Tiger NetBoot Questions

I read through the docs and setup netboot on our new XServe (running 10.4.3) last night. It appears to be basically working, but...
1) I notice that the Server Admin tool -- after an hour or two -- lists the NetBoot Service as "Not Available". Once this happens I can't start, stop, or modify settings. So far the only way to get it back to normal is to reboot the XServe. Even though the service is listed as NA, it seems to be in fact running as I can Net Boot clients. What's the deal with this? I was having a similar problem with the Software Update service until the 10.4.3 Server Update. Is Server Admin just funky/buggy?
2) I notice that the shares for the netboot image and client shadow data are served via AFP with global read/write access. I thought NetBoot was NFS based, what's the need for the AFP share points, and why are they world writeable?
thanks for any insight!

point 1) i had the same problem and i beleave its related to your DNS settings, if theres a problem with dns settings then the netboot goes offlline in server admin, its runs but u cant do anything in server admin, a fix oif ur dns should resolve this, this may also cause ur software update server to fail,
2 ) netboot for os x images is over NFS, but netboot for 9 is done over afp, thats y afp is set by default for netboot shares, if you do not require os 9 netboot then simply turn of afp for the shares. the settings are global because netboot requires global settings, as any machine can boot up off netboot server.

  • Want to erase hard drive and reinstall Tiger- quick questions

I am giving my G4 to my son in a couple of days and it now has Classic on it. My plan is to erase the whole hard drive and install just Tiger. So my thoughts are:
1.) There are no settings I want/need to preserve. I have 4 Tiger CD's- is that the right number? I think I have them all but just want to make sure.
2.) Do I insert CD holding down the C key and from some point when the CD loads, I chose Disk Utility and wipe the hard drive then? Are there different choices for wiping the hard drive? Like the number of passes?
3.) And then is it just a simple matter of installing all 4 Tiger disks?
Any other tips, tricks, advice you can give me? Tomorrow's the big day (2/1)! Thanks so much, I am a bit nervous about this......... Judy

Here are some directions you may find helpful:
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note 1: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
    Installation Process
    Open Installer and begin installation.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Optional: Check box to install X11 (Tiger) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
    Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
    After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    Connect to Internet.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo update (PPC)
Computer will restart after installing update.
    Repair Disk Permissions as previously.
Go to Apple Menu > Software Update.
    Install all updates.
    Computer may restart after updates.
Repair Disk Permissions, again, as previously.
Please do post back with further questions, comments or an update.

  • Reinstalling Tiger: Some Questions

My Appologies if this has been covered before. Something is broken on my system. I'm not sure exactly what it is but there are certain software applications that cause kernal panics on my system while working fine on other systems running 10.4.11. I've done a lot of work trying to deal with the problem and managed to eliminate most of the possible causes. So the next stop in my attempt to solve this problem will be to reinstall Tiger. I've never done this before. Since I'm into audio production I have a lot of material on my hard drive that I would prefer not to reinstall. (Logic Pro Studio, for instance take about 4 hours to install.) In some cases I no longer have the installers for programs i purchased of the web. (At the time I didn't know what those little brown boxes where so I deleted them.) So the first question is can I reinstall OS 10.4.11 without reinstalling everything else? I have the original install disks for my computer (a 22 month old intel iMac 1.83 with 2 gig of ram). I can't remember if these will install all the way up to 10.4.11. I've done a system backup using the Lacie backup software and a lot of my important stuff is actually on 2 external hard drives. What else do I need to do before starting this and what's the procedure? Thanks

    Hi-
To reinstall the OS without reinstalling all your software, you would use the Archive and Install option. It may also be good to "preserve user settings".
Depending on your install disc version, may then need to update to 10.4.11. Download the Combo updater and that will get you up to snuff in one shot.
Before you do the reinstall, double check that all your backup needs are current.
One note, though the Archive and Install does replace the OS files, there is a chance that this will dilute the troubleshooting, as the presence of all third party items can't be discounted as suspect.
Still, a troubleshooting step none the less, just thought I'd mention that...

