Tiger install workaround needed

I want to install Tiger on Laptop but the Install Discs are not working - I have read that is because the Install Discs are not retail
I am therfore considering a work around option - using an iMac hooked up to the Laptop and running the installation using Pacifist
My question is this though - Will the OS still function on a Powerbook - I don't see why the OS should be any different for a Laptop or an iMac
Has anyone any warnings or advice on this issue
Are there any known issues on this subject

It is possible to find used Tiger retail discs. Yes maybe but I have always - and will continue to always buy direct from the source or not at all. I do not trust resellers who are dubious and not authorized. When I find websites that claim to be official Adobe Resllers of CS5 I am not tempted to buy from them because they are generaly 100% fake frauds and thus need to be avoided.
ask us to help you break the law - That's just not true is it : ) I never made such a request and since Apple claim they have no involvement in these forums as they are meant for user to user discussions I deem Apple to be irrelevant in such discussions. I am not asking Apple Employees or Reps. I was asking for help and advice from other users. I needed help and workarounds to get Logic Studio working since the install discs created problems. Other users helped me with that and I used Pacifist to repair the installation, that is not illegal and from that I was able to help other users who encountered that same problem. This issue is exactly the same thing.
circumventing protection Apple has put in place to protects its products - it no longer offers this product so there is nothing for it to protect anymore - Apple deem the products to be obsolete, no longer supported, apple do not care about these products - they are effectively dead and buried as far as they are concerned.
Secondly, it is turning into a topic discussing Apple policies and practices which is also in violation of the TOU. WhichSir is the direction that you chose to take the topic and I have politely responded - I merely could not understand why the discs would not install and wanted to know how I could solve the issue, that is why I asked other users for advice.
justify breaking the law - I did not justify breaking laws - I merely pointed out a little Irony about the matter which was meant to be light hearted but let's remember Apple did make the admission that they had been guilty as charged and that is a fact. The point is that if I could buy the discs from Apple then I would but I can't and so . . . rather than throw away an expensive machine I merely wanted to find a way to keep it useful and working effectively and that's just common sense basics.
Even if you stole from a thief, you would be a thief too - Well I can assure you I have never stolen anything from anyone and that's just a hypothetical event you chose to use to insult me and that's just a cheap shot.
And it's not their fault, it's yours for buying equipment before you investigated the limitations to what you could do with it and how. You Sir are so wrong. Apple choose to support or not support, to sell or not to sell, to enable use or destroy it and in this case, they decided to make the OS unavailable and they chose to ditch PPC and hence kill off these products. No one asked Apple to drop support, they do so to maximize profits just like any other business does and they are well within their rights to do so.
When we buy Apple products we never know how long they will be supported and none of us know what Apple plan to be doing next. I did not know that Apples Mirror Agent would cause my iMac Hard Drive to crash and burn at great cost and expense to myself and nor did I expect to pay £800 for a Lab Data Recovery bill but that happened. Apple denied all blame and treated me with utter contempt and I did not know that would happen either but it did. When I subscribed to MobileMe I never knew it would never operate as it should and I never predicted that I was just going to be wasting my money for services not supllied but that happened. I never knew that some of Logics features would fail when I purchased the Studio but they did and yes, I had to live with that failure like many others do.
Also you assume knowledge that I bought the Powerbook and you are wrong on that count as well. It was a gift for which I was grateful, regardless of its limitations Sir.
It honestly wouldn't surpise me if this whole topic got taken down - Fine, let it be, no one would care anyway and if that's the case then no further discussion is needed or neccessary.

  • Tiger install not needed?

I have OS X 2.8, but needed MPEG-2 for some dvd work and it's not in 2.8, but is on Tiger, so I bought Tiger but looked at the install procedure which is pretty massive and I really don't want to disturb my FCP files, etc. So I'm wondering if all I really need is to get MPEG-2 on it's own and just keep 2.8 for now as it works fine for my purposes. Also not sure if there's any issues upgrading from 2.8 to Tiger? Suggestions greatly appreciated.

thanks, that's what it seems like, I haven't opened Tiger so can return it to Amazon for full refund, but I'll wait till I try it with my OSX 2.8 and mpeg-2 download to see if it works. I don't particularly like Streamclip as it's hard to figure out how to use and there's no support as it's free.

I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
After a few weeks the HDD failed. I bought a new disk, installed it and trued to install Leopard, but the  install fails reporting "insufficient memory".
I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

  • Installing 9ias step by step and/or workarounds needed!

    Hi:
Is there any document (technet or metalink) explaining step by step instructions and/or workarounds needed to install 9iAS infrastructure and complete ias (forms, reports, portal, wireless) on same machine (WINDOWS 2000)?
I've installed it on one machine but my REPORTS server do not work and i don't know anything else to do to put it working (the reports server startup and after that shutdowns immediatly without any warning).
Is there any issue found after releasing 9iAS for Windows 2000?
    Would appreciate any help.

