Tiger 'Restart or 'shutdown' fails

Tiger fails to restart or shutdown: From "Apple" menu or any keyboard entry ( Control-option-cmmd-eject, control-cmmd-eject ). Have to hold power button to shut down.
Have gone through repair process suggested by another thread:
DVD install startup to 'repair disk' with Disc Utility ( "No Repair Necessary"), Cocktail and OnyX used fully, repaired Disc Permissions, cache ( user and system) cleaning. During the startup off the Mac OS Install Disk for disc repair, when quitting , the 'restart' option did work.
Previous articles other sites suggested removing Norton or VersionCue CS2 , don't have them to start with.

hound dawg,
It's possible that a connected peripheral is causing this. Disconnect all peripherals except Apple keyboard and mouse and test. If it is a peripheral you'll have to isolate which one.
Also, create a new account, name it "test" and see how your shutdown works in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If this works go no further and let us know.
If not, you may be able to repair this with the 10.4.3 Stand Alone Combo Update. This is a full install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Repair permissions before and after update:
Navigate to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility (Double Click to Launch) > Choose your HD in the sidebar > First Aid Tab > Click on "Repair Disk Permissions". Also Verify Disk before update.

  • Tiger Restarts by himslef. Not the Random Shutdown!

If I keep it running for a long time (+2 hours) and I'm not using it (it is iddle, like downloading something) Tiger restarts!
It restarts, it is not a shutdown. If I let Firefox open with more than one tab when Tiger tries to restart firefox ask for confirmation on closing the tabs and it does not restart, so it is something software based (I think)
    anyone can help me?

    Hi Fokss,
The battery needs to be removed as well in order to reset the SMC. The SMC can be set to start up, shut down or sleep at specific times or intervals.
The other thing I would check is to see what the settings are in the system preferences>Energy Saver>Options. Is restart after a power failure checked? If so the SMC could be getting weird when the battery/power-cord switch functions
An API is an application programming interface. The way OS X.4+ handles everything it does happens through this I/O API part of the OS. I don't believe a re-install of the OS would help and adding an ext HDD may compound the confusion. On a side note of ext. FW HDD's I have found that images/audio and or video files that are not contained within folders are causing other issues with this same I/O API as the OS wants to treat the HDD as some other type of device especially bus powered HDD's
I would just back up the important files. Get your email stuff from Home (User)>Library>Mail drag folder to external. Your safer bet is to just copy this Library folder to a CD as other info you would most likely want is in here. The logs are located here in this library as well. There are also logs located in the OS HDD>Library>Logs. Both are different.
Console shouldn't purge the logs upon restart. If you click on logs in the top left of the window the list should appear. Click on the CrashReporter's arrow to expand the list.
You hadn't listed aperture before. What other of these types of apps are you using and how is their performance? How are your camera connections?
    Thanks

  • Intermittent System Hang at Restart and Shutdown

    Hi Everyone,
I finally got around to upgrading my old iMac G4 to Leopard yesterday, and almost immediately found a problem that's driving me nuts...
It started right after I installed Leopard from the DVD using Erase and Install, and updated to 10.5.7 using the combo updater. After the combo install completed successfully, I clicked "Restart," and was immediately left with a blank desktop (just the wallpaper, no icons, no menubar and no spinning pinwheel/spokes on the desktop as some others have seen) and the cursor (which is responsive). It looks like the Finder and Dock quit, and the restart or shutdown procedure then came to a halt. Some keyboard shortcuts still work, such as the ones to open the shut down dialog box, and the force quit box--but clicking any of the buttons does nothing. The keys for brightness, volume and eject also still work. The HD was quiet, and after about 5 mins I held in the power button to shut down. After restarting, I opened Console and found no log entries at the exact time I clicked Restart--in fact, nothing logged until the next power up.
I restarted and shut down a few times after that, some while using Software Update. About half of those times, the hang occurred, and if there were any other open apps, they did quit along with the Finder and Dock. I decided to reinstall 10.5, using Disk Utility on the DVD to write zeroes to the disk before reinstalling. From there, I applied the 10.5.7 combo update--and from there the problem started again, and still apparently without any log entries. It's worth mentioning that I tried Leopard on an external FW LaCie HD connected to this Mac a few months ago (ver. 10.5.4 then), and the problem existed then as it does now.
Other tidbits: The internal HD I'm using is less than a month old, and worked well with Tiger. The Mac passed the Apple Hardware Test on the original install CD. Disk Utility on the Leopard DVD found no problems and no permissions errors. I've used the Spotlight prefpane to stop it from indexing the HD, and I have Time Machine turned off. I've reset the PRAM. There are no peripherals attached other than the keyboard and mouse. There is no third party software installed (yet). I've tried looking at the forums on MacFixIt, and using google, but haven't found an answer. Any ideas?
    Thanks for helping,
    Eric

Update... After trying to find the source of the problem for a three weeks, including trying another Erase and Install using Kappy's suggestions, only to have the hang continue to occur repeatedly, I gave up and decided that Leopard has an unresolved bug that causes these symptoms on my old G4 iMac.. With the iMac going to Vintage status this month, I decided to reinstall Tiger on it, and it's future is now going to be life as a wireless print server.
I bought a new Mac Mini with 10.5.6 preinstalled. Since the new Mac has a lot of software installed that I won't use (print drivers, languages, Garageband, iWeb...), I did an Erase and Install on the first day, and used the Combo updater to go to 10.5.7. Within a few hours of use, with no 3rd party software installed, the hang I described happened again--the Mini showed the exact same symptoms as the old iMac. Thinking it may be something with the Combo updater, I did another Erase and Install, and this time used the Delta update to go to 10.5.7. Since then--about two weeks now--the hang has not returned.
As a side note to this, my parents own an Early 2008 iMac which shipped with 10.5.4 and was updated in March to 10.5.6 using the Combo updater. While helping them with it recently, it hung at restart--showing the same symptoms as my two Macs. This happened after they used it for about two months with no problems. I did an Erase and Install, and used Software Update to go to 10.5.7 (meaning the Combo updater was used). The hang hasn't happened again in the past two weeks.
With 3 different Macs now showing these symptoms, I'm convinced it's a Leopard problem, maybe something in the Combo updaters. I'm going to be updating my wife's Powerbook G4 to Leopard using a retail Leopard disc, and will have to use a Combo updater to bring it to 10.5.7. If the hang occurs with her Mac, I'll post a followup.

  • IMac will only restart or shutdown from power button.

My iMac will only restart or shutdown from the power button, it also will not logoff users. It starts ok, but only after a hard reboot?? I have repaired permisions and no change. I have a clone I can restore from but any ideas whats up here?
The only things that I know I have altered are deleting files saved during migration from Panther (months ago)and running Unbuntu Live CD.
    iMac G4 15 Mac OS X (10.4.7) 728ram

Are you booting into Ubuntu Linux? Most of us here wouldn't now anything to do with it. If the problem is occurring when booted into Mac OS X, it may be a sign of data corruption in the power management and user settings. Some corruption is easy to repair such as fixing the directory (which I'd only do after a clone). Here's how according to my FAQ:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
And I assume the issue is with your iMac G4.

    iTunes RADIO is not working.
“iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again.” Try as I may, as many as ten attempts, trying to connect after restart, after shutdown, nothing works. Just so …
iTunes STORE not “connectable” with my otherwise perfectly-working internet connection, viable, up and running for all other uses.
Simply put, firstly, I can't connect to the internet when I click on Radio.  People are quite suspicious that this is Apple incompetence or your company's famous arrogance for this commonly-suffered problem that you won't or “can’t” fix.
Read the many web comments and you won’t be pleased with yourselves: the suspicion is that if you ruin internet radio on iTunes, Apple will somehow make more money on music downloads, etc. Bull.
Also, thirdly, my old playlist of 20 or so internet radio stations in the Ambient category STILL PLAYS !
Then fourth, I installed the latest available version of QuickTime Player 7.app Version 7.6.6 but it didn’t solve the problem either. I had QuickTime Player.app Version 10.2, but substituted what Apple website said was the latest, LOWER NUMBERED QuickTime Player version of 7.6.6
Fifth, I can't connect to iTunes store no matter what I do or what user group's advice I try. So I can’t buy or download anything from iTunes. Bad for business.
Sixth, I updated to the latest version of iTunes but this weird problem remains. All suggested Apple fixes or user group fixes are useless. Where is Apple’s famous technical competency, vaunted customer support?, and user-friendly product reputation? Get it back, please.
Solve this problem of yours ASAP for us, your numerous disgruntled, dissatisfied customers of iTunes. You can do better, should, and really –in all fairness- must.

Jailbreaking your iPhone forfeits your ability to receive any support on that phone, including from this forum.
You'll have to search elsewhere for answers to your issue.

  • Auto restart of messages failed in Adapter Engine PI 7.0 and 7.1

    Hi,
I am trying to figure out a way to automatically restart the messages failed with in the adapter engine (because of the target system not available etc.). These messages are in System Error status and I can restart them from RWB. But I am looking for any report or something available either on Java or ABAP engines so that I can automate the process.
    Thanks for the help.

I have come across the web service AdapterMessageMonitoring in PI 7.0 (Found it in Web service navigator) with possibly useful methods. But I could not find the same service on PI 7.1. Any clue on this?
Also, the getMessageList methods works perfectly as expected but the resendMessages mehtod fails with the exception -

  • Mouse Acceleration settings lost on restart or shutdown

Every time I restart (or shutdown -r via terminal) my powermac it loses it's mouse settings. Strange, because only the mouse speed setting is lost. The setting is set to max when I login after a restart (I never shut down, it's my database, web and file server too). I did a pram zap serveral times but that didn't work (or maybe the mouse setting is not stored in pram ) but, does someone know why this thing happens? Or how to fix it?

Sorry, for late raction: I didn't get any mail from the support discussions... Usual I do, but that seems to be disabeld? Well, anyway my mac: Power Mac G4 Single 400Mhz Gigabit ethernet graphite (Model: M5183 printed on the top of the connectivity area), 1.38GB ram, 2x 80 gig hd OS X 10.4.4, radeon 9800 pro. I don't know it's age but I bought it 2nd handed from a guy who had os9 on it.
Mouse: Logitech Optical mouse (as it says on the bottem, usual 3-button, scroll, usb wired) with the latest logitech control center. The speed if very strange: if I put the slider to max it won't even get the speed it gets after a reboot.
And the terminal shutdown -r thingy: I do that via my cell phone / SSH. My phone (nokia 3650) has no VNC support via external app. so I can't do ssh, open a vnc server connect to the vnc server and reboot it the apple way.
Not a big problem (usual uptime 9 weeks or more), but a stange one.

  • How to enable password request for restart and shutdown?

    Hi,
I'm neither a Linux nor an Arch Linux newbie, but inexperienced regarding this particular issue.
I want to enable password request for restart and shutdown and want to know if I'm mistaken, because trial and error might become to time-consuming while working on a project.
    I read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … o_shutdown.
    $ ls -hAl /usr/bin/shutdown
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Apr 22 03:02 /usr/bin/shutdown -> systemctl
If I try to run $ shutdown -hP 28 or $ shutdown -c nothings happens, I need to run $ sudo shutdown -hP 28 and $ sudo shutdown -c and type a password. That's the way I want it.
If I e.g. run $ shutdown -r now no password is needed. I want to disable this. It should behave the same way as shutdown -hP/-c behave. I want to type
$ sudo shutdown -r now or $ sudo systemctl reboot etc. and then the password should be required.
    $ sudo grep -vn "#" /etc/sudoers | grep [[:blank:]]
    72:root ALL=(ALL) ALL
    73:rocketmouse ALL=(ALL) ALL
The user "rocketmouse" should have all permissions after typing a password, but not without typing the password.

  • G5 2GHz DP (2003) - freezes when trying to restart or shutdown, etc.

Just bought a used G5 2GHz dual (2003 model) with 3 gigs of ram, 160 gig hd, original 9600 pro card plus another ATI VGA card (that's what system profiler calls it). I don't have an adapter for the 9600 pro card so i can't run my VGA monitor from it.
    Problems:
    1. If I try to restart or shutdown from the apple menu, the menu bar and dock go away and leave just the background and mouse and freezes. Never restarts or shuts down without using the button on the front. The mouse moves around but nothing else.
    2. If I boot from the install/restore disc, it works fine but the hard drive is funky...sometimes i can do disk repair (and it will unmount) and other times it says it can't unmount.
    3. If I try to run the Apple Hardware Test (2.1 on the disc), it tells me to hold the opttion key down while the machine boots. If i do that, it never boots and further, if i keep holding the option key down, the fans start running louder and louder till I really was afraid it was going to blow up and so hit the button on the front to turn it off.
So, how do I run AHT? All the manual and info I've read says to hold down the option key to access it but if I do that, like I said, the machine will not boot up.

Hello Again! "If I boot from the install/restore disc, it works fine but the hard drive is funky".
If you can't boot from the install disc and correct the problem then DiskWarrior is probably the only thing other than an erase and install that will correct the problem. Sometimes DiskUtility can't repair problems. The disk's directory is the "road map" where everything is located on the disk and a corrupt one manifests itself in various ways. You might try booting with the shift key down to force a disk check but it sounds like DiskUtility can't repair it. Tom

  • 10.5.x Won't Restart or Shutdown

This has me stumped. The ONLY way I can restart or shutdown my Mac is via the terminal (short of holding down the power button).
As you can imagine software updates don't like this. I sure don't like this.
Anyone have any bright ideas? I've tried zapping the PRAM to no avail.

Press the Power button and hold in for 6-10 seconds to force a shutdown. Boot into Safe Mode and see if the problem ceases. If it does not then create a new user account with admin status. Set it as the default startup user then restart into the new user account. Does the problem cease?
Can you boot the computer successfully from your Snow Leopard installer DVD?

  • OSX 10.8 KP on restart and shutdown

Ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion, my system will shutdown as normal go to a black screen, then start beeping 3 times until I hold down the power button for a few seconds until it shuts down.
It runs fine - as long as I put the MBP to sleep... otherwise it's KP city.
Based on what I've seen so far I've done the following:
    1 - reseated the RAM
2 - Verified and Repaired permissions on the Mac HDD
I am running bootcamp with Windows 7.
I think I can rule out hardware because (a) I don't have a shutdown/restart problem when using windows; but moreover (b) I have my backup of OSX 10.7.3 running from a firewire drive that also doesn't KP on shutdown/restart
I've been troubleshooting this by going through the various forums and google searches.  I don't typically post unless I'm out of ideas - and well... I'm out of ideas and feel like I'm chasing my own tail.
Anything constructive would be helpful.  Thanks
