Tiger on a G4 400mhz

Guys:
i had it with Panther... none of my favorites apps works anymore (adium, medialink and others).
I have a G4 400mhz AGP with an 80gb HD and 512 ram.... do you think Tiger will run OK on this machine?. Of course i'll have to disable a lot of stuff like mac os x effects so Tiger can run a little better.
Thanks in advanced
Cheers!

i mean, spotlight helps the system to find and link all files faster?
It only speeds things up if you're searching for content within certain files really... which I never do hardly, I'm just looking for Filenames most of the time.
How did you disable Bonjour?
Disable Bonjour completely...

Is there anything i can do to make it run faster?, besides of course buying more ram
Bigger/faster Hard Drive, but RAM isn't all that expensive anymore either!

  • Mac OSX Tiger on a Pismo 400mhz

    Hi there,
I am wondering if OSX Tiger can be installed on a Pismo.
Today I wanted to do a test with it, using the installation disks of a friend of mine who has got Tiger too.
It didn't work, the system said that it was not possible to install the software. On the actual CD it was written "For Powerbook 4" or something like that.
I wonder if that CD could only work on a Powerbook 4 or something.
Bear in mind that my Pismo is 400mhz fast and it has 256mb of memory. Looking at the Apple website, my configuration seams to be compatible with Tiger, but I am not too sure since I am a completely newby and I may have missed the meaning of something..
Can anybody there help me? I'd love to understand what is the newest OS that I could possibly install on this Pismo.
    Many thanks.

    Gerrit,
Jaguar/10.2 will run fine with 192MB and 10GB HD. Apple recommends 128MB minimum for Jaguar and since your parents will be using the 'book probably for emailing and browsing, it should be fine. If you wish, adding a 512MB memory module in the top slot to replace the 128MB is easy and inexpensive.

If you have not done so, update to the latest firmware while booted to 9.x.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75132
After updating, check to make sure you still have 192MB of memory.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60839
If one of your memory modules has been disabled, it can be re-enabled.

Reduce the size of your 10.2 install by NOT installing all the printer drivers and foreign language translators. These are generally unnecessary and you can install them later if you wish. Then just download and install the printer driver for the printer they will be using. As you start the installer, look for a button near the bottom of each window that says 'Custom' or 'Options' (can't recall), then uncheck the two items I mentioned.
Now download the MacOS X 10.2.8 Combo Update and install.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdatecombo10_28.html
After installing 10.2.8, run Repair Disk Permissions from Disk Utility while booted to the HD.
Next, run the Software Update and see what updates your 10.2.8 needs. I choose to download the items separately to my desktop, then install each separately and restarting when required.
You can choose to leave 9.x on the HD or start fresh and erase; I always check the option to Install the MacOS9 HD Driver in Disk Utility on a dual-boot computer. It cannot be installed after erasing with Disk Utility and installing OSX.

  • Problems booti and install Tiger on a G4 running 9.2.2 from an external DVD

G4 PCI powermac, just a cd drive built in, running 9.2, sees external iomega dvd drive, reads dvds, cds, but when I try loading tiger from a dvd there are problems.
I puu the tiger disc in, click on install, then get a message that startup disc cannot set this drive as the startup disc (or similar). Restarting and holding the c key doesn't work- I get blinking question mark and have to disconnect the iomega drive, put the 9.2 cd in the internal drive and restart again holding down c key to get anything. Then, running from the cd I can reset the startup disc to the hard drive. Neither can I install tiger running 9.2 from the internal cd, with the tiger DVD in the Iomega drive- it sees it, but requires that the tiger install disc be the startup drive, and we go around again if I try that.
Q- is this possible, ie to load tiger on a PCI 400mhz powermac from an external DVD drive? has anyone done it? how?
    Thank you.
by the way, PCI 400mhz powermac- doesn't need firmware updating, can't be put into target mode, can't boot from a firewire device (and I have tried, just in case)

