Tiger/printer setup utility

How do you get the updated "printer setup Utility" from tiger??Having a herendous problem getting my Epson R1800 with firewire to show up in the setup utility, though it shows up in the Epson printer utility. Could it be a bad firewire cable? As I do not see anything under firewire in the system profiler or under Printer? My printer is unusable?

Have you selected the "More Printers" button within the Print Setup Utility? Epson has it's own USB printing compatibility section within the top pull down menu. It also has a Epson FireWire printer selection.

  • Printer Setup Utility missing

I just installed Tiger on a G4 1.42 dual Power Mac w/ 1.5 gigs RAM and then updated it to 10.4 via software update and went to setup my Epson Stylus Photo 2200 and noticed that my Printer Setup Utility is missing.
    Yikes.
I just downloaded the latest driver from Epson -- and now it shows up as a beta even though it is dated from 2004.
I had a friend send me a copy of Printer Setup Utility from his Tiger 10.4 and it works, but to a point .... It does not correctly name my printer and will not finish any job I send to it.
    How can I fix this?

I suggest you reinstall OS X.

  • Printer Setup utility freezing

We are having a problem on 3 machines, with the printer setup utility freezing when a user logs in. it obviously effects microsoft office products etc. I have read the other posts and checked that users can manage printers but this is still happening. - the client machines are running 10.3.9, to a tiger 10.45 server.
The only difference between the machines is, that the ones with a problem have had the interactive smartboard software installed.
    Any help would be appreciated!!
    Thanks!

I have the epson R800 showing up in the printer list and everything looks fine.....click print and nothing prints......no error message. it seems to trigger the print utility on the G5 to stop jobs but I can start jobs again-just can't print from laptop .

  • 'Printer setup utility' problem...please help me.

Hi all, running tiger 10.4.11, trying to connect an Epson DA4050 printer.
It's not showing when I try to 'add printer' in systems prefs, so have attempted to open Printer Setup Utility and I get the message - 'The item cannot be opened. It may be disabled or not installed'.
Sure enough its not showing up in the utilities folder, so I'm assuming this is the problem. How can I install just this without reinstalling the whole system?
Any help gratefully received - thanks.

If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

If I cant install printers, then I cant use 10.5. This is a production machine at a print shop. Any ideas?

That's the way I have always set up my printers. I did not even know there was another way. Well, now there isn't anymore.
I just found that app on my Tiger. Never noticed it, never used it.
Interesting. I guess it was simply a matter of removing duplication.
I can only assume Leopard forgot to delete it in this case, or somehow it got installed after Leopard was installed.

  • Printer Setup Utility Add Button NOT working

Whenever I press the ADD button in the printer setup utility, nothing happens. The butten darkens as I press it but, no dialog box appears to add a new printer. The system console shows the following:
    2006-06-20 15:32:47.850 Printer Setup Utility[531] * -[FireWireBrowser startBrowsing]: selector not recognized [self = 0x594b0d0]
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Try downloading Pacifist http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6812 and put in your Tiger Install DVD. Then click "Open Apple Install Packages" (which will only work if you put in the install DVD). Then search the folders for Printer Setup Utility and click Install. I believe it is in one of the top folders. You may have to go a little deep, but it isn't too hard to find. Good luck!

  • Printer setup utility crashes

I am running 10.4.8 on my iMac G5. Up until a few days ago I was successfully using two network printers that I have in my home. One is HP Photosmart 3310. Suddenly it stopped working, and I uninstalled and reinstalled and updated the software and drivers countless times. I kept getting a "printer not supported" message. Now when I try to install ANY printer I get the following message midway through the process in printer setup utility:
The application printer setup utility quit unexpectedly.
Mac OS X and other applications are not affected
Click reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
    Can somebody help me please??

I think you left out some details-
The Photosmart 3310 is a USB printer, so to make it a network printer you are sharing it? From a Mac?
Here are some generic troubleshooting steps to try:
    Repair permissions (Disk Utility).
Delete Print Prefs - search for (File>Find) files that start with com.apple.print and delete them all and reboot.
Reset Printing System (new in Tiger) - In Printer Setup, click this menu item found just above Quit Printer Setup.
If there is a downloadable Combination Updater from Apple, use it to re-Update OS X.
Try Printer Setup Repair from www.fixamac.net.
Use a Disk Utility like Disk Warrior to repair the HD, or start from the Install DVD to use Disk Utility to repair the hard drive.

