Tiger on eMac = Disaster!

I have upgraded a dual G5 to Tiger (10.4, 10.4.3 etc..)...no problems. Tried to do the same on an eMac (2nd Gen w/ATI) - DISASTER! eMac freezes afer several minutes of use (AND I MEAN A TOTAL FREEZE - HAVE TO PHYSICALLY SHUT IT DOWN). I tried, system restores, re-installing, software updates, ran hardware tests...you name it...spent over 72 hours to no avail. It just doesn't work. When I did my 5th sysem restore, I then chose to only update to 10.3 (Panther) - no problems. I am certain I am not the only one with this problem. Has anyone heard about incompatibilities with eMAcs and 10.4 becasue they do exist. I do no beleive it is my system as I have ran several well known apps testing for harware/software problems using 3rd party software as well as Apple's own harware tester. Everything checks out perfectly.

It's possible that one of the RAM modules is failing or not meeting spec for Tiger. Unfortunately, you can't remove the third-party module or you won't have sufficient RAM to run Tiger. The other possibilities are a dead internal backup battery causing PRAM corruption, a bad motherboard (unlikely since you say you've had no problems with Panther), may have some problem with the hard drive. Try doing an extended format (unless you've already tried this.)
1a (If this is the startup drive.) Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu if using Tiger.) Be sure to use the installer disk for the version of OS X you intend to install.
1b (If this is a non-startup volume or external drive.) Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

  • Will OS-X Tiger for eMac work with PowerMac G4 800mz?

I was about to purchase CD install, since I don't have a DVD, when I noticed it was labelled eMac. Will this work? I realize eMac needs special OS, but wondered if it would work the other way around.

No, the model branded OS X media will only work on the model that is specified.
If it's branded for an eMac, it will only work on an eMac.
You'll need to purchase a retail version of Tiger in order to install it on your PowerMac.

  • Upgrading 10.2.8 to Tiger on eMac

My sons have an eMac. It still has OS 10.2.8 on it. back in 2005, I tried to install Tiger upgrade onto it. We gave up then and they've been using OS X 10.2.8 since. Today, I decided I wanted to conquer this problem and upgrade it to Tiger, finally.
The problem with the eMac OS X install:
    1. I insert the Mac OS X install disc, and double click the install Mac OS X icon, then click Restart. The installer is supposed to open here, but it does not.
    2. eMac tries to restart, going to gray screen with apple icon, then blue screen. It never gets past the blue screen and stays "frozen" on blue for hours.
I've tried the above multiple times in the past and recently today. The mac guru at the apple store didn't offer much suggestion. Today I used Disk Utility and repaired the permissions. The same problem still exists.
    Any suggestions?

    700 Power Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

The problem may be that those machines do not have the optical drive that reads DVD. They are CD ROM's. You might be able to perform the install, using another PPC (non-Intel) machine, this way:
Note: Tiger must be on a retail black DVD version
    1. Launch the Host machine (must have firewire, and start with the Tiger DVD).
    2. Connect one, or both eMacs, with firewire cables.
    3. Start the eMacs, holding down the "T" key. They should appear on the Desktoop of the Host.
    4. Start the Tiger install process
    5. When you get to where you select the volume, pick one of the eMacs.

    Hi CJQ,
when did you buy the iBook? What sub-version are the Tiger install CDs?
If you bought the iBook in 2005 it shipped with either 10.4.2 or 10.4.4 (Mac OS: Versions, builds included with computers (since 1998)). If the Tiger install CDs are 10.4.0 it is expected bahaviour that you cannot install from them: Don't install older versions of Mac OS than what comes with your computer.
Be aware that you cannot use hardware specific disks that shipped with another computer.

  • DVD Burner for an eMac

Hi I have an eMac 1 GHz PowerPC G4 with 640 MB SDRAM and running OSX 10.4.8. I purchased the machine with only a CD Burner over a year ago. Now I would like to have add an external DVD burner. What will work with my machine? I have tried searching Apples site and visited my local CompUSA. Neither has been very helpful. Thanks for your assistance.

I actually just purchased a brand new Pioneer 111D 16x DVD Superdrive from eBay for $60. (This is the drive Apple installed in the latest G5's).It was extremely easy to install and even came bundled with software to install Tiger (grey eMac only disc), World Book encyclopedia, and Quicken software.
Being that my eMac is refurbished and doesn't have Apple Care (I purchased a similar plan through my insurance company instead) I had to do the installation myself. All I had to do was connect the cables and the drive booted the next time I turned my computer on. I'm not sure I can post non-Apple affiliated links but try an eBay search for "superdrive" if you're interested in that option.