  • Tiger Maintenance Question

I work a small school, and have a question about Tiger maintenance (I use the general term 'Mac' because I am referring to everything from iMac G3's, G5's, Intel iMacs, iBooks andMacBooks). As far as I can tell, what currently passes for maintenance here is copying a disk image of the user's computer from a disk image, and reinstalling it.
My problem is that on my two iMacs at home (a G3/500 and an G5/1.6GHz) I run daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance via the command line, and fsck (I perfer to fsck, as opposed to using Disk Utility because I am learning something) whenever things aren't working as I feel they should; though I can understand why some people find the command line somewhat scary.
I have really grown to dig (I would say 'love' but that's way too creepy) the Mac platform, and it really bugs me when I think that it is being 'mistreated'.
In any case, as far as I can tell there is no maintenance done on our Macs at all (this includes permission repair, which I also do on my own machines regularly), other than what I already mentioned.
I guess what I am asking is that, if I am right, how can I convince our tech person that the command line (or even Disk Utility) doesn't cause a Mac to self-destruct, and how, even if you wipe a drive and restore from a disk image, that you're saving all the problems that were present before you created the disk image, and while the reinstall will help with issues of fragmentation (assuming that they are present) it will do little for any gremlins that have crept into the system.

My immediate answer is: by telling him loudly and clearly that, at least in this, you are correct and know what you are saying and doing!
I wonder if AppleJack, by being the command line written to by a tried and proved and highly respected utility, might help to convince him.

  • Panther to tiger upgrade questions.

I am getting an upgrade from work so I can have Tiger.
Should I backup before upgrading? How?
And if it does not work out, how can I revert back to 10.3?
    Thanks~!

Should I backup before upgrading? How?
You should backup before installing anything new. You should backup before examining your machine for hardware or software trouble. You should backup after writing data that is important to you. Here's my backup FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
If you follow my cloning instructions there, you can just clone back your backup if the 10.4 upgrade doesn't work.
To upgrade to 10.4 you'll need to at least double your RAM to have effective speed. You'll also want at least 10 GB of free hard disk space. My upgrade FAQ* explains other things you need to watch out for:

P.S. Please note this is the PowerMac G4, for tower G4 computers, and not Powerbook G4 computer like in your profile. If indeed you have a Powerbook G4, and not a PowerMac G4, and I can't answer your question, please post further questions about it in the Powerbook forum that is relevant after identifying your computer using my FAQ*:

  • Final Cut Pro Compatability with OS 10.4 Tiger - Easy Question

Right now I am cutting a feature film on Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD, OS Panther (10.3.9). As soon as I'm done with this project, I'd like to upgrade to OS 10.4 because I will be cutting a new feature in HDV (24p footage using HDVxDV to digitize and convert to DVCPRO HD).
My question is this...does Final Cuto Pro 4.5 work in OS 10.4? Or do I HAVE TO get the Final Cut Pro 5 upgrade in order for FCP to work in Tiger?
    Thanks for the help.
    PowerMac G5, 2gHz, 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   500 GB G-RAID x4, Canopus ADVC-110, Sony DSR-45
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I switched because I wanted to use the MultiCam, plus for the integration with Shake (which I use extensively) and in the bigger picture, I wanted Motion 2 over Motion 1, so it made sense to upgrade to Final Cut Studio.
But if you're looking for any BIG changes in the user interface or effects, etc, don't mess with your smooth functioning system. FCP 5 introduced a new RT system that causes interruptions in playback during shuttling when the mouse is moved and from general anecdotes is just not as smooth as in prior revs.
For me, I'm happy I upgraded, but if it doesn't bring you any features you're looking for, you should probably stay with the system you're happy with.

  • Tiger installation question

Just a general question. I'm giving in and upgrading to Tiger from Panther. I've decided just to do the upgrade install as per Apple's recommendation. After I fully back up to my external HD and repair permissions, is there anything else anyone recommends I do before installing? Assuming the install is seamless, can I expect everything to be where it was before? Will my Epson printer function per usual? Will my USB cordless mouse function as before? Thanks in advance for any input.

Thanks, Soapsuiter. Good suggestions, the answer of which I don't know at present. My printer is the 6600 all-in-one. It's only 10 months old so I'm confident the driver won't be a problem. The only 3rd party software I have at present is Word for Mac 2004, which I don't antiticipate being a problem, either. I'll cross my fingers and will give it a go.

