Tiger install error on disc 2

Hello ... I am trying to install tiger on a macbook pro and get an error (bomfileerror 5) on the 2nd disc.
I do not need the xtra software it's trying to install & I would like to just re-start the install however, after I receive the error on disc #2, it tells me to insert #2 & try again which just keeps failing in the exact same way. I have tried resetting PRAM, NVRAM & SMC with no luck as the screen returns to the installer asking for disc #2. Does anyone know how I might interrupt the installer ?? Everything in the apple menu is grayed out. Any help is MOST appreciated !

*Hi mikm, Welcome* to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
So you are currently in Leopard. Do you have a FWHD for Time Machine? How big is it?
If it were me, I would get a rather large FWHD and then multi partition it. 1= large one for Time Machine. Note that TM is not a bootable clone. 2= Leopard Clone. 3= Tiger Install—now you have both worlds. 4= Tiger Clone. If you don't know about cloning, post back and help should arrive quickly.
Try a customized Leopard Install where you don't intstall the stuff on Disc 2.
When I get around to Leopard, that's what I am going to do.
Good Luck, JP

  • Re-install error on Disc Two - Tiger

    Hello,
I backed up the contents of my hard drive then proceeded to erase and re-install tiger in order to clear my drive of unwanted clutter. 3/4 the way into installing disc two I got an "error during installation" message. After this message, the mac ejects disc two and asks me to re-insert disc two. It happened three times at the same point as it was installing a garageband application.
This is the second time I have used my install DVDs, the first being when I first received my mac. After my initial installation I left the discs in their original packaging, inside the 'everything else' sleeve and its been there since now. The disc does not show any scratches. It is grey and has Disc version 1.0 (2Z691-5975-A) written on it. Disc one shows it was Tiger 10.4.9
My problem is that I cannot get past the Disc two part of the install, which leaves my mac unusable due to a faulty disc. Is there any way I can get a replacement of disc two so I can complete the installation?
    I saw a similar post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1437083
    But their question wasn't answered....
    Thanks for your help,
    C

By all means get a replacement for disc 2. In the meantime if you perform a custom install, omitting a lot of fonts and application extras, you can get to the point where it won't ask for disc 2 to install extras and at least you can get your computer up and working again. Some of those extras are things such as iTunes which you can download. Others are unique to the disc. In that case if you can't wait you can try extracting them using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com>. It may be the errors on disc 2 are too much for the installer which is very fussy but may not affect some of the others things you could isolate with Pacifist.

  • Original 10.4 Tiger install disc keeps ejecting

    Hello,
I am trying to re-install my 2007 white MacBook to its original state so I can sell it.  It currently has Lion installed, when I insert the original Apple 10.4 Tiger CD/DVD into the super drive the disc just keeps ejecting.  All other discs work and the install disc does not eject from my MacMini.
    Why is this happening?
How can I get Tiger installed on it from the original disc?
Many thanks in advance for any help provided.

When trying to boot with a disc, it's say that the disc isn't compatible with your machine.  ( I thing strongly. )
After you start up the machine normally,  can you insert the disc?
You can manually delete things.  You might miss a few things but you should get most.

    Hello queenabs,
It sounds like you are trying to burn a playlist to a disc in iTunes, but you are getting the error, "disc burner or software not found."  I found a couple of resources that I think might help with an error like this.
I recommend starting with the steps in this article:

  • Tiger Install Discs

    Hi.
Does anyone know where I can get retail discs for Tiger? I've got an old iMac which won't run Leopard so I want to get Tiger on it.
    Thanks
    Chris

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available from Apple. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.

  • I/O Errors  on AW files after clean Tiger Install on Pismo

I did everything right that I can think of...
I used target disk mode on the Pismo to back everything up to my G4.
Wiped the hard drive and did a fresh install of Tiger, iWork, Office, and AppleWorks.
    Updated all the software.
    Repaired permissions.
Copied all my wife's files from the desktop to a small, portable hard drive.
Copied the files from the hard drive to her Pismo.
Sent her to work with directions to write down anything she needed changed.
She called me later telling me she was having problems opening an AW file she needed. I tried replicating the problem on the G4 which had a fresh Tiger install the week before. The file wouldn't open. AW wouldn't open either.
Tried Peggy's suggestion about trashing AW preferences, which got AW to open. But the file still gives I/O errors when I try to open it. In fact every AW file I backed up from her Pismo gives I/O errors. Pages and Word files open fine. The only data that will not open from her backed up files are the AW files.
    Any ideas?

