Tiger iCal vs Leopard iCal

Can someone enlighten me as to the differences between iCal in Tiger vs Leopard?
I believe there are some subtle differences, but which is best? If I upgrade to Leopard, will I be getting increased functionality?
Thanks in advance.

I find Leopard iCal much more frustrating and difficult to use. It seems like they decreased the functionality and stability rather than increasing it.
For example the drawer that displays all of an events information is no longer an option. Now you have to double click an event (a balloon window pops up with the events information but you can't edit anything in that window) and then you have to click edit. That might seem miniscule but when you use iCal a lot those clicks add up.
I have also had problems with the stability. I'd view a previous month and then go forward a month and the events from both months would display.
I like a lot of people have been waiting for iCal updates to increase stability and to create an easier and more efficient way to enter events... perhaps with Snow Leopard... I'd personally wait until then to upgrade.

  • Can I sync a Leopard iCal to a Tiger one?

Have 10.5.2 at home; 10.4.11 at work.
If I populate Leopard (home)'s iCal with To-Do's from Mail.app 3, then synch via .Mac, will iCal at work still on Tiger be able to read those To-Dos?
And would I be able to synch in the opposite direction - from Tiger iCal via .Mac into Leopard iCal and hence Mail.app 3 ?
    TIA!

Good question... I'm not sure. I guess it depends on how the todos are stored and synced. Unfortunately, I don't have a Tiger machine around anymore to try it out. Your best bet might be to back everything up and try it yourself

  • APPLE = Fix iCal in Leopard!!!!!

    Hi,
What did Apple do to iCal in Leopard? They broke it somehow. I had hard drive failure in powerbook. Replaced Hard drive, did new install of Leopard. Then installed Palm desktop 4.2 (newest from site). Setup Palm Treo 650 conduit in isync. It will only sync the addresses, nothing in iCal. Either way is bad. From Treo to iCal, and iCal to Treo won't work. Everything IS setup correctly. I used to do this in Tiger with no problems. What did Apple do to Leopard? This needs to be corrected immediately! I do all my scheduling in iCal. It is useless to me if I can't sync it to the Treo to take with me.

My sync in Leopard was working OK until today. My Nokia E61 syncs contacts but not calendar entries as of today. Strange. iSync doesn't recognize the calendars in iCal and says "No writable calendar was found" even though iCal is open right behind it.

  • Leopard iCal (v3.0) takes away functionality and ruins the user experience

Why oh why did Apple DESTROY the usability of iCal present in Tiger with the horrid changes they made to iCal in Leopard? Please, Apple, put it back the way it was.
In Tiger iCal, if I highlight an event, the sidebar pops up intelligently ready for me to enter times, repeats, alarms, notes, or invitees. It was even smart enough to put it to the side with the most screen space.
In Leopard iCal, Apple has taken all that intelligent functionality away and burdened users with way too many unnecessary mouse clicks before en event can be entered or edited.
Now, with "new and improved (NOT)" Leopard iCal 3.0, if I want to add an event in the monthly calendar, I double click on the day, but instead of the sidebar opening all by itself, I must now do another double click on the event itself and yet another click on the EDIT button, all before I can actually enter an event in the real world.
Oh, sure, I can type the name of my event after the first double click, but that's useless for any events with times, invitees, alarms, or notes.
Again, what were the people at Apple thinking? Do any of them actually use iCal?
I check the iCal help and there was something about clicking a button in the lower right hand corner of the iCal window to quicking edit an event, but there is no such button there, only the push pin for to-dos. CMD-I will bring up the event window, but it still requires a mouse click on enter edit mode.
If you agree with me and want iCal back the way it was, please submit iCal feedback to Apple and tell them they got it wrong in Leopard iCal 3.0.

Lot's of folks agree with you.

I keep thinking, maybe I'll just get used to the changes and still, every single day the use of this core application is a source of constant frustration. I keep blindly hoping that the iCal team will listen to user feedback and examine the usability of this app.
And for the record, it's never been about the info drawer - it's about overall usability and restoring such basic items as one click editing of content on the calendar, being able to have a usable / expandable long event descriptions and being able to edit with one click vs. three.
For just one instance of how they broke this, just try creating a text entry of 200 characters or more in the "notes" field and then see what happens if you add more text. Unlike this web form which automatically keeps scrolling so you can keep typing....it stops and you have to manually scroll from short line to short line. It's just unbelievable - as if they didn't QA the basic functionality with a single user that does anything beyond the most limited use of the app.