  • No Printer Setup Utility

Somehow I've accidentally deleted, or otherwise lost the printer setup utility that should be in my utilities folder. There is a file called Printer Setup Utility in the Utilities folder, but it's only 650KB, which tells me that's not it. There's also a strange icon representing it (two pieces of paper, a paintbrush, a pen [looks like an Appleworks icon or something]). Basically, I have no print center. Is there away of reinstalling this application without having to reinstall Tiger completely? I've reinstalled the printer drivers with the custom install option, but I can't figure out a way to install the actually printer setup utility application. Any help would be great.

I think this will do the trick:
    Restoring Lost OS X Files
If you erase or otherwise "lose" an OS X system application or utility (such as Mail or Disk Utility, for example) you can restore them without having to reinstall OS X.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Read the documentation. Use Pacifist to extract a fresh copy of the missing application from the file archives on your OS X Installer disc. The file archives are usually found on the installer disc in the /System/Installations/ folder.
After restoring the application you need to reinstall the OS X Combo Updater for the version of OS X you currently have installed. This assures the new copy of the application is updated to the current version.
Lastly, it's a good idea to repair permissions.

  • How to make "Utility" button in Printer Setup Utility available

There, i add a printer in the Printer Setup Utility and select it. i want to open printer utility, but the "Utility"
button in Printer Setup Utility is dimmed. In addition,
"Printer\Configure printer" in the Printer Setup Utility menu is also dimmed.
How to make "Utility" button in Printer Setup Utility available?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jiong,
That button is to acess the printer utility for that particular printer, not all printers come with a utility. If you have the disk that came with your printer, you can see if it has a Macintosh driver, if it does then it mimght have the utility with it. It's pretty hard to run the utility on its own, its burried somewhere in the system so that's why you have that menu item. You can alternatively go on the internet and download the latest driver, which might have a utility. All the utility will do will give you options to check nozzle patterns, alighnement, ink tank levels, and cleaning options - just mimnor maintenence junk, non-essentials, etc. I think Tiger just comes with a whole heap of generic drivers for different printer lines, can't say for sure.
I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you have a relatively old printer.
    Hope that helps

  • Yet another freaky printing problem: 10.3.8 and Printer Setup Utility

I'm hoping some really smart people can help me out here -- I'm not as good at Mac troubleshooting as I need to be!
I purchased Tiger a few weeks ago and the upgrade went fine and I was able to print, but then suddenly I can't any more. I have a PowerBook G4, running 10.3.8 and a HP 2710xi, which is a wireless printer (not sure of the proper term for this).
The symptoms: iCal crashes when I hit cmd-P. Other programs also crash upon printing. Some programs will bring up the print dialog, but it freezes up at that point. I tried printing to a PDF in Microsoft Word, and that crashed it. This problem persists in other user accounts.
Additional problem: Printer Setup Utility crashes whenever I hit the "add" button to add a printer. I have the crash reporter information if anyone wants it. Can't add any printer at this point.
What I've tried: I uninstalled the old software from HP and reinstalled new software. The HP installer can't finish running since it gets hung up by the Printer Setup Utility. I installed print-only drivers from HP. Same problem. I tried plugging the printer in to the USB to see if that makes a difference. Same problem.
Printer Setup Utility is recognizing my printer in all forms: as USB, Bonjour, and HP IP Printing. I just can't add it due to the program crashing.
Further troubleshooting: I ran all the maintenance and permissions repairs in Onyx. I used most of the diagnostic and repair tools in Printer Setup Repair, including Reset the printing system and deleting printer preferences. I reinstalled the 10.3.8 update from Apple's website.
I'm not sure what my next step should be: Do I reinstall the whole operating system? From my review of this board, lots of other people are having problems with Printer Setup Utility in Tiger.
Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   HP Photosmart 2710xi

Have you tried starting up with the Install DVD, and then using Disk Utility (in the menus at the top, NOT in the installer) to repair the hard drive?
If you're going to show us any errors, use the Console to look at cups error log. Paste any line that starts with E, plus the 3 lines before it (they tell you what was happening).
If none of this is fruitful, yes, reinstalling is the next step.

