just doesn't work its way out so I have to hold the power button til the machine turns off. I've installed the latest updates and I've ran the disk utility in the utilities folder, but the problem persists.
Like I said before, this is a new computer and I haven't done too much to it. It's connected to a canon pixma mp150 printer via USB, an HP deskjet 8750 printer via a netgear wireless router, a wacom intuos 2 via USB and my ipod via USB. All that I have installed is the camino web browser, open office and x11, AIM, divx, adobe photoshop cs3 and adobe illustrator cs3. That's all the information I have.
I tried looking up this problem on google and at the apple website but I can't seem to find anything that matches.
If you have any ideas what the problem is, I'd love to hear it! I really don't want to have to return this computer and face high restocking fees!
    Thanks!!!

    Hi ChiaCheese,
one way to solve your problem might be to create a new account into which you copy everything from your old account. This solved my problem with FileVault:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305454
If that's too heavy, have you checked: Finder/Go/Utilities/Disk Utility.app, run the permissions.
You can also run the startup from the CD and check the hard drive.
This page gives good information about what you can do with Mac OS problems:

  • Mac Pro USB issue

I have a weird situation. I have a Mac Pro 8 core 3.0Ghz with 13GB RAM, 4 SATA internal drives, 2 USB external 500 Western Digital Drives. I use bay one of the sata for OSX Tiger and Bay 2 for OSX Leopard (both purchased versions). The problem is when I'm in Tiger the USB drives have a through put of about 3MB and when booted in Leopard they have a through put of about 24MB. I can only guess that it's a driver problem, but I haven't been able to find anything about the fix. I did find that the WD USB Drives have a problem with speed. These WD drives are USB and SATA. When using them as SATA drives they work fine on both versions of OSX. The problem is I need the SATA connections for other drives and just want to use the WD drives as backup. Has anyone got any ideas why the drives perform normally under Leopard and not under Tiger?

    Hi southwos,
That certainly is a strange one...
I have heard of several USB issues pertaining to tiger updates, noteably, 10.4.11. It would seem some USB drivers were updated to fix several bugs, but inadvertantly, caused others. The solution it seems, is to rollback to 10.4.9.
The symptoms of this 'unexpected feature' (sic) are that some USB devices seem to operate at USB1.1 speeds.
This only affects a small number of devices, and its the chipsets in said devices that have the conflict.
Certainly hope i have been of help
    Cheers

  • Freezing on shutdown

I have a new MacBook Pro - it's my first mac. It's freezing on shutdown. When I shut it down, all icons disappear from the desktop so all you can see is the wallpaper/backdrop. Then it freezes. This has been happening at night - I have left it on hoping it would shut down or go into sleep mode. In the morning the battery has apparently died because it won't start up unless I plug it in. (It had a fully charged battery the night before.) What is the cause of this and what should I do? I searched these forums but couldn't find this exact question.
This MacBook is about 3 weeks old and as my first mac, I am finding it disappointing in its reliability. This is the third issue I've had - the first being an apparently corrupted file in my library that filled up my entire hard drive on my third day of ownership. So I could use some encouragement!
    Thanks in advance.

This is a tangent but I just used whatsize and there is some file in my library under "filesync" that is called "Bands" and is taking up 90 gigs. I have no idea what this is.
3 days after I bought this computer a similar thing happened and I took it to the Genius Bar. They said a file in "filesync" was corrupted - it was taking up 70 gigs and had to be deleted. It looks like this is happening again and I am really frustrated with this computer!

  • New iMac Freezing on Shutdown

I got a new 21.5" (standard 500GB storage, 4 GB RAM) iMac about three weeks ago, and with the exception of the first time I shut it down, it freezes on the blue blue screen with the spinning wheel every time I attempt to shut it down. I eventually give up and manually turn it off using the power button.
I quit all programs before shutdown and have checked the Activity Monitor to see if something is still running, although I have to admit I'm not quite sure what all of the information in Activity Monitor really means. I use several external hard drives and use a USB to charge my BlackBerry, but ejecting and unplugging all devices before shutdown has made no difference with the freezing up.
The only additional software I've installed since purchasing the iMac is Photoshop CS5, Blackberry desktop manager and Microsoft Office. I don't believe it's the Blackberry software that's causing a problem because it began freezing on shutdown even before I downloaded that.
What could be causing this problem? Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to Discussions - Whatever is causing the problem, you are still covered by Apple Care, so call them and have them deal with it. Their number is 800-275-2273 and they will take care of you. By the way, you have posted in the iMac G5 Forum, which is for PPCs, you have an intel machine.
    Good luck,