This will definitely be my endgame.
But since this code just came out, I am not willing to jump direct to it, yet.
Also, I haven't found much documentation on how to make this transition, i.e., exactly what settings on the ASA will make it replace the IPN, and if any changes need to be made on the Admin/Policy/MnT server.
Then as soon as I make that transition, I will be able to rebuild the 3315 (have 2) to be failover between the two locations.

  • Stuck on Disk 2 install- Tiger install- Please help

I received a bad disk #2 with my mac pro, and am unable to install tiger (then upgrade to leopard ). Apple sent a replacement dvd, but because my system is still looking for "disk #2" this isn't working.
Is there a way to bypass this install and start from scratch? Can I boot from the new dvd? I have 4 new drives and will not miss any data if I do this.

First, even if it is an upgrade Leopard DVD, the installer system check should be able to detect the presence of Tiger on any of the internal hard drives, or bootable drive that is connected, and allow you to install Leopard on the same drive, or on another blank drive of the same system.
Also, I haven't done it recently, but I believe that if you limit your Tiger installation so that you only install the OS and not the other applications and stuff, such an install will be completed using only Install Disc 1, and you will never see a request to insert Install Disc 2.
Then you can go ahead and upgrade to Leopard on that same drive, or on an entirely different drive. Tiger only needs to be detected on one HD, not all HDs. Once Leopard is installed and operating, you'll be able to return to your system's grey-labeled Install Disc 1, and WITHOUT booting from it, simply insert into optical drive and open the disc so that you can double click on the second install package that doesn't include OS X.
Booting from the install disc is only necessary to install OS X, not the iLife apps and other stuff.
If you don't want to keep Tiger installed, it isn't necessary for Tiger to remain, only to be there when you're trying to install off of the Leopard Upgrade DVD. So you could stick in a small spare drive, put Tiger on it, use the Leopard Upgrade DVD to install Leopard onto a separate HD, and then pull the Tiger HD and put it on a shelf for possible future use, if bad luck should demand.

  • Original 10.4 Tiger install disc keeps ejecting

    Hello,
I am trying to re-install my 2007 white MacBook to its original state so I can sell it.  It currently has Lion installed, when I insert the original Apple 10.4 Tiger CD/DVD into the super drive the disc just keeps ejecting.  All other discs work and the install disc does not eject from my MacMini.
    Why is this happening?
How can I get Tiger installed on it from the original disc?
Many thanks in advance for any help provided.

When trying to boot with a disc, it's say that the disc isn't compatible with your machine.  ( I thing strongly. )
After you start up the machine normally,  can you insert the disc?
You can manually delete things.  You might miss a few things but you should get most.

  • Booting from Panther Cd from a Tiger installed Mac

I have a Lacie FW HD partitioned as 1: OS9, 2:Panther and 3:Spare Storage Capacity and I need to do an archive install of Panther, but I find that the Panther Boot CD will NOT boot up on any Mac with Tiger installed.
Is this a huge Tiger bug or a bad CD?
    Anyone else noticed this?

    Hi, FastMac.
I still suspect it's not a bad or defective CD but the age of the CD w.r.t. the Macs you are trying to boot from it: the Macs probably have later firmware versions than that specified on the CD.
Obviously, if the CD itself has scratches, cracks, or other visible surface defects that could prevent one from booting from it.
However, you can see if the CD itself is bad by mounting it and then running Verify Disk against the CD using the First Aid tab in Disk Utility. If Verify Disk gives the CD a clean bill of health, then it's very likely the firmware level incompatibility I discussed before.
    Good luck!

  • Problems with Tiger Install

Previously having OS 10.2, I tried to install 10.4 from an installation disc over 10.2, and it failed to install. After failing to install, the computer made me restart, and now it goes to a screen giving an error about a Mac OS 10.4 and 10.5 Driver. The Computer can't find drivers for 10.4 and 10.5. I cannot boot from an Apple I-care disc, the machine tries to boot into an OS, but there is a question mark, instead of an OS Icon in the middle of the screen, and then shortly after comes the error message. The machine locks up.
I thought maybee the problem was intalling OS10.4 as an update, because there was a gap between version previously installed and the new one, but the installation guide says OS 10.2 or later is updatable.
    Please Help.

