Tiger OS and kernel panics

I just partitioned one of my internal drives and installed Tiger on my G4. I'm getting frequent kernel panics. Whether it's just sitting on the desktop idle or using an app. There's no pattern. All my firewire drives are updated to the latest drivers for Tiger.............. by the way they are all LaCie D2 drives. Spotlight is turned off on all drives. Does anyone have any suggestions other than that. It's not the ram because it works fine for the most part in OS 10.3.9. Anyone have any suggetions. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Jeff
By the way I'm a music pro using Digidesgn HD and Motu to name a few.

FJ has some good KP tips.

  • Hard Feezing and Kernel Panics - Early 11 MBP

Hey just wondering if anyone has any insight into this...
I've been experiencing hard freezing and kernel panics on my Early 11 Macbook Pro for several months.  The hard freezing only happens when I wake up my system from sleep.  I'll open the lid and when it happens, within seconds, everything locks up.  No spinning wheel, just frozen machine and I have to do a hard reboot.  I also get random kernel panics as well.
I took it in the the Genius Bar a few weeks ago, they ran tests and said the hardware was all fine and that I should reinstall Lion after a clean format.  Well I did that and still having issues.  Not sure if it's being caused by a 3rd party app...or if I really do have bad hardware after all.
When they did a diagnostic they said that 'soundflower' was showing up in my kernel panic log and that I should find what that is and delete it, so I did.  In my most recent and only kernel panic, shown below, I don't see any 3rd party language anywhere.
Anyone have an idea of what might be causing this?

Try either uninstalling Twitter or just don't use it. See if this stops the kernel panics.

  • Mac freezing and kernel panics

Please help if anyone can. I'm not much of a computer expert.
I apologize in advance if I'm not asking this question in the right forum or topic- I haven't ever posted before today.
I have a PowerMac G5 dual 2 GHz processor machine running 10.4.9. Lately I have had problems with freezing and kernel panics, especially at startup or soon after startup.
I have 1 GB RAM, 150 GB hard drive with 117 GB free space. I have no peripheral devices hooked to my computer- just an Apple USB mouse and keyboard that came with my computer.
Panics occur at startup usually, and require a restart using the power button.
Sometimes the system profiler shows that I have only 1 CPU.
I've run all the Apple hardware diagnostic stuff, Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, etc, and it comes up clean- no problems. I've run fsck -fy, and I've done a full erase and reinstall, then update to 10.4.9. Problem persists.
Sometimes I don't get the startup sound, and then everything freezes.
Sometimes it freezes on the blue screen and shows the prohibitory sign.
Sometimes when it freezes, the fans go wild and just keep increasing in speed until I force restart.
Recent kernel panic log reads as follows:

    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Based on that info, it sounds like either the optical or hard drive is beginning to go bad and perhaps the CPU on the logicboard. The fact it mentions iostorage, that typically deals with the storage devices on the computer. The fact that the CPU disappears is not good. Backup your data and try to replace the hard drive. See my FAQ* on backing up:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
A G5 takes SATA hard drives, and won't work with the Parallel ATA drives. SATA drives take the connectors shown here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA
The drive may still be under warranty even if the computer is not. Look on the sticky label on the outside of the drive.

  • Temp and kernel panic relation?

Is there a relationship between temperature and kernel panic?
I've spent the day restarting the computer trying everything I've found at apple discussions and support to fix the nonstop kernel panic restart requests.
After I Left the thing off for an hour - I gave up after my husband said my ranting caused Ga Tech to lose the Gator Bowl- I was able to get almost through the OS reinstall, which was about step number 45 in my restarts for the day.
so is this a temp problem? Is this chance or related to the cool down? Cannot wait for tomorrow to talk to someone at apple!

After you talk to them be sure to post back ...it may very well be related and if so indicates a hardware issue - meaning you may have to send it in for repairs.
When you mention it's a week old then I'm assuming it's a Core2Duo and not just a refurbished orig. Macbook.

  • CrashPlan and Kernel Panics

Ever since I updated to 10.7.4 I have been having problems with CrashPlan 3.2 and kernel panics. I use CrashPlan on a MacMini 3,1 w/ 2 GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 8 GB of memory. I have several external drives that contain a large collection of photos and home movies connected to the system. There is also a large external disk that I use as a local CrashPlan backup of other computers on my home lan. The system serves mostly as a backup and file server. There are a total of over 1 million files and over 1.3 TB of data that is backed up from this computer.
After the 10.7.4 upgrade I started getting regular kernel panics when the system was running only CrashPlan. The crash report usually indicated that java was the active process, pointing to CrashPlan as the culprit. To verify that 10.7.4 was the culprit I did clean installs of 10.7.3 and 10.7.4 on an external disk, installed CrashPlan on each of them, and alternately booted from them. I was able to run 10.7.3 for long periods of time (days/months) without crashes while 10.7.4 resulted in a crash, usually within an hour of enabling CrashPlan but never more than a day or so. The crashes seemed to correspond to CrashPlan having high levels of activity. I verified the file systems of all the external drives. In August I finally got around to updating to ML, and by then 10.8.1 was out. I did a clean install on an external drive, installed CrashPlan, crossed my fingers, and, to my disappointement, ..., crashes continued. It may just be my imagination, but I would say if anything the crashes happened sooner.
I had a several month running discussion with CrashPlan support, which by the way was very responsive and gave good suggestions. I tried many things including 32 bit Java instead of 64 bit. All of this was to no avail until this past week. It was suggested that I increase the limit on the memory. Instructions fro doing this are to edit /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.crashplan.engine.plist (need root permissions to do this), search for the line that contains -Xmx512m and increase 512 to something larger. It was suggested that I start with 1024, but since I have a lot of memory on the system I used 2048. Of course CrashPlan has to be stopped and restarted for this to take effect.
Perhaps I am being premature in writing this post, but the backup has been running for over 12 hours and seems to be working fine. I noticed that the java process is using 870 MB of real and 1 GB of virtual memory. So, this could explain why CrashPlan had trouble when it was limited to 512 MB of memory. I do not know why this was not a problem under 10.7.3. I did notice under 10.7.3 that CrashPlan reported using 650 MB of real memory for the same backup set. So, for some reason it uses more under 10.8.1. It may also be that 10.7.4 and 10.8.1 have stronger memory protection, but I am not sure. I am posting this information in the hopes that it will benefit someone else having similar problems.

  • Known issues with CUDA 5.0.17 and 5.0.24 driver (including crashes and kernel panics) on Mac OSX

We have recently learned of some issues with the new CUDA drivers from Nvidia that cause crashes and kernel panics in some circumstances, including when switching between applications that use the GPU.
    See this page for details.

You are experiencing a page fault (reference to an area outside of what is owned by the software in question) in the AirPort driver, in a Mac OS X kernel that does not have obvious third-party modifications to it.
This should not be happening. Your Mac OS X image may be Bad.
If you do not already have a Trusted Backup, that should be your Top Priority.
If this is a new MacBook, and it is within the first 90 days of ownership, contact telephone support and ask them to help you. They will likely suggest a re-Install, right over the Mac OS X you have in place now. This is intended to do no damage, but you should always have a Backup.

  • Known issues with CUDA 5.0.17 driver (including crashes and kernel panics) on Mac OSX

We have recently learned of some issues with the new CUDA drivers from Nvidia that cause crashes and kernel panics in some circumstances, including when switching between applications that use the GPU.
    See this page for details.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, email the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

  • Weird Video problem and kernel panic!

Okay, so last ngiht I was running tech tool maintenence, and I had repair on. So, it finished scanning my startup volume (I was on my eDrive) and then I shut down and restarted. Now, it tried to start from my startup volume (tiger 4.7, with latest updates) and it says you need to restart your computer (which means there is a kernel panic, am I right?) I try safe mode to no avail, I even reset the PMU and reset the PRAM (but I didnt hear the starup noise again). So, I put in my backup HD, and it starts up, but wait! Now the video is horribly wrong! It is all in TERRIBLE quality and in mostly only greys, I mean it looks like a 4 mb vram video card, there are very few pixels of color( there are some intermitedly) and there is terrible ghosting, and I can barely read anything. so, I checked my display, and universal access settings, and fooled around with those, and nothing happened. So, now I try and start from my eDriveand it start, but now it has the same horrible color problem as my other drive. Oh boy, this is a new computer, and I already have a kernel pnic, and a video problem, what can I do? Thanks for any help. Matthew. I have a sawtooth, a radeon 9200 flashed video card, and the latest tiger.

What if you tried running mplayer with the following command :
    mplayer -fs -zoom filename
As for the "too pixelish" problem well... you could try increasing the "nice" level (at least in VLC). For the other video players I don't know.

Since it references com.apple.iokit.IOFireWireFamily, I suspect that some FW device is causing the panic. Disconnect all of them and see if that stops the problem. As for general KP stuff, start with http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

  • Sending Mail and kernel panic

PLEASE PLEASE help me on this issue.
Since I updated to Leopard (which has been the biggest mistake so far) every time I try to send an e-mail (using Apple Mail 3.0) through my company's server I get a Kernel Panic issue in four languages and I have to restart my computer. The funny thing is that sending the e-mail through Gmail's server works fine.
I don't know what to do, but its driving me crazy.
I appreciate all the help I can get to solve this problem.

    Thank you for your post!
Here are some troubleshooting steps for you to follow that may help you attempt to rectify your problem.
    (1) Please ensure that you have ran all software updates: Apple, then Software Update, then install all updates that are shown. Once updates have been ran and you have rebooted, continue this process until it says no more updates are available at this time.
    (2) What happens when you log into your companies webmail and attempt to send a message on the same connection? Does the same issue occur? If so consult with your IT administrator and see if other Macintosh users are having a similar problem.
    (3) What happens when you attempt to send Mail in the activity pane? Click, (at top of screen) Window, then Activity pane before the panic occurs?
    (4) Try creating a new user in System Preferences, then Accounts. Once you're in System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon. Then click on the padlock, and authenticate with your Administrative password. Click on the "+" sign, then the drop down that says "standard", and change that to Administrator. In each field type the word "test", and then click create account. Close out of System Preferences, then log out of your user account (Apple icon, then log-out). Once you've done this launch mail in the test user and reconfigure it with only your work mail account. Does the same issue persist in the new user when attempting to send mail? If so boot to your install disc for Leopard and run Disk Utilities Disk First Aid- Repair Disk and then proceed to Archive and Reinstalling your operating system preserving user and network settings.
    Following this article is advised:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
    (5) If you're able to send Mail successfully in the new user log out of test and log back into your user account as you've isolated the issue to be user specific. Go to System Preferences and delete the test user account then once you're sure no application is open such as Mail open a Finder window and then navigate to your Home folder, then Library, then Mail. Click and drag the Mail folder to the desktop. Then click Preferences, and find and remove com.apple.mail.plist to the desktop as well. Log out and log back in. Relaunch mail and reconfigure your mail account for work. If you click on Mail, then Preferences, then Accounts, make sure only your work account is listed in an attempt to remove any other variables. If the Google one is still listed remove it. Then re-add your work account after confirming the outgoing mail address with your IT administrator and the correct port number in addition to whether or not SSL is required and what type of authentication is necessary. If this works, then trash the .plist and leave the Mail folder on your desktop in the event you need to revert to your old database for whatever reason for at least a week or so till you're sure the problem has been permanently resolved.
Some other ideas that I have include:
    * Are you hard wired via ethernet to your works network? Is there a wireless network that you can connect to via Airport disabling your ethernet connection? Attempt to send mail from that and see if the unit continues to kernel panic.
    * Make sure any peripheral devices connected to your computer are removed (you never know, unlikely yes, but to be safe I'd remove them).
    * If you upgraded from Tiger archiving and reinstalling preserving users and network settings may very well resolve your issue. Only do this after isolating that the problem is system wide across the OS.
    * Leopard may not be compatible with your network at work for whatever reason, archiving and downgrading back down to Tiger 10.4 is always an option as well. Just make sure to use your Tiger disc and run software updates after to ensure you're on 10.4.11.
Making sure you have a complete backup prior to archiving or making any system modifications is equally as important especially if it's your work machine.
    Hope this helps! :-D

  • 10.4.11 update and kernel panics

I've had Tiger installed on my old ibook for over a year and it's worked beautifully, but after finally getting dsl I upgraded to 10.4.11. About 5 minutes after rebooting I got a kernel panic, and could never again use it for more than 5 or 10 minutes without it panicking. I tried resetting the power manager and pram, and I noticed the startup disk wasn't selected, so I fixed that, but none of those things solved the problem. It did make it slightly more stable so that I had about 20 minutes before a kernel panic, so I tried reinstalling the update. It crashed just before finishing the installation, so I did a clean install of my original 10.1 disks, then found my Jaguar disks and upgraded to 10.2, then eventually upgraded to 10.4. No such luck - it still panicked, although it seemed for awhile that it was fine if my I disabled my airport card. Tonight though I took it to a genius and it panicked on startup with the airport card disabled. The genius tried installing the 4.11 update again, but once again it crashed just before it completed the install, so I brought it home and started over with a clean installation. Amazingly, it seems to work just fine with jaguar, but now I'm stuck using old applications. I ran the hardware tests and everything seemed just fine. I forgot to mention that I have 384mb of ram, with a third-party 256 card - could that have gone bad? I just can't understand why it will no longer run Tiger. Any insight would be very much appreciated!

shannonh already has the Tiger Install disk, evidently, since she updated to Tiger 10.4.11, which would only be possible if Tiger were already installed.
I haven't seen any more problems with the OS X 10.4.11 update than have happened in the past.
I haven't updated to 10.4.11 from 10.4.10 yet, but it's simply because I'm lazy, not because I'm scared of it. (I always back up at least my Home folder before updating. If you're nervous about it, a clone of the hard drive to an external FireWire drive will allow you to clone back to the iBook if something goes wrong.)
    Check out F.J.'s User Tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607543
I didn't go past Panther on my G3 iBook because I didn't want to install a system that could not run with just the logic board RAM.

  • Lockups, and Grey Screens, and Kernel Panics, Oh My!

Everything I am about to describe happened on my 15" 1.67Ghz Powerbook (1 gig of ram, 128MB VRAM).
While I was (Secure) emptying my trash earlier today, my computer locked up, spinning beach ball of death and everything. Just prior to that while it was still emptying the trash, I attempted to open a folder that I know had files in it, but the finder window claimed that there were 0 files there. Anywho since the entire system seized up I was forced to do a hard restart. When the computer came back to life, just after hearing "The Chord" I was treated to a black grey screen (Darker than the grey of Apple's "pinwheel Loading screen"). I left the computer for a while hoping it would fix itself with time. Sadly, it did not, and I was forced to do a hard restart again. This time after waiting on the grey screen for about 5-10 minutes it displayed a folder icon in the center with a logo on it that switched between the "Finder Face" and a question mark. I tried to boot from my install disc only to have it cause a Kernel Panic just as it would give me hope by loading the "Apple Pinwheel loading screen" sans the pinwheel. Since then I have cleared my PRAM, NVRAM, PMU, Tried to boot into safe mode, held X to try to force it to load OS X, and various other things, all to no avail, and now, to add insult to injury, the Install disc refuses to eject, choosing to make a knocking sound instead. So every time I restart it attempts to start up, then it attempts to load the DVD and I get another beautiful Kernel Panic. It's a vicious cycle.
So, what do you say, can you help me? This laptop has my life on it. And although I backup, not everything was saved before the crash (The first of the month is my backup/cleanup day), and there is a lot to lose if I lose my computer, so I need help here.
Please help me, you're my only hope...until AppleCare comes back from vacation.
    Thank you for your time.
    -Nick

    foxymcfox:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Sometimes having too many items, or just too much in the Trash as you try to empty Trash can lead to the spinning beachball as the computer tries to figure out what to do.
The flashing ? alternating folder indicates that the computer cannot find a bootable volume.
I suggest that you begin with Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please do post back with an update and/or with further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • Cinema display causing freezes and kernel panics?

Okay, if anyone has experienced this before I would like to know. I've been having these powerbook freezes at night., and occasional kernel panics during the day. I usualy leave my computer on all night, but when I check it in the morning it's pretty much froze everyday.
I did a complete clean install, I've ran hardware test, past both tests, reset pram, av-ram. I did install 2 gig of ram (2x1), I was beggining to question the ram, but once I unpluged it from my Cinema display I have not had one freeze in three days. Why would that be? Has anyone else had problems like this?
I've used this display for a year with my previous powerbook and have had no problems, but for some reason these two don't get along. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the usb, or firewire ports. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

You know it does seem to be the memory. Once I replaced the memory with different chips all kernel panics have stopped, same with freezes. Funny how this passed all the memory tests.
All seems to be better now anyway....thanks.

  • Macbook pro 2009 unibody with white screen and kernel panics

I upgrade to Lion a month or two ago and things have been working fine. A few days ago, I try to wake my computer from sleep and it freezes on a white screen. I reboot only to continue to find the white screen. I hear the chime every time on boot. From then on, I am having different responses on startup.
Initially I could boot to single user mode no problem, but would continue to get white screen on regular boot. I tried to reinstall lion, and on restart midway through install I got the half-gray "you need to restart" kernel panic screen.
Yesterday at apple store, it would not boot to single user, OS select, verbose, etc. modes. They told me it was logic board or hard drive.
Bough a SSD, successfully installed Snow Leopard, and then continued to have similar kernel panics.
Now, replaced originaly harddrive and successfully reinstalled Lion, although got a kernel panic on the halfway reboot (log posted below). Install finished, and now up and running for about an hour. Decided to reboot to check, and big surprise, one more kernel panic. (2nd log posted below).
Is this a logic board? Seems like the HD is not the problem since same issue with a SSD.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated, apply was very unhelpful (I am out of warranty, no applecare). Thanks

    Run the Apple Hardware Test:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer.  After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears.  Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours.  If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error
Cannot guarantee that it will reveal anything. As for using the other GPU all I say is you can try switching to it in Energy Saver preferences.

  • One month old macbook pro got hang(freeze) once, and kernel panic once: should i need to take some actions or its ok??

my macbook pro 13.3 (OS XLion 10.7.4) is one month old, few days ago  it got freezed(hanged) at that time only 2 apps were running google chrome and xcode, i pressed power button (hold it for few seconds) to restrat.
Today when i opened the lid(as my mac was on sleep for last one hour- no apps except finder was running) i saw an error like this "mac encountered an error hold your power button for few seconds to restart......blah blah..something in other languages too", i think some where it used the word "kernel panic".
After restart mac said "your computer restarted because of a reason", below i have copy pasted the reason.
Please suggest me its(this behavior is) okie or should i take it to apple center?, also to note i have never played any game on my mac. Can any body suggest me why this kernel panic happened by seeing the reason below.
Now i am afraid to leave my mac at sleep with unsaved data and that was the exact reason i shifted from windows to mac.