  • Brand new T440p freezing on shutdown - happening on multiple identical laptops

I purchase Lenovo laptops for my employees at work.
Just ordered 2 brand new T440P laptops. Both machines are exhibiting the same behavior.
Turned on first machine, ran windows Update + did firmware update. Machine restarts after firmware update (automatically), but it just hangs at the ThinkPad wallpaper (no icons/desktop/mouse). Since I did a firmware update, left the machine there for 24+ hours before doing a hard shutdown. It continued to sit there over the 24 hours, had to eventually do a hard shutdown. Machine is obviously bricked because the firmware did not update correctly.
Turned on the second machine, booted into Windows for the fist time, started a clean shut down immediately, experiencing the same hang. Hard reset the machine, same thing happens every time.
Is there some issue going on with these machines? Luckily CDW is great about return policies, but this needs to be addressed.

My coworker and I each bought a new T440p, and we are experiencing the exact same problem in both of our machines (freezing on shutdown with the wallpaper showing and nothing else).  I did a clean factory restore on my machine, but the problem still persists.  It probably happens one in every 5 times or so (i.e. very frequently).  The only way to get out of it seems to be by holding down the power button.  Both of our machines are i5 4200M with NVIDIA 730M.  Has anyone tried calling Lenovo about this?

  • MBP Freezing on shutdown

    Hi All,
Recently my MBP has started to completely freeze on shutdown. The freeze leaves the GUI completely intact yet nothing updates (IE time stops, etc). The mouse still moves but nothing can be selected. I've left it in this state for 5 minutes before holding power. On startup after this has happened it doesn't seem to complain either.
What would be the best set of steps to isolate the problem?
    Thanks in advance
    Mark

Ok well some of us have the same issue...
I thought it was the recent Parallels update that I did. I went to build 4560 and it seemed like this started to happen after that. I then booted the MBP ran a few things in Mac OS (never entered Parallels) and then it froze again on shutdown.
Yesterday morning I opened it up and reseated the RAM chips several times sliding them in and out.
When I went to shutdown at the end of the day it froze... I let it sit and after about 1 minute it actually did shutdown. I was quite surprised. I'll see if maybe I have not just been giving it long enough to finish doing what it is doing.
My question which started this is if there is any log file I can look at that shows the last shutdown sequence.
Thats the problem with having such a nice GUI on Mac OS... I no longer spend much time at the unix prompt looking at logs like I used to in Linux. Now I have no idea (forgetful) where things might be!

  • How do install Tiger from an external USB drive?

I'm trying to upgrade from 10.2.8 to Tiger. How do I install Tiger from my external USB DVD drive? Tiger only comes on DVD and my G4 only has a CD ROM as an internal drive. Is there a way to boot from an external USB DVD drive?

    bamim2,
you obviously just cracked some known hardware restrictions that not even Apple knew how to do: Don't start up from an external USB device.
The procedure you described is the standard procedure for the startup manager. However, as Apple's article explains this does NOT work with USB-devices on PowerPC (G3, G4, G5) based Macs.

  • 24" iMac USB issue

Recently my 4-yr-old 24" iMac has been having USB issues. The only peripherals it will see are the mouse and keyboard (and a printer if it is plugged into the keyboard). Nothing else plugged into the USB ports is recognized - no iPhone, no printer, no hub, nothing. The built-in iSight camera and Bluetooth have also disappeared, and I know they are USB related as well. Genius bar says $450 for new logicboard. I can't find my AHT disk
The USB ports all seem to work with the mouse and keyboard. Any other suggestions? (I have reset PMU.)

Try resetting the SMC, if it doesn't work the first time do it 2-3x. Also try doing a PRAM reset.
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

  • Usb issues on a215

i downloaded the BIOS update to fix the screen going black issue, but now i'm having horrible USB issues.
    1. a drive i've used for 3 years can't be recognized by the laptop, no matter what port i put it into.
    2. i keep getting that "connection tone" noise as if things are being plugged and unplugged, but i'm not doing anything.
is there an update for this problem? i must admit i've had usb issues w/this laptop forever.