    Hi Brandon,
If you are not able to start up from your installation DVD there might be a problem with your DVD drive.
If this is the case then there are two things you might do:
1- (and most obvious) take your Mac in for repair.
2- Fire Wire Target Disk Mode... (For this option you will need a second Mac)
    - Target Disk Mode will basically turn your iMac into an external HD, by doing this you will be able to use a second Mac with a working disc drive to start up from the Tiger DVD and then install it on your iMac.
If you are going to do this it is important that no other FireWire devices are connected to either of the computers.
How to start your iMac in Target Disk Mode: Start up the computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears.
Once you have done this connect it to the second Mac (with FireWire)
Now insert the Tiger DVD in the second Mac, when the disk appears on the Desktop open it and double click on "install"
A window with a restart button will appear... click and restart (there will be no need to hold the "c" key.
Once the computer has started up from the Tiger DVD you need to find UTILITIES or TOOLS (i can remember the exact name) on the top bar
Click on it and open Disk Utility then follow the steps of my previous post.
Make sure that you have selected the correct HD to erase and install (it will not be the first one on the list)
    Good Luck.

  • Pismo G3 Tiger Install Disk won't boot

Hey, I just got a G3 Pismo off eBay and I am having trouble reinstalling Tiger onto it. It's a 500 Mhz G3 and it's been upgraded to 1 gig of Ram and a 100 gig hard drive. It's currently running 10.4.11, so I know it can handle it. Whenever I try installing it just hangs on a white screen after start up. I've tried from both the internal DVD drive and an external DVD drive. One thing I have noticed is that the install disk won't show up as an option in the Startup Disk panel when it's in the external drive, even though it will mount normally.
I've tried booting as the startup disk from it's current install and from Os 9.2.2 but no luck. I've reset the PRAM/NVRAM and reset the PMU and still nothing.
    Any ideas?

Are you using a retail Tiger install DVD (black with silver X)? A gray, model specific installer for a different model Mac won't work.
I suspect your external DVD drive is connected via USB, which can't be used for a boot drive. You need an external Firewire drive if you want to boot from a DVD/CD.
What's wrong with the 10.4.11 OS currently installed? We might can recommend some fixes if there are problems.

  • Tiger install error on disc 2

Hello ... I am trying to install tiger on a macbook pro and get an error (bomfileerror 5) on the 2nd disc.
I do not need the xtra software it's trying to install & I would like to just re-start the install however, after I receive the error on disc #2, it tells me to insert #2 & try again which just keeps failing in the exact same way. I have tried resetting PRAM, NVRAM & SMC with no luck as the screen returns to the installer asking for disc #2. Does anyone know how I might interrupt the installer ?? Everything in the apple menu is grayed out. Any help is MOST appreciated !

*Hi mikm, Welcome* to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
So you are currently in Leopard. Do you have a FWHD for Time Machine? How big is it?
If it were me, I would get a rather large FWHD and then multi partition it. 1= large one for Time Machine. Note that TM is not a bootable clone. 2= Leopard Clone. 3= Tiger Install—now you have both worlds. 4= Tiger Clone. If you don't know about cloning, post back and help should arrive quickly.
Try a customized Leopard Install where you don't intstall the stuff on Disc 2.
When I get around to Leopard, that's what I am going to do.

  • Tiger install from another computer

    Hi Everybody,
I want to make a clean install fot Tiger on my Powerbook but I don't have a DVD drive in it but I have a second iBook G3 with DVD drive. My question is; how to install Tiger from the iBook on the Powerbook using a firewire connection, what are the procedures I have to follow.
    Thanks for your help,
    The Macuser

I think you may have it the wrong way round?
This is how I think it should go - no doubt someone will tell me if I am wrong!
    1. Start the computer that needs Tiger.
    2. Connect the computers with a FW cable and start up the Mac with the DVD drive, holding down the T key. (The installation DVD should have been inserted previously before the Mac was shut down).
    3. The DVD equipped computer will have a blank screen except for the FW symbol(s) whilst the non-DVD Mac will display on its desktop the HD and DVD drive of the DVD-Mac.
    4. Double click the symbol of the Tiger Install disk (on your non-Tiger Mac) and when it opens follow the instructions.
    5. When Tiger is installed, unmount the DVD-computer's HD and DVD drive by dragging them to the trash.
    6. The DVD-computer can then be shut down by holding down the power button.
    7. Disconnect the FW cable.
    Ian.

Is this a Wireless KB you have? Many aren't recognized until after booting.
Hmmm, you've got the firmware Update needed for the AGP to install/use 10.4...
I think I'd try this, worked for me on 3 such macs...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, then choose MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Partition tab.
    6. Click Erase & look for Security Options. choose Zero 1 pass."

Hopefully then a fresh install will work.

