Tiger Help Needed Badly - won't start

Please can someone help.
My macbook has died!
I was restarting the computer because there was an update and the mac told me too. And then in the middle of restarting it froze. I tried everything (held down the start key, tried it with the option button held down too, reset the battery - the works) but all I get is a black screen. I went searching for my system disc to do the repair thing but I can't find it anywhere. What should I do?? I tried calling apple care but they said they don't sell tiger anymore.
Does anyone know where I could get one?? I bought leapord but I don't want to use it cos' I'm scared it will wipe all my files and give me no option to run a repair/ first aid on it.
Any suggestions are greatly welcomed.
Louisa

Hi Louisa, and Welcome to the Discussions!
Apple may supply an original System disc for a small fee, you'll need the Serial# of your Book.

  • HELP! Macbook won't start, just gives start chime then repeats 3 bleeps??

Hi, I have a white Mac Book 13" bought December 2008 (sorry, don't know much more of the spec). It has always worked fine but yesterday when I started it (fully charged), the start up chime came on and then nothing on screen and the laptop immediately starts bleeping 3 beeps in a row, pause, then 3 bleeps etc etc. I have tried Apple, control power button (as recommended on forum) and the PRAM reset (also as recommended). I have checked battery, nothing else is plugged in. Yesterday after trying all of this I tried putting in the start up disc to see if I could reinstall but nothing changed it and the disc is now stuck in there. Somebody please help, what's wrong with it? Thanks!

Three beeps may suggest a problem with the RAM. You can remove one RAM stick and then the other and toggle which slot they go into. If your Mac still won't start in the different RAM configurations, you may need to see a specialist for additional diagnosis.

  • HELP! MacBook won't start...

I have what seems to be a serious problem.
Aften my MacBook crashing and me shutting it down using the power button, it won't start up. When I turn it on the only thing showing is a grey screen with a question mark on top of a folder-icon flashing.
The manual says something about the computer not being able to connect to the system software, however, to me it seems more like not connecting to the harddisc at all.
What could be the problem? And what can I do about it?
I'm worried about data on my harddisc - is it in danger?

    Good morning,
Hate to give bad news in the morning, however, from what you are saying it appears your hard drive has died.
You will want to make an appointment with your [local Apple Store's Genius Bar|http://www.apple.com/retail] as soon as possible to get verification of warranty status of your drive, however, please do remember that Apple does not handle Data Recovery.
Hopefully you were following the good practices of computing and have a recent backup of your data!
    Hope this helps! 

  • Help! Computer won't start

    Hi!
I have an iMac. All of a sudden it started going really slow while browsing the internet. I shut it down, and now it won't start.
    Here's what happens:
    Grey screen
    Apple logo
    Spinning wheel
    blue screen
    Spinning wheel
that's it. Does anyone know what I can do? I tried zapping the ram with PR-CMN-OPT. Didn't work.
    Help much appreciated.

Can you boot from your Install DVD? Just after the language panel comes up and you select English for example, go into Tools -> Disk Utility and take a look to see if your internal hard disk shows up in the left column. If it does, Verify Permissions, Verify Disk, Repair etc.

  • Help my mac won't start up all I have is a blue screen!

Last night my mac failed a security update, which I thought was strange but didn't take too much notice. Now it won't start up all I have is a light blue screen and a grey spinning circle
    Help!

    Nunu,
Ended up re-installing OS X all seems ok now although itunes won't work. Have downloaded system updates but now quicktime isn't current enought!
    ARRRRRHHHH!
Well since you have a 450 I would suggest you keep a clone of your updated hard drive. That way if something happens you can just clone back from your update and not have to go through all the updating.
I've done that with my iBook and it's now crashed 3 times so it's sitting here waiting for me to put in a new hard drive. I have two clones of it so no problem.

  • Urgent help! G5 won't start up!

My G5 won't start up. I have resetted the PRAM thing with no effect.
Inside, there is a yellow LED with the word "trickle" on. I assume this means it is getting power, but it won't start up. Nothing happens when you press the button.
I urgently need this working ASAP. What can do?
    Thanks.

When you press the power button, does anything at all happen? Do fans attempt to start or boot tone or video of any kind?
Verify power outlet is good. Actually this gets missed more then you might think. Does your power cord work on any other device?
Check that diagnostic LED 4 is on yellow when the power cord is connected. Press power button. Fans should go to hi when clear deflector is removed, If not - Replace power cord.
Check that diagnostic LED 3 is on and red when the power cord is connected and the air deflector is
removed. This indicates power is OK and within Regulation.
Reset the logic board by removing power Cord for TWO minutes or more.
Verify power supply cables are fully connected.
Verify that processors are properly seated. Check diagnostic LED 1 and/or LED 6.
Verify that processors’ mounting screws are properly tightened.
Reseat front panel board. Notice here it says reSEAT, not replace.
Test whether the front panel board or power button is at fault. Remove the installed front
panel board and swap it for a known-good front panel board if you have one. If you don't you can continue this process but each next step is costly and you may not have the parts to try these.
    Replace front panel board.
    Replace power button.
    Replace power supply.
    Replace logic board.
If you have a voltmeter, you can check power supply by first using very small probes on leads in order to insert beside wires on PS connector at logic board.