Joe, thank you very much for your post. The PCI G4 won't boot from an external USB dvd drive. Part of the apple support site says it will, another part says it won't. It won't. And it's well documented that the PCI G4 won't boot from a firewire device, neither can one put it into target mode.
The method Joe suggests does work. I arrived at it independantly, with this method- I ran 9.2 from a CD and partitioned the internal hard drive 10GB dive, ended up with two 5GB partitions. then installed 9.2 on one partition.
    Restarted and I'm running 9.2.
Then copied the Tiger install dvd from an external dvd rom, just a normal drag n drop copy, while running 9.2 (you can't do this under OS X) Then set the startup disc as the partition with the OS X install files on it.
(I copied the Tiger files ontot he partition that wasn't running 9.2)
Pressed restart, a long wait and then it sprang into life and installed OSX on the other partition, but without asking if I wanted a clean install- it just installed it alongside the 9.2 system folder.
I had to specify no extras, it prompted for that, via a message that said free space was tight.
All went well and it's running 10.4.4
Problems that have arisen- 1. won't update the system. Downloads the files via software update, then says it can't use them. The update dmg files from the apple site won't work either.
    2. won't shut down properly- goes to a blue screen, then stays there- I have to unplug it every time.
    Otherwise ok.
prior to working this out out, I visited the local apple store- no cd copies of tiger, exchange program withdrawn. Suggested I call apple. Did so, was directed to technical support. Technical support, very nice guy but knew zero about this.
this is really a bit of fun for me, I have other macs, so no worries, but if anyone has a copy of Tiger on CD, I'd really like to borrow it.
    Thanks everyone
    Mike

  • Pismo keyboard problem

Bringing, I hope, a 400 MHz PowerPC G3 Pismo w/320 Ram back to life. Some time in 2004 it was loaned to a relative who was typing a dissertation. At the end of the year he brought it back and it was stored. He claims no accident, no spillages on keyboard, etc.
Got it up and ready despite dead batteries after I removed the PRAM battery and pushed the reset on the back of the case to the left and below the dial-up socket. Ordered a few things and awaiting their arrival and will be ordering a new HD once I figure if I can get Pismo back.
One problem: One tier of keys do not work. Keys are the "9" "o" "l" and "." both upper and lower case.
I tried connecting a nearly new full-sized Apple keyboard via the USB and found the same result, the keys listed above will not register an image when pressed.
I also tried looking at the pins connecting the keyboard ribbon connection to the rest of the computer. Nothing appeared bent and neither end of the connection appears dirty. I pushed it back down firmly and it seemed to seat. No improvement. Other keys still work.
There doesn't appear to be evidence of a spill on or near the keys in question, nor anywhere else for that matter.
I've read the discussion started Jan 21, 2009, by shermo, entitled "KeysUnresponsive."
    Suggestions?

With no internal keyboard and an external USB keyboard the keys register properly. Had you asked me to disconnect the old defective keyboard I would have disconnected the ribbon between old defective keyboard and the rest of the computer; and I would have removed it.
David, if you have nothing else better to do, do a quick test.
    1. Install the defective kbd & connect the external kbd. Does the external kbd still not work properly?
This is how I tested it initially. Keyboard still connected by ribbon and in place. The external keyboard did not work properly. Can't do that anymore, because old defective keyboard went to recycler yesterday. (Trash pickup here is Monday.)
    2. If the external kbd doesn't work properly, disconnect the defective kbd. Now does the external kbd work properly?
At your request, see above. I disconnected and removed the good, internal keyboard. The external USB did work properly. As perhaps a point of interest, the Dock has gone back to the default (at the bottom) position and the size of icons in it are not reduced, when the internal keyboard is removed.
I have Tiger running on my 400MHz Pismo with 768MB RAM.
Duly noted. I think I'd need a bit more RAM, to avoid its running slower than it does now.

