    iCal using Tiger/Panther Help?
I’m sure this is a stupid question but I’m trying to import my iCal info from home to work and back. I have Tiger at home and Panther at work, is there a simple way to import and export and update? I’ve tried thought email and had know luck, it comes thought as raw text. I’m sure there a simple way to do this! Thanks Scott F.

    Henry,
Click on your selected calendar, then Click the Info button on the lower right side of the iCal Window, and the window which opens will allow you to change the color in the color window drop down menu which is located in the upper right hand corner of the Info Window.
Just drag them to change the order.

  • Tiger/Panther install problems - won't boot from Tiger DVD or Panther CD

    My Mum has an iMac G3 CRT, running at 500MHz, with 1GB RAM, a 20GB HD, & a slot-loading internal CD-RW.
The iMac in question is the model described here: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac500indigo.html
She only uses the machine for email & web browsing, but because it runs OS 9, it won't run a modern web browser (it's stuck on Internet Explorer 5.1.7) so lots of websites don't load properly or work at all. This is fair enough as IE for the Mac hasn't been updated since 2001.
My idea was to upgrade the machine from OS 9.2.2 to (ideally) 10.4.11, or failing that, 10.3.9, which would then let her use the current version of Safari, or possibly even Firefox. (Any thoughts on which would be easier for a currently IE-using technically-challenged pensioner would be welcome, although I prefer Safari myself, despite its shortcomings).
The iMac only had it's original 128MB of RAM until recently, but I persuaded her that it would be a good idea to spend 70-odd Pounds on 1GB of RAM so that OS X could not only be installed (which would let a modern browser be used) but would run at a useable speed. The minimum requirement for Panther is 128MB of RAM, but I suspected that it would run like treacle on a 128MB G3, and I was hoping to go for Tiger anyway, which requires 256MB.
As Tiger comes on a DVD (I have the retail/generic version) and the iMac has no DVD drive, I borrowed a friends external LaCie FireWire DVD-RW drive (the Porsche styled one). The DVD mounted first time, and the Startup Disk control panel let me select it.
When I restarted, I got the initial OS X pale grey screen with the dark grey Apple logo in the centre, with the spinning circle thing below, but after a minute or so, I could hear the DVD stop spinning in the drive, and a few seconds later the dark grey Apple logo changed into a dark grey "circle with a line through it" logo, with the normal circle thing still spinning below. This is how things stayed for many minutes, so I just restarted with the external drive off, and eventually got back to a normal 9.2.2 boot-up.
Next I tried running the "Mac OS X Install" application on the Tiger DVD from within 9.2.2. This started and came up with a big Tiger logo screen with a button labelled "Restart". Clicking it brought up an OS 9 error dialogue though, which said something along the lines of "the Tiger DVD cannot be selected as the startup disk" with a number 2 in brackets at the end of the error message - like this: (2)
This error occurs both if I select the Tiger DVD in the Startup Disk control panel prior to running the "Mac OS X Install" application, or if I select the internal hard disk. I know the DVD isn't faulty, as I used it to successfully boot my own Mac (a Power Mac G4 Mirror Drive Doors) just the other day, in order to repair permissions on the startup disk.
At this point I gave up on Tiger and tried to use the first of 3 Panther CDs that I have. These 3 CDs are burnt copies that came with my own Mac and contain version 10.3.2.
The CD refused to be selectable in the Startup Disk control panel. It's icon was greyed out, and so I couldn't boot from it. I tried running the "Install Mac OS X" application on the CD from within OS 9, but got the same error with the 2 in brackets when I clicked the "Restart" button, just like with the Tiger DVD.
Initially, I suspected that these Panther discs might be machine-specific, rather than the retail/generic version, because of the first CD being greyed-out in the Startup Disk control panel, but then the error dialogue that matched the one I got when I tried the Tiger DVD makes me think that my Panther CDs might be generic after all. Examining the first CD on my own Mac, it appears to be generic, but I'm not 100% sure, as the CDs are copies and as such don't have the usual identifying information on the labels. There are no machine-specific files that I can find on the first CD, which is dated January 9th 2004.
Various websites mention that when Tiger was current, Apple would swap a retail copy of the DVD for a set of CDs. I've looked on eBay but not been able to find any. This doesn't surprise me though, as there will be very few copies of Tiger on CD out there, and even fewer copies that people would want to sell.
There are a few retail copies of Panther available on CD, but if my current burnt copies of these discs are in fact generic, then buying a new set would make no difference. Besides, I'd prefer to use Tiger.
The Tiger minimum requirements (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514) say:
"To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs: DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation"
What it doesn't say though, is whether the DVD drive has to be an internal one with Apple firmware/modifications, or whether an external 3rd party one will do. However, I know from various websites that it's possible to load Tiger onto this sort of Mac, and sometimes even older non-FireWire Macs, despite what the minimum system requirements say.
If anyone has any suggestions I'd be much obliged!
    Thanks.

