Tiger Server boots but refuses all connections

Hi,
I've had a trusty old Powermac G4 (AGP) running Tiger Server (10.4.11) for almost a year now. We use it to serve OD, NFS homes, MySQL & printing. Apart from the occasional issues setting up the mobile home folders, it has been doing great. It has 896 MB of RAM and 3 HDD (two 500 MB and one 80MB one).
However, after suffering a power outage, the machine has stopped accepting any kind of connection to it (ssh, web, vnc, OD, nfs,...). Morever, although it seems to boot ok, we can't get past the login screen. Neither network nor local accounts are accepted.
I've booted from an external installation media to check the system drive (repair disk and permissions) and things are still not working.
Any ideas?

Access it from another FireWire Mac via Target Disk Mode and then follow my standard instructions:
Backup first
It is always best to have a full bootable backup before you install. If you fail to do this you will be unable to return to this OS if you decide you don't like the new OS. Also there is a slight chance that an install could lose everything on the Mac. The backup must be to an external hard disk or another Mac. Preferably use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of the whole disk. If you do not have a disk or partition without an OS it will probably not be practical to produce a bootable OS at this stage so backup to a sparse disk image for the time being and ensure that you have sufficient partitions in future.
Erase before the install
Once you have a bootable backup on an external disk it is best to erase the internal disk with the new installer DVD before you install. I prefer to split disks into two partitions with a full OS on each so that one can be used to maintain the other.
During the install
Preferably do not import any data or preferences from earlier OSs during the install process as this can reintroduce bugs.

I have been receiving the message ' Cannot get mail. The connection to the server failed' but I am connected to WIFI.  I have also been receiving  'Cannot send mail, an error occurred while delivering this message.

Hmm, that's odd JeanEB. The error message referts to the connection to your email server not to cellular data or connection to wi-fi. Go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars> Select your account and type in your password again. If this doesn't resolve it, delete/re-add the email account.

• 10.3.9 Server slow/Dropping/Refusing AFP connections

Over the past 48 hours, our 10.3.9 unlimited server has been sporadically dropping or refusing AFP connections, or providing connected users extremely slow service. After a restart it will appear to function normally for a few hours, then continue to act up. There have been no configuration changes recently, all the disks appear healthy, the network traffic is light to moderate, and the CPU usage is low. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting this?
-1.25 G4
-768 MB RAM
-1000BT ethernet; clients connected via 1000BT switch

This is mostly a "me too" but I've got similar issues. Our Panther server will suddenly become very slow. Not just file transfers; using remote desktop to attempt a login at the "console" is also slow. Stopping and restarting AFP service clears it up temorarily, as does rebooting the server.
The coincidence here is that it started happening when we upgraded a lab of Windows 98 boxes to Windows XP. You would think this would only affect SMB service, but it's AFP that gets hit.
Again, server shows light CPU and Network loads, but transfers perform like I would expect from 10Mb hubs instead of 100/1000Mb switches.
Was your performance drop just a sudden occurence or did it happen after a significant change somewhere in your network?

I too am running xp spiii on my mac with lion. However I installed xp while running snow leopard then upgraded to lion and both are running fine. If you have the support disc that came with the imac all the relevant drivers are on there. The only other thing i would suggest is that you get spiii and upgrade to that.

• SMTP Postfix refuses all connections both internal and external

My server initially started bouncing all outgoing e-mail from our users saying that an invalid user name and password has been specified. Now it has progressed to bouncing all SMTP traffic both incoming and outgoing. I've got hours into trying to decode the mystery of why Postfix is doing this but still can't come up with an explanation. The server is an OD master running just AFP and Mail. Here is the output from postconf -n

• Got sync but refusal to connect, ongoing for sever...

Hello!
Nice great big wall of text for my first ever post
I've been having issues with my broadband for several months now, I get the flashing amber (or solid red) broadband light of doom and the router although sync'd at a massively reduced speed of 2.9meg, simply refuses to connect. Something like "could not be established: connection reset by peer/user/idletimeout".
This really all started around Christmas 2010, when my connection dropped for the first time years, no fault was ever found and the BB mysteriously started working again at around half it's orginal speed, then we got the 20meg upgrade at the exchange and my connection shot up to 14meg, 3 weeks later it died and i've had issues ever since.
I call support and tell them what i've tried (everything on their help sheet), I then get told they're reporting it to engineers/techinical and that it will take 5 days or more (which is conveniently i beleive the time where they can declare it case closed), the fault then mysteriously disappears and i've got a 14meg sync and im connected, the case seems to be closed, then 2 weeks later (usually on a Sunday morning at around 7am) the fault comes back again. Rinse/repeat, over and over and over and over again.
Yesterday I woke up to no connection, spent the best part of 3 hours repeatedly calling BT. I've got a phone fault logged and an engineer coming out on Tuesday.
I've got a BB fault logged and am expecting a call this morning, but as I now have connection again, im betting they assume it's fixed and don't call.... In which case i'll be without internet again in 2 weeks time.
I spoke to the Engineer that came out near Christmas (and I use that term loosely, because as a real engineer I find it's use offensive), who told me that with the new upgraded ADSL, the equipment at the exchange will refuse a connection below around 8meg (apparently it's causing massive problems), so what im assuming is that noise on my line is causing my BRAS to be reduced to the point where the exchange refuses my connection.
It's infuriating that this fault is clearly just being "patched up" and the root cause is never beign tackled.
In the quality engineering world, we call that "fire fighting" and in the defence sector quality engineering world, "fire fighting" gets people killed.
The staff at the Indian call centre are more concerned with meeting daily targets than they are with fixing my fault (which I do sympathise with). When you set daily targets on staff, they don't want to spend hours helping one person and will take the first opportunity to fob you off.
I'd also take a guess that they have to call back a certain number if times if the phone call is cut off? Because one guy I spoke to (once he realised I knew more than him) cut me off, called me back, cut me off, called me back and then cut me off again. Again just meeting his targets.
It's annoying but I don't blame them at all, they've got jobs to keep and mouths to feed. But in my humble opinion their daily targets are THE reason my fault is (and I dare say many others) not being fixed!!

Rgr that, will do. Assistance greatly appreciate
Interesting development, I just lost the BB again and the router reset as usual to a 2.9 - 3meg sync.... I decided to do something i've been told never to do and I repeatedly connected/disconnected the phone line (maybe 50 times) in an attempt to force the exchange into registering a fault/disconnection. Now guess what? im back on now 14meg sync (8meg actual tested).
Ohhhh this is exciting, I wonder if this was luck or not? I'd rather not risk testing it though!
14:32pm, been up since some silly hour this morning waiting for the call I was promised (which I had doubts about anyway, with it being Sunday), no contact :/
Mind if I drop in a few tags to help people searching the web for this problem?

• Server refuses all connections randomly one day.

I got home from school, did my homework, and tried to print it through my mac mini server running CUPS. It says the printer is offline. I tried SSHing to the mac mini, but I get this:
ssh: connect to host 10.0.1.31 port 22: Connection refused
I also run a minecraft server from it, and I can't connect to that either. The server also won't show up under the "shared" section of the finder. (AFP)
I tried turning off the firewall, but that didn't help. I also rebooted the computer. Does anyone know of something I can try? The server can connect to the internet fine.
It's being assigned a static internal ip via my airport extreme.

Forget me. My iMac somehow connected to the public network, not the one the mini was on.

• Airport Refuses all connects..

I had one of the old airports - the dome - and I have a second airport - the one that looks like a macbook powersupply - to extend the dome's range.
The dome finally died. So I retired it and brought the new(er) airport into the house to replace the dome. I have gone through the set-up multiple times, using all the security methods, but I can't get any device to successfully join after entering in my password.
On WEP mode, it tells me that I entered the wrong password....on WPA/WPA2, it just tells me that the device is unable to join.
I've tried entering the password as both "password" and password.
I've hard reset, and factory-reset the airport, only to reach the same end.
I am trying to connect from my iphone and ipad -- both devices were successfully connecting previously to the old airport and can connect to the lan @ work, so I know it's not the devices themselves.
Out of ideas - can anyone suggest something?
Thanks...

I had set-up the airport dhcp address pool that there was overlap with the router address pool which was causing the airport connects to fail...
Just in case someone else has this issue.

• Client Upgraded from Tiger to Leopard Can No Longer Connect to Tiger Server

I just finished upgrading a G5 2GHz DP Powermac from Tiger to Leopard. This was an Archive and Install upgrade with importing the old settings. After verifying the account migration, including .Mac connectivity, and fixing all 3rd party software compatibilities/upgrades, I tried to connect to our Tiger 4.11 server by clicking on the server's Icon in the Shared section of the Finder Sidebar. The finder then switches to browse the the server for shares: "Connecting..." is displayed under the tool bar, with a "Share Screen..." and "Connect As..." buttons to the right.
At this point the "Connecting..." remains displayed with the spinning circle in the bottom right of the Finder window.... spinning. This situation continues for several minutes until is seems the system gives up.
If I click on the Path button on the Tool Bar, and go up to the Shared level, ALL the Shares on the Network are displayed, including all the Tiger Client machine shares. I can click on the triangle beside the Tiger Client's icon, and all the drives and home directories on the Mac are listed. All the client shares can be accessed without any issues. NOTE: There are no other Leopard clients on the LAN.
Prior to the Leopard upgrade, this client could connect to the Tiger server as well. All the other clients on the LAN can access the Tiger server also.
On the Leopard client I have tried clicking and the "Connect As..." button and using the menu "Connect to Server" and specifying the server's IP, and I get the same "Connecting..." message with a "non-connecting" result.
I can only assume that somehow the Account Name and password are not being passed correctly. But, using "Connect As..." should resolve that. However, "Connect As..." does not give me a user/password window!
If I check the AFP Access log on the Server, the only messages displayed are "Mounted Volume..." No messages in the error log, and no messages in the "Connections" section.
Can anyone help me figure out why the Leopard client can not connect to the Tiger Server?
My apologies if the description of my problem is a bit disjointed. I have been thrown into server admin and am learning "Trial by Fire".
Any help or suggestions on how to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