  • Installing Panther on B/W PM G3

I've trolled the forums and googled around for other forums, but all I find is topics relating to the Beige powermac G3's so I figured I'd post in search of answers.
Basically I have a Blue/White PowerMac G3 400Mhz that I picked up for a low income family I know. It has OSX 10.0.3 on it and I thought I could install 10.3.7 on it using my G4 Powerbook disc, but it's not reading it. I took out my sisters Dell Dimension DVD RW drive and swapped it temporarily with the CD drive the Powermac has so that it will read the disks. That enabled the disc to show up and be opened.
I am able to select install 10.3.7 which brings me to the restart button. Once I hit that, it just reboots and doesn't attempt to make any sort of install. I've done reinstalls on my powerbook and so I thought it would go right into the install when it rebooted.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Do I have to buy a copy of Panther or whatever this computer can support that is made for powermacs?
I did try hitting the C button during log in and I didn't get anything either.
Anyone know if I could use tiger? I'd rather just use an old disk if I can because they don't have a llot of cash. I just want to be able to set them up with iwork and office and itunes and other programs that they would use. Nothing too fancy...

    Hi, Thomas -
Do I have to buy a copy of Panther or whatever this computer can support that is made for powermacs?
    Yes.
The disks that come with a machine are model-specific; that is, they are intended to be used on that model only, and rarely will have the necessary hardware-specific files needed by a different model Mac.
You will need to purchase a copy of the retail package for the version of OSX that you wish to use on that machine.
A B&W G3 is suppported for all versions of OSX released to date, including OSX 10.4 (Tiger). Although your 400MHz model is the fastest of the B&W G3 models, you may find that OSX 10.3 (Panther) is the better choice.

  • Want to upgrade to OS X 10.3.9, do I have enough RAM?

Hello ~ I plan to purchase software to upgrade my OS X from 10.2 to 10.3 (and then update to 10.3.9). Do I have enough RAM with 128 mb to run this effectively? This is an iBook that I bought used, to get by temporarily. Is it worth it to add the extra RAM? If so, would it be an easy do it yourself install?

  • Can't install 10.4 Tiger on 400Mhz or 500Mhz TiBook

Okay, my frustration level has risen sufficiently to post an S.O.S. on the forum. My wife and I both have TiBooks, 400Mhz and 500Mhz models. Both have 512Mb of Ram. Both have 20GB hard drives with 10Gb available.
They have served us flawlessly all these years. We are planning on upgrading to a new MacBook and a MacBook Pro next June, but in the meantime I purchased a full retail copy of OSX 10.4 Tiger to install on my 500. The install DVD always hangs at the same spot when checking destination disk.
After several unsuccessful attempts, I gave up and tried to install it on my wife's 400. Same results. I took the software back to where I purchased it from saying that it was faulty software.
Tried again with the new software, same results for both computers. I took the software to my friend's house to check if the DVD was faulty once again, but to my surprise it installed with no problems whatsoever on his G4 iBook. Is there something I'm missing or are the 400 and 500 TiBooks not able to support Tiger?
I even tried to run Disk Utility from the install DVD, but once again it hangs part way through. I don't want to look like a fool and return the software for the second time so....
Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi guys,
Sorry to have taken so long to post an update. I was finally successful in installing OSX Tiger on both TiBooks. After a few agonizing hours at the Mac store in our area, the tech guy was not successful either. So, as a last ditch effort, here's what we did.
After backing up all the data on my 500Mhz TiBook, we stuck in an OS9.2.2 disk, used the drive setup in the utilities and zeroed out the HD.
We then installed 9.2.2 and did all of the required updates.
Next, we installed OSX 10.3.9 and did all of the necessary upgrades as well. This brought the hard drive back up to what it was before. The only difference is that it now had 9.2.2 on it as well.
The tech guy then installed OSX 10.4.0 using an upgrade disk instead of the retail version. Voila! Success! We then brought it up to date with the combined update download.
I have no idea as to what the problem was, or whether having 9.2.2 on the computer made a difference. I had 9.2.2 on it before, but deleted it because I wasn't using it. Perhaps I deleted something that was necessary for 10.4 Tiger to install. I don't really know. Maybe I needed the upgrade disk instead of the full retail disk, although that seems unlikely.
Whatever the case, two days later I took my wife's 400Mhz TiBook down and we did the same thing with the same successful result. I wasn't surprised seeing that both computers were set up the same way.
Thanks guys for all your help and suggestions. This forum is great! I just wish I knew what the cause was, but I am happy that both 'books are up to date.

