Tiger on PowerBook G4

I would like to upgrade from Panther (10.3.9) to Tiger 10.4.x.
My Computer is PowerBook G4.
Questions are:
1. Do I need to upgrade RAM (current is 512) and other hardware before installation?
2. Would the softwares such as Adobe CS (Not CS2) and Macromedia 2004 would still be running on the Tiger? Or do I have to upgrade all the programs?
Thanks in advance

The RAM is OK but Adobe CS applications need as much RAM as possible.
Both Adobe CS and Macromedia 2004 work fine with Tiger.
Mihalis.

  • My experience with Tiger/new Powerbook 15", 1.67 ghz

Apple proclaims "Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger. The world’s most advanced operating system."
Well, that hasn't been the case in my experience.
I bought a new 15 Powerbook HR, 1.67 ghz, 1.5 gb ram, 80gb hd on 11/4/05 (from MacMall). At this point I have about 20gb free.
Problems I have noticed with it/OSX.(Most have been fixed by an archive and install done a few weeks ago.) Here's my trial by fire.
    In chronological order
    - trackpad lags
    - many icons not correct after using Migration Assistant.
    - some icons open up the wrong applications
    - window resize button on Finder, and some app windows, doesn't open window to full screen. Also doesn't open window so that scroll bars disappear.
    - dragging a file up or down a window in list view doesn't always make the window scroll up or down when I go up or down to the top or bottom edges. When they do move, it races. Smooth scrolling has no effect.
    - CDr recorded on a machine with OSX 10.3.9 shows up as a recordable CD!
    - screen dims when I disconnect power supply
-Network option from the Go menu does nothing.
    - Doing a Get Info on a html file has Internet Explorer as the app to open when the files have Mozilla icons
    - icon for some apps have wrong application logo on them
    - screen dims and brightens rapidly, disconcertingly in low light. I turn off the ambient light adjustment on the monitors control panel. This is poorly implemented. Having the keys light up is nice though.
    - can't reset F7 key to take pictures of screen. (I eventually am able to do it.)
    - the clicker gives me a sharp pain in my arm from the second day of use. This has gotten better now but I was worried I might be getting carpal tunnel/repetitive stress injury. (This happened when I got my new Powerbook Firewire too, eventually going away.) The clickers are too stiff when new.
    - I call Applecare. They don't have my registration information I gave them when I signed up on the web. We reset the Power Manger.
    - Quicktime movies have no sound. I later throw out the LAME stuff (Component and Framework) and get sound back.
    - I go to Genius at Apple Store. They tell me I am using a non-native resolution, that is why I am having screen dimming. (Wrong. It was the ambient light control.) They also say whatever software I have installed is likely to be causing most of the other problems.
    - I get Finder freeze #1
    - Preview does not animate gifs. It did with 10.3.9.
-System sounds do not work. Upon reboot they do. Flakey.
    - some finder windows are not opening up with the item count in list view.
    -desktop gets rearranged
-occasionally keyboard turns letters into numbers as if number lock is on. It isn't. The it will stop working altogether. Rebooting cures this. (Happens twice before I call AppleCare.)
    - call AppleCare. They have my old address when I bought the Powerbook! I get registered again.I cannot install GarageBand, which I threw out thinking I didn't need it, because the install DVDs that came with my machine have an error reading the software only package. They will send me a new install disk #1.
    - scrolling is not smooth, races.
    - I notice the memory door has 3 out of the 4 screws loose. I tighten them. The battery door feels a little loose too but that is unfixable.
    - keyboard doesn't respond #3
    - I call AppleCare. They have the wrong address still in their database!
-eject DVD does not work. (It works all other times.)
    - system freeze #2
    - kernal panic #1
    - Call AppleCare. My TechTool Deluxe CD will not boot. I ask for a replacement. (I can't believe they are still using TechTool Deluxe. I remember what a hassle it was trying to get a working disc with my Powerbook Firewire.
    - keyboard types wrong characters #4
-Print preview does not work. (it does all other times.)
-Preference for video capture program (BTV) is not remembered
    - audio is only heard when BTV is running (since fixed.)
    - system freeze #3
    - keyboard stops working #5
    - I call Apple Care. We zap P-ram 3X.