The problem is now solved, but I'm not sure how I managed it, unfortunately.
Having read the article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75430, I checked both my Tiger DVD and my first Panther CD, and neither had the firmware updater on them, despite what the article said, so I downloaded it. However I was sure I'd applied a firmware update to the iMac a long time ago, and the 4.1.9 version number seemed familiar.
When I checked, I had in fact already applied the firmware update a few years ago!
I tried running the "Mac OS X Install" application on the Tiger DVD from within 9.2.2 again, and got the same error message as before. I was wrong about the error code though. It was minus 2 in brackets, not 2 in brackets.
The full text of the error message is:
    An error occurred.
"Startup Disk was unable to select the
install CD as the startup disk. (-2)"
I tried selecting the DVD manually in the Startup Disk control panel (as before) and running the application again gave the same error message (also as before).
I then went into Extensions Manager to see if there was anything there that might be interfering with things. The only thing that caught my eye was the LaCie SilverLining control panel (which I think was version 6.4.5a). This was something that originally came on a floppy disk accompanying an external hard drive that I used to use years ago at a place I worked, and I used to find it invaluable back in the OS 9 G1 Power Mac magneto-optical external drive days!
I couldn't remember what it was doing on the iMac, but I switched it off, and then clicked "Restart", hoping that when I rebooted (in OS 9) the error message wouldn't come up when I ran the "Mac OS X Install" application.
However, I'd forgotten that I'd switched the Startup Disk control panel to the DVD, so when the iMac restarted, the initial OS X dark grey Apple logo screen appeared, and I expected the dark grey "circle with a line through it" logo to appear shortly afterwards, but it didn't! The iMac booted up from the DVD, which then let me install Tiger! I was then able to apply the 10.4.11 update, plus all the others that Software Update provided. About half a dozen restarts and several hours later, the iMac is now fully updated & configured, favourites are copied over to Safari 3.1.2, and all I have to do is teach my Mum how to use the OS X Finder, Mail & Safari, as opposed to the OS 9 Finder, Outlook Express & Internet Explorer...
Switching off the SilverLining control panel seemed to do the trick, but since the iMac then rebooted from the DVD, not the internal hard disk, I don't see how it could have possibly had any bearing on things! Very weird!
Anyway, thanks to Allan Jones & spudnuty for their advice. All's well that ends well!

  • Tiger-Installation possible with grey Installationdiscs?

    Hello everybody,
is it possible to install Tiger on a 14" G4 iBook, "Panther", 1,3Ghz with the grey Installationdiscs of a machine with same specification? They are quite cheap on ebay..., or is at least the black upgrade-DVD necessary?
    Thanks for help!
    Greetings from Berlin

The 14" 1.33GHz iBook came with OS 10.3.5 pre-installed, so I don't believe that the eBay grey Tiger install disc can be from a Mac with the same specification as yours.
You will need a retail Tiger DVD install disc. But, Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A and M9639Z/A . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray).