  • Installing Tiger - a question for you...

When i install Tiger, using the 'Archive and Install' option - will my Photoshop CS, Illustrator CS, Itunes Music, VLC etc still be there when the machine boots up with the new OS?
I have backed up all my personal files, but just want to make sure I can rest easy knowing these files will still be there, happy waiting for me on reboot.
    Please advise,
    Thanks
    Martin.

    hi martin--
you will have to expect to lose the actual applications, and to have to reinstall them when you do an archive and install. however, the documents that you created with the applications will be preserved. here is an article which gives you detailed info about doing an archive and install. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120 it is important to do software update afterwards, otherwise certain things may not work properly. good luck. • MAC OSX Tiger iLife Question

I just installed Tiger and so far everything is going great. I just wanted to know if the following applications were/are available to me after I installed Tiger.
    iLife, iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie, GarageBand.
It shows these applications in the manual towards the end of the booklet, but I cannot seem to find them in the applications on my MAC..
I was wondering if anyone could help me because I had iDVD, iphoto when I first got my mac..
    Thanks,

Hey Klaus Thanks for your reply. Oh so my original OSX disks that came with my mac would have the older versions of the iLife, iphoto, idvd, imovie. Now if I were to re-install these applications, would I be able to update them using the updates feature in mac? And if I dont have the original operating system disk, could I just download them from the apple website?
    Thanks again,

  • Tiger Reinstall Questions

things have been crashy lately - most Apps have won't stay open for more than 10 minutes. I gather from the forums that reinstall is a good solution. My admittedly nooby questions are:
    1) Can I Archive&Install to outboard diskdrive and safely bring the stuff back to fresh OS? MacHD is 1G short of full and I cannot free up the recommended 10Gs.
    2) If there a way to reinstall without completely clearing hard drive data? i.e. do I have to back up everything on my computer?
    Many thanks in advance!

Can I safely run iTunes library from a Firewire (400 I believe) outboard disk? The library is a memory hog and takes up 45 gigs on my 75 Gig drive
Yes, I do, works fine... faster than the older internal drives too.
Can I upgrade my internal hard drive to a larger one? I have mirrored doors G4. And if so what's your recommendation?
Oh my, yes... I see your in Japan, but to give you an idea, assuming it;s the non-FW/800 model MDD...

  • Upgrading to Tiger, Important Question

So my wife recently purchased a MacBookPro with Tiger on it, and I have been using my G4 with Panther. Am I able to upgrade my G4 with her Tiger discs? Firstly, can this be done, just as a simple upgrade? Secondly, do I have to spend more money just to upgrade my laptop by buying the upgrade online? I should be able to upgrade with her discs from the large purchase I just made anyways, but knowing apple..... After playing around with her mbp, i realize that i want panther now. Any assistance would be much obliged. Thanks.

The OSX disks shipped with a new computer are designed not to work on other models. Even if they did, you couldn't use a MacBook disk on a G4 because the MacBook is Intel and the G4 is PPC. Even if you could, you would be violating the license.
Why not wait a few months until Leopard comes out, then buy a Family pack to update both computers? It will cost less tan two upgrades if they follow past policy.

  • Netboot (or should I say Neverboot)

OK. Got a copy of Leopard server. Followed Apple's cookbook instructions. First Jabber will not work with Active Directory (but that is not why I am writing). Then I set up NetBoot, created a Netboot image using a Leopard disk and the 10.5 server tools. I then (on a 10/100 network) booted a Macbook to it but it just sits at the grey apple screen with the spinning gear. I mounted my Netboot image and placed Bombich's Netrestore tool in the Apps folder and created Prefs to point to another image that I want to place on my client machine. What am I doing wrong?!? It is NFS and my server and client machine are all Intels. Thoughts appreciated.

Funny I thought the same thing so I put everything on the same switch/subnet. They both connect at 1000mbps on the same switch.
I did use Bombich's tools to create a Tiger Netboot image that was very small and it does boot faster but once booted Netrestore does not see the local hard drive. I obviously need to do more investigation on this.

  • Have G5 users noticed a drastic improvement now that OSX w/Tiger is 64 Bit?