  • Print Setup Utility Keeps Quitting

I reinstalled Tiger because my system would shut off instead of go to sleep whenever I left it for any extended period of time. So I thought there was a problem with the operating system (maybe) and reinstalled. Now I cannot get into Print Setup Utility.
Every time I go into Preferences/Print and Fax and click on add printer, the application "unexpectedly quits"...this happens every single time and I can't figure out why it keeps doing that.
Anybody know where I should look to fix this problem? Thanks

A basic rule in troubleshooting is - first, go back and fix/analyze what you've most recently changed...
I suggest you reinstall OS X using the Archive & Install option in the installer.

  • Printer Setup Utility always crashes- and am getting weird printer behavior

Just installed 10.5 on a fresh internal drive- machine is G5 2X2- settings imported from a 10.4 installation on another drive. Printer is a Brother HL-5170DN
    If I try to print from any app, the app doesn't crash, as has been reported by others, but the printer behavior is strange. I added the printer from the Print and Fax control pane, which saw the printer and appeared to be happy. But when I try to print any test document, the printer starts printing an error message on every sheet in its tray, literally running through the whole stack and then complaining it's out of paper, even though the document to be printed was only one page. Have never seen anything like that. The error message printed on paper is: ERROR NAME; undefined COMMAND; y OPERAND STACK;
Cannot launch Printer Setup Utility- always crashes. Have tried reseting printer system and rebooting, but no luck. It seems to be complaining that a file called "_CPLPPDGetFileInfo" is missing. The error log when I try to launch Printer Setup Utility is:

Thanks for the helpful info. I had upgraded to Leopard using Archive & Install and had an alias to the Printer Setup Utility from Tiger, which I kept trying to use not realizing that this now pointed to the old version in the Previous Systems folder.
Now I've deleted the whole thing and will remember to use the System Preference panel to configure my printers.

  • Choosing Epson tcp/ip crashes Printer Setup Utility

When I try to add a printer using the Printer Setup Utility, if I click "More Printers..." and try to select Epson TCP/IP, Printer Setup Utility quits out. (I have already downloaded and installed both Epson drivers from their site, as well as reinstalled the Apple Epson drivers from the Tiger Install DVD. I spoke with Epson about this, they also advised repairing permissions, and removing the entire Epson folder from /Library:Printers which I also did.) This problem happens on either a G4 1.25 running 10.4.5 or 10.4.6 and also on G5 Macs running 10.4.5 or 10.4.6
I stumbled upon the fact that if I disable the ethernet port using Network in System preferences, I am able to open the Epson TCP/IP fine. Also, If I use a DSL connection with different DNS settings instead of our office T1 network and settings I can also connect fine. I would guess the issue is therefore in DNS, but I am stumped here.

What printer is it- I mean, is it one of those with built-in ethernet?

  • New 'Print Setup Utility' for Lion?

I have been asked by one of our users if the Print Setup Utility with which she had become accustomed with her system running Tiger has been replaced with something else in Lion.  Is there something comparable in Lion that can either be placed as an alias on the desktop or on the dock?
    Marty

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ as the path, and either drag the PrintAndScan item to the right side of the Dock or drag the PrintAndFax item to the desktop.

  • Need help to find printer setup utility

I recently bought my first Mac and have slowly been adding to it over the last couple of weeks. Today I added a new printer that I wish to connect wirelessly. The printer is a Brother MFC-3360. I installed the software that came with the printer and had the printer connected directly to the Mac Book. It printed just fine.
I then disconnected the USB cable and plugged it into the Extreme Base station. It failed to print. According to the Extreme manual, I need to open printer setup utility, located in the utilities folder in the applications folder. Then from there I need to add the printer.
The problem is, I have no printer setup utility. Is there another place where it might be located?
Any other ideas will be much appreciated. Thank you!

Found problem. Went to Sys prefs -> Printers and Fax -> removed my printer and re-installed. Works like a charm.