  • Ical in leopard won't open

I just upgraded from tiger to leopard. ical won't open. says the app version is not compatible with this version of mac osx. doesn't make sense since ical was supposed to be upgraded with the install. any suggestions.

    Elbo51,
I assume that you are using the Dock to open iCal. If so, delete the iCal icon from the Dock and replace it with the iCal application which should be located in your applications folder.
Did you search your HD for other copies of iCal?

  • Question on Mail and iCal in Leopard

To those of you using Mail and iCal in Leopard...
What do you think of the new features? How does it handle things such as meeting invites and tasks?
I'm trying to determine whether or not to upgrade, and this is the determining factor. I have yet to find "professional" mail/calendar/task manager program for my Mac that makes doing business with Outlook users, easy (Entourage is terrible...)

As a consultant who runs around all day, I rely heavily on iCal, plus I use it to do my billing at the end of the month.
I find the new Leopard iCal, which I just upgraded to a couple days ago, to require lots more mousing. I don't like that at all. I prefer the info drawer of Tiger's iCal. I have to click like three times to get to where I can edit the name or note of an appointment. I'm currently planning to read the instructions (gasp!) to see if there are any useful shortcuts for those of us who are carpal-tunnelly challenged.
I don't use invitations or tasks, so I can't address that. Just the standard events.
I do love the way iCal and Address Book integrate with my iPhone. I dumped my Treo and have never looked back.

  • Leopard iCal - Sync is working again!!!

As so many of you I've been struggling to sync iCal after updating from Tiger to Leopard. I've read thousands of posts and spent whole nights trying to find a solution...
Apple is my thing since 1995 and this was the single most frustrating bug from Steve Jobs' farm of geniuses!
You will not believe it, but the solution is crazy simple and you will find it on the blog of Thijs Vrolix (all credits to him):
    http://tijsvrolix.be/2008/01/21/leopard-ical-sync-is-working-again
It has resolved all my problems and the sync now works perfectly on my iPod, iPhone, Nokia E60 (Symbian) and from my MacPro (Leopard) to my Powerbook G4 (Tiger) via .Mac.

I've found more info. I think I've found the file that has that string in it. There's a file called:
    /Users/ramos-m/Library/Mirrors/0016cb8b9896/mirrors.plist
Which seems to have the string:
    <key>home_xmlSpec</key>
    <string>afp://192.168.102.3/Users</string>
Which is the incorrect home. Why is this here and how do I fix it? Do I just put the right one in there? Somehow that feels wrong in that it's only a band-aid. Why isn't this file getting updated? What is it?
    Thanks,
    Rich

  • Delete without notifying removed in Leopard iCAL

In the new iCal Apple has removed a function that was useful when dealing with events sent to you by others or invites you sent to others. In Tiger you had the options of "Cancel", "Delete" and "Delete and Notify" for events you sent or sent to you by others that you had accepted.
With Leopard the "Delete" is no longer available. You can only delete events sent to you by notifying the sender or recipient. This is a real problem when syncing issues cause double ups. You can't delete a duplicated event without a message being sent telling the recipient or sender that you have cancelled the event!

Here is a script that I modified to work with iCal in Leopard. It deletes duplicate events without sending notifications. Cut and paste it into Script Editor change the calender name to the right one for you then save it to the scripts folder. It will appear in your scripts menu. When ever you have duplicates that you want to get rid of run the script.
Delete duplicates from iCal v2 --
    Applescript -- John Maisey 27/5/5 --

  • Leopard iCal is very poor

I've emailed apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ical.html but wanted to ask if other users have the same issues I have:
    - bugginess around new events - occasional crasshes, frequent loss of text entered when a new event is created
    - frustration at the increased number of mouse clicks to create and edit events - this is driving me crazy! Does anyone know of a good third party calendar?
    - dissatisfaction with the pop up balloon and a wish to get the info drawer back
One more question - has anyone found a way to use an older version under Leopard?