OK. A quick update.
After waiting for about 10 minutes for the rotating circle in the bottom right corner to stop, I was able to click on the "Connect As..." button. It took another 10 minutes, but the Connect As window eventual popped up. I entered the Userid and Password (saving to Keychain) and was able to see all the sharepoints on the the server. I browsed all the connected drives and folders without issue.
I then disconnected from the server. Reviewing the AFP logs on the server shows messages for the connection Login and Logout.
I then tried to reconnect to the server, and again another 10 minutes wait, although this time the Leopard client eventually connected automatically with the proper User, as per the AFP logs confirms.
Although, the client can now connect to the server, for it to take 10 minutes will be unacceptable to management, not to mention the end user. Tiger clients can connect in a couple seconds!
Is there a way to reduce the Leopard login time to, say, a couple seconds, like it does with the Tiger clients?
Again, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Gary

• Can Tiger Server host Leopard Clients?

Can Tiger Server host Leopard Clients?
I have Mac OS X Tiger clients on Tiger Server. If the clients upgrade to Leopard will they be able to access their user accounts or network shares?

In my case, rebooting the Tiger server restored access to all accounts except the original one that would not work. I've successfully logged in with 3 separate user accounts, and have just the one returning an unspecified error.
I did review the other post regarding setting up AFP, but we've already done that. I don't see that that could be the issue given I've got 3 of 4 accounts working. Unless there's something missing on that one account that I'm not thinking of.

• Server Admin refuses to connect, servermgrd runs but no ports are open

Server Admin refuses to connect to server when run locally or remotely. Upon investigating, servermgrd seems to run but when I run network utilities and port scan the server, neither port 311 or 687 are open. All other services appear to be running fine. No firewall is running. Server Monitor also has the same problems but WorkGroup Manager seems to work fine.
About 3 weeks ago, I had the problem and after trying many things, I did a clean install but the problem has reappeared after a few days/weeks.
At some point, servermgrd was crashing with a message about NSURL.... (lost and forgot the exact message).
-Tried to remove all the files in /private/var/servermgrd/
This solved the crashes but it now runs without opening the ports. After starting, it doesn't run away and consume any CPU.
Could not locate in system.log, console.log and servermgr.log any error messages indicatind something is wrong with servermgrd.
The log does show that server names are coherent.
Apr 18 23:06:31 server-1 servermgrd: servermgr_dns: hostname and DNS entries for this server are synchronized
- Tried rebooting.
- Tried running servermgrd with various flags, including alternate port but nothing happen. In fact the alternate ports do noot seem to get open. Even passing faulty options, it runs without complaining !
- Tried to reinstall the admin tools
- Tried to remove keychain paswords entries
- Tried Disk Utilities repair permissions.
Searching the posts, found somebody talkingabout servermgr_ctl
I'm starting to suspect some hardware failure (RAM).
Any suggestion how to test the ram.
Running out of idea.
Desperate for solution.
Background
OS X Server 10.4.9
Server Admin version Version 10.4.7 (157.8)
Xserve Dual G4 with 2 GB ram.   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Ok, I ran memtest 4.2 and discovered the ram was failing, In replacing the dimm, they started working again so it may have been a mis-seated dimm module or some oxidation on the contact. My file system was already corrupt despite it being a fresh install. Then I checked and notice that the file com.apple.servermgrd.plist in Library preferences was gone. Either I stuppidly deleted it trying to fix the problem or it was hosed by the memory/file system corruption. Anyway, I copied it from another server and Both Server Admin and Server Monitor are now working.
SOLVED.
PS: in view of this event, once I'm satisfied the memory issues is solved, I'll do again a clean install. Who know what else was corrupted.

Hi Ken,
Wow, I've logged into adobe and never seen your response until now.
I need to make the forums more of a daily stop I guess.
Thank you for your response, When I go to the Archives, it states I have none. In addition, previously when I'd tried to move items to the archive, they just disappeared
Currently my desktop is not connecting at all, Everytime I connect, it's states "We have now logged you out" and requests I login again.
I have of course rebooted,
Gone into taskmanager, killed all the relevant threads,  tried again to login through the desktop, no luck, I'll have to uninstall it, make sure the threads are killed, then reboot it and then reinstall it, but I've not had the time to do that.
On another note, and just as a point of reference, myself, personally, I hate these "cloud" file repositories (not to be confused with adobe cloud services which I love) but the file repositories themselves imho, are a blackhole of resource usage when one doesn't/isn't using them,
Is there a way we can use it more of a "ftp" sort of thing, when I want to I can  put files there?  There is no way to "Download" the repository, no way to download the folders.. only individual files and then it takes I think three different steps before the download starts.. I find this very inhibiting.  Just an fyi. for what it's worth.
Please, feel free to contact me,