  • Mail Crashes-Tiger & Panther-must I resort to Entourage (Microsoft-Blah)?!?

I have been a Mac user for 6 years now. In my home we have 3 G4's (eMac, PowerBook & Power Mac) and a G5 on the way. I just bought my Mom, a diehard Windows user until now, a Mac Mini running Tiger 10.4.5. She has had problems with Mail crashing since the first day she got it. She will try to delete certain Junk mail and it crashes. A few times Mail would totally restart from the beginning and I would have to set it up just like the first time it was opened. Loses all e mails in all mailboxes.
Now my wife, who has an eMac G4 running Panther is having similar issues. When deleting e mails the program will simply crash. Then upon restarting Mail it will go back and re-download duplicate messages from the server since it did not get to complete downloading when it crashed. But, as I try to go back to delete the duplicate and junk mail it crashes again. A vicious cycle.
I see so many posts with Mail issues. I thought it was related to Tiger only but it seems that Panther has problems with Mail now as well.
What gives Apple?? Do I need to start using Entourage? Too bad Outlook doesn't run in OS X!! I hate with a passion to have to use a Microsoft program because my Apple programs aren't cutting it.
    Peter Mallamo

    Peter,
First of all, I have had no crashes, and I know and communicate with many of the contributors to these discussions (those helping vs needing help), and none of us experience these crashes.
With 10.4, problems often come from issues with conversion of mailboxes originating in earlier version of Mail and OSX -- I have not thought that is the case for your mother?
Also with 10.4, it seems to me that for some people the updates have flaws in the installation -- whether this is due to the large size of some updates, and flawed downloads, or from poor practices during the installation of the update, I do not know.
Have you been able to check that the version of Mail is what it should be?
Leaving aside font issues, I think Mail in Panther often encounters problems from mailboxes being Overstuffed, when in long use, and messages with large attachments -- does total individual mailbox size exceeding 500 MB, and approaching 1 GB apply to any of you wife's mailboxes -- Inbox, Sent, other? Are any applications, other than Mail experiencing abnormal behavior?
Can you think of any other info, that might be unique to either your mother or your wife's Macs?

  • Tiger + Vista Possible? Vanguard SoH.

I want to play the game Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. However, it requires Windows. I have Vista Home Premium installation disc. Is it possible to run Windows Vista and Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger on my Intel iMac with Tiger installed currently?
I don't really want to upgrade to Leopard yet, because last time I did it was really buggy, with freezing etc.
    Thanks!

You need to install either Parallels or VMware Fusion.

  • Help! - Can't re-install Tiger, Panther etc.. Just won't start up -

I have erase my hard drive and tried to re-install Tiger. It successfully installed the 1st time, but every time I tried update, software update quit, and then safari quit when i tried to download the updates manually. Shortly afterwards the Powerbook froze.
I have tried to reinstall Tiger - then Panther from my original system disks - The hardware test says all is fine. The drive shows to install - but can't find a drive following installation.
    Any ideas?

RAM failure can lead to kernel panics, unexpected quits, more spinning beachballs than you would expect for specific kinds of processes, and it can potentially cause problems with software installation. Note, if a hardware test reveals bad RAM you can believe it. You can't though believe a hardware test when it says the RAM is healthy, as bad bits can't all be tested in the known age of the universe.

  • Install failure: Tiger & Panther & Jaguar

I have 400 MHz Power Book with 384 MB of memory & a 10GB drive. (CPU Type: PowerPC 750(42.2)) It was running under OSX 10.3.9 successfully when it started to slow up terribly. So I decided to clean it out and try to upgrade to Tiger. Backed-up the hard drive and did an erase-&-install of Tiger. I'd get an "Installation was unsuccessful. Please re-install message." And again. And again. So I tried to erase-&-install Panther. Same message. Tried one or twice again, this time not erasing, but accepting the default "Upgrade" option. Finally it worked, it seemed. Tried to update to 10.3.9. Disk image failed to open, so I opened it on my desktop machine and network-transferred the update install file to the laptop to install. That seemed to work, but some apps refused to open; iTunes, Mail, . . . Tried to install Jaguar; same failure message. Kept trying till it seemed to succeed. Update to 10.2.8 failed. . . . Tried various other things, including DiskWarrior, TechTool, AppleJack, PowerBook hardware test disk. No problems found.
I've currently got it running under 10.3. (There are a bunch of files and folders with (Mac OS 9) as part of their names. These, plus an AppleJack dmg and a ComboUpdate 10.3.9 --all under the root directory-- seem to be left over from an earlier install, even through at least one erase-&-install.)
Oh, yes. The battery has been dead for a long time. If that matters.
    Any good ideas, anyone?

If you do an Erase and Install then there cannot be anything "leftover" from a previous installation.
Is this a Pismo or later model or a Lombard? Lombard's cannot run Tiger. Tiger requires a computer with built-in Firewire and USB ports.
I suggest you may want to do an extended hard drive format:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation.
A dead battery should not be a problem as long as you have the AC adapter connected for power. However, none of the settings normally preserved in PRAM will be saved whenever AC power is removed or the computer is shut down. This could lead to odd behavior because the date and time, display information, selected boot volume, etc. are stored in PRAM.

  • Would like a link to the Technologies boards from the Tiger & Panther board

It would be nice if the headers of:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=161
    and
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=177
included the links on the header of
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=162

    Hi ab!
As the Mac OS X Technologies link, is directly below the Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, and the Mac OS X v 10.3 Panther & earlier links on the Discussions Start Page, wouldn't that be redundant?
    Respectfully,

  • Conflict synching RSS bookmarks between Tiger & Panther?

I recently purchased a new PowerBook and I am continuing to sync my bookmarks via .Mac with my iMac.
The iMac still has Panther and the Powerbook shipped with Tiger.
When I open RSS bookmarks from the Powerbook on the iMac, I get a blank window which then keeps reopening when I try to close it. It's almost like popup window behavior. This contrasts with the display of the RSS feed text which you would get if you tried to open an RSS page directly in Safari 1.3.1 under Panther.
I often open collections of bookmarks in tabs, and this misbehavior interferes with any tabbed viewing of a bookmark collection which includes some RSS feeds.
Has anyone else run into this? Do you have any suggestions for fixing it, other than not mixing those links into collections which will be viewed in tabbed browsing?

I give up. There is simply an unresolved compatibilty. Maybe they can fix this with a maintainance update of Safari for Panther.

  • Tiger, Panther, powerbook, mac mini & iPod problem...

Is it possible to connect my Powerbook (running on 10.3.9) to my Mac Mini (10.4.1), so they can swap files and/or connect to the internet?
    Here's the story:
I just bought a new ipod classic.
It only runs on my mac mini... however my mac mini isn't connected to the internet.
(not wireless and only hard line is already taken)
My laptop is wireless and has internet access.
I want to transfer the pictures and movies I've downloaded on my powerbook to the mac mini, and/or use the powerbook's wireless connection to get online with the mac mini.
But I don't know how or if it's even possible as they're on two different operating systems...
    Does anyone know?
    Thanks!

  • Leopard, Tiger, Panther, Calico, Alleycat - what are the numbers?

I'm getting so frustrated by references to these made up names when all I want is to understand something in a specific OS.
"About This Mac" talks in Version numbers.
Everywhere else the references are to cat names.
    I got a G4 running OS 10.3.9
And I got a Mac Pro running OS 10.4.11
How about making this consistent and simple?

This is why the gods invented google. It is perfectly consistent and simple.
Just look at your install CD or DVD or your manual.
I won't get into G4, G5, MBP, Santa Rosa, Aluminum, etc.
Then there is quartz, cocoa, coffee, Aqua and on and on.
    A simple google turns up:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacOSX
    That's a good start.
But just remember your best friend is google for stuff like this.
It's not frustrating at all, in fact it's fun, like car models and airplane types.

    Hi Rickety
My best guess is that you have some application which runs a daemon in the background, and which is not compatible with Tiger. Possible suspects are Virex, Norton AV 9, Norton Utilities, ermm, Cisco VPN.
Check your third party applications for Tiger compatibility. Please report back: I've had a lot of people not reply lately, and so I do not know whether my suggestions have helped, or whether there is further help needed with the problem.

  • Possible to connect MacPro to os9.2 on G3 (BW G3-400) ?

I just spent 1.5 hours on the phone with Apple support trying to network my old G3 with my new MacPro. Why was it so difficult? I don't know...but it may have something to do with the techs not being born when the G3 came out ;0) The final word from the second tech —who spent most of his time checking documents online vs. actual knowledge: "We consider os9 an obsolete os and no longer support it."
My aim is to have a mounted os9 HD/Desktop on my MacPro so that I can copy files. What I have now is the G3 booted up in OS 10.3.9—the latest system it can run—and I'm able to share ONLY the items in OSx, with the exception of the os9 Applications folder. I cannot access the G3's OS9 desktop from the MacPro. Of course the os9 classic desktop is easily available from the G3's os10 desktop.
What's frustrating is that from the MacPro, I can even SEE the os9 desktop alias, it just won't connect:
    Users
    System Folder
    System
    Library
    Image
    FONTS
    Documents
    Desktop (Mac OS 9)
    Applications (Mac OS 9)
    Applications
When I click the Desktop (Mac OS 9) icon, it just gives info. When I try to fix the alias, it can't find the os9 desktop, no matter where i look.
I CAN access the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder though and get get files out of it. (I made an alias of the os9 HD and put it in the Apps folder and have a temp. solution) Why can't I share the os9 desktop?
On my old computer: I still have programs I like to use in os9 and can't afford to update all of them. I like to keep my G3 booted in os9 because these apps work too slowly when using Classic out of osX. I know its possible to share the os9 desktop from a MacPro because at work, we have a scan station running os9 that we can share on our osX network, but know one can tell me how.

It's possible this document will help you: Mac OS- How to Connect to File Sharing or Apple File Services (AFP). With Panther running also see, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger- 'Connection failed' error when connecting to an AFP server.
In the long run, however, either update the OS on this G3 to Tiger if possible or replace it.

  • Data from Tiger to Leopard

So I just managed to install Leopard on my MacBook. It required erasing everything first, so I backed up all of my documents and Tiger apps on my 500 GB Lacie Drive. Now I'm wondering what to keep. Some things are obsolete (they come with Leopard or are combined in an application on Leopard). I was surprised to find that my copy of Microsoft Office 2004 actually transferred but all of my documents are not formatted for word. I need to get them oriented with word again. I'm wondering what the best way to do this.
Some files also seemed to double or tripled themselves as well which kind of *****. My biggest general question is what i should keep to have everything I had (or the equivalent) with Tiger. I don't have the $ to buy the new iLife so I want to preserve as many applications from Tiger as possible.
The last issue is that I started with about 34 GB of space taken up on the Tiger HD. Now, after installing Leopard and the weird case of doubling backed up data, I have 58 GB of used space with Leopard and only 15 GB of free space. Any hints about how to trim this down would be dandy.
Sorry for the broadness of this post, but I have a lot to deal with as I try to rebuild my Mac and any info you can throw my way would be great. (This is the only support I can afford!)
    Thanks!

I would not focus on keeping programs. Just reinstall those. I would keep my data:
    safari bookmark file
    mailboxes
    address book file
    music files
    imove and idvd file
any office files you created in word, excel or powerpoint.
