Tiger Killed All User Settings & Registrations: Recovery Ideas?

Booted up today to find every single user setting hosed. Dock was in default setting with bad app links, all bookmarks on Firefox gone, all email settings erased. All software registrations nada. The works.
System was shut down normally last night. I regularly maintain with Cocktail and Disk Utility.
Repairs begun:
Disk Warrior, which found some issues and repaired (apparently unrelated to the problem at hand). Then ran Disk Utility, no problems found. Still hosed.
I had been running Tiger for about two weeks, installing 10.4 from DVD and upgrading by the book. Have now returned to the safety of 10.3.9
Anyone heard of this issue, or have any suggestions on what happened or how to return to original? As this was a test of the new OS, my backup was the prior system. So only some bookmarks and outgoing mail lost. Obviously I’m not impressed with the stability of Tiger.

From the little inspection that I did (in order to retrieve data not backed up), the user settings were not deleted ... but were sidestepped. In the bookmarks for Firefox, for instance, a blank bookmarks.html file was created, while the saved ones were re-labeled bookmarks-1.html, -2 etc.
Not sure how the software registrations were "lost".
I can see the advantage in a clean install. I did this with Panther upgrading from Jaguar, and moved my registrations, passwords, etc., file-by-file. (Some registrations aren't written down and have to be moved). It's time consuming but possible. Time is money, and Tiger's time-saving enhancements have just been nulled by this sudden maintenance issue. Next year when I have time I might give Tiger another go.

After restart, all user settings are gone and reset to defaults

Hi after waking up my iMac from sleep today, it appeared something had gone wrong (apps not responding…notification that my external drives had "not been ejected correctly" etc). I restarted. After restart, and logging back in to my regular user account, all user settings were missing and reset to factory defaults: Desktop reset to the "wave", Dock reset, Download folder missing (grey question mark), Dropbox unable to connect, Safari bookmarks missing (but still on my iPhone-- so it's a local iMac problem, not an issue with iCloud), small things like mouse scrolling prefs reset etc.
Basically all of my user preferences are missing. I've seen a number of threads about how to fix some of these items individually, but seems like there is a single corrupt preference file somewhere maybe?
I've repaired permissions a few times (there were a lot), and restarted but nothing has fixed it yet.
I had been logged out of iCloud, but once I logged back in, my Mail came back (just my me.com account-- still missing my Gmail, will need to reset I guess), along with Calendar and Contacts-- those are ok.
I keep all my files on an external LaCie RAID, and that all appears to be fine. Folders all intact etc.

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

Using LR 2.2
on MacBook Pro / Leopard 10.5
worked great so far.
just finished a long development session, went through lots of pictures.
After quitting LR I seem to have lost all my user settings, like my development settings, the metadata presets and the export presets.
the catalog seems fine otherwise.
any idea what happened here ?

It would appear that when you "change" this setting, Lr can no longer see the old settings since it's now looking in the wrong place. I would bet that any NEW presets you created AFTER changing to "save with catalog" would be remembered by Lr.
The question is: When changing this setting, is there something that has to be done in order to get the old presets to re-save to the new location? My thinking is that when you change the setting, Lr does not automatically save the presets to the catalog since they're already saved elsewhere -- i.e. it doesn't realize that it has to re-save them again in order to see them the next time Lr is started.
I'd be interested in hearing any further info on this.

In addition to other expert advice about bulk modify I have to add that although my first language is not English, I personally prefer to name my OU's in English language. I experienced some problems with non-English OU's especially when it comes to reporting
with Powershell.

supports Unicode Language (Arabic, Farsi/Persian, etc.), you do not have problem with non-english. Here is example:

All user settings lost but UID/PW logs user in OK!

First time poster, new to Mac’s, not computer illiterate…
Hope that covered it all! Proficient in Windows XP but we made the switch, now having some challenges! My wife and I are both “Administrators” and 2 profiles exist on the computer. My wife logged in yesterday and her ID/Password logged her in. Other than that, for her profile, everything went back to factory defaults. Her Mail settings were gone, her iPhoto library still exists on the disk but the library doesn’t load, when safari loads, it indicates that “favorites cannot be saved”, the menu at the bottom of her screen doesn’t do the stretch scroll as you wave past the bottom of the screen.
It appears as though her UID exists, the data (example the actual digital photo’s) still exist on the disk however they’ve been disassociated with iPhoto. This appears to be the case for all apps.
Any thoughts on how to tackle this? I am posting in the Tiger forum as this problem is all related to one common theme. I suspect that there’s 1 solution that can be applied to resolve all these apps.

Did she rename her home folder (the little house icon)? That can cause this problem. If so, have a look at this page for a fix.

Changed name of "home" folder, then lost all user settings

recently bought my computer second hand from a friend. i right clicked on the home folder and changed it's name to mine, restarted, and now i no longer have access to my iphoto directory and my itunes library. i've tried changing the home folder back to what i believe it was before and restarting the computer...but i've had no luck getting my settings back. unfortunately, i think i may have forgotten the original home folder name. can someone help me recover it?