I'm about to buy a new G5 something (not sure which model yet), but wanted to know if there has been a dramatic improvement with performance now that there is an 64 Bit OS that can take advantage of a 64 Bit system? All feedback is welcomed. If you're someone that owned a G5 with the 32 Bit versions of OSX and recently upgraded to Tiger, this question is geared towards you.

"I'm about to buy a new G5 something (not sure which model yet)..."
buy the Quad, all computers will be dual cores shortly. single core's are on their way out.
"...but wanted to know if there has been a dramatic improvement with performance now that there is an 64 Bit OS that can take advantage of a 64 Bit system?..."
Uh, it's almost 64 bit, I think the graphics are still 32 bit because it's faster right now than 64 bit graphics.
"...All feedback is welcomed. If you're someone that owned a G5 with the 32 Bit versions of OSX and recently upgraded to Tiger, this question is geared towards you."
Ok, I saw this chart that tested 32 bit Panther and 64 bit Tiger on various machines using X-Bench.
The chart is gone off the net, but I'll recall from memory and be brief.
    (1) 10.3.9 and 10.4 was compared
    (2) G4 processor machines saw a User Interface speed improvement with 10.4, limited CPU performance increase.
    (3) G5 processor machines saw a great CPU and a User Interface speed improvement with 10.4
    (4) The best improvement of both CPU and UI was in the PowerMac G5 line-up at the time, which comprised of Single 1.8, Dual 1.8 and Dual 2 Ghz separate processors. iMac G5 wasn't available yet.
    (5) G4's can realize a faster UI "feel" with 10.4 and some versions afterwards, and depending on the processor speed, some things like Spotlight and Dashboard can be disabled for even better overall performance on G4's.
From personal experience 10.4 was indeed faster "feeling" than 10.3.9, which I feel Apple might have hobbled a bit.
Some later versions of 10.4, like 10.4.2 Apple increased Safari rendering speed, which is a nice improvement.
I also think 10.4 and beyond is offloading to the Graphical Processing Unit to get even more performance, so having the ability to update the video card is a bonus.
Clone your boot drive, read my post here

  • Processor & memory before OS 10 Tiger

    Hi,
    I'm new to the list!
Been reading some posts--thanks to all for the great info!
    I'm planning to upgrade my G4 Sawtooth, 450Hz, OS 9.2.2 by adding 4-512MB PC100 SDRAM, and 1.5Ghz processor upgrade[probably Fastmac??]and OS 10 Tiger
First question is-- do I upgrade the hardware, then install OS 10 Tiger or vice versa???
Second question is--will an external 160G Maxxtor drive work via the 400Mbps firewire w/ OS Tiger. I've read that I wll need to get a Ultra/ATA 133 PCI card [like the Sonnet Tempo ATA133] to get the full 160G capacity. I understand that without the card I can still use about 137G???
    G4, AGP Sawtooth, 450Hz   Mac OS 9.2.x
    G4,AGP Sawtooth, 450Hz   Mac OS 9.2.x

Have you added the individual costs for the upgrades that you're contemplating? Including the memory, processor, hard drive, ATA controller card or external 1394 case, and OS X software, you're likely to spend $600+. You didn't mention the optical drive in your Sawtooth. Do you have a DVD-ROM drive for the Tiger DVDs? If not, you can send them in for an exchange with CD media. Do you still have the stock video card? You may want a faster card with DDR memory to replace the original. When you're done remaking your Sawtooth, you'll have a considerable amount of $$ invested in it. If you decide to sell it in a year, you'll never be able to recover the costs of these upgrades. You may want to check prices for a slightly newer, faster Mac. Ignoring that upgrade reality check, I've got a B&W G3 that I've put more $$ into than its current market value or common sense would justify, so I know how you feel.
Check newegg for the best price on the Acard AEC-6280M Mac-compatible ATA controller card, and then check this memory dealer for competitive pricing on the PC-100 SDRAM. Without the controller card, your G4 will only recognize 128 GBs of formatted drive. In spite of the unrecognized capacity, many have reported doing so without issues.