Just to add my voice in case anyone at Apple looks at these boards--the new Ical ***** compared to the old one, I really don't like having to do so much clicking to get information that was readily available in the old Ical "drawer." Which worked great, much simpler than the new system. If I can figure out how to re-install the old Ical I'm going to...
The new "help" system in Leopard is also inferior for Ical and every other time I've used it. If you have one system running Tiger and one Leopard try it out--more click to get less information every time under Leopard. I often find myself using the help files in my old non-leopard system just because help actually is in there in an indexable form without a bunch of clicks...
My Aperture is also falling apart, despite the new update, had to re-install twice. I'm not quite at the point of going back to Entourage and Lightroom but close, the "new" software direction at Apple seems to be going downhill (with the exception of FCP). I can't honestly say there isn't one thing that's the same in both versions that works better or is more functional in Leopard than it did in the last OS X. Time Machine is cool as are some of the new features, but function for function Tiger kicks Leopard's spots.
    Done venting.

  • Use iCloud calenders in iCal on Leopard

    Hey
Is it possible to use iCloud calenders in iCal on Leopard, OS X 10.5?
    This is my server settings:
https://p02-caldav.icloud.com/825681252/principal/         (I have change the number for the unic icloud id)
When I type my username and password, iCal find the account but not the calenders...
    / Fredrik

if people can get it working with 10.6, there has to be SOME method to get it working for 10.5.8.
It IS just CALDAV technology, the tech has not changed between 10.5 and 10.6, just the ical interface
    has anyone had any success?
    Really appreciate any help.
Note: Before posting "you can't sync ical etc in less than 10.7.2", please read the post.  Yes you can.  it is done using Caldav with 10.6 by finding the server address in your plist.  There is  NO REASON why this shouldnt be workable in 10.5.8, but I haven't been able to get it going.
Thank you any repliers in advance

  • ICal on Leopard possessed by evil spirit

Is iCal on Leopard inhabited by an evil spirit? Apparently.
Why else would iCal refuse to let me do what I want IN MY OWN CALENDAR and instead try to impose its own will?
If someone sends me an invite, I get an email and click through to iCal. Now an entry is in iCal. But, there is a catch. If I want to accept the meeting but change anything about the entry (for example, give it a heading I can recognise, or fix the time of the meeting which iCal is usually getting wrong these days), iCal has decided I am not authorised to changes things IN MY OWN CALENDAR. No, the only way I can change it is to Decline the meeting (which I don't want to do, as it sends a decline message to the meeting organiser - and I am not declining).
If I want to just delete the draft calendar entry (after looking at it), iCal has decided I am not authorised to do that either - IN MY OWN CALENDAR. So I can either leave the wrong info in my diary or send a decline notice to the organiser (which I may not want to if I am not declining).
If I am in an email with an appointment mentioned, Mail now has nifty little buttons to let me create an iCal appointment for that entry. But only for the date/time iCal thinks (which is invariably wrong, due to time zones). I can't amend the date/time of an entry I am going to create IN MY OWN CALENDAR.
So, I can only conclude iCal on Leopard has been possessed by an evil spirit who wants to take over control of what I do IN MY OWN CALENDAR.
Very frustrating. This isn't what Mac software is meant to be about, surely.

    G'day Lisa,
I have experienced the same frustration - and had it resolved by installing GCALDaemon (see my other post on this at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6921704#6921704).
This uses a Google Calendar as the middleman - but it works well, and enables you to edit in both places (and across ical versions). In fact you can edit your Google Calendar and have it show up on both Macs... (which stomps all over .mac calendaring).
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • After install snow leopard, ical does not show the events of some calendars

After I install snow leopard, ical does not show all the events, or simple does not show the events of some calendars that I created.
Can somebody solve this problem? Is there some update for ical?

    Try the following:
1 - Go to your user account home folder, and open the library folder within it.
Look for the folder named "Calendars" and inside you might find a bunch of different folders with weird names. If they are there that means your calendars might not be lost.
2 - Look for the file "Calendar Cache". That file might be corrupted. Trash it. You may want to save a copy of it elsewhere. Once trashed, re-open ical. This should force it to rebuild its library based on those folders with weird names you saw. Your calendars should be back. Good luck

  • Manual Setup of New iCal for Leopard

I'm using 10.5.8 and upgraded iCal to the latest one since they say in the email that it is possible to use iCal with Leopard, even though I need to setup manually.
But, that's the all I could find.
There is no guide or manual whatsoever as to how to set it up, at least it's not in the range I can see.
Does anyone know how to make Leopard work with the latest iCal somehow?
    Thank you.

    Thanks!
That's what I was looking for.
I'm not sure why Apple did not provide the link to this page in the first place, makes me wonder if they just force the current Leopard users to switch to the Snow Leopard...

  • Leopard iCal "Calendar Cache" subscription refresh bug persists in 10.5.3

The 10.5.3 Leopard update does NOT fix the infamous Leopard iCal "Calendar Cache" bug, as discussed in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6660830 .
This bug, introduced with Leopard, prevents iCal from picking up modifications to events on subscribed calendars. The workaround is to delete "~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache" and then refresh calendars. The file deletion can be done automatically by a login Automator script as suggested by a contributor to the thread linked above.
This to me is one of the most embarrassing bugs introduced with Leopard. It has high impact (prevents use of iCal in an enterprise setting) while appearing to be a very simple bug and thus most likely very easy to fix.

Hmm, I did not get the "Calendar Cache could not be moved" message when I updated to 10.5.3.
The bug I'm referring to is different. It is a persistent bug in all Leopard versions to date. It prevents iCal from detecting modifications to subscribed calendars.
For example, say you subscribe to a baseball-game schedule. The organizers decide to change the date of a game in the calendar server. But you arrive at the field on the original date, surprised that you are the only one there. Why? Leopard iCal relies on stale cached information EVEN WHEN EXPLICITLY TOLD TO REFRESH SUBSCRIPTIONS.
The only way around it is to delete the "Calendar Cache" file and then ask for an iCal refresh ON A REGULAR BASIS since otherwise you don't know if subscribed events have been modified or not.
    Or, use SunBird.
I don't think this has anything to do with the "file cannot be moved" error some folks are apparently seeing as part of the update to 10.5.3. That probably deserves its own thread?

  • Leopard iCal - Teach me the right way to input an event

I am beyond frustrated and hoping someone can help me with this. In Outlook, or any previous version of iCal, a double click on a specific day in month view will bring up a new event dialog box where you can input the name, time, alarms, attendees etc. In Leopard iCal, a double click only lets you input the name of the event only. You then have to double click it again to launch the dialog box. It is extremely redundant and unproductive, especially when you have a bunch of events to enter.
Am I doing something wrong here?

I'm more of a keyboard guy myself, so my method may or may not work to your satisfaction if you like the mouse...
    1. I double click anywhere on the day for which I'd like to add an event.
    2. I press Cmd+E to bring up the edit dialog box.
    3. I then simply tab through each of the fields, entering info as I go (i.e. enter event name, tab, location, tab, start time, tab, end time, tab, etc.)
I hear you that it could be advantageous to simply bring up the edit dialogue box after creating any new event, as most users probably want to enter more information than simply a title. You could leave feedback here if you'd like: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ical.html
To save a step where possible, create a new event by clicking the start time, holding the mouse button, dragging to the end time, and then releasing the button. This will create an event with right the start and end time you seek instead of always creating an hour long event (the default, I believe) with a double click which requires you to type in the real start/stop time later.
I also used iCal preferences to set a default alarm of 3 days before (4320 minutes), which is sufficient for the majority of the events I create. This way, I also eliminate fidgeting with the alarm type/time for new events except when I have an exception.
If setting a default alarm works for you, then using the above steps (assuming you can click and drag for your event length) would yield a new event process of: click, drag, release, Cmd+E, enter event title, tab, location, tabtabtab..., enter notes if applicable, Cmd+I (to get rid of the window), done.
There's probably many, many ways to do this. Just wanted to offer my method.
    -John
