Tiger install DVD not recognized by G5

Well, this one really takes the cake. I have a G5 single processor. It has a drive that supposedly will read and write both CDs and DVDs, as confirmed by Apple System Profiler. It presently is on OS X 10.3.9 (Build 7W98). The original install disks were 10.3.5.
I just bought a Tiger 10.4 installation disk, which is actually a DVD disk. While the computer was running on 10.3.9, I inserted the Tiger installation disk per instructions. It never appeared on the desktop or finder windows. Eventually, it ejected by itself.
I then tried to boot from the installation DVD, holding down the C key. It would not boot. It eventually ejected by itself, and the computer booted from the internal hard drive.
I tried all the usual steps. I cleaned the DVD. I restarted the computer holding down control-s, and then ran /sbin/fsck. It said the drive is ok. I then booted from my DiskWarrior CD, and rebuilt the disk directory on the internal hard drive. Upon restarting with the internal hard drive, same result. The computer simply will not recognize the DVD at all. Yet, I put it in another Mac computer, and it did appear on the desktop (though I did not install there).
I assumed that if there was one thing that could be counted on to boot up the computer, it would be an OS X install disk. My assumption was wrong. Yet, I can boot the computer in 10.3.9.

I solved my own problem! On the Tiger page there is a link to if your install disk suddenly ejects. I followed their instructions to update my firmware for the DVD drive, and it worked.

  • Leopard does not recognize Tiger install DVD as startup disk

I upgraded my MBP to Leopard. After that, the MBP never recognize Tiger install DVD and Tiger installed extra HDD as startup disk. They have never appear in the startup disk window in system preference. and I tried to use the option key or c key at startup, but they also could not work (just start from Leopard installed internal HDD). On the other hand, Leopard install DVD has been recognized.
I could not find out the same problems in net work.
    Does anybody know good solution?
    Thanks.
    N.B.

In fact, this is the most disappointing feature in Leopard.
Under Tiger I had partitioned my hard disk, with OS 9 running on one partition.
The startup of clean OS 9 worked fine with OPTION key at startup. Now, OS 9 is not recognised any more, none of my old applications are, the volume is no longer recognised as startup option under preferences or when starting with the option key, and I cannot even try to reinstall OS 9 on the partition (in case something was damaged during the upgrade process), as the CD is not recognised when starting up with using the C key... Very frustrating, and I had not heard or read about this problem before.
Only solution right now seems to be> get as much as possible on a DVD or CD, move it to an older Mac, convert, if necessary (eg old Quicktake or PICT pictures, using Graphic Converter) and move them back to the leopard machine. What a waste of time.

  • Powerbook 15" won't restart from Tiger install DVD

    Hi,
I am trying to start up my powerbook from the Tiger install DVD in order to use the repair disk function of Disk Utility on my hard disk. I tried both rebooting while pressing the C key, as well as selecting the DVD from Startup Disk in System Preferences. In both, the outcome is the same:
I get the grey screen with the Apple, then it turns into a blue background on which there is a white window, which shows a very strange graphic. There are two complicated looking components to this graphic. The left one looks like a grey oval shape with complicated looking lines on it, and what looks like two batteries falling out of it. The numeral "1" is under this graphic. The right hand shape is also a grey oval with various lines on it, and contains a blinking red dot. The numeral "2" is under this graphic.
There is a greyed out arrow next to the "2".
At this point, the keyboard or the mouse do not work. There is a spinning circle under the graphic, and it keeps spinning while nothing further happens.
I have no idea what these graphics mean, and google has not revealed anything. Please help!
    Thanks

Powerbook 15" Hi Res 1.67 GHz 2 Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Update: I have figured out from further googling that the weird graphics are pictures of wireless mice and how to install batteries on them (?!). I have never owned a wireless mouse and certainly one has never been used on this computer. The current system on the powerbook is 10.4.9, and the install DVD for Tiger is 10.4. Is it too old to boot this machine? Is there some other way I can run the disk utility instead?

  • Reasonable pricing for Tiger install DVD?

(I'm not sure if this sould go here, but don't know where it would fit better)
I have a iMacG3 and I want to upgrade it to Tiger (leopard isn't going to work, the processor is only 400MHz)
but I don't know what sould be a reasonable price for the retail DVD
I want to get the DVD but I can't even find it and I don't feel like paying more then it's worth, especially sins I don't have that much anyway
    also I was wondering
I know a store that has the DVD, for the tec-support
and they can install it but I won't actually get the DVD,
but if I don't have the DVD but only the software, doesn't that mean I also wouldn't have a license? I want to get it legaly and I don't think that will be legal, anyone knows this for sure?

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
Also check this web store http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

  • ADE installed but not recognized

I am using Windows 10, a Nook, My Media Mall.  ADE is installed, my computer authorized and I am activated.  When I download an E book, it appears to be downloaded, but when I try "open with" the only option showing is Adobe Reader. Then, I look for other programs but ADE is not listed as an option.  Is there something I have not done?