I'll bet that/those files were created with ClarisWorks 4 or earlier. AppleWorks 6.2.9 gives an I/O error when trying to open about half of these files. Any other version of AppleWorks 6, including the Classic component of AppleWorks 6.2.8 can. You have several options, none ideal.
    1. "Force" AppleWorks 6 to open in Classic. Make sure you quit AppleWorks in OS X first. They will both run, but I've had problems with odd errors if I do, so I don't.
    2. Go back to AppleWorks 6.2.4, open the files, save them & then you can reopen them in AW 6.2.9.
    3. Install AppleWorks 5 to run in Classic, open -> save & then the files will open in AW 6.2.9. This is my favorite solution because I can have AW 5 & AW 6.2.9 running at the same time.
    4. Send a file to me, peggy_discussions(at)mac(dot)com. I'll open, save, open, save as in #3 & send it back to you. Give the e-mail a subject of AW 6 I/O error. However, I am currently in San Francisco & won't be able to do anything with files until late Thursday.

  • Tiger Install disc copy

I have 3 G4s, and the problem here is that I want to upgrade my Quicksilver 733 MHz from Panther to Tiger.
I'm trying to install my copy of OS 10.4 , an install disc copy of the OS that came with my second MDD when I bought it second hand, and which, by the way was used to upgrade my first MDD from Panther.
The QS, which was given to me, accepted an upgrade using my OS 10.3 install disc, But what happens when I try the Tiger disc copy is that although I can see the package, and a dmg opens with the install icon, It always returns to just that, no matter what I try - restarting with C key, clicking on the install icon,or attempting to restart with disc from System Preferences. I'm not able to install.
Is there a workaround? Worst comes to worse, could I clone Tiger from the machine it works on and somehow apply it to the QS?
    many thanks,
    K

I have 3 G4s, and the problem here is that I want to upgrade my Quicksilver 733 MHz from Panther to Tiger.
You have to buy a retail (black) Tiger install DVD.
I'm trying to install my copy of OS 10.4 , an install disc copy of the OS that came with my second MDD when I bought it second hand,
THe install disc that ships with a MDD will only work with a MDD.
and which, by the way was used to upgrade my first MDD from Panther.
and which, by the way, violated the license agreement.
    Is there a workaround?
    Yes; buy the correct disc.

  • Superdrive will read Tiger Install Disc, but not DVD's

I recently had my hard drive crash, so I installed a new one because I didn't have time to wait. The installation went fine, but now when I try to install Leopard, it won't read any DVD's, so I had to install TIger back on my Macbook. Are there any reasons that when I installed a fresh new hard drive that would make my superdrive need some other update or something, because it won't read DVD's?
    Thanks

Are there any reasons that when I installed a fresh new hard drive that would make my superdrive need some other update or something, because it won't read DVD's?
    Hello smp450!
No, the new HD only needed to be reformatted for your Mac. Your original grey-label Tiger Install Discs are also DVDs, same as Leopard.
You may have missed the answer you received from Smokerz in your previous thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6686146#6686146
Now that you've installed the original Tiger OS onto your new HD, are you able to use the Leopard DVD to upgrade? If so, then there is no longer a problem, right? If there is still a problem, where did you purchase the Leopard DVD?

  • Can't install Tiger from a Retail Disc???

I have a current mbp (15" 2.2Ghz 4GB memory, etc) and I lost my system discs. Not a big deal (or so I thought) I'll just pick up a retail copy of Tiger. For whatever reason it won't let me install form that disc. It says my system is not compatible with that version of OS X.
What do I need to do? I've tried putting it in while booted into OS X and double clicking the install now icon, I've tried holding "C" while on bootup and it still won't let me install from teh Retail Disc...any thoughts???

You need to replace your discs as the retail version will only install to a PowerPC Mac. Simply call AppleCare with your situation and they'll send you new ones at a nominal fee (around $US30). To save you some time, just be sure to have your serial number and proof of purchase handy as they'll ask you for it.

  • Apple Hardware Test : Use original Tiger Instal disc, or new Leopard disc?

    Hi,
I'm STILL trouble shooting my slow iMac. I figure this may point me in the general right direction.
My question is if my computer came with Tiger, and Leopard is now installed, which startup disc should I use?
    thanks

    Hi:
Try the OS X 10.5 DVD (boot while holding down the "D" key). I have, frankly, never tried to run an "old" hardware test on a "new" computer, but nothing should be harmed by trying.
Incidentally, slow is usually software-related not hardware-related.

  • Reinstall max os error on disc 2

I have a MacBook Pro that I inherited from someone at work.  They also gave me the Max OS X Discs (1 & 2), that they got with the computer.  Max OS Version 10.4.9.  They had configured the Mac to run Windows, So I had to repartition the HD before I could get the install to work.  I have anther Mac Book Pro that I could look at to make sure the partition was correct.  Before doing this, the first disc would complete in error, now the first disc completes and I am prompted for the disc 2.  It goes through the whole process of installing components from disc 2, but after 40 minutes, I get an error dialog that errors were encountered and the only option I have is to start over.  I have tried starting over a couple of times, each time it only prompts for disc 2.  I looked at the logs from the installer and the only errors encountered were with iPhoto one other application.  Is there a way to break out of the install and see if the only thing that is not working are the 2 products that encountered errors during the disc 2 processing?  Any other suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Steve

This query would get better exposure on the Tiger forum         Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger
You might want to run a Hardware test just to make sure the Mac is running properly.
    Additional Information
Apple Hardware Test is included on the DVDs that are shipped with some Macintosh computers. If the copy on your hard drive becomes unavailable, use the DVDs to run Apple Hardware Test.
For Intel-based Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.4 or earlier, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 and should be included with your computer.
For Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.5 to 10.6.7, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Applications Install Disc 2 and should be included with your computer.
For some Apple computers that shipped with OS X Lion, if Apple Hardware Test cannot be found on the hard drive, an Internet-based version starts up instead.
The Hardware Profile tab of AHT provides specific information about your computer. To see this information, click the tab, then select a subject area on the left.

  • How do I resolve Tiger installation errors?

    System:
    Ibook G3 with OS X 10.2 (Panther)
    640 MB RAM
    Task:
Upgrading to OS X 10.4 (Tiger) with OS X Tiger install disks sent to me from Apple.
    Problem:
Install seems to be working fine but then gives an error message.
    Error message:
"There were Errors during the installation." "Please try again."
    Attempts:
-Disk Repair with Disk Utility -> There were no errors.
-Permissions Repair with Disk Utility -> Fixed some permissions, but still doesn't work.
    Symptoms:
-When I try installing again, it always asks for disk 2 (unless I boot directly into disk 1 to try it all from the beginning)
-I cannot boot back into the operating system. Even if I try starting up without the disks, it runs the installer and asks for disk 2.

    Hello, here's what I'd try...
      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.
That second Disc thing happens frequently, the best way around it is to do a Custom install, and eliminate enough Printer Drivers, Languages, Fonts, and Applications you don't need... then it may skip #2 altogether.

  • From-Scratch Tiger install and Classic

I recently tried to upgrade my iMac to Tiger. I got disk errors, the phone tech said I had to erase and install.
So, I erased and installed, and now I can't get Classic to work.
When I put in the Software Install and Restore disc that came with my iMac, and run the Install Applications & Classic Support program, it runs through it's little thing, finishes up, and then pops up a screen that sais "Welcome to Mac OSX Follow these instructions to restore software on your computer."
When I click on the Continue button, it asks me for my admin password, and then it brings up a window that sais "Insert the disc labeled with this illustration" [picture of a CD icon above a big dot], and a Quit button.
That disc is already in the drive. If I eject it and put it back in, nothing happens, it just sits there at that window asking for the disc.
How do I get Classic back onto this computer? It came on the computer, and was working just fine before I tried to upgrade to Tiger.

That's what had me confused, too.
The DVD disc is from when I bought my iMac. It's 10.2.7.
I had to erase my hard drive to put on 10.4.
What ended up working was re-installing 10.2.7 on my external firewire drive, booting to the external firewire drive, THEN running the "Install Applications & Classic Support", THEN running the Software Restore choosing only the Classic Support option, THEN copying over the System Folder for OS9 back onto my regular drive, then rebooting again onto the regular drive to run 10.4.5.
What a PITA that the Software Restore program from my original system disc won't function correctly in Tiger.
If I hadn't had an external drive handy, I'd have been up the proverbial creek.

  • 10.1 upgrade install error message: "error cannot write file"

I have just installed a clean copy of os 9.2 onto my powerbook g4. When I try to upgrade with the included cd mac os x 10.1 it errors out about half way through the install. Hi Again atadams77!
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.