    Hi,
So, I suggest you if you have something attached to your USB Ports, then remove it and try to boot your machine up. Remove EVERY
    This should help you out.
If you got no success, then try following:
    1. Remove your battery and remove AC.
    2. Remove EVERTHING attached to your USB ports
    3. Put the battery in the machine back and connect AC
    4. Try to boot, it would be better to boot in safe mode (accessible through pressing F8 before windows is booting up)
In case of no success, give some feedback, maybe I or other users can give you then more hints.

  • Macbook Pro USB issue

    Hi All;
I saw lots of discussions about USB problem of Macbook Pro, and i tried maybe all suggestions,  i couldnt solve USB issue
I bought my Macbook Pro 13 inc, 500 GB, i5, OS X Lion, 2 days ago and this is my first Mac ...
I cant see my external disk (Philips), Samsung Galaxy S by using USB ports (i tried both USB enterances, but not working).
I checked my Hardware by Apple Hardware Test (extended test done) and it says 'No trouble found'
I checked Utilities and USB devices are not written in the list, only 500 GB SATA disk shown.
I uploaded MacFuse-Tuxera and ntfs-3g-2010 softwares for using USB devices but i cant solve the problem too...
My USB devices are not shown in desktop and utilities lists
How can i solve this problem, my devices work in Windows 7 - PC as usual, but in Macbook Pro, they dont work, please support me. I dont think that it can be hardware problem, Mac is new and devices are ok. Operating systems are different only.
    Thanks, Regards.

I solved the problem about Samsung Galaxy S, now i can connect it by changing settings of GALAXY S.
    Settings>Applications>Development
Than i plug phone to MAC and now i can see my phone on desktop
I checked my PHILIPS external disk, unfortunatelly it is produced for only Windows operating systems, so i cant use it anymore
My MAC has no USB problem, i can use my 3G USB device too, only Philips external disk failed.
    Thanks for your support...

  • IPAD 2 freezes on Shutdown and is now stuck, how do I unlock it?

    Hi Folks,
My shiny new engraved iPad2 freezes during shutdown and it now stuck with spinning shutdown icon :-( I left it over night and it's still spinning 8 hours later. There's no way to force power it down and unlock it. When I connect it to itunes I get a dialog that states "unknown error occurred (0xE8000065)".
    Thanks,
    Tom.

Ok, I called the tech support. The solution to unfreeze the iPAD 2, is to hold down the HOME and the POWER buttons simultaneously for over 16 seconds. This will reset the iPAD and you should see the metallic Apple Logo as the iPAD basically reboots itself.
Why the iPAD got frozen in the first place is still a mystery :-( But anyhow, it's all working just fine now :-)
    Thanks,
    Tom.

  • Lion = lackluster, USB issues

I'm very disappointed in Lion. With the exception of a few new features, it's useless and I'm shocked that Apple would publish a product like this. I've wasted $30. I never thought I would say anything like that about an Apple product. Up until now, I've never had any issues with any of the OS's.
Ever since I installed Lion, I've had USB issues. I plug something in and it doesn't work. Specifically, my iPhone, my flash drive and my USB 2.0 card reader. This is all equipment that worked flawlessly prior to the installation.
I've tried all the remedies: restart, plug and unplug the devices, tested the hub, plug and unplug from the iMac itself. Any suggestions?

I haven't heard that reported as a bug in Lion.
Have you tried an SMC reset?
    Reset PRAM first.

  • Tiger freezes when screensaver runs or any time during the work

    Hello everyone!
After I've connected LaCie external hard-drive, Tiger freezes every time screensaver runs. Sometimes it happens at any point during the work without any reason. I can move the mouse (when screensaver is on, though, after I moved the mouse the screen would go blank). LaCie works great and I don't think the problem is in it.
Also, right before this started I'd installed the Mac OS X 10.4.6 update. May be that is the reason. I don't know. I did what is in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=487116
In particular, I re-installed Mac OS X 10.4.6 combo update - it won't work. I've done permissions repairment, disk repairment, etc. Disk didn't require any repairments.
I tried disconnecting LaCie it won't help as well. What else might be done before I re-install Mac OS X itself (which I really don't want to do).
    Regards,
    Sergei

Since you've restarted and hard reset, the next step is to restore it.  Make sure you have it backed up via iTunes and then setup as new.