  • G4 400MHZ and Tiger keeps needing PRAM zap

I hope someone out there can help me, please. I have inherited a Graphite G4 400MHz Powermac.
160GB harddrive (but it only sees 128GB as I'm sure many of you will know!)
    968MB SDRAM
    Firmware 4.2.8
I put in the new hard drive and after many failed attempts (software has failed to install, please retry...) I have got it to run Tiger.
The thing is that it keeps stalling on startup and the only workaround is COPR and to zap the PRAM...I'm guessing this probably isn't a good solution longterm and that there is something more fudamental that neeeds to be done.
Any assistance greatly appreciated as it's far too soon to confine it to the scrapheap!

Your internal memory battery is probably weak & not retaining the PRAM settings. Check this site for battery part numbers and sources. Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial

  • 400mhz Imac and Tiger Video Jitter

I have 10 ruby 400nhz Imacs that are having Tiger installed on. The screen seems to jitter on all of them after the install. Is there an update or setting that will fix this problem?

    Tim Powell1...
One thing to remember is that Tiger really needs a computer with 32MB of video memory to do the video display any justice. Not that this is a requirement to run Tiger, it is highly recommended to possibly avoid issues like yours. You may try in reducing your color rate from millions to thousands and see if that will help or just read on for other ideas...
Now beyond that issue there can be some issues with interference caused by fluorescent lighting, DC brick items, motors, or incoming "dirty" power that may exaggerate your problem.
My old cell phone charger and my little desk fan made my eMac display act a bit funky till I located them further away from the computer. The fan actually needed to be on a different circuit because it was motorized.
I also recall another local user complaining his was doing about the same, and come to find out his 50 watt halogen lamp was the problem. We got his issue under control by removing that item completely for an item with a common light bulb in it. Thing here is that "speciality lighting" (reqiring special bulbs) may contain a baliast or a transformer that can affect your display.

  • Getting a larger hard drive...and want to upgrade to Tiger...help!

    Hello everyone!
I have a dualie MDD with the stock 60 gig hard drive that I want to upgrade. I'd like a 200 or 250 gig hard drive.
Once I have the new hard drive installed, I'd like to upgrade to Tiger. But I'm lost as to how this process works. I know I'd need to clone my current OS, but then how do I clone it to the new drive once it's installed?
    Would I:
    1) Back my system up onto CD/DVDs/external drive/whatever
    2) Create clone of system using CCC or Disk Utilities
    3) Install new drive??
    4) ???
    5) Upgrade to Tiger??
I'm not sure if two drives running so close to each other inside the hard drive cage is a wise move considering how hot the inside of an MDD gets, so I may remove the 60 once everything is up and running.
So how do I go about this the right way? Detailed instructions would be very appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi, Pat!
First of all, get the new drive and install it. (Insure you buy an ATA drive and not a SATA drive.) If you need any assistance with installing, configuring, or initializing the drive, please post back.
In the interim, check for updates to your third-party apps to make sure that they will all be up-to-date and Tiger-compatible. Download a free copy of Superduper! or CarbonCopyCloner to later clone your startup drive. You can also use Disk Utility's Restore option for cloning, if you'd rather do so.
Next, you have a decision to make about the Tiger install. You can either upgrade it from Panther on your current drive, or do a fresh install of Tiger and use the Setup Assistant to incorporate your data from the Panther volume. I prefer and would recommend the latter as a much "cleaner" way of upgrading, leaving less "baggage" from the older OS. I would install Tiger directly to the new drive, which precludes the immediate need to clone anything while still leaving the original startup drive and system intact. If you'd rather do the upgrade install, then you should clone the Panther volume to the new drive, check the clone to insure it's okay, and install Tiger over Panther onto one drive or the other.
After installing Tiger, doing the software updates, moving your user files, apps etc. to the Tiger volume, you can run and test it for a week or so to insure all is well and that you have everything you need from the Panther drive. Once you're satisfied, you can then either retain the Panther volume as-is, using it as an alternate startup drive, or (preferably) you can instead erase it, zero it, and clone a copy of your Tiger volume to it as a backup and alternate startup drive.
Feel free to post back with any questions or concerns and one or more of the members will gladly address them.