  • Kisight:- If I Don't Have or Want to Use My iSight What Can I Use ?

kisight:- If I Don't Have or Want to Use My iSight What Can I Use ?
Or What Cameras are available for Macs ?
This question used to come up for Macs that did not have Internal Cameras and the User did not have an External iSight.
Since the advent of Intel Mac and the Internal iSight and OS 10.4.9 (late Tiger) the question has broadened from "What can I use with iChat ?" to "What cameras can I use with My Mac ?" and from there into the current Question this User Tip plans to answer.
On the whole it is a case of matching a camera for the type of application you are going to use it most with.
A web cam can be used in iMovie to create Email or Video Blogs although Camcorders do a better job. Camcorders can be used as web cams.
    Camera Types
These fall into three main categories that themselves have subsets.
Your choice is going to be influenced by the Applications you want to use it with.
    1) Firewire Cameras (Plug an Play)
    a) The iSight (External) made by Apple and several other similar cameras have mostly disappeared off the market. (Although iSights seem to be still doing well on Ebay - See Version and Mounts).
    b) Firewire Camcorders. These vary as to which apps that work with dues to the different Signal outputs they can do.
Apple Article TA26556 Highlights some that have issues due to their proprietary DV Format.
    2) USB 1.1 able Cameras. (Not Plug and Play)
This includes most cameras pre Vista (more on that later)
Most of these will need a suitable Mac Driver either from the Manufacturer or from one of two Generic sources (macam and IOXeperts). Some manufacturers will include a Mac Driver on the CD that comes with the camera some will supply it as a download from their Site.
It is worth while saying at this point that iChat will also need this reasonably cheap iUSBCam Utility as well.
This Utility was originally designed for getting the External iSight to work on computers less than the G3/600Mghz spec for iChat. Then it included the ability to get USB cameras to work with iChat.
You will need one of these three options listed so far if you are OS 10.4.8 or below or have only USB 1.1 ports/sockets on your Mac.
    3) USB 2.0 Cameras. (Plug and Play in most cases)
    a) Those that are UVC (USB Video Class) Compliant (Also listed as Vista Certified)
Apple added a UVC driver to the OS at 10.4.9 but your Mac also has to have an USB 2.0 port that you can plug such a camera into (Some keyboard ports are not USB 2.0). This means that the camera is Plug and Play although it may not have all the features it has on a PC
    b) Those that are USB 2.0 but are not Vista Certified/UVC compliant. (You are going to need Mac Drivers again)
This site about Apple Compatible cameras may be of some help.
A Note on quality of Pictures.
Firewire cameras of either sort are best with Camcorders being the best of all. (Generally more pixels delivered faster to your Computer)
The Newer USB 2.0 cameras are tending to exceed the 640 X 480 pixels that earlier USB1.1 cameras use with some currently giving 1.3Mp resolutions. It should be noted though that not all applications will use this format.
Look closely at the maximum Frame rate (fps) a camera can produce. You may not get it is every applications but something that starts with a max of 15fps is going to give you no leeway.

Versions and Mounts Which Version Am I Buying ?
First off I will not say so much on Buying a second hand External iSight other than making sure you use a reputable Selling site or an Individual Seller so that you have recourse if the device turns out to be faulty. Try and get to see the camera working if you can, preferably seeing it plugged in and working or by iChat and seeing the Pic it produces (Get the person to show you live Screen shots (or Screen Share in Leopard/iChat 4) of System Preferences > Sound > Input as the iSight will be listed)
What I will list here is info about the different versions.
There were three versions before the External iSight was discontinued. There is little outward differences as the main change is the mounts that are included with each version. They all function the same way.
The versions are distinguished by letters (Revision A, B or C) in addition to the base part number and an added slash (M8817LL/).The Last model included different mounts for Laptops, Desktop Stand, Magnetic mount and one for a Flat Panel iMac (the Lampshade one). See pictures in this PDF on page 6.
Apple no Longer sell the External iSight or the Apple M9314G/B iSight Accessory Kit either but you may find it at other places as well if the mount you want/need does not come with the camera. Pics of Box and Contents
It appears that individual iSight mounts and other items can be purchased though this iSight Service FAQ page
Remember the youngest External iSight is likely to be at least 4 years old. Current anecdotal information suggests the cost of an Apple Repair to a faulty External iSight exceeds the cost of a USB Replacement (Or the value in real terms, of the camera itself - although higher prices seem to be quoted on Ebay and Amazon)