1. All application settings (e.g. debug level, path to resources - icons, images, path to localization resources) I store in properties files.In other words all information that user CAN NOT change I store use a properties files.
2. All user settings (e.g. language, skin and so on) I store with Preferences API. In other words all information that user CAN change I store a use Preferences API.
Is this a good rules?

Using ARD to change user settings

I was wondering if it was possible to use ARD to change the desktop background for all users? This kinda turns into two questions for me since I know nothing about Macs. First, is there an "all users" settings type thing at all, if so where? Second, is there some sort of config file that would store the location of the desktop background so I could eventually copy a new background to a location and change that file to point to the new file, thus upgrading the desktop background?

Unable to load embedded PDF - must change settings for all users

Hello. We recently updated to Adobe Reader X on our three terminal servers. Since the update we have found that a lot of our users are having an issue loading PDF's that are embedded in web sites.
They access different websites that have such features and the PDF must be displayed in the browswer for it to load correctly. Anyways, I have properly found what settings to adjust in Adobe Reader, my issue is that I need these settings adjusted for all 50 something employees and I really don't want to log into each user account and change the settings.
The settings that must be adjusted are as follows:
Edit > Preferences > General > Uncheck Enable Protected Mode at Startup
Edit > Preferences > Internet > Uncheck Display in Read Mode by Default
Edit > Preferences > Internet > Uncheck Allow fast web view
Edit > Preferences > Internet > Uncheck Allow speculative downloading in the background
I have found the registry files for the Protected Mode startup and Display in Read Mode, but am unable to find the other two registry settings. Does anyone have any idea where those might be? Or if you have a better suggestion on how to deploy Adobe with these settings already configured? I have looked in the Customization Tool but was unable to find all the settings there as well. Deploy Color Settings to All Users

I've seen this hinted at elsewhere, but no clear answer. We want all of our users to utilize North America Prepress 2 color settings. As is, I have to remember to adjust this setting in Bridge after each user logs into their workstation for the first time. Is there a file containing this setting that I can copy to all users profiles, or another way to deploy this setting to all users on a workstation? Ideally, I would ultimately silently deploy this change to all workstations in the domain. Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, it's impossible for all users.
In Windows 7, you can unlock removable data drives by using a password or a smart card. After you've started encryption, the drive can also be automatically unlocked on a specific computer for a specific user account.
However, the prerequisite is that user must have recovery key.

Kill all sessions of a special user

Hi all,
I'm not very familar with PL/SQL but I think this will help my on my "issue".
Sometimes I need to kill all current sessions (most times 36 sessions) of a single database user.
All sessions have a different sid and serial# and manually executing "alter system kill session 'xxx,yyyy' isn't really funny.
Im thinking of a small PL/SQL script which receives the dbuser name as parameter and then killing all sessions of the user.
Could please anyone give ma a hint or a short example on this??

I have had a new hard drive installed. On start up I transferred all my settings and documents from my time capsule. Once complete I have two user accounts. Mine and guest. I cannot access either. Mine says password incorrect even though its not.

Saving AVL view settings for all users

Hi,
I am working on web dynpro abap application which shows alv results of more reports (you will select report and it will show the alv table result).
I have to use some standard reports for this, so I copied it to Z report and modify it so this is possible. Problem I have is that is standard report the output have maybe 10 columns, but the table I got from the report has maybe 26. I want to limit shown columns on the ALV with settings of view for alv, but the assignment is only possible for the user.
Is there any way how to create one view settings and make it initial for all users?
I know there is a way of modifying the standard view via abap code, but I want to keep the possibility to show all fields if required.

another problem, I was expecting the newly created variant / layout / settings for view would be tied to the displayed table (which sounds kind of wired as I wrote it down).
But since I am displaying different tables in the same UI element and binding the tables and their structures dynamically the created variant applies to all of the tables (or thats how it seems) so the table which have all fields different then the layout shows nothing.
Do you have any ideas how to get around it?
My idea would be to store the layout (but i have no idea how it looks at db level) and identification of the report to some customer table and fill attribute of alv table dynamically according to used report. But thats just my idea, I have no idea if it si possible to do it like this.
Is there some other way how to accomplish this functionality?
I have also tried to do it on fieldcatalog level of the alv table, but it seems to show first, let's say, 8 fields if there is 8 fields in the fieldcatalog.
Any help or ideas please??

How can I configure FireFox security setting globally for all users on a PC? Is there something I can do in group policies or throught the registry to insure all users have the same settings?

Our Bank's core processor has rewritten their product to run in a web browser. Their browser of choice is Firefox 3.6. The specifications from our core processor specify specific security and settings parameters that must be adhered to by all users for their product to run properly. Is there a way to globally configure these settings via the registry or group policies to insure everyone who logs in to a given workstation opens Firefox with the same settings? Hi Arti!
You can default user settings in a PFCG role, in the "personalization" tab.
If you have a PFCG role that is common to all your users, you can set the default values here.
However it does not prevent them to change these settings later, except if you modify the "user settings" fields properties in cProjects application.