    - file sizes incorrect in list view. Have to open window a second time to get correct info.
    - install DVD #1 arrives. It is defective.
    - system freeze #4
    - I update to 10.4.4. I hope this will cure the problems. Nope.
    - Help doesn't work.
    - Battery firmware update process works but isn't smooth. It crashes "unexpectedly" as I check to make sure it is really done. (It kept telling me I needed to do it.)
    - Help works.
    - boot takes forever after 10.4.4 update.
    - battery firmware update wants to run again.
    - file size is wrong in finder list view windows.
    - keyboard stops working #6
    - fan stops yet processor is still VERY busy as I am calibrating battery. Charge is about 5%.
    - I quit IMovie, It then says it quit "unexpectedly". (This happens with other apps still.)
    - I have to use power key to wake it from sleep, as I calibrate battery.
    - keyboard problem #7
    - system freeze # 5
    - text editing in iDVD is very buggy. Cursor is impossible to see against background with many themes. There is no way to increase cursor size.
    - AppleCare says they have sent TechTool Deluxe CD. I haven't gotten it yet.
    - I receive install disk #1. 2 actually. I install software bundle only. It works! I also reinstall CPU help files. Help still doesn't work.
    - I archive and install. (It installs 10.4.2 so I update to 10.4.4), Help doesn't work.
    - Help works without my having done anything. OK.
    - I repair a gazillion permissions. (funny how when you install the system software the permissions then need to be repaired. You would think the system would know to set the permissions correctly upon installation.
    - I notice the order of the right hand menu items has changed (clock, keyboard setup, OS 9 icon...)
    - file sizes wrong in list view
    - BTV has audio loop at times. (See thread on Topic "New Powerbook Audio Stutter / Looping / Echo problem in Using your PowerBook G4 15-inch Aluminum forum.)
    - keyboard problem #8
    - keyboard problem #9
    - I call AppleCare. TechTool Deluxe CD has still not arrived. We discuss other problems. I get hung up on.
    -keyboard problem #10
    - I go to Apple Store. Talk to the genius. He tells me the system software is "a house of cards", adding other software can cause unpredictable results. He zaps P-ram 3x, does something in open firmware. Recommends a clean install. I think about it and later decide not to.
    - I lose system sounds after I install USBVison video capture driver for Tiger. I eventually get it back.
    - I repair LOTS of permissions.
    - The fan starts to make bad noise.
    - system freeze $6
    - I do a Get Info on a file I making with BTV. The OS tells me it is 11GB. I stop the recording and then I check again. It says it is 1.5 gb.
-iChat won't open. It starts, according to Activity Monitor, runs for about two seconds and then disappears.
    - Network, under the Go menu, does nothing.
    - I call AppleCare.
    - I notice cursor disappears in Firefox.
    - Yahoo IM icon keeps getting moved. All the icons it is next to are spaced about the same but this one keeps getting moved.
    - I Stuff some stuff. The fan keeps running, it is still hot after I am finished. I have to reboot to get things back to normal.
    - Some icons for PING files on my desktop have changed from having Preview icons to Quicktime icons. I use Get Info to change them back from Picture Viewer (OS 9!)
    - the fan comes on with only my normal apps running (Eudora, Firefox, Yahoo IM)
Ok, that is about all up 'til now. I still haven't gotten my TechTool Deluxe CD but need to give that a few more days. I now have 8 install DVDs. (Another install #1 came yesterday, making a total of 6 #1, and 2 #2s) The address on the invoices are finally correct, most had the wrong town but the right zip code which I had corrected many times.
The problems that are still recurring are the keyboard problem, applications still sometimes crash "unexpectedly" even though I am quitting them, the file sizes are not right the first time around in finder list view windows. Most everything else was cured by the archive and install. Little weirdnesses still crop up though. I am not sure if the echo problem has been fixed. (Mac OS) Help is still slow to appear.
Thanks for bearing with me. I do hope things get smoother in the future. I have been using Macs for about 10 years now, starting with a used SE and 7.something, going to a refurbished LC 580 and 7.5.5, a new Powerbook Firewire and 9.2.2. I have also used 10.3.9 which seemed to be a lot more stable than 10.4.
    Cheers,
    John L

