Tiger "quits" when eject ext flash drive???? Addressless addressbook

Folks:
Issues continue to crop up with Tiger, unlike those seen in Panther. A week back was finishing up working on a document which I saved to ext flash drive--closed the writing app, moved doc into flash drive, then ejected Flash drive by control/click and then maybe closed another app or turned off airport wireless &&& then got black window saying "You need to restart your computer." Then after restarted got an error window that said something like -- "You had to re-start your computer because OSX quit in the middle of what you were doing." OHHHH, the computer crashed!!!!??? I have ejected the Flash drive many times without this problem. Console crashreporter log showed single line entry for the time period that it happened--Thu Jun 21 17:41:44 2007 crashdump[94]: crashdump invoked as panicdump.
Is this what 4.10 is supposed to fix???
2). Needed my Addressbook to get email address of friend--opened the "ALL" part and there was only 15 or so addresses instead of what should have been 147 or so. Went to one of the smaller groups folders and all of the addresses were there??? How can there be more addresses in sub-category folder than in the total "All" folder?? Flipped back to the "All" folder after that just seconds later and lo and behold--all addresses were there??? This actually never went on with Panther frankly were stuff disappeared and the reappears seconds later--Is this an example of the SMART folder??? Will 4.10 fix this issue??

Folks:
Looking for some thoughts or ideas on why the entire system would "quit"--perhaps due to ejecting a flash drive? That seems more serious than an addressless addressbook, although when needing an address, one might hope to find it in Addressbook, right? In Panther applications would "quit" just because it felt like it--but not the whole system. Is this "normal" now, routine?

  • How do I eject the flash drive from an Officejet 8610 after scanning a file into it.

I used the front panel controls of my Officejet 8610 to scan an image into a flash drive plugged into the front panel of the 8610.
The 8610 recognized the presence of the drive just fine, and placed the scanned image on it as desired.
But for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to do a controlled ejection of the flash drive.  (I finally did a controlled power-down of the 8610 and removed the drive after the 8610 turned itself off.)
How do you do eject a flash drive from the front panel USB port?

Thank you for your post on the hp.com forums regarding safely ejecting your USB flash drive. In our printers, to remove your USB flash drive, all you need to do is - remove the flash drive. There is really no other method needed. You will not harm the flash drive, printer or files.
    Hope this helps.

  • Finder closes everytime I eject a flash drive

    Hi,
I like to leave Finder open on my desktop. Every time I eject a flash drive Finder is closing. I cannot find anything to change in Finder preferences to stop this. Any ideas appreciated.

Is the Finder window displaying the contents of the flash drive? If so, ejecting it will close the window.

  • Mbp '11 : windows ejects keyboard and touchpad when safely removing flash drive

If i connect a flash drive or an external hard drive, Windows will eject the keyboard and touchpad when "Safely Removing" any connected USB device, whether it be a printer, flash drive, or anything connected to a USB port.
As a temporary workaround, i either connect an external USB keyboard & mouse and restart windows, or set the power button to shutdown and restart windows.
    any way to fix this?

I don't get that with OS X, the light stays
on at full capacity, i.e., it doesn't even dim, and
it makes me feel that this is something that might
call for a 'fix' in OS X.
when you insert the drive it "mounts" to the desktop, right? in other words you can see it on the desktop?
as everyone else suggested, drag it to the trash to eject it, or do it using the finder. once you no longer see it mounted to the desktop, it is safe to remove it, light or no light.
i have usb/firewire drives which i made using internal drives and enclosures with power buttons that remain powered up once i dismount the drives. i eject them and zap the power once i finish using them, if i don't want to listen to the enclosure fans. in a nutshell, it's not OS X related that the light doesn't go out because it doesn't perform like the other OS, nor does it attempt to emulate it; they go about performing tasks quite diffently and OS X is much better ; ))

  • DIsk Utility Hangs When Formatting USB flash drive

I have a 4gb USB drive (Jetflash by Transcend) that's been usable formatted as FAT. I'd read that i/o would be a lot faster if I formatted as Mac OS Extended instead. In fact, I've done this with previous USB drives with success. When I try to reformat the drive in Disk Utility, it stalls at "Preparing to Erase." I've also tried going through Partition instead, but again, just stalls at the beginning. This is not a freeze or hang or spinning ball moment, but it will just sit there not doing anything. I can quit out of DU at any time. I've left DU alone, thinking this just may take a while, but it has stayed this way up to 3 hours. Suspiciously, there are no blinking lights on the usb drive during this process. I realize every USB flash drive must have different firmware that reacts differently to Macs and I may just be unable to Mac-format this. I've also taken the drive to other Macs all running 10.4.7 with the same results. Any ideas or workarounds will be appreciated. Thanks.