  • Upgrade an iMac G3 to Panther or Tiger?

    Hello -
I'm upgrading my parents iMac DV G3/400 (firewire, DVD drive). I have ordered 512MB memory stick to augment the iMac's original 64MB.
I'm going to install OS X, but I'm not sure if Tiger or Panther will be a better choice. I have access to a license for both systems, and I just want to make the right choice so that the computer will be as easy to use as possible.
Do you feel I'd be better off running Tiger or Panther on this machine?
Also, do you think 576MB of RAM is sufficient to run OS X Tiger or Panther on this iMac?
Thanks so much for your help!
    Joe

I have been running Panther on my iMac G3 400mHz 384 mb since Nov. 2003 and have been quite happy with the performance. It is able to run iPhoto 2 and Photoshop Elements 2.0 very well although they are a bit slow. I won't likely upgrade the OS any further on this machine as it would not be cost effective and the performance would suffer. This is still a capable workhorse for us for mainly WP, Quicken, web surfing etc.
I am just getting into digital photography and was amazed that it immediately recognized my camera in iPhoto when I connected it. I didn't even have to load the software that came with the camera. My advice is the same as the others, go for Panther.

  • I deleted the "desktop" in tiger, can't "alias", "copy" or "drag & drop" anything to it now, I get a message that "desktop can not be changed"

I was trying to make an alias of "SAFARI" icon to have on the desktop & in the dock as well, I managed to make the safari icon appear on the desktop, but when I wanted to switch from firefox to safari it wouldn't open / start safari, so OK, no big deal, I moved it the trash, ( by rt. click,>move to trash>click ) the horror starts here, everything on the desktop disappeared into the trash !!!!! ......
So I have tried to "drag & drop", "alias", "copy", "duplicate" to get things back out of the trash, but every attempt is met with a message "the desktop con not be changed",   and whatever I try to bring anything out of the trash window, it gets a "minus - sign" added to it when it crosses over the edge of the trash window, and of course it jumps right back into the trash when the mouse button is released.
I think (barely) I will need the do a "clean install", or a "restore" from the install DVD to restore / get the desktop back.
And while the only thing on the desktop now is the HDD icon, clicking it open does not show the desktop in the Lf. column of the window where it should be, or any OS X folders when clicking on anything, but the OS is is running for this post and yahoo, etc., and there is a upward facing arrow next to the "network" name in the left column, that doesn't go away, like after installing some software, this is weird !!

Insert your  startup DVD  into your reader.  Power down your machine.  Hold down to the c key.  Power on your machine.  This will bootup your startup DVD.
This will bring you to a panel asking you for your language.  Pick your language.

    Click on the disk utility.
You are now in disk utility.  Pick your disk.  Click on repair it should be on the lower right of the panel.
Once the repair completes successfully, you should update your permissions.
    Verify a disk
As an alternative, you can verify that the filesystem on the disk is correct. You will not be able to repair the file system.
I suggest that you use disk utility to verify that your startup disk is OK.  Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility  Start up disk utility.  On the left pane view, you will see a list of all your disks.   click on your startup disk.  Click on the First Aid  Tab.  Click on verify.   Hopefully your disk will verify.  If not, you have to boot from your installation DVD and run Disk First Aid from there to attempt to repair your file-system.

  • No Tiger....?

Old PowerMac G4, 400MHZ, 896MB. trying to install Tiger on it. burned a copy of Tiger retail (on my 2009 MacBookPro, disk is readable there) and the G4 will not read it. tried with DVD- and DVD+ medias, same result. original (intel) OSX DVDs are readable for some reason on that machine, so i know its in fact a DVD drive and not cd, and that its working properly.
    Idea's ?

If you have the retail version of Tiger (black with silver X), why are you trying to use a burned copy? Just us the original. The license that came with the installer only allows the installation of Tiger on one Mac.
Your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. See Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 The update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.

  • OS X Tiger Loading Problem and Monitor Question

Ok guys, I have two questions for you Mac Experts.
    1. Yesterday, I was trying to load OS X Tiger, from CD onto my 400mhz Rev.2 Power Mac and I tried it about 5-9 times, and it kept giving me an error message saying that installation failed, or "Hold the power button, and hit reset". I took the hard drive out, put it in my slot loader iMac, and loaded up tiger onto that just fine, with no problems. So, it's not the CD's or the hard drive. The funny thing is that when i put the hard drive back into my power mac, it runs just fine. No problems. Do you think it is the CD Drive or what? Maybe a Logic Board Problem?
    2. I just picked up a Flat Screen iMac 1st gen. I was wondering if there was a cable that I could use to connect the iMac to my Power Mac and use the iMac as a screen for my Power Mac. The guy at the electronics store showed me some mac adaptor that would fit into my iMac, and that had a serial port at the end. Could i connect that serial end, into the serial port of my Power Mac and have it read as a monitor? If this is possible, that would be great. If not, i will stop being a cheap skate, and buckle down and purchase a flat screen monitor. Any help would be great.

Ok, let me see if this helps any.
I downloaded Dimm Memory check thing that you said, it it shows that all of my RAM is ok. All of my RAM is either pc 100 or pc 133, so no issues there.
I downloaded the most up to date firmware, and i said that my firmware is up to date. Dont know if loading it made it up to date, or if it already was.
The video card is the origial Rage 128 or something. Whatever came with the Power Mac, is in there.
I was just downloading updateds in tiger, and got that stupid error message to hold the power, and restart. I am going to try this machine now in tiger, and get back to you.
Also thanks for the link about the iMac Flat Screen. I will look into it.

  • Tiger install not recognizing hard drive

G3 desktop/400MHz/512 MB RAM/20 GB Western Digital EIDE HD/ OS X 10.4 retail install DVD.
My friend gave me the aforementioned Mac, minus the HD which he kept, but with the 10.4 install disk. The computer was working fine before.
I had a blank NTFS-formatted HD to use in it, and from reading Mac forums I knew the Mac wouldn't recognize it, so I used a PC to format it in FAT32 before the install.
    Install Steps:
    1. Booted, holding down the C key.
    2. Selected English as the language, but didn't click Continue.
    3. Went straight to Disk Utility, and the only drive it shows is the DVD drive
and the DVD itself. System Profiler shows everything but the HD.
While installing the OS I reached the "Select a Destination Volume" step, and the HD is not listed. The "Options" button is greyed out as well.
I went to the Terminal option and typed in "df -k" as a friend suggested, then went back to the "Select a Destination Volume" step, but the drive is still not listed.
Thinking it could be the drive (which was Windows-formatted and found zero errors on) I popped in another drive, with the same results. I also replaced the IDE cable, to no avail.
All cables are seated properly and the HD is receiving power.
This is my first Mac since 8.1 and I had planned on using this one to refamiliarize myself with the platform before buying a high-end model, so I'm pretty much flying blind here.
Any ideas on how to get the HD recognized?

    Okay, a bunch of things.
The Blue & White model comes in different flavors. The Rev. 1 is very conservative about hard drives it will accept. I believe it was known as the "Heartbreaker"

If the drive isn't being seen at all then that's something fundamental since even a Windows drive should be seen in Disk Utility. Are the jumpers set correctly on the drive? You might need to take this particular question over to the hardware forum.