If it was me I would backup to DVD/ External HD if you have and erase / reinstall OSX.
Update all and once you are finished without the user folder / any of your files on torture the Pbook to see if this happens again.
This likely will be able to give you an idea about hardware or software problems.
If all is well , likely not then copy "COPY" over from the backup you "ONLY COPY" documents, music, Photo's, desktop stuff and also place programs back in Applications folder.
The reason for the above is that in the /user/"you"/library folder it stores the settings for Icon's, prefferences to programs and some other useless stuff + E-mails for either Mac Mail and or Microrubish Entorture "entourage" depending on what you have or used also Itunes prefs.
Once this is copied leave the "/user/you/library" stuff alone and see how it runs.
App's/programs will ask to have it's preferences set again as if /when you have installed it for the first time.
Likely most of the issues if software was in the/becuase of the settings in "/user/you/library".
If this solves a lot of problems the go with care and copy the "E-MAIL +/OR ENTORUTE/ENTOURAGE + ITUNES" to the same place as where they came from but obviously in /user/you/library/ subfolders etc. same subfolders.
For Entorture search for a file called "database" as this holds all the e-mail for entourage and by copying it, when you next open Entorture it will pick-up all emails + adresses etc like it was never moved also in the same spot as it was in the new instalation / subfolders etc..
If all this fails and you as close to what I reccomended here, there is then still some issues then likely it is hardware related.
How do I know this : Had for 5 times in 365 days had my Pbook in for repair so I have had to about 120+ times had to reinstall OSX 10.3.9 and/or Tiger.
I hope this helps as for hardware I am buying Alienware or Extreme as they can upgrade the cpuvideobasically all else except the motherboard " amd opteron 64 dualcore + Nvidia fx quadro 1400 + 1 or 2 hd's + 1/2 dvd's etc. etc. $2500"

  • Errors installing Tiger on PowerBook G4

after noticing some erratic application behavior, i decided to reinstall Tiger (retail copy) onto my PowerBook -- a clean format and install. i have been unable to install Tiger or Panther (from the original system disks that came with the PB) each time i get the dreaded "There were errors installing the software" message. fearing that the hard drive was dying or dead, i had it replaced with a new drive and ... still ... i can't get Tiger (or Panther) to install.
the log for the last Tiger attempt reads:
BomFileError 2: No such file or directory - ./System/Library/Essentials/NVDANV30Hal.kext/Contents/MacOS/NVDVNV30Hal
    Install failed.
is there a great FAQ on the Tiger install issues? any help is appreciated.

The only way to definitely check the DVDs is to use them on another machine and see if you can install the SW there. Hook up an external FWHD to the iMac and give it a go. As for HW problems, run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the PB. Very strange problem. If the PB is still under warranty, maybe it's time to consider returning it or taking it into an Apple store (if one's close by).

  • Problem reinstalling Tiger onto Powerbook

Recently I upgraded from my 12" Powerbook to a new Macbook Pro, leaving my dad my old computer. I erased everything and wanted to reinstall the system.
Everything went well with the erase and install until I got to inserting CD2. After that, in the middle of the process it shows an error and says I should try again. I eject the CD, it tells me to reinsert it and it happens all over again.
Anyone know how to solve that? It happens as it tries to install garage band as it would seem.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
On the Powerbook. Check the boot disk for errors.
Shut down the PBook. Now, press the power button, hold down the C key, and insert the restore disk all at the same time. Keep holding down the C key until you see the Apple logo. An Installer window will open but DO NOT proceed with any installations, instead from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Disk Utility. In the DU window, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab and click: Verify If DU reports errors, click Repair. When it's finished, from the Menu Bar select Utilities/Startup Disk and select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
    Now try reinstalling Tiger.