Update: I've tried on a 3rd mac, my g5/1.8 at home and plugged the USB flash drive to a powered usb hub. Now Disk Utility doesn't stall, but instead immediately states that it can't access the partition map. As the drive has public/private partition capability and also security features, I'm going to assume that's the reason for it to be only formattable as FAT. So now I'm looking for large capacity flash drives that are mac-formattable or find information that throughput is the same on a USB drive no matter how it's formatted.

  • Finder can't eject USB Flash drives, User Specific

I am unable to unmount any file drive that is attached to my computer using Finder for my main user profile.  (USB, SDHC, Hard drives, flash cards, flash drives, etc)  I don't get any error messages at all (nor does anything show up in the Console log).  If I hit command+e, click the eject button, or drag the drive to the trash, nothing happens at all.
I can use the "sudo umount f /Volumes/etc" command in terminal, and can eject using Disk Utility.  No matter what I do, I can't get it to work in Finder.  I've tried restarting the computer, finder, spotlight but to no avail.  I have fixed permissions, reinstalled Lion, deleted and reinstalled my User account, but none of these things has fixed my issue.
I am at my wit's end, and would really like to avoid trashing this user and starting fresh.

Are you running 3rd party software like an anti-virus or cleaning program? If so, try stopping them and try again. Also see:

  • Quite disgusted that the flash drive and camera kit don't work with apples usual ease and style. Fix it and redeem yourselves.

when will you fix this issue?

We are just fellow users here, these forums are not monitored by Apple - if you want to leave feedback for Apple then you can do so here http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
But in terms of the camera connection kit, it works as it is specified- as an SD card reader and as a direct connection to a camera. It is not advertised as being a flash drive connection kit.

  • Receiving fibre channel activity log email when unplugging usb flash drive

I found this to be very interesting.... I get the email from the log of the machine I am on.... this happens EVERY time I unplug my SanDisk CRUZER GATOR 8GB Flash Drive. I have a couple other non-sandisk drives and it doesnt seem to cause the same thing.
this really doesnt effect our xsan or anything, but its annoying and it worries me that it could screw something up potentially.....so I am just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?? or would know why this happens with just the sandisk...
This is on a MacPro 2 x 3ghz dual core xeons, 4gb memory. xsan 1.4.2

  • 10.7.5 Have to Force Eject Ext USB Drive After Sleep

Macbook Pro, Late 2011 (USB 2)
I'm finding that I always have to force eject two different 1TB ext USB HDD's after the computer sleeps. Sometimes I think it's even only after the drive spins down for a while.
Most often it's after I let Time Machine backup my laptop overnight.
I thought it was just this drive, until I got a new drive and it has the same problem, though it's not used for backups.
I've been unsuccessful trying to determine what may be using the drive as the eject error states is happening, but maybe that would help me understand if this is a legitimate problem or a bug. Force ejecting has had no noticeable effects, though it makes me extremely nervous on a backup volume. The other disk is a huge sample library that's not written to unless I add samples, so I don't force ejecting that one as much.
In searches for this problem I have only turned up drives that eject spontaneously.
    Thanks for any help.

OK, so a new search in here, not via google, found this:
    sudo lsof /Volumes/{volume name}
    result:
COMMAND PID   USER   FD   TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
    mds      67   root   21r   DIR   14,6      544    2 /Volumes/Backup_1TB
    Finder  152 andrew   55r   DIR   14,6      204   88 /Volumes/Backup_1TB/Backups.backupdb
So it looks like spotlight or finder. I'm not browsing the backup volume, but it looks like it thinks I am. I know there are lots of spotlight issues, too, but I;m not sure if that's the case here.
    I did try:
    mdutil -V /Volumes/Backup_1TB/ -s
    /Volumes/Backup_1TB:
        No index.
    /Volumes/Backup_1TB/Backups.backupdb:
        No index.
So it would appear that spotlight isn't doing anything...

