Tiger slower internet than Panther

I've just updated to Tiger from Panther. Web pages are now loading very slow. I know that there have been some other posts about this, but after sorting through them, I am more confused than ever. Are there no solutions?
Thanks!

Hi g, Welcome to Apple Discussions!
That's good news! It means the issue is limited to your user account, not systemwide.
Log back into your normal user account:
Here's the whole litany for thoroughly checking your home folder.
1. Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
• Restart and test your applications.
• If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Times RO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
• Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
• Restart and test your applications.
• If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
• Navigate to YourHome/Library.
• Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
• Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
• Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
• Click on "apply to all"
• If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.
Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
4. Navigate to YourHome/Library/Caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.

  • Why Mac getting much slower internet than PC?

I'm on ultimate package from Rogers - it was great till 3 weeks ago, I got my 49Mbs download and 2Mbs upload. 2 weeks ago it's dropped to 1/2. After hours on the phone with Rogers they sent technician. After checking all cables and everything else, he got on his laptop with Windows full speed and I got on every of my 5 Macs 1/2 of the speed.
Rogers said to call Apple and ask for system update)) this is crazy or what? Seriously, any suggestions?

I got the below email after the upgrade beginning of July.
    We’ve
    upgraded our network
    Hello,Good news. We’ve
upgraded our network in your areaRemember we let you know we were rolling out our
faster broadband? We’ve now done it in your area. We always offer the fastest
speed your line can take and now your broadband speed and connection should be
faster and more stable than before.
You can find out more at www.bt.com/networkupgrade
We’re sorry if you lost your broadband and phone connections for a few
minutes during the upgrade, but they should be working again now.
If not, restart your BT Home Hub or router by pressing the restart or on/off
button. That should sort things out.Your line needs time
to settle downFor the next ten days or so, your broadband might
slow down or even stop now and again. That’s normal and your speed will soon
settle down. You can help it along by leaving your BT Home Hub or router on all
the time and using your broadband as much as you can for this period. How to fix error
messages on BT VisionIf you are a BT Vision subscriber and you were
watching an on demand programme on BT Vision during the upgrade, and you briefly
lost your broadband connection, you may have seen an on-screen error message
(V04). Things should be back to normal now, but if you’re still getting an error
message, please restart your BT Vision box by holding down the power button for
    about six seconds.
If other things connected to your phone or broadband line are playing up, you
might need to restart them too.
If you’ve tried all the above and still have problems, try our help pages or call us on
    0800 111 4567. We’re here to help.
    Thanks for choosing BT.

  • Rainbow spinning cursor and slow internet recently

I am not very tech savvy but I will try and describe what is going on. Recently (last week or so) my computer has been extremely slow and the rainbow spinning cursor seems to appear all the time. I notice it mainly when I am using the internet, mainly because I am mostly on the internet when I use my computer. I believe it is a problem with my computer because my husband has a 2011 MacBook Pro and he does not have any problems with his computer. My computer is a 2010 MacBook Pro, and I ran an Etre Check to see if it helps. I typically use Google Chrome as my browser (we both do) and my operating system is OS X.

  • Windows 7 Ultimate (64-Bit) fresh install, only WLAN and video driver installed but EXTREMELY slow internet connection...

I recently checked my internet connection on my Asus G53SW and found that it was extremely slow on both the LAN and WLAN connections. I checked with a different laptop (old HP Pavilion) and I get a steady 74mbps+ connection using the same LAN cable and
also with the WLAN connection. My ISP has checked their side and everything is fine.
To try and resolve the issue I tried uninstalling, disabling and tweaking various software and even tried safe mode with networking, all to no avail. I then decided to do a complete fresh install this afternoon. I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
successfully onto my SSD and everything went smoothly. I have now only installed Nvidia video drivers and the (only) WLAN driver from the Asus support site.
My WLAN connection remains incredibly slow (amost half what it is on the HP and my MacBook Pro). Clearly this is an issue with either the Asus laptop or Windows but I don't know how to proceed in order to eliminate which it could be other than to try a different
    o/s to W7-Ult.
Can anyone help who knows more about this than me? Perhaps someone who has had a similar or the same problem because this is giving me a severe headache!
Thanks in advance to all and for any advice.
    <script id="ncoEventScript" type="text/javascript">function DOMContentLoaded(browserID, tabId, isTop, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw"); if(null != object) { object.DOMContentLoaded(browserID,
    tabId, isTop, url);} }; function Nav(BrowserID, TabID, isTop, isBool, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw"); if(null != object) object.Nav(BrowserID, TabID, isTop, isBool, url); }; function NavigateComplete(BrowserID, TabID,
    isTop, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw"); if(null != object) object.NavigateComplete(BrowserID, TabID, isTop, url); } function Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw");
    if(null != object) object.Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url); }; </script>

Thank you for responding. As I stated in my original post the reason I went through this process was because of an extremely slow internet connection from both the WLAN and LAN connections on my G53SW. At that time I had all of the correct drivers on the
machine. Whilst I would agree that with the machine only having a video and WLAN driver it may well not be working 'optimally', the rationale for doing this was to get the machine working with the minimum of processes to show that it was not anti-virsu software,
Steam or the like causing interference.
I have changed out both of the HDDs this evening (a primary SSD and a secondary 1Tb HDD) for a clean hybrid 1Tb Seagate drive. Once I have installed all of the Asus drivers (and nothing else) I will try the speed test again and report back.
I can now report that with a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 and ONLY Asus drivers as supplied the issue remains. On a connection where I should see around 75mbps I am actually getting around 18mbps, sometimes considerably slower. This only affects
    my Asus machine.

  • [SOLVED] Extremely slow internet

    Hello.
I'm having a problem with really slow internet on Arch, but it's working really fast and smooth on Windows. This started to happen once i moved my old HDD to a new built computer, so i wouldn't have to reformat etc. (Now i have reformatted and also tried Debian, same thing there and now)
    Any ideas?

  • Very slow internet (Dekalb county Indiana)

I am having problems with my internet speed. on thursday my internet connection speed was over 1000kbs but when i came home friday night my connection speed was only 168kbs. this has been going on for three days now. My modem is a westell 7500. if anyone could provide insight on why this has happened so suddenly it would be greatly appreciated. also we had some storms go though here and I was also wondering if that could be a reason for the rapid slowdown.

I too am experiencing this exact same issue, storms on Thursday, extremely slower internet since Friday (Normal download is up to 768kbps..use to get atleast 124kbps, now I can barely achieve 37kbps). This is in Central Florida. Called customer service on two different occasions was told, after tests, to call another number to have someone come out and check the line. Once I called the other number (in both cases) I was told right away that there is no issue and no service is needed.
It's working slower than usual and goes out every few minutes when it's raining.
Not sure what to do - last time i had a phone line issue it took a letter to Corporate to get it resolved...

  • Please help with this slow internet

Can someone please help me with this slow internet. I have been looking on this forum for a while and have tried about everything I can do. I bought a new macbook, a new airport extreme base station, and have high speed internet. I can connect with a wire and it works great but wirelessly is slower than dial up. I am also not very good with computers so I am not sure how to do a lot of the things that many people say to do. I have comcast internet. If you need anymore information I will do my best to give it. Please help me fix this, remember it is the holiday season be a giver.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I believe there are several reasons for Leopard's networking issues.
I've heard it's worth a try to *turn off IPv6 in the OS network settings and your router* (if such an option exists in your router). IPv6 is the new addressing protocol which many consider to be overkill, seeing as it allows for approximately as many addresses as there are square centimeters of surface area on planet Earth (according to Wikipedia). It's also known to cause issues with Vista, which leads me to believe that the protocol is fundamentally flawed in some way.
Just a note, turning off IPv6 in the OS is easy, simply go to *System Preferences* > Network > select the *network type* you're using (i.e. Wi-fi, ethernet, FireWire). Then click the Advanced... button, go to the TCP/IP tab, and say *Configure IPv6: Off*.
Upgrading your router's firmware is worth a try, although such updates should only be performed through the ethernet connection, not over Wi-Fi (otherwise you could risk turning your router into a giant paperweight). You should also take note of your router settings prior to the firmware upgrade, because they will probably be reset with the upgrade.
Check your *Activity Monitor* in Applications under Utilities. Right-click (or control-click) on the *Activity Monitor* icon and tell the *Dock Icon* to *Show CPU Usage*. Keep an eye on the CPU usage in the dock and if it goes higher than expected, click on the icon and tell the window to *Show Active Processes*, and/or organize the processes by order of CPU usage.
Leopard doesn't have "nice" processes anymore and I find that some processes that like to use the network prevent other processes from using the network simultaneously. I think a lot of the network issues people are having are due to *Quick Look*, mdworker, and mds. These processes seem to like to go out on the network and make notes about every server available, however there doesn't seem to be any way to make these processes "nice" or kill them permanently without losing valuable system functions. It's interesting, at least, to see the probable cause of some of these networking problems, even if we can't fix them.
By now, I'm sure I sound like I'm babbling, but I hope at least some of this helps somebody out there.

  • Very Slow Internet Lion (This one is for the "Apple Network Team")

    hello,
    i'm joão from Portugal, Europe.
a couple of weekends ago i've updated three macs to Lion.
    2009 MacMini, 2007 White Macbook, 2010 iMac 21".
    problems? only with the iMac.
no connection drops but slow slow slow very slow internet. wired, speedtest marked 15Mbps download. wireless? 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 3Mbps, very unstable.
with Snow Leopard everything was ok.
tried every solution from every site and finally got it working flawlessly.
tried clean install instead of update.
    tried new dns servers.
    tried disabling ipv6.
tried remove wifi interface then add it again.
    tried service order.
tried PRAM, NVRAM, SMC, you name it, reset.
    tried removing preferences folder.
tried different browsers -> same symptoms.
    tried disable/enable airport.
    tried 10.7.1, 10.7.2, combo, delta.
    tried router's firmware update.
tried putting the computer closer to the router.
tried resetting the router, factory defaults.
    tried changing router's channel.
    tried disabling router's firewall.
tried watch router's event log, nothing suspicious.
    tried disabling router's wep password.
tried pinging a site for a couple of minutes, 2% packet loss.
tried hundreds of pages and forums...
during this attempts, macmini and macbook showed very good wireless internet speed.
iMac? slow, slow, slow, slow, slow, like seeing gmail's loading screen for more than one minute...
    again and again speedtest 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 1Mbps, 1Mbps, 0,3Mbps, 3Mbps.
discovered the pingtest utility in the same site and iMac's ping was grade C, grade F, grade D, with big values...mac mini and macbook were alwas grade B, with low pings (imagine 25ms on them vs. 138ms on the iMac).
i was fed up with the situation, every week tried and failed. iMac's owner was wanting to get his Lion money back and stick to Snow Leopard again. imagine recent Windows switchers thinking they went back to the same situations....
but then i found this website. and then realised macbook and macmini's wi-fi were both powered by a broadcom chipset. iMac's was powered by an Atheros chipset! did what the guy says on that site (replaced Lion's Atheros kernel driver by the one on Slow Leopard), and now everything is perfect, like on Snow Leopard. very good speed.
what a relief. thank you sir.
    hope it can help you.
hope it reachs apple's network developers...this is not good, you can't fail on something so simple and essential as decent wifi quality...

    humm...
i've clean installed one macbook (late 2008?) and one mac mini (early 2009) both with broadcom adapters and both of them were ok, after the install.
so, speedtest and pingtest are websites (speedtest.net and pingtest.net), both test your internet connection with the help of a 'local' server. it's useful, for instance, if you want see if two different computers connected to the same router have the same connection quality.
so if you can connect to some routers nicely and you have problems with your router, to me, it seems like you have some problems with the connection between your computer and the router.
an old router might bring you problems (there are some advices on the internet to change router's channel and so...), i would recommend to see if motorola has some sort of firmware update to your router. if you don't have complex router configurations, you might try to reset to factory defaults (search the manual). that, once, fixed a problem with a smc router and two macbooks (one, older, could connect easily, the other wouldn't connect to the router).
if that atheros driver trick, resolved your issue, that's strange
make sure broadcom isn't your ethernet adapter and not your wireless adapter
did you resetted your pram and smc? do you  have Mac OS 10.7.2?
i hope you can figure that out.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • MacBook Pro, Lion and slow internet

I upgraded to Lion yesterday to see if it resolves a persistent slow internet connectivity problem but unfortunately to no effect.
    Symptoms are:
slow connectivity / download on both wireless and wired connections.
Compared to my Alienware Windows laptop, the MacBook achieves less than 10% of the downoad and upload speed in either state
Speed has been checked on many sites including speedtest.net  - practically, connection is sluggish for both web and non-web internet use.
Ping to sites is identical on the Macbook Pro and my windows machine. There is no drop of ping or excessive variation.
The issue is independant of browser - Firefox, Safari, etc
I have a BT 40MB infinity connection at home and a 10MB uncontended leased line connection at work - the issue exists wired or wireless in both arenas
I can achieve download speeds of around 38 Mbps on my Alienware, wired, and 17 Mbps wireless. This compares to less than 2 Mbps on the Macbook Pro
The condition started under Snow Leopard about 4 weeks ago - unsure if it was after a routine upgrade
Following advice on these boards I have tried changing DNS to various open DNS, with no success
I have tried altering the mtu settings as directed, with no impact
The issue is therefore independant of router, internet provider ( I have access to three), wired or wireless connectivity. It also preexisted the Lion upgrade
I know there are other, similar threads on here, but my symptoms are different (no drop of ping, not just a wireless issue, multiple networks)
Any suggestions or recommendations would be welcome.
    Cheers

Thanks for advise but now resolved.
Being paranoid and from a Windows background I had put an anti-virus program on - Sophos. Frankly I had forgotten about it. Turing it off resulted in a 1000% improvement in my internet speed. Who would have known?
OK I should have guessed a little earlier.
    Cheers

  • IMail 5.2: How do I optimize it for use on a slow internet connection?

    Hi there,
I recently upgraded to Lion OS X v 10.7.3, and i like iMail 5.2 when I work from my office or home.
BUT, when I am working in the field I often have access to only glacially slow internet via an internet modem, and iMail takes FOREVER to download my messages. Way longer than my pre Lion version of iMail.
Is there a way to optimize iMail 5.2 in order to optimize for slow internet connections? For instance, to partially retrieve large messages? Or to somehow deactivate all the synchronizing and other Activity that goes on in the background?
    Many thanks,
    Hoyt

Use a web based email account like GMail or HushMail, because they are a website and people access their emails from many different machines (phones, computers, slow or fast connections) the site can optimize things better than a dumb mail server.
It's possible to auto-forward a copy of your present email accounts to have them on the web based accounts too, don't know exactly how to go about it, but many people elsewhere also have the same desire so it's obvious something like that is being used.

  • Time Capsule slow internet with Linksys router

I has issues with slow internet page loads. I have a Linksys WAG325N router connect to Telstra ADSL 2 with a Time Capsule. I use two wireless network one broadcasted from Linksys and the other wireless network from the Time Capsule. When i'm connected to the time capsule i had slow internet page loads and the Time Machine backups fail.
When connected to the wireless network from the Time Capsule i get 10% to 30% packet loss when i pinged the Linksys router and 0% packet loss when i pinged the Time Capsule.
I then connected to the Linksys router then i has packet loss with i pinged the Time Capsule and 0% loss when i pinged the Linksys.
I used the Airport Utility and changed the "Ethernet WAN Port" from automatic to "10 Mbps/Full Duplex".
This seem to fix the problem. I think there is some issue with the port speed negotiation between the Linksys and Time Capsule.

The same thing is happening to me, exactly. Although my top speed is lower than yours (I'm on FiOS). Unplug it for a second, and you're back to normal. Otherwise, it will slowly and inexorably degrade until you have something worse than dial-up.
This is completely unacceptable, and it's far too typical of the current state of Apple's quality control and support that there is no official acknowledgment of this screamingly obvious and annoying problem, which happens every single time I use my Time Capsule, which is to say every day, and no recommended fix.
Sometimes I feel as if I could really hate this company!

my mac pro seems to be running slower today than it was friday, i purchased it used an don't have disc or password

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It is not safe to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1a. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
1b. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    2. Partition and install OS X
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In thePartition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    3. Other issues
If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

  • Consistently slow internet

    Hi,
Ever since joing BT, I have had a very slow internet speed. I have the Unlimited 17Mbps Total Broadband, but even BT's speed test shows I'm getting just 0.47 at the most!
I have tried everything, changing channels, noise test, test plug, changing microfilter...they even sent a new home hub 3.0. Nothing works! I can't even watch any online video's with it have to stop and buffer every two or so seconds.
BT's technical support have been less than helpful! I work Monday-Friday 9-5. this just so happens to be the only time a BT engineer can visit. I cannot take a day off work, if I said to my boss I needed a day off because of my internet, I'd probably get fired.
This is really frustrating! any suggestions? The landlord who lives in my flat before me said he has no issues with the internet what so ever and he was with BT.

here is what it says after I plugged the filter into the test socket and it re connected to the internet, I also moved the router away from the window/wall. Do I need to restart the device?

  • Slow internet revisited since 10.4.4 update

    Hi all,
In a previous installment (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=302980&tstart=0) we had resolved slow internet on mac as compared to my XP PC.
After updating to 10.4.4 (tried both methods 1:auto update and 2:downloading 10.4.4 combo) my internet downloads are again always nearly half on the Mac as what I get on my PC. The uploads seem to be fairly identical.
Although Safari 2.0.3 is slower than 2.0.2 or Firefox 1.5 and Mozilla 1.7.12, this is not browser related (there's a maximum 10% differential between new safari and other browsers).
Been working on this for three days now without any luck. BandwidthTuner and bandwidthOptimizer do very little to improve results.
    Any help welcomed
TIA for your time and effort
    Dan

Fixed the problem by removing BroadbandOptimizer 1.5 and reinstalling Apple's BroadbandTuner.
Learned a lot about MTU's on Mac and XP machines along he way and how Linksys router was negotiating with both.
All is well with Mac now at around 4266 kbps while XP machines reaches about 4067 kbps.
Thanks for reading my post anyway!