  • Cant import Mailboxes and Messages since upgrading to Tiger

I exported all my mailboxes and messages in Mail under Panther. I then did a clean install of Tiger erasing the HD. If I import mailboxes from Mac OSX, then it doesn;t import anything. If I import mailboxes from "other" then it imports the empty mailboxes, but there are no messages inside. Rebuild is grayed out in the Mailbox menu, so that isn't an option. I have tried manually copying the mailbox folders, but to no avail.

I just had the same problem.
Trying to upgrade my G3 iBook from 10.2.8 to Tiger was a disaster (currently in the shop), so the long awaited new computer purchase happened a bit early. I have a firewire drive backup of my entire "house" profile, including the library, with all my mailboxes under the "Mail" folder.
Started my new G5 iMac, opened Mail 2.0.5, got it working, and then attempted the import function, going to the "Mail" folder on my external firewire drive. It imported about half of the folders, and nothing is in them (the older version of mail is whatever was last supported by 10.2.8).
When import didn't work, I tried to manually copy the mailboxes from the external firewire drive into the Mail directory - best I got was the same result - not all folders, and what I got was empty.
What's the deal? I expected Apple products to have trouble reading MS stuff, but I can't read email from an older version of Apple's Mail?
Please help... seems to be a common problem, but no answer.

  • How to install software on an imac that doesn't have DVD player built in?

I just got my daughter an imac G3 running OS 10.4.11. I went to install iwork onto the computer, and it spit the disc out. i then realized the computer does not have a DVD player built in. How do I install newer software? It runs and plays CD fine. Any help?

Since the other Mac is an eMac, it's a FireWire (400) cable, also called 6-pin to 6-pin. OWC has it.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/1394A66036/
I'm not sure if Radio Shack has it. Look for something like the above.
An eMac may be one of the models where the optical drive is not accessible over FireWire Target Disk Mode. If the hard drive and optical drive are on the same IDE bus, only the one that is set as Master (usually the hard drive) is available to the other Mac.
So give it a try. If it does not work (eMac's optical drive not accessible from the iMac), you will have to reverse the roles of the two Macs. Start up the iMac in FireWire Target Disk Mode. Connect it to the eMac that is started up normally. Set the eMac to start up from the iMac's hard drive in System Preferences +Startup Disk+ pane. If it's Tiger, your eMac should be able to start up from it. Restart. Insert the software disc and let the eMac install the software onto the iMac's hard drive. After installation completes, change the eMac's startup disk setting back, shut down the eMac, disconnect the FireWire cable, and restart the iMac normally.
Note: Unless you purchased the family license for iWork, it should only be installed on one Mac at a time.

  • Foreign audio after burning in iDVD

I am running iMovie with Tiger on eMacs. I have 13 computers in a classroom. Sometimes when I burn in iDVD, the burn is successful, but there is only identical foreign audio over the whole disk. I have four uses set up on each eMac. the foreign audio if from totally different user than the one I am logged into. This plays on both the theme upon loading the disk, and on every movie. Movies play fine in iMovie and when testing in preview in iDVD. Usually I trash preferences and this clears it up. Now, two of my computers are not fixed with this method. I got one to work after trashing and repairing preferences, rebooting, then rebuilding the iDVD project with a totally new project. Any ideas?

  • Self replacing Superdrive DVR-104 Any Tips - Have You Replaced It Yourself?

In a previous post I mentioned probably replacing the original DVR-104 Pioneer Superdrive myself. Has anyone done this on their own?
I have the complete Apple eMac repair manual, and it shows the complete procedure for: (in order)
    • Removing the outer eMac housing shell
    • Disconnecting the Power Button connection
    • Procedure for discharging the CRT (Using Apple Tool)
    • Removing the "Faraday Plate"
    • Removing the Apple Pioneer Superdrive
With the right Apple tools, precautions, and "repair" skills to
take on a repair of this nature, I am willing to replace the Superdrive myself. Especially in light of the fact that an Apple repair shop has quoted me over $450.00 to do this very same repair.
It seems pretty straight forward, and after buying the Apple CRT discharge Tool and a new Pioneer DVR-104 (in the next week or so), I'm planning on making the change.
Has anyone here ever replaced the Superdrive themselves? Can you offer any suggestions or tips that might make things go any smoother?
I will greatly appreciate your input. Thanks