  • Installing tiger on powerbook with broken screen

I am attempting to install Tiger on an older Powerbook (G4 Titanium 1ghz 1gb), which has a damaged and illegible LCD. The machine is fully up to date with 10.3.9, and works fine connected to a Cinema display.
After booting from the 10.4 install DVD, it appears that the updater wants some kind of input, but this is not being echoed to my external monitor. I've tried it with display mirroring both off and on, but to no avail. Does the update work only with the onboard monitor when it senses a Powerbook ? And if so, are screencaps out there somewhere so that I can try to answer the install prompts while flying blind ?
    thanks !
    Powerbook G4 Titanium   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I don't know about the external monitor, but you can install OSX on any Firewire disk.
To boot from that blind Mac, plug in the blind Mac to a working Mac with a Firewire cable. Boot the blind Mac holding the "t" key down (for Target). The blind machine's hard disk should appear in the other Mac's mounted disk list. Proceed to install on the Firewire mounted disk.
Once that is done, boot from the blind Mac's hard disk and finish the setup. To do this, start it up while holding down the "t" key. Shut down other Mac and hold down the option key while starting. The "Restart" menu item may not work here, so you may need to completely shut down and start from the power button.
Now you see the screen to choose what disk to boot from. Boot from the blind disk and your working Mac will be running from the blind Mac's hard disk and you can set it up for remote login, etc.

  • Installing Tiger on PowerBook G4 - CD keeps ejecting

Hello - I am looking to give my old PowerBook G4 to someone who does not own a computer. I did a clean install of the PowerBook G4 OS system CD that came with the unit when I bought it new. I then did all the updates. The computer shows the OS version as 10.3.9 and has 1GB RAM. I wanted to upgrade it to Tiger, but the CD drive keeps ejecting back the Tiger CD. I know..... very rude. (The CD/DVD drive itself is fine, as it accepted the 10.3 G4 CD just fine.) I did many searches on this issue, but could not find a answer. Is it a Firmware thing? What's a good guy to do so he can give this fine looking PowerBook G4 to someone who can use it?  (I would just leave it with the 10.3.9, but what bugs me is that Facebook.com does not appear correctly........ weird?! Lets you sign in, but can't see any page content.) Thanks for any help!

Do you have some other DVD (movie?) that you could place in the disc drive to see if the drive will read it? The drive has separate read optics for CDs & DVDs. Could be dust on the DVD lens. You could buy a cleaning disc & put it in your drive.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Install mac os tiger on powerbook g4

    Hi all
I have just received a 'old' powerbook g4 without harddrive. After I have installed a ned harddrive , it was ready for test. But what ever key I press (with the install dvd in the drive), the only screen to come up, was a blue one with to small faces in the middle. If I then pressed option key, a screen with a lock (locked) and password field appeared on the screen.
    What is wrong?
And how can I install Mac os (is my cd broke).
    My powerbook g4:
    1.33MHz
    1 Gb ra
    80 GB HD

    Thanks..
But which version do i need for my g4 1.33?

  • Tiger 12" Powerbook - Wake Up Triggers

I'm retiring my powerbook from use as my primary computer, and I'm trying to figure out if I can change the triggers that wake it up from sleep, so I can use it as an iTunes box in my car. (This is kind of a pet-project, plus my aux-in jack in my car is in an inconvenient place, so just buying an iPod is not an ideal solution).
The computer needs to be asleep when the car is off so that it doesn't drain the laptop or car batteries, but when I turn on the car, I don't want to have to access the computer to wake it up. Once the computer is awake, I can control iTunes remotely.
    So the trick is:
    (1) Make the computer wake up when the car is on, i.e. the AC line is plugged in.
    (2) Make it sleep when the AC adaptor is no longer connected to a power supply.
    (2) is obviously easy, simply by setting the computer's sleep settings to fall asleep in a minimum amount of time, but (1) is less trivial.
I've been playing around with /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
which has integer fields with default values:
    Wake On AC Change 0
    Wake On Clamshell Open 1
By changing wake on Clamshell Open to a value of 0, I can get my computer to not wake up when I open it up and it's sleeping, but changing Wake On AC Change to 1 (in both the Battery Power and AC Power preferences) seemingly does nothing to the behaviour of the computer. I haven't been able to find any info on what this option actually does.
So does anyone have any thoughts on what this bit of the .plist file actually does if not what I'm thinking, and is there any other way to get the computer to wake up from sleep upon plugging in the AC power line?
A second thought would be using the "allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer from sleep" feature, but I consider this not a very clean solution, and will avoid it if possible.
    Cheers
    Dan

    Okay, I figured it out.
Playing with the .plist file was giving inconsistent results for some reason. Instead, use the pmset command in Terminal. Setting acwake to 1 does what you would expect.

  • Tiger, Panther, powerbook, mac mini & iPod problem...

Is it possible to connect my Powerbook (running on 10.3.9) to my Mac Mini (10.4.1), so they can swap files and/or connect to the internet?
    Here's the story:
I just bought a new ipod classic.
It only runs on my mac mini... however my mac mini isn't connected to the internet.
(not wireless and only hard line is already taken)
My laptop is wireless and has internet access.
I want to transfer the pictures and movies I've downloaded on my powerbook to the mac mini, and/or use the powerbook's wireless connection to get online with the mac mini.
But I don't know how or if it's even possible as they're on two different operating systems...
    Does anyone know?
    Thanks!

  • Installing Tiger on Powerbook G4's new hard drive

The hard drive in my G4 PB (bought 2nd hand, without start up disks) died recently and I got a used replacement HD with same volume and speed.  Physical replacement and partition went ok, now to install the Tiger 10.4.  However the black Tiger disk seems to be defective, as I get a failure due to fingerprints or scratches; the software will not install after cleaning and polishing the disk.  Fortunately, I have an iMac Snowball running 10.4.11 and hooked it up by Firewire.  The Apple website has a "MacOSXUpdateCombo10.4.11PPC.dmg" which is sitting on my desktop.  (I accidently tried to open it and it screwed up my System Preferences Start up Disk choice, giving me the flashing earth in a square on a grey screen error.  That took some detours but is fixed.)
So, it seems logical that I could take the .pkg update and drop it into the Target Disk Hard Drive showing up on the desktop.  Or, maybe open the hard drive symbol and drop the update into it.  After searching the Support Communities all day today, I cannot find a discussion along these lines, so here I am.  Can anyone help on this?

    2) If you look at the updater you will see it is likely only a few tens if maybe 100 MB, a full Tiger OS is several GB (it originally came on multiples CDs).
    1) I'm not 100% clear on your resources.  If your USB backup was created by cloning you could start the PB in Target mode so it appears on your iMac as an external hard drive, then clone the USB to the PB.  Here's some information:

  • Tiger Crashing, PowerBook not waking up, Keychain not happy, etc.

My PBk17 G4 1.67 has been behaving irradically since I set up a second user and enabled fast user switching, upgraded to 1GB of Apple RAM, and installed the software for my new HP PCS 1510 all in one. It is running must faster with the two users, now that I have more RAM, but- it will generally not wake up from sleep, has to be force-restarted, and on several occasions, and again twice this morning, after my force-restarting, I get this ominous gray floating warning telling me I have to force restart my computer (the message is also in a few other languages).
Everytime I have to restart, it tells me that it cannot find Bonjour, then I have to put in my keychain password, and Keychain wants my mail password, and Virex cannot connect to the server for an e-update. It is generally not happy right now.
I have done all of my software updates, repaired my preferences, and I don't know what to try next.

  • Cannot Get My Powerbook To Work With New Hard Drive

My powerbook (1.67 ghz, 2 gb ram, 80 GB original hdd) was running out of room on the hard drive, so I purchased a WD 250 GB hard drive IDE to replace it. I haven't really done much on my powerbook prior to this, so I wasn't sure exactly if any problems had occured before I did this. But I replaced the drive and tried to boot from a CD and could not do it. I was using a Tiger Retail disc because I can't find my restore discs. I never had any problem reading my discs prior to this, as I have a DVD/RW drive and it has never failed on me. I tried booting from other discs as well and the same problem occured. So after several failed attempts, I connected my powerbook to my ibook through target mode and was able to install the OS on the partition of my powerbook. After completing the install, I was able to access the powerbook partition through the ibook and everything seemed fine. I unplugged the firewire cable and tried to boot my powerbook. The first time I did it, it took me past the white and grey apple screen and stuck on the blue screen, everytime after that, it hung up on the grey and white screen. I tried resetting everything through open firmware and zapping the PRAM, but no change. I tried booting into safe mode and it hung up at the grey and white screen. I was able to boot into single user mode and ran the check utility and everything came up ok. I reconnected the powerbook to the ibook and ran disk utility that way and repaired all permissions. It still has hung up on me. I've been trying to get this to work for almost 8 hours and nothing has worked for me. I'm starting to think its something really serious like a hardware failure. I don't know what version of tiger my powerbook shipped with and I'm not sure if having just 10.4 would cause this issue. I tried removing the added ram and everything as well. I hope someone can give me some things to try and hopefully get it to work. I'm pulling my hair out on this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One way to know if it is a hardware issue (or something you may have done in the DIY upgrade process, sorry) is to try putting back in the old stock 80GB drive and see if everything works well.
If YES, then your PowerBook is fine and it is your new drive that is faulty. Return it or get a replacement under warranty (if relatively new, maybe you don't need to use the warranty).
If NO, then something has happened during the upgrade process.
    That's my first diagnosis.

  • Tiger 10.4 "retail" or "installer" for upgrade?

Have a shiny new iMac with Tiger, want to add Tiger to Powerbook G4 (10.3.9). Do I need to buy a full, new, retail version of Tiger (waiting a while before tackling Leopard), or can I use an installer CD/DVD say that I buy off of ebay? Or even a "used" retail?
I ask because there are of course lots of disks on ebay and other sites, not sure if they'd be of any help to me or no since, according to the licensing agreements, those disks are all for only one machine.?? Am sure I am overthinking this, making it too hard, just need to know.
Considering a target disk mode install of Tiger (firewire from iMac to PB using those installer disks), but want alternatives. Thanks in advance.

Forget to post, I understand I need an OS build for an older machine, not an Intel-based computer. Just want to make sure I get the proper version of Tiger to successfully update the Powerbook. Thanks.

  • Contacts and calendar will not sync.. music play lists will

    hello all,
i have a 4gb iphone that i bought in july. since updating to 1.1.3 i am unable to sync contacts and calendar. i have tried turning phone off and on, ejecting, unplugging, repluggin, and even a full restore, still am unable to sync my contacts and calendar. anyone haveing a similar problem? any help would greatly appreciated, thank you for your time

I, too, have this problem since updating my 8GB iPhone to 1.1.3. I primarily sync my iPhone with my Tiger-running Powerbook G4, where my calendars, contacts, and music files are. However, I followed your direction of resetting iSync, and it did not work. I, then, plugged my iPhone into my Tiger-running MacBook Pro and it worked (and I did not reset iSync). Maybe this problem is due to Intel vs. PowerPC?
We need to alert Apple. I have to go get this figured out for me... I will be visiting the Genius Bar this weekend because I can't be syncing my contacts, and such, on my MacBook Pro 24/7.