  • Forced to restart when connecting ANY flash drive

I wanted to move a few files from one computer to another, so I plug in the USB into the other computer for the files (which was an HP laptop) and moved them to the flash.
Then, I plug it into my laptop.
It freezes immediately, and without hesitation from top to bottom grey starts filling down the screen, it's a thin layer that still lets me see a bit of the background.
When the gray has covered the entire screen, I get a message saying that I HAVE to restart my computer, or turn off then on.
So I unplug the usb and restart. Plug it in, starts over.
    Why?
I also plugged in a different USB and got the same problem.
NOTICE: From this point on it will get a little more technical, use the information above to try and help if you understand, if you understand what is below then try to help anyways.
Do you think that this: IOUSBFamily Log release for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Build 9G55
    will help?
If I install this, will it fix it?

  • Problems ejecting my USB flash drive

I recently acquired a USB flash drive which I'm using with my Intel iMac.
frequently, when I try to eject it by dragging the disk image to the trash icon (which turns into an eject icon for this purpose), I get an error message "The disk is in use and could not be ejected. Try quitting applications and try again.
I cannot work out which application I need to close ... I have been through every icon on the dock and made sure everything is shut - bar Finder and Dashboard which you don't seem to be able to close??
Any advice would be much appreciated - I'd like to just be able to eject the flash drive so it can be safely removed from the USB port, without having to shut down.

When you erase the drive, you'll see several format options. Mac OS Extended (and Mac OS Extended - Journaled) are the best choices, if you're going to use the drive with Macs only. If your going to exchange files with PCs, the DOS format is best.

  • Flash Drive Won't Eject as a Whole

My Computer (Windows 8) won't let me eject my flash drive in one piece.  It works fine on the other computers (Windows 7 & XP) in my house.  When I click "Safely Remove Hardware", three buttons appear:
Cruzer Micro [faded & not clickable]
    >  - Eject Removable Disk (F:)
    >  - Eject Removable Disk (G:)
When I eject both clickable links, the light on my flash drive doesn't turn off, but the "Safely Remove Hardware" link shows:
    ... [faded & not clickable]
Any way of fixing this?  Thanks.

  • Trouble ejecting flash drives with Snow Leopard

About every other time I try to eject my flash drive from my MacBook it freezes up the computer. My wife has the same problem on her computer. Is there anyone else that is having this problem and what can I do to fix it? Thanks!

Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.
Also, try reformatting that flash drive using Disk Utility w/Snow Leopard...windows format only.

  • How can I transfer my edited RAW files to a flash drive?

I have 30 RAW files (NEF) from a holiday party that I have edited, and would like to give to a friend for further editing. We both work on Macs. I selected the 30 photos in Bridge, went to "Copy to" and selected the flash drive. The raw files along with their xmp files show up. But unfortunately when I bring up the files on the flash drive using the "View as Cover Flow" option in Preview, they show up in the original RAW form - as if I'd just downloaded them off my camera again - without edits.
Many people have mentioned exporting and DNG conversion. With regard to the first: when I select photos, right click, and go to "export to" my only option is "hard drive". Once I select that, nothing appears to happen. No new folders or files seem to appear in my hard drive. With regard to the second: I am nervous about losing information via the DNG conversion. I want to make sure my friend has all the information pertaining to each photo in the event that she needs to do a more significant round of second edits.
How can I achieve this transfer? Also, should the fact that my friend plans on using Lightroom for edits bear any significance on my decisions? Thank you...

The Save as DNG is not in Bridge, It is only available in Camera Raw.
Open your file in ACR, at the lower left click the SAVE IMAGE button. From there you can select several different formats.
Select DNG and adjust the options. You can also embed the original raw file inside the DNG (but gives larger file size)
It's not clear if you are opening the files directly from the flash drive or saving them first to the hard drive.
I would recommend always saving files to the hard drive, eject the flash drive, and then open from there rather than directly from flash drive
We've all had flash drives that go bad or act wonky.
Not trying to work on the files while they still reside on the flash drive is just one less problem to worry about.
    Good Luck

  • Flash Drive not supported

    Hello everyone,
I purchased a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 1.0 GB flash drive not too long ago and it was working fine. Removed some software that was on it because I couldn't use it.
Used my flash drive today and I receive this error, but still kinda works...
"The disc could not be used because the disc drive is not supported. (Error code 0x80020025)"
The flash drive also does not eject the flash drive correctly. The little light that is on the flash drive does not turn off when I press the eject button in the OS hard drive icon.
I've tried reformating the flash drive and tried downloading the driver on the sandisk website, but it is for the Windows 98SE Operating System and does nothing for my iBook G4.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Stephanie
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.4)

Someone on another forum had a similar issue. Basically, you need to connect it to a Windows machine and uninstall the U3 software from it.
The error message you get indicates that the computer is trying to access the flash drive as if it was a CD writer.