I recently upgraded my eMac which is 2004 USB 2.0 model to a Pioneer 111D 16x Superdrive. Basically you follow the manual directions for removing the drive and then you plug in the new drive in its place and put your eMac back together. I found that turning the case 45 degrees makes it a lot easier to detach and re-attach the power button cable. I bought my drive from eBay for about $60 and it even came bundled with Tiger for eMac. I just swapped the drives, put the eMac back together, and the drive booted the next time I turned my computer on.
It doesn't take $450.00 worth of expertise, I'll tell you that. You just need the allan keys to take apart the case, a phillips head screwdriver, and maybe a flathead screwdriver to help you remove the Faraday plate. In replacing your superdrive, you really won't be coming in contact with the CRT capacitors so just make sure to touch a metal part in your compter to prevent static discharge like you would when installing memory. The only real tip I can give you is to keep your hands off the circuit board as best you can--you don't want to break it or get it dirty from the oils on your skin--thankfully the mounting rail for the drive makes this extremely easy.

  • Install Panther  on a G4 w/ Tiger to be installed on top of that ?eMac DVDs

FIRST, let me say that I know that I this a long post, thanks for bearing with me. If you would prefer NOT to deal with all of these issues then, please feel free to your option by dealing with only 1, 2 or 3, etc. of the issues.
    Hi,
I have several questions that I would like to get some clarification on.
    A) To start with has anyone dealt with Fastmanc.com and had any kind of problems in regards to ordering older versions of Mac OSs and/or being sent machine specific Install packages that didn't match what you used, e,g, sent eMac install for use on a G4?
I've ordered a full installation package for Panther and with it comes with an updating CD for the updates through 10.3.9.
1)However, they told me that they were the install DVDs for an eMac. They guaranteed(not in writing) me that I would not have problems doing the install even though I have a G4 DP. I ordered these OS install DVDs after questioning them quite closely about this issue. At present I'm running a G4 DP 500(GigabitEthernet) with 512 MB of RAM, 2. ATI Radeon videocards and I have a completely updated version of 10.2.8(security patches et al). Will the fact that I'm using the install package for an eMac bring any problems my way during the installation and afterwards? If so, what kind and how serious a set of problems are likely to occur? I don't understand why having a more powerful and flexible setup wouldn't be able to handle the install from an eMac?
    2) The install DVDs for 10.4 are the update version again for the eMac and a CD with all of the Apple OS updates. The CD contains all of the updates through OS 10.4.11. Should I be aware of any issues during the installation process for Tiger?
    3) My HD(actually, I have 3) the original 40 GB is a Hitachi/IBM Deskstar, which is slaved to a new Seagate 120 GB, and an external Maxtor 1 Touch 300 GB HD, the Maxtor is used for auto backup(Retrospect 6.0.195).
a)I have partitioned the Seagate into 4 segments, 1) Seagate 10.2., 2) Seagate 10.3, 3) Seagate 10.4 and 4) Seagate 9.0 (for all of Apple OS 9 legacy software, 3rd party apps, and all of the work that I produced while using OS 9, etc.) The Hitachi/IBM has three partitions and all are almost completely full.
    4) Installation locations
4a) Now what I'm wondering is, when I install all of Panther, will I be able to install it in the partition designated S.G. 10.3.? IF not, into what partition is it likely to end up?
4b) Being that 10.4(Tiger) is an upgrade version installation will it automatically attach/install itself into the same partition where Panther installed? Or, can I designate it to install into the partition that I labeled as S.G. 10.4? This is where I would prefer to have it install.
4c) If 10.4 does install into the S.G. 10.4 partition will it function seamlessly being that it is separated from 10.3 which it is supposed to install itself over the top of? (I believe that the correct Tech description for this process.)
    5) If there is anything that I haven't thought of, haven't made clear or if you have any caveats or other suggestions, then please feel free to include them.
Thanks for whatever assistance that you may provide.

    Hi,
first thing is to check that you have the updated firmware for you GE installed.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
If you have any OS installed run Apple System profiler and check the versiom, it should be 4.2.8
You need an OS 9 installation to be able to run the firmware update in case the firmware is old.

