Tiger seems to restart the GUI after minutes - don't know where to start.

Hi,
To start, I apologize if this is not the correct discussion forum to place this post in!
I have had a 17" Powerbook for a number of years. Recently the hard drive failed, and I replaced the drive with a newer larger capacity drive. It was actually fairly easy!
Anyways, a couple of weeks has gone by, and a problem has developed. I believe the issue existed before the hard drive failed, but that being about 4 weeks ago I can't exactly remember.
From time to time, the GUI seems to restart - if thats possible. Watching on the screen, after a certain keypress it seems like I'm logged off, then logged back on. It only seems to happen when I'm using the system - writing an email, using excel, using iPhoto.
Digging through the system logs, this seems to come up right before (WindowServer.log):
Jun 26 18:02:35 [64] "loginwindow" (0x3f4f) set hot key operating mode to normal
Jun 26 18:02:35 [64] Hot key operating mode is now normal
Jun 26 19:04:02 [64] kCGErrorFailure: CGXDisableUpdate: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Safari" for over 1 second. Server has re-enabled them.
Jun 26 19:04:04 [64] kCGErrorFailure: CGXDisableUpdate: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Safari" for over 1 second. Server has re-enabled them.
Doing a ps aux right after the restart, from terminal, I see that this processes seem to be the ones which are restarted:
sean@Sean ~ % ps aux|grep 6:54PM

I've read through most of these forums over the past couple of weeks, and went ahead and cleaned my caches, zap'd my prom, and actually re-installed OS X from scratch 2 times, and I still have the issue.
On the weekend I went ahead and created another account, sean2. When using that account I don't seem to experience any of the restarts. Does this make any sense?
On the last os X install, I used the system for a while before installing iLife 06, and didn't experience any restarts either. Could something with iLife be running in the background causing the restarts?
Or is there a better way to troubleshoot this? I am a very experienced unix person if that helps!

Do you get anything in the Crash Reporter section in the logs (Console > ~/Library Logs > Crash Reporter). You said you re-installed the system. Did you do an archive and install or did you "erase & install"? It seems to me that you went fro the former. To begin with trash the com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.systemuiserver.plist files from ~/Library/Preferences and restart. Any better?