Windows 7 and IE 11 ... I also use Firefox, for business only.

  • Tiger Install DVD

    Hi guys
I have lost my tiger install dvd in a recent house move and need to install tiger on my newly purchased iMac g4 flat panel.
I happen to have the install DVD's for my new macbook and wondered if there was anyway that I could use those to install onto the older imac?
    Thanks
    Garry

If you can wait that long, the Family Pack (5 licenses) of Leopard will be out in October so you can upgrade both the MacBook and the iMac G4 (assuming it meets the minimum specs) at the same time.

  • Broken Tiger Install DVD

    Hello,
Recently my Tiger Install DVD broke. I purchased it when it first came out last year. Is there any way to replace the DVD without purchasing a brand new one?
    Thanks!

I'd give Apple a call and play to their emotions. Maybe they'll replace it.
    Good luck!
    Steve M.
P.S. I advise users to make a copy of their install DVD (if they can, some of the install discs that come with new Macs are on the dual layer DVDs I believe and may be more difficult to copy). You can do this using Disk Utility and you will have a disc to keep in reserve.

  • Tiger install dvd does not boot

    hi,
i have an ibook g4 (latest model) and want to reinstall tiger.
the problem is that it doesnt boot the install dvd!
i tried to start the installation under tiger but after pressing "restart" my ibook was normally booting osx from hard disk.
i tried to fix the problem using "startup disk" but nothing happend.
i tried several key combos at startup:
    - "C"
    - "OPT"
    - "CMD-OPT-P-R"
    - "CMD-OPT-SHIFT-DELETE"
sometimes appears a little folder icon with a question mark and a mac symbol on it...
there seems not to be any firmware update availible for my ibook.
bootable linux discs for ppc (debian, ubuntu) are booting without any problems!
and of course my tiger disc is clean, seems to be undamaged and was shipped with my ibook g4.
    any ideas?
    thanks,
    ofp

"did it ever happen that apple shipped broken discs?"
Unfortunately yes. Especially with early versions of Tiger many mis-burned DVDs showed up. Apple did exchange them for new ones without problems though.

  • DVD--not recognized AND stuck in drive

I've had trouble with my G4 not recognizing DVDs. I just put one in that was burned at a store with a friend's videotape--it never showed up in the finder. When I launch Disk Utility, it hangs. I am using an older keyboard without the disk eject button; I can't get the disk to eject, can't drag it to the trash because it doesn't show up. When I reboot with the mouse button held down, the Mac won't start up--I just get a Windows-like gray screen of death.
I don't know what the drive is--it's an old Super Drive--because the Apple System Profiler also hangs when I click on the "Disc Burning" option.
How do I get the DVD out, and how do I get the G4 to recognize DVDs?
    Thanks for any help--Bob

    Hi-
Try and open the tower drive cover, and look for a small hole about the size of a paper clip, in the front of the dvd drive. Insert a straightened paper clip in the hole, and you should be able to open the tray.
You should then try your Tiger install disc. (While you're at it, boot from the install disk, and run Disk Utility to repair your hard drive).
If the install disk is read, then the drive is probably okay.
You may consider an "Archive and Install" reinstall of your OS X.
Prior to that, you may consider a reinstall of the OS 10.4.8 combo update:

Please post back with progress (or not).

  • Whats the difference between a German Tiger install DVD and a English one ?

    Title says it all really.
Apples online store gives an option of German or international English Tiger (Intel). If I get a German DVD (the local language) can I install in English or not?
Delivery time tot the international English goes up from 24hrs to 5 days
    TIA.

You can install English language files for Tiger from the German Tiger installation DVD. The difference between the packages is likely the fact that the documentation which comes with the package is in a different language; you will get German documentation with the German package, and English documentation with the English package.

  • [CLOSED] CD/DVDs not recognized (hal-less KDE)

    Hello everyone,
after the last system upgrade last week CDs and DVDs are not recognized when I insert them in the drive.
I'm running hal-less KDE 4.6 with udisks installed.
I removed hal after the upgrade, however the drive could not recognize the disks even when hal was running.
I searched the forum but haven't found any discussion reporting the very same problem.
Can anyone help me to debug this?
    Thanks!

I had the same / similar problem. Just that given that I build my own kernel I thought this was what was causing it. That's why I rebuilded the kernel and enabled ISO and UDF modules in Filesystems. If you're using the standard kernel I have no idea what could be the problem.

  • Install disc not recognized

I just put a new hard drive in my MBP 15", and need/want to install Leopard. My Leopard dvd is an upgrade disc, so I have first to install Tiger. However, when I insert my Tiger dvd, I get a flashing dark folder icon with a question mark. Presumably, the start-up info isn't found my Tiger dvd. Any ideas why? I get the same result when I try to start up from a Jaguar cd too. Pete

    Pete N wrote:
I should add that the Tiger install disc does work on my wife's laptop--at least to the extent that I can start up from the disc, something that I can't do on my computer. I guess it's time to dive back into my computer and make sure that I didn't leave something disconnected...
After installing the new drive, did you reset the PRAM and NVRAM?
It's a remote possibility since you can't boot from the CDs, but worth a try.
It's also possible that your optical drive is either bad, or as you suggest, may have a cable improperly attached.
An improperly attached cable could also prevent the system from booting normally.
When it boots, do you hear the normal chimes, indicating the system passsed the POST? If not, the chime count will tell you what might be wrong.
Another test would be to see if you can boot into an external drive.

  • CD/DVD not recognized when booted in OS 9

    Hi,
I have a PB G4 667 titanium (the gigabite ethernet model) that can boot into OS 9. I normally run OS 10.4.5. I recently re-installed OS 9.2.2 using a generic install disk (not the one that came with this specific model). It boots fine into OS 9, but it will not recognize CD's or DVD's or some extensions, like Apple DVD player (which says it is missing a .lib file.
I also had a new upgraded SuperDrive (MCE Technologies) before I had to re-install OS 9. I didn't try to run OS 9 and see if the drive worked after it was installed, so I don't know if that might be the problem. I tried to load the driver into the extension folder, but there was no folder called "Supporting Authoring files" like the read me text said there should be for OS 9.
Any suggestions as to how to get OS 9 to recognize my CD/DVD's?

    PB G4 Ti 667 Gig-Ethernet   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   I boot into OS 9 on occasion

HI, marbot61. It sounds to me as though the problem is not that discs aren't recognized, but that your drive itself is not supported by your OS 9 installation — and perhaps it isn't supported in OS 9, period. Call MCE and ask for help setting OS 9 up to support the drive.
If you used a model-specific OS 9 installer disk that came with some other Mac, rather than a retail OS 9.2.1 disc (white, with a big gold 9 on its label) or the installer disk that originally came with your Powerbook, that may be the problem. It may be essential for you to use the disk that was shipped with the Tibook to install OS 9 on it. You should never expect to get a functional OS 9 installation from an installer disk that is specific to any model other than the one you're installing it on, and MCE will be justified in telling you they can't support your drive until you have a proper OS 9 installation on the Powerbook.

  • Can Tiger install DVD "fix" Lion Drive?

i seem to be running into an issue i don't understand and i am not sure if this is a user created problem of what is going on.
i have a mac pro with 4 disks in it. i have MOVED the home folder to my "Data" disk because i like the idea of storing data on one drive and the OS on another. i run multiple backups including two internal backups of each of the drives listed below.
right now the DATA DRIVE is showing as needing repair but i cannot seem to find a way to repair it.
i cannot boot from the install disks (they seem to be Tiger install disks) so i tried just putting them into the machine but when i click on a "read me app" it says it is a Power PC app and i can't run it.
if i PULL the bad disk and put in a new one - with the idea to clone the data back to the disk from internal clone i can't boot up. if i MOVE the CLONED Data Disk to the slot of the original Data Drive and put a new disk in the CLONED disk spot - with the idea to trick the computer into booting so i can CLONE the clone back to the CLONED disks original location (whew!) i cannot boot.
now i am thinking to actually pull the Data Drive altogether and try to restart.
OR possibly i can POINT the computer to the HOME FOLDER on the CLONE and pull the DATA DRIVE and see if i can boot this way?
anyway, anyone know why i cannot boot from the DVD's? i guess this is an issue of my current OS not being compatible in some way with the DVD OS??

    ok. will do.
any insight on this part below just for my own peace of mind? i mean, i can see something coming into play here but - well i guess if i don't have the /original/ drive (in bay 3) that the home folder resides upon in the exact same bay that it is looking for then this may come into play even though i am technically booting off a drive that still exists (the drive in bay 3)? i find this a little confusing especially if i have a clone on the same kind of drive and i put this cloned drive in the bay where the bad drive was.
"...but may prevent you from logging into the computer."
also can i please ask if you think i could set the home folder to the CLONE of the drive in bay 3 (the drive in bay 4) and boot into that to repair the drive in bay 3? or at this point just best to bring it into the mac store??

  • Cannot boot on Tiger Install DVD

    Hi,
I have a PowerPC G5 2x2Ghz and I'm trying to reinstall Tiger on one of the two hard drives.
Here is my problem : no matter if I reboot from the Preferences or by pressing C or ALT, if I try to boot on the Install DVD, after the Apple shows up, a dark gray layer appears on my screen, saying that I need to restart my computer by holding down the power button for several seconds.
On the top of that, I have some complicated line :
    Example :
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xFFFF0003) : 0x300 - Data access
Latest stack backtrace for cpu 0:
    Kernel version :
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.0.0 : Sat Mar 26 14:15:22 PST 2005; root:xnu-792.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC
panic : We are hanging here.
Any idea of what I can do about that? I really need to reinstall Tiger

You are having a kernel panic. Have you recently made any hardware changes like adding RAM?
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.