  • Warning about bizarre eMac Tiger installation problem due to memory

I'm a fairly proficient user. I've upgraded the OS on my 800MHz eMac (original version with NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics) many times. This time, while upgrading to Tiger, I blew almost an entire weekend trouble-shooting the machine. I'm posting this so others on the forum can hopefully save themselves some time.
My machine came from the factory with 256MB RAM and a Superdrive. I had the AppleStore add another 256MB of RAM when I bought the machine in Nov 2002. This was Apple-branded RAM, not third-party.
When I tried to upgrade to Tiger, the installation would proceed through all the DVD media and system hard-drive tests, then succesfully install one or more packages. It would then fail with the "Please try to install again" message. The installation log was showing messages about file corruption. I was able to re-install Panther from CD, which eliminated optical drive failure from the list of possible problems.
I ran all of the hard-drive checks in Drive Genius and my drive passed. I ran all of the Apple Hardware Tests from my original system CD. Then I found some warnings on the Apple site about marginal third-party RAM causing this kind of problem. I first rejected this line of approach, since I had Apple RAM.
Eventually I ran out of "normal" trouble-shooting, so I decided to pull the extra memory module as a last resort prior to replacing the hard drive. Once I did this, the installation ran flawlessly using the original 256MB of RAM.
The message here is that EMAC MEMORY PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN EITHER DVD I/O OR TIGER-SPECIFIC INSTALLATION. Check your memory before cracking open the rest of the machine, even if all the Apple hardware tests say the memory is OK.
I have new memory on the way from OWC and will follow-up with status when I get some runtime on it.
As an aside, I upgraded to Tiger from Panther mainly to get the increased parental controls (this machine is destined for my kids). Now that I have Tiger, I am pleasantly impressed by the other refinements as well.
    E-Mac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The RAM test on the Apple Hardware Test disc is a compromise between being throrough and completing in a reasonable amount of time. Memtest (especially if run in single-user mode as per it's instructions) offers a more throrough test.

  • How to transfer files from emac and tiger to iMac

I am getting a new intel based iMac.  How can I transfer from old eMac with Tiger OS?

What you're going to need to do is physically transfer files from your old computer to the new one. Just doing a migration will not work.
What kind of information do you want to transfer?
    1. Connect the computers onto the same network. I'd recommend using an ethernet cable over a wireless network.
    2. On your old computer, go into system preferences> sharing> and turn on file sharing.
    3. Repeat step 2 on your new computer.
    4. On your new computer, go into the Finder, open a new window. Underneath "shared" on the left hand side you should see your old computer. Select the computer and connect as the admin user of your old computer (so use your old username and password).
    5. Inside of this finder window, you can navigate to the files you want to transfer.

  • Intel Tiger on an eMac (G4 - PPC)

    Hi there,
Will an iMac (Intel Model) Install Disk Tiger work on a G4 eMac? I'm looking at upgrading to Tiger and there's a copy on eBay - but it says Intel Mac version.
    Cheers

iLife's last retail release was made Universal, meaning it runs on PowerPC and Intel both. Any software which is Universal does that.
Included Mac OS X installer discs, Parallels and Boot Camp are among the very few software titles that will run on Intel Macs only. Most software that runs on Intel Macs will run on PowerPC Macs assuming the PowerPC Mac has sufficient RAM and a fast enough processor and GPU. A few games require more GPU power than is found on most PowerPC Macs, though for many other applications that's not necessary. I always go by the "recommended" system requirements more than the "minimum" to guess whether or not my software can be installed on my Mac.
And anyone getting rid of their Intel installer discs is a fool. They'll need those discs to troubleshoot issues with their Mac. Now they may be trying to offload them to people who lost their Intel installer discs, but usually you can get replacement discs from AppleCare if they are lost or stolen for a nominal fee.
Edit: iLife does not come with the Tiger retail installer, and has to be purchased separately, if you have a Mac that didn't come with that version of iLife.
The iLife found on the discs that came with another Mac are usually licensed only for use with that Mac. So be sure the person selling those discs does not have iLife installed on any other Macs from those discs. Otherwise it is not their's to sell.

Can the Tiger DVD installation discs of an iMac or eMac be able to be installed on a G4 Powermac running Panther, please?

You bet. Besides that you'd be violating the software terms of agreement you agreed to by installing an OS on several machines at the same time.

  • Emac 1ghz Can't Install Pather or Tiger...

I have a 1ghz Emac with a 40gb drive and I can't seem to install any new OS - Tiger or Panther.
I have booted with either the Tiger or Panther disc used Disk Utility to verify the internal 40gb drive, erased it and wrote zeros. The drive seemed to be great. If I try to install either OS though, I get and error. Something like "There were errors, try to install again"
Also, just to point out - I have used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy a working Tiger install over to it and that has worked but only for so long. Eventually the drive stops booting. -It has passed the S.M.A.R.T. diagnosis too.
Any one run into this? I have been a Mac geeks since the early 90s and nothing has confused me this much before.
    Thanks much for any help.
    -David

    Eventually the drive stops booting
Why would that be with a good clone? Have you run a surface scan with a utility like TechToolPro? It's possible there are bad blocks that are not being masked out when writing zeros or some other physical drive damage. S.M.A.R.T will not detect bad blocks unless they are about to create a drive failure.
EDIT: Also Javier's suggestion abou ram is a good one, you can use this utility:
