Tiger onto Lacie d2 from ibook then boot to my iMac G5?

My iMac G5 second gen wont start up after a erase and install to factory and then i installed Tiger upgrade. Apple screen appears and then after about a minute a really choppy, what looks to be a blue screen comes up and goes right to a ambient black. I still see my pixel thats dead though and can hold option on startup and the chooser for startup disk shows. Sorry for getting of my ? but will my firewire disk start even Tiger came of Ibook
Thanks to anyone who could help

From your post title, it sounds like you installed Tiger onto an external FireWire disk from your iBook, then tried booting this FireWire disk on your iMac, is that correct? If that is the case, your computer won't be able to boot from the FireWire disk, because the G5 processor in the iMac uses a slightly different code than the iBook's G3 or G4 processor. You can still use the iBook's installer CD or DVD on the iMac, and Tiger should install fine, because it will install the software for G5 based computers.

  • How do I save documents from iBooks on iPad to my iMac?

I am upgrading to iPad Air 2. Yeay! I am backing up everything on my old iPad (3rd generation), preparatory to erasing it to hand it on to a family member. There are documents I have saved into iBooks on my old iPad that are nowhere else, all categorised, and this represents a lot of work over several years. I have already lost a lot of these, when I updated the system recently. (Why is that?) I can easily save documents or other media to my iMac (27 inch, late 2013, Yosemite 10.10.2) from just about every other app, Apple and non-Apple, but not iBooks! What is that about? And how can I save the ones I still have? Do I have to email each one to myself? (The only solution I have thought of so far.)

You can manually add the files to your iTunes library...on Apple's support pages:
"To add PDFs to your iTunes library on your computer, drag and drop the PDF into your iTunes Book library. If you're using OS X Mavericks or later, drag and drop your PDFs into your iBooks library using iBooks for Mac."

  • Can I switch out a hard drive for an SSD without having to clone the existing hard drive, and then install Yosemite from an USB Boot Drive onto the new SSD?

Can I simply replace a hard drive with a new SSD and just install Yosemite from a USB boot drive onto the SSD? I recently bought a used MBP and it has absolutely no files on it except for the OS, and so I'm assuming I don't need to clone the current hard drive as I can just reinstall the OS onto the new SSD.

Just a quick follow up question, is formatting the SSD with HFS+ done in Disk Utility?...
It's possible that the SSD will be set up for use on a PC, which means it will have a Master Boot Record partition table rather than a GUID Partition Table, which is what Yosemite needs. In Disk Utility, select the SSD and click the Partition button. Create a new Partition Layout and click the Options... button at the bottom. You'll likely see MBR is selected. Choose GUID instead and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the Format.

  • Upgrading from 10.3.9 to Tiger onto iMacG4 (flat panel)

    Ok, heres the issue.
When attempting to solve some minor software issues with a co-workers compy, (mail and safari would bounce once and fail to operate) i chose the Archive and Install option from OSX 10.4.X and what not. Her old version was OSX.3.9. This is a RETAIL copy of the disc (black label) installing onto a machine that from the system reqs' says that it should work. Upon starting the installation, Tiger checks the install DVD and then proceeds to check the target volume. The Installation Fails sometimes after checking the target disk, others after getting as far as "other applications". "Please Try Installing Again". This has happened 7 or 8 times now. The disk drive has been ZEROED twice now, and still recieve the same errors. Sometimes it fails after the asian language support, others right in the middle of the BSD sub-system.
Am i headed for a HDD failure? Or is this some psycho monday?
BTW, the logs would mention that they couldnt read the packages on the HDD. Other errors said 'IO' problems.

We tried to work around it but to no avail. 3rd party pieces were removed. Original disc used. Every TechTool Pro test was ran and passed exhausted. Witnessed a grey/black error screen with EVERY install. We Zero'd the drive about 5 times now.

The good news, is that I get to tool with a shiny G5 tomorrow.

  • Help reverting to Tiger from Leopard - No boot from CD

    Hi there,
I am trying to revert to Tiger from Leopard on an Intel iMac that used to run Tiger. My plan is to wipe the drive and start fresh. Unfortunately, the computer will no longer start up from the Tiger installer DVD or an extrenal drive running Tiger. I am running 10.5.2. Has there been a ROM upgrade or something that prevents now Tiger from running? Any ideas?

Can I please ask a question.
I have leopard (10.5.2) installed on an intel Imac. I have just bought a Formac mini disk (160G USB) because I would like to install Tiger on it. When I bought the Imac it originally came with Tiger (Version 10.4.2) and the disk from what I am reading on these forums would indicate that it is a install disk rather than a retail version. The disk is grey and again I am assuming it is an intel install disk (don't know how to check).
Anyhow, in order to install Tiger onto the USB mini disk, I believe I need to boot up the from Tiger install disk and after the start chime begins hold down the 'C' button from some time until the Tiger install menu appears. My problem is that the Tiger install menu does not appear (tried this on several occasions) and it continues to boot up to Leopard.
Can someone please tell me if I am doing something wrong, or even what I am trying to do is able to be done. I think I have covered and put down all of the problems here ?
    Appreciate any advice

  • IBook wont boot up from Firewire Drive - it used to

I've been struggling with my G3 iBook for the last few weeks. It's a long story...
My initial problem started when the beachball started spinning and spinning for the smallest little thing. I would have a single program running but it would still keep spinning. I repaired disk permissions and ran MacJanitor. MacJanitor would take more than 40 minutes to complete running. It usually used to take less than 5 minutes.
I called the local Apple dealer (no Apple Stores here) and they suggested that I reinstall the OS. I reinstalled the OS, but that didn't result in any improvement. A few days later I got a warning from the HDD S.M.A.R.T. status saying that the internal HDD was failing.
I didn't have a backup of my internal HDD so I went out and got myself an external 3.5" Firewire HDD. I then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the internal drive to the HDD. Cloning itself took about 8 hours - I assume because of the problem with the internal HDD. I then went to the system preferences to make the external HDD as the startup disk. I then erased the internal HDD. My iBook was booting up and running at normal speed using the external Firewire HDD.
Last night I noticed the beachball spinning again. It was late so I shut down the iBook. When I tried to startup the iBook this morning , the Apple symbol came up on the screen, and a few minutes later a Circle with a slash symbol across it. The iBook would not boot up. I tried this a couple of times with no success.
I reinstalled the OS on the internal HDD - took about 3.5 hours. I am now working off the internal drive. When I plug in the Firewire drive it shows up on the desktop. When i go to system preference I can select the Firewire drive as the startup disk - BUT when I restart the iBook it does not boot up from the external Firewire HDD. I also noticed that I cannot access my documents, pictures, MP3's on my Firewire Drive when I look through the contents - Did I lose them, or just don't have priveleges??
I am not sure what the problem is and why the iBook refuses to boot up from the external firewire drive. The internal drive still shows the SMART status as failing, and I am not in a position to replace it right away. I need to be able to get my iBook to boot back up from the Firewire Drive.
    Please help
    Thanks
    Vir

I managed to get the problem sorted out.
I first started the iBook from the internal HDD and then went to System Preference to select the startup disk. I selected MAC OS 9 on the external HDD as the start up disk.
The iBook started up from the external Firewire drive using OS 9. OS 9 also showed that the iBook had not sut down properly the last time and verified the disk. Once I got the iBook started in OS 9 I went to the Control panel and then to Startup Disk. I noticed that I had 2 versions of OS X on the external Firewire HDD - one which said "OS 10.x.x previous system" and another which said OX 10.x.x. (When I select startup disk from OS 10.x.x it does not show both these options, only OS 10.x.x) I remembered that when I was reinstalling the OS (as recommended by the Apple Dealer) my settings etc were saved as "previous system". I seleected "OS 10.x.x " not "OS 10.x.x previous sytem" on the external HDD and re-started and it booted up ok.
My question here is - why does this additional startup option show up on OS 9 but not on OS 10? I figure that the iBook was trying to startup from OS "10.x.x. previous system" when it actually should have needed to startup from "OS 10.x.x.". This problem must have occured when I shut down ...
Is it ok to delete the OS X.x.x.previous system folder without losing any data etc??
    Thanks

I downloaded pictures onto my iPhone from computer twice by mistake now when i uncheck/sync then check and sync again  i keep getting two lots of pics..how can i get just the one set again? thnx

    You're welcome.
All photos transferred from your computer are stored in the iPhone's Photo Library regardless if you select a single album or folder of photos to be transferred or multiple albums or folders. The photos on the albums or folders of photos include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Photo Library. The photos are not duplicated taking up double the storage space. This way you can view the photos in an album or folder of photos only by selecting the album or folder, or all photos in all albums or folders by selecting Photo Library.
Makes more sense when transferring multiple albums or folders of photos which cannot be changed when transferring only a single album or folder of photos.
The same applies with iTunes and music playlists. A song can't be in a playlist unless it is in the main iTunes library. Placing a song in a playlist does not duplicate the song.

  • I think the DVD player reader on my Mac is going bad. Is there a way to copy the files off of an Apple Install DVD onto an external drive and then do theinstall from the external drive?

I think the DVD player reader on my Mac is going bad. Until I get it fixed Is there a way to copy the files off of an Apple Install DVD onto an external drive and then do theinstall from the external drive? It's ILife 11 if that makes a difference. Finder won't let me see the files to copy. I know - dumb question.
    Thanks.

Adding an SSD is not a simple endeavour like adding additional memory or adding another hard drive to a Mac Pro. That's probably why the option is only offered as an option at the time of purchase. Even if your Apple store was willing to install the necessary parts you will probably be paying for 1-2 hours of labor plus the cost of purchasing the necessary service parts (SSD, bracket, cables, etc) which I suspect will make the upgrade cost much higher than what it costs to add the SSD option when purchasing a new system.
I use my system for business and need it to work reliably.  Even though I'm fairly handy with tools I would not be willing to risk damaging my system and voiding my warranty by opening my system and removing the logic board and several other parts in order to squeeze in an SSD option and attach the appropriate cables and brackets. I'm also not prepared to deal with the hassles of explaining why my system has unauthorized parts installed in the event I experience issues and need to make use of my Apple warranty. My time is valuable, so I would probably investigate external storage options, or if I needed the speed of an SSD, I would consider selling my existing system and then purchase a new system configured with an SSD.
If you haven't already done so I suggest doing a search on 'iMac SSD installation' to see what's involved. It might help you understand why the SSD option is not offered post purchase.

  • Panther to Tiger using LaCie Firewire DVD drive

First, it was suggested I start a new topic, because of using an external Firewire drive. I have the proper Tiger "Retail" install disk. This is for a friends iMac that did not come with a DVD/Combo drive.
Anything anyone can suggest. I'm hoping the following will work:
    1. iMac has latest firmware, and is up to date with latest Panther.
    2. hook up LaCie external firewire DVD drive, and as long as it is recognized on the desktop of my friends iMac, that I will be able to then insert/load the Tiger Install Disk and double click on it to install Tiger onto the iMac.
    3. I additionally have the option of taking over my Intel dual-core MacBook (Leopard installed) and using that in Target Disk Mode with the Tiger disk in the combo drive of the MacBook. Will it then install on the iMac?
    4. I appreciate any and all suggestions and help. I read through numerous posts, but all the links for the Applelink article about installing using Target Disk Mode simply take me to the main page of Applelink and I can't seem to find the instructions.
    5. I'm just wondering anyone's experience in using an external Firewire DVD drive to use as the install disk for the OSX Tiger installation to an older iMac.
    thanks! Patrick.

Hi Patrick, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    1. Good.
    2. Should work if it's Mac compatable, you'll find out soon enough.
    3. Very likely.
    4. The iMac should see the MacBook's DVD as bootable when the MB is in Target Mode.
    5. It works with many FW Opticals, but a few do not support Mac Booting.
    6. Another option possibly, you can clone an image of the DVDs to a FW drive and boot from that for an install too... I've used Toast to do it, but it can be done with Disk Utility.
PS. I doubt you'll have problems with 2 ways to go there, good luck!

  • IBook doesnt boot anymore

    Servus alltogether,
I really have a BIG problem with my iBook here. I've installed the Screen Spanning Doctor in order to activate a second screen, and my iBook doesnt boot anymore. It gets to the point with the grey apple and the wheel, and then (using apple+v) there seems to be a problem by loading a file called dyld
    dyld:library not loaded: usr/lib/libz.1.dylb
    etc/rx line 262 55 trace / BPT trap couldnt find root user usr/sbin /update
I tried to reset nvram in open firmware without any sucess. I can log on in single user mode, but i dont know what i can do now from there.
It would be also very helpfun if soneone could tell me how to mount a external hard drive (I have a Lacie hard drive, perhaps I can rescue my data. Its still there, I checked it in single user mode.) or a usb-stick.
Perhaps it is also helpful when I tell you this: It is a G4 ibook, using the newest patch of mac os x tiger, and my graphic chip is a ati readon 9200 (which should work with the screen spanning doctor but apparently didnt).
I am really in trouble here, because I need this iBook for university. So please help me if you can.

Try starting up from a CD (Apple-C) or in safe mode: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
Either of these methods should get your booted. Then, back up your data! Next, try Disk Utility to fix your disk. You may have to reinstall the OS. Luckily, you have that backup now.

  • Can you install Tiger onto a drive with data?

    Hello,
I would like to ask if you can install Tiger onto a hard drive that already has data files on it. I have a 250 GIG hard drive and it already has 10 GIGs of data on it. Can I install Tiger on this drive or might it corrupt my files?
Its a long story but here is a quick summary of why I am attempting to do this:
I have a 350 MHz Blue and white G3 (rev 1) with two hard drives: the original 12 GIG ATA drive and a 250 GIG SATA drive (internal) connected with a 1S2 Seritek SATA controller.
My 250 GIG drive has two partitions but only one is available to Tiger. You see, by accident I originally formatted my 250 GIG drive with an extremely small partion (32 Megs). I meant to type "30 GIGs" and by accident I typed "30 Megs". Oops That was supposed to be my OSX 10.4 volume. Its too late now - its too small. So I only have two choices for a place for TIger: my 12 GIG drive or the other partition of my 250 GIG drive. I am reluctant to choose my 12 GIG drive because it already has an older OS on it (OS 8.6).
I was concerned about installing TIger on the data partition of the 250 GIG drive because that is where all my valuable data files are - 10 Gigs of data. I don't want to risk scrambling this data in any way.
Is it safe to install Tiger onto this partition with my data files? Or is the possibility it might do something to my data.
Its only a temporary install so that I could burn my 10 GIGs of data files to DVD for backup and then I will start all over again and erase the entire hard drive and reinstall from scratch onto the 250 GIG drive once my data files are safely backed up. (I will not partition the 250 GIG drive i nthe final install - it will be one big partition.)
    One other question:
When you format a disk in Tiger are there options to "low level format" or "zero all data" or will just a straight "erase" do the job sufficiently? I bought my 250 GIG Hitachi SATA drive new and so I am not sure if it worth the time to re-erase it with "zero all data" (if that is an option in the Tiger Disk Utility). What is the best formatting option to prepare this drive in the most beneficial for Tiger?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Thanks scb and Jeff,
Jeff, you have me thinking now. I think I will be safe and try another idea. I have a 4 GIG internal SCSI drive I could use to backup my data in 4 GIG sections at a time via my Adaptec 2430 SCSI card. I could then move this hard drive over to my other G3 onto its 40 GIG hard drive. This would be done three times to take off all my data and essentially provide a backup before I install Tiger. Good idea. You are right. It is better to play it safe.
By the way 8.6 can handle HFS+. And yes, I should eventually buy an external drive solution - probably an enclosure. I saw one called "coolmax" [1]. It could hold a SATA drive and it had USB, firewire and also an external SATA port.
And also Jef thanks for the info about formatting drives. I am glad to hear it is not important to zero all data if you don't have to. I am not concerned about havig anything to hide and so yes, I will just click "format" - that should be fine. Zero all data takes such a long time and I would rather avoid using it if I don't need this feature. Thanks for the advice.
Thanks for the new safer direction.