My Ipad 1 won't start up, after the apple sign I just get a scrolling circle in the middle of the screen. It eventually switches itself off. Any ideas what I can do or is it finished ?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

  • Need help. Mac won't start up from HDD

My problem is: I went to system preferences, chose network startup from the Startup menu. My mac rebooted itself and tried to connect from a network drive. After it didn't find any network drive I force restarted it. When it booted up again it was the flashing question mark folder on the start-up gray screen. I followed everyone i knows advice to try to start it up from the start-up disk.
I also tried holding Apple-s. I held down the command button, option button, and control button for a least 45 seconds each. Nothing has worked.
I am 100% positive that it is because the computer will not start up from the Internal Hard drive, Which i am also 100% possitive is not broken or corrupt. I can use all the advice and solutions you guys will give me.
    Thank You,
    Brody6786
p.s. the following keys don't work on my keyboard:
    both shifts, z, a, q, 1, f1, delete.
I have an external keyboard but it seems it doesn't turn on until the gray screen appears.

    HI,
When it booted up again it was the flashing question mark folder on the start-up gray screen.
That can mean several things. One, your Mac can't find a System Folder to boot from. Or two, the hard drive is failing or failed.
Go here: A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac

  • Help my IPOD won't start PLEASE HELP

It gives me the apple screen and then switches into the foloer with an exclamation point and i don't know how to get it out. I have tried restarting, and plugging it into the computer doesn't do anything. It is charged, please help.

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2364921&#2364921
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.
    2. Do a search on Google and some topics on this discussion forum about “Sad iPod”

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Help - Macbook Pro won't start after running update

I just checked the FAQs here and ran several searches and have not found an answer to my problem. I sure hope someone here can help.
Today I installed the big batch of updates Apple released recently (I think it was on July 31) on my 2.4 GHz Macbook Pro. When I turned it on, I was told there was one last update that required me to turn off the machine and then hold down the power button.
I did, and the machine started to come on, but I guess I held the button down a little too long. Now the machine won't turn on. Everytime I press the button, I hear the same sound I always get when I turn on my machine, except that now the sound just goes on and on and on, and the MBP never actually boots up.
I wish I could remember the exact name of the update. I think it might be the EFI Firmware Update 1.2 that's described at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookproefifirmwareupdate12.html. That scares me because the words "Important: Do not interrupt the update" suggest things can go badly if the update doesn't go right the first time.
Any advice as to what I should do?

That sounds like an interrupted firmware update. And Macs with interrupted firmware updates are very unhappy Macs!
You will need to restore your firmware to it's original state, then reapply the update. For this, you'll need to create a Firmware Restoration CD.
    See this page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303469
Here's one of the more important sections of the page: +"If your computer is already in this state, you'll need to download the software and create the CD on another Macintosh computer, or you can take your computer to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to restore your firmware. This CD can be created on both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macintosh computers."+
You might be better off just taking it in to an Apple Store.
Ps. When you get a chance, you might want to update OS information in your forum settings - I'm pretty sure you're not running 10.3.8 Panther on your MBP!

  • OMG PLEASE HELP ME! WON'T START UP AND SCREEN LOOKS FUNNY O.O

Okies, my sister was on my macbook pro all night, and i just finished updating some program (the mac version of winzip?) and the comp froze and had little rectangles all over it, like tiny TVs with bad reception on it O.o
So i hold down the Power button to reset it, then turn it on, the little rectangles are there when the grey screen with the apple on it, then it goes to a blue screen and stops
I can't do anything! I even have my install disk in it cos i thought i might need to restart it that way and now it won't come out T_T
Please help! I don't know what ive done, i've only had it...less than a week!

Couple of things I'd do here:
    1. Restart your computer.
    2. While the computer restarts, press the trackpad button and hold it down through the boot process. During the normal bootup process, this should tell the computer to eject the CD.
    After that, follow these steps:
    1. Turn off your computer again.
    2. Unplug all cables including the power cable
    3. Take out the laptop's battery.
    4. Press the power button and hold it down for 5 seconds.
    5. Put back in the battery.
    6. Plug in the power cord
    7. Press the power button to start the computer
    8. As soon as you here the "bong" noise (the startup noise) press and hold down the following keys: Command Option P R (that's four keys all together including the letters P and R)
    9. In a few seconds, the computer will go "bong" again (i.e., present the startup sound). Once that happens, let go of the keys and let the computer finish booting.
Did this work to solve your screen problems?