  • I/O Errors  on AW files after clean Tiger Install on Pismo

I did everything right that I can think of...
I used target disk mode on the Pismo to back everything up to my G4.
Wiped the hard drive and did a fresh install of Tiger, iWork, Office, and AppleWorks.
    Updated all the software.
    Repaired permissions.
Copied all my wife's files from the desktop to a small, portable hard drive.
Copied the files from the hard drive to her Pismo.
Sent her to work with directions to write down anything she needed changed.
She called me later telling me she was having problems opening an AW file she needed. I tried replicating the problem on the G4 which had a fresh Tiger install the week before. The file wouldn't open. AW wouldn't open either.
Tried Peggy's suggestion about trashing AW preferences, which got AW to open. But the file still gives I/O errors when I try to open it. In fact every AW file I backed up from her Pismo gives I/O errors. Pages and Word files open fine. The only data that will not open from her backed up files are the AW files.
    Any ideas?

I'll bet that/those files were created with ClarisWorks 4 or earlier. AppleWorks 6.2.9 gives an I/O error when trying to open about half of these files. Any other version of AppleWorks 6, including the Classic component of AppleWorks 6.2.8 can. You have several options, none ideal.
    1. "Force" AppleWorks 6 to open in Classic. Make sure you quit AppleWorks in OS X first. They will both run, but I've had problems with odd errors if I do, so I don't.
    2. Go back to AppleWorks 6.2.4, open the files, save them & then you can reopen them in AW 6.2.9.
    3. Install AppleWorks 5 to run in Classic, open -> save & then the files will open in AW 6.2.9. This is my favorite solution because I can have AW 5 & AW 6.2.9 running at the same time.
    4. Send a file to me, peggy_discussions(at)mac(dot)com. I'll open, save, open, save as in #3 & send it back to you. Give the e-mail a subject of AW 6 I/O error. However, I am currently in San Francisco & won't be able to do anything with files until late Thursday.

  • Can Tiger install DVD "fix" Lion Drive?

i seem to be running into an issue i don't understand and i am not sure if this is a user created problem of what is going on.
i have a mac pro with 4 disks in it. i have MOVED the home folder to my "Data" disk because i like the idea of storing data on one drive and the OS on another. i run multiple backups including two internal backups of each of the drives listed below.
right now the DATA DRIVE is showing as needing repair but i cannot seem to find a way to repair it.
i cannot boot from the install disks (they seem to be Tiger install disks) so i tried just putting them into the machine but when i click on a "read me app" it says it is a Power PC app and i can't run it.
if i PULL the bad disk and put in a new one - with the idea to clone the data back to the disk from internal clone i can't boot up. if i MOVE the CLONED Data Disk to the slot of the original Data Drive and put a new disk in the CLONED disk spot - with the idea to trick the computer into booting so i can CLONE the clone back to the CLONED disks original location (whew!) i cannot boot.
now i am thinking to actually pull the Data Drive altogether and try to restart.
OR possibly i can POINT the computer to the HOME FOLDER on the CLONE and pull the DATA DRIVE and see if i can boot this way?
anyway, anyone know why i cannot boot from the DVD's? i guess this is an issue of my current OS not being compatible in some way with the DVD OS??

    ok. will do.
any insight on this part below just for my own peace of mind? i mean, i can see something coming into play here but - well i guess if i don't have the /original/ drive (in bay 3) that the home folder resides upon in the exact same bay that it is looking for then this may come into play even though i am technically booting off a drive that still exists (the drive in bay 3)? i find this a little confusing especially if i have a clone on the same kind of drive and i put this cloned drive in the bay where the bad drive was.
"...but may prevent you from logging into the computer."
also can i please ask if you think i could set the home folder to the CLONE of the drive in bay 3 (the drive in bay 4) and boot into that to repair the drive in bay 3? or at this point just best to bring it into the mac store??

  • Getting CD's for Tiger Install?

I have a combo drive (no DVD drive), Is there any other way to upgrade to Tiger 10.4 without having to send my Tiger install DVD to apple and paying an extra 10 bucks to get the CD's for installation?
Also after Tiger is installed will there be a problem switching back and forth between Tiger and OS9? (I go back to OS9 for Pro tools which I also need to upgrade.)
    Thanks for your help!

Combo drives are DVD drives, they just can't burn DVDs. But they can play and boot off DVD. It is CD-RW drives that have no DVD component that can't boot off DVD. So you should be able to boot off the Tiger retail disks if you do indeed have an Apple shipped Combo drive. Only most third party, USB, CD-RW CD-R, and CD-ROM drives can't boot off the Tiger installation disk on a PowerPC Mac if that's what you have. So please clarify which optical drive you have?
And no installing Tiger as an Archive and Install won't affect your ability to boot Mac OS 9. If you erase and install, or use Disk Utility to erase the hard drive, you will need to install the Mac OS 9 drivers to later install Mac OS 9 to be able to boot off Mac OS 9. Installing the Mac OS 9 drivers is done by Disk Utility:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75275
Upgrading from 10.2 (which your profile says you have) to 10.4 is usually possible with an Archive and Install. Sometimes that does not work, and then you are forced to erase and install. It is for that reason I recommend you follow this upgrade process I've written* to the letter to avoid problems:
