Tiger install disk gets ejected, won't mount

Hello. I'm trying to upgrade my G5 to Tiger. The disk won't mount and gets ejected after about 30 seconds. I'm able to mount the Panther DVD. Any ideas? Thanks

Is it a retail boxed version of Tiger or a restore copy that was included with another computer?
You'll want to get the retail version to upgrade your G5.

    I just bought a used Powermac G4 877 Mhz that had OS 10.2 installed. It has upgraded memory, ungraded Pioneer Combodrive (DVD-RW CD-RW)and an updated video card. I have Panter OSX 10.3 (Panther) Install disks. My goal was to upgrade this new G4 to 10.3 with these disks.
    I first used the seller's 10.1 Install disks to clean out the system and start from scratch. Then I attempted to load my 10.3 Install disks to begin the installation. I held down the "c" key as you are supposed to when you restart the OS but instead of coming up in the Installer, the 10.3 disks for ejected and the operating system booted into 10.1.
    I'm not sure if this symptom is related but I notice that there is no sound coming from Playing iTunes songs after I installed OS10.1
    I'm taken a step backward because when the Mac was sold to me I checked out from the Profiler that the OS was v10.2. Now I'm at v10.1 and don't have a way to get to 10.3 because of this problem.
    Any suggestion on fixing this problem would greatly be appreciated. What happened and how do I fix it?

    For whatever reason, the sypmtoms of this problem went away just by re-doing the installation of OS X 10.1 from the original installation disks and downloading a few security updates to 10.1 until the OSX 10.1 Updater said I was "up to date".
    After this install, I was able to load my 10.3 Panther install disks w/o them being ejected and w/o a non-response (i.e., no error diaglogs and no appearance of my installation CD on the desktop) from OS 10.1.
    If anyone cares to offer up a reason for why near-identical recreaation of the steps resulted in the original problem, I would be interested in hearing.

    You don't need to update to Leopard 10.5.8 unless you want to keep Leopard. Upgrading to Snow Leopard requires that your purchase the retail install disk.

    Some general advice on updating:
    It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
    So before you do anything else:
    If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
    Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
    At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.

    If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.

    Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
    If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
    N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.

    Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very [i]first[/i] thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
    So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
    Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.

    To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
    Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    /Library/InputManagers
    ~/Library/InputManagers
    especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

    repair permissions - no.
    you can also repair disk without using an install DVD at all.
    boot into single user mode by holding command+s at the chime on restart. at the prompt enter
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    that's the command to run "repair disk". when it's done type
    reboot
    to restart normally.

Such DVDs are generally dedicated to utilities that repair disks, partition disks, backup data, or recover data. Such DVDs can be usefull when it is necessary to restart from another disk to run operations on the main hard disk. The DVD is related to the hardware it is created on, so it’s compatibility may vary depending on the machine used. For example, a DVD created on a PPC machine will not boot an Intel Mac. Contrary to previous version of Clone X, the System includes more libraries and frameworks to try to be the most compatible possible with applications. The drawback is that data will not fit on a CD-ROM anymore. You must use DVD. The System on the DVD is a limited one, and there is no Finder available on DVDs created by Clone X. But Clone X installs a special launcher, CXLauncher, to run any of the applications copied in the DVD.
    Creating the DVD
    First, you can choose the size of the DVD you want to create.
    Click the “Create a bootable DVD” button. Depending on preferences, Clone X may ask for a folder where the disk image used to create the DVD will be saved.   • Pismo G3 Tiger Install Disk won't boot

    Hey, I just got a G3 Pismo off eBay and I am having trouble reinstalling Tiger onto it. It's a 500 Mhz G3 and it's been upgraded to 1 gig of Ram and a 100 gig hard drive. It's currently running 10.4.11, so I know it can handle it. Whenever I try installing it just hangs on a white screen after start up. I've tried from both the internal DVD drive and an external DVD drive. One thing I have noticed is that the install disk won't show up as an option in the Startup Disk panel when it's in the external drive, even though it will mount normally.
    I've tried booting as the startup disk from it's current install and from Os 9.2.2 but no luck. I've reset the PRAM/NVRAM and reset the PMU and still nothing.
    Any ideas?

    Are you using a retail Tiger install DVD (black with silver X)? A gray, model specific installer for a different model Mac won't work.
    I suspect your external DVD drive is connected via USB, which can't be used for a boot drive. You need an external Firewire drive if you want to boot from a DVD/CD.
    What's wrong with the 10.4.11 OS currently installed? We might can recommend some fixes if there are problems.

  • Tiger install disks won't boot

    I'm trying to install OS 10.4.6 on a "new-to-me" older PowerMac G4 AGP grapics. The machine came with no software and an uninitialized 15G hard drive, 128M memory and a functional DVD. I've added an 80 gig 2nd drive and 512 of "new to me memory (2X 128 + 256). I've installed OS 9.2 from my old iMac's original disk and the machine works fine but I want to finally upgrade to OS X and I can't get my new install disk to boot up. I can read the disk when the when I'm using the OS 9.2, but if I click on install or try boot while pressing the "C" key it won't work. I get a gray screen with an apple, a circlar timer spins for about 40 seconds then everyting freezes.
    Things I've tried that didn't help:
    I've updated the firmware successfully.
    I've swapped out the memory sticks leaving only one new one at a time, so unless they are all bad I don't think they are an issue.
    I've disconnected all devices except my USB keyboard.
    A possibly relevant fact- the system profiler says I have a PCI card in slot B, whatever and whereever that is (maybe to run the small hard drive?)
    The install disk is from a retail, family-pack, a black disk with a gray "X". I bought it from a 2nd party dealer on Ebay but it came in a sealed Apple box and looks legit and undamaged.
    Any suggestions?

    You need to check if your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates

    this open firmware issue, how do you get around it? Wonder if it is causing me trouble; i.e. shift and other keys do not work and keeping me from booting with Tiger install. How do I access these keys then?
    I did a clean install on a secondary internal drive (device 1) 150GB Maxtor
    but it won't boot and "restart" brings me back to install process...
    have repaired disk -- OK -- repaired permissions -- OK. Re-installed and repaired. Peripherals are off or disconnected. Current OS is 10.3.9 on 20 GB HD (device 0)

    Is this a Wireless KB you have? Many aren't recognized until after booting.
    Hmmm, you've got the firmware Update needed for the AGP to install/use 10.4...
    I think I'd try this, worked for me on 3 such macs...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, then choose MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Partition tab.
    6. Click Erase & look for Security Options. choose Zero 1 pass."

    Oh, what are the Jumper settings on hat drive? Apple recommends Cable Select, but I find different settings work with a dizzying variety of Drive combos.

  • Original 10.4 Tiger install disc keeps ejecting

    Hello,
    I am trying to re-install my 2007 white MacBook to its original state so I can sell it.  It currently has Lion installed, when I insert the original Apple 10.4 Tiger CD/DVD into the super drive the disc just keeps ejecting.  All other discs work and the install disc does not eject from my MacMini. 
    Why is this happening?
    How can I get Tiger installed on it from the original disc?

    When trying to boot with a disc, it's say that the disc isn't compatible with your machine.  ( I thing strongly. )
    After you start up the machine normally,  can you insert the disc?
    You can manually delete things.  You might miss a few things but you should get most.

    start by deleting your id:
    Create new Account
    blue apple > system preferences
    clicks on accounts icon
    click on lock icon if locked. 
    enter logon password 
    click on + icon ( left side of screen just above the lock icon )
    after creating new account, you need to logout of your current account.
    blue apple > log out ... current count name ...
    log on to new account. see if problem goes away.
    if it has gone  away rename finder preference ( Not sure of name ) ... reboot.

  • Error during Tiger install, disk utility (DVD) says could not unmount disk

    OK, I'll start at the beginning. I was running 10.3.9 on my iMac G4. I hooked up a new firewire external HD. Transferred my iTunes music over, everything worked fine. Ran software update to make some updates (iTunes, Quicktime, Security Update, maybe another one) that I had been putting off because I had been out of space. That's when the problems began. It said I could not install updates, so I restarted. Then it hung up at Login Window starting. I did a few hard shutdowns (holding down power button) to try again, but was unsuccessful.
    Read all the forums. Decided that I should have repaired permissions, etc. before installing the updates. So I started in single-user mode, ran FSCK, all that stuff, following the instructions very closely. Still kept hanging up at Login Window. So I started up from the Panther install disk, repaired permissions (made a bunch of repairs) and checked hard drive (said no repairs necessary). Restarted, still hung up at Login Window starting.
    So I did an archive and install. There were errors near the end of the Panther install, and it said it could not finish. But the computer started up OK, and I was able to back up all my personal data onto the external HD.
    So I decided to upgrade to Tiger, thinking that would fix everything. During the upgrade, it said there were errors installing files and to try again. Did so, same result. The computer did start up in Tiger, but clearly was not operating at full capacity (slow, some things didn't work).
    So I decided to erase and install. Again, said there were errors and to try again. Did so twice, same result. Started up from the Tiger DVD and ran Disk Utility. When I clicked Repair Hard Drive, it said "could not unmount drive."
    So now I am stuck. I have a wiped hard drive. Can't repair it, and can't get Tiger to install properly. Help!
    (i do have an Apple store in town, but I haven't gone to the Genius Bar. Wasn't sure how that worked.)

    Hmmm. And you're sure that when you select the main
    hard drive entry in Disk Utility it shows a SMART
    status report that says "Not supported"? That's
    really odd because your model isn't too old to have a
    drive that doesn't support SMART.
    Yep, looking at it right now. I've got the drive that says "38.2 GB ST3408..." selected, and it says "Not Supported."
    By any chance would you have another external
    Firewire drive on which you could install Tiger? If
    you do, then you could try installing Tiger on that
    drive. If you can then boot the iMac from the
    external drive you could then try cloning the system
    from the external drive to the internal drive.
    I have the one external HD firewire drive. It has my backed up files on it. Could I still install Tiger on it without erasing those files?
    You could do the same thing from another Mac if both
    support Firewire. You could boot the iMac into Target Disk Mode while it's connected to
    another Mac's Firewire port. You could then clone
    from the other Mac to the iMac's hard drive that will
    appear on the Desktop of the other Mac.
    And I do have another Mac, which I am typing on right now. It's sitting right next to my "sick" iMac. If I recall correctly, it's an iMac DV special edition. It does have a firewire port and I think it has a DVD drive. It's running 9.0 currently.
    You can use the Restore option of Disk Utility to do
    the cloning. The process is as follows:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the source or startup volume from the left
    side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the source or startup volume to the Source
    entry field.
    5. Select the destination or backup volume from the
    leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry
    field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this
    step if you've already formatted the drive.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the
    Restore button.
    So should I use the firewire external HD or the old iMac to do this? (Thanks so, so much for all this help, by the way. I really appreciate it. I love my iMac and want to save it! I have to go cook dinner right now, but I'll come back later to check your answer and try your suggestion.)

    I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
    I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

    Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
    The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
    You need much more RAM than that.

    Has anyone else had problems with their Mac not reading the OSX Tiger 10.4 install disks? I just purchased Tiger brand new from Apple, but my Mac Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 will not even acknowledge the install disk. I currently have OSX 10.3.9 running. Help!

    Either your Tiger disc is defective or your optical drive is. Can you read other CDs in the same drive? If so, contact Apple to arrange for a replacement CD.

  • How do I force reinstall my install disk when OS won't startup.

    I have an iMac (Intel) that won't complete the startup. I.e. It's stuck at the beginning with the grey screen, with grey apple, and spinning dashes. I went to Genius Bar, where, after much investigation, they said I should reinstall the OS - i.e. reinstall my install disks.
    Problem is that even when I put in my install disk, the computer ignores it. What do I do to force the computer to startup using the disks, not the hard drive? I know there must be a button on the keyboard to force this. Thanks for your help.

    Put the original Install Disc that came with the computer in the SuperDrive then start the computer while holding down the Option key on your keyboard. Continue holding the Option key down until the system asks you which start up volume you want, choose the Install Disc and it will begin the install.
    To do a clean install (wipe the whole HD clean) after choosing the language click the *Utility Menu*, *Disk Utility*, highlight your *HD on the left* and then click the *Erase Tab*, then *Format (make sure it's set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)*, after that is done (less than 30 seconds usually) then exit Disk Utility and continue with the install following the on-screen instructions.
    *NOTE: I hope you have been backing up the system, if not Erasing will delete everything. If you have not backed up then I'd recommend trying to reinstall without Erasing which may work.*

    I have a Late 2013 27" iMac running OS X 10.9.4.  I have an external drive that I use for Time Machine backups which also has an encrypted sparse bundle disk image.  Yesterday, the drive stopped showing up in Finder, so I went to Disk Utility and tried to mount it.  No go.  So I tried repairing it, and it said it couldn't.  I'm not worried about the Time Machine backup since my iMac is find so I can just make a backup to a new external drive.  However, the encrypted sparse bundle disk image has some files in it that I don't have elsewhere.  Is there a way to recover these files without sending it in to a drive recovery service (since those would cost a LOT of money)?
