Tiger to Leopard and new Mac...

Hey there,
So far I´m working with my Powerbook and Tiger installed but soon I´ll get a Macbook with Leopard.
Here it starts.... I´ve to get all of my files, settings and what ever over to the new Macbook.... What do I´ve to do? I´ve searched already for a threat like that but haven´t found one... Would be nice if anybody can help me.

YetiSL,
All of your preferences will be transferred to the new Mac. In fact, everything in your HOME folder. If you use the "Migration Assistant" correctly (read the prompts carefully, and make your choices only after thinking about them), you might not even notice that you have migrated to a new machine.
Applications get transferred too, but there are some that will need to be reinstalled (the Migration Assistant can't know about every file associated with every application you might currently have installed). In any case, you will want to move to the Universal Binary versions of these applications anyway, so this is not a big deal.

You'll need to provide some more information .... what current mac mini do you have? Click on the apple in the left corner of the menu bar, click about this mac, and what does it say for processor, memory, and os x version?
When you say you have no DVD, do you have the mac mini server or is the DVD broken?
You can't do anything with 10.6 Snow Leopard on a PowerPC mini, however, if it is an Intel-based mini, you could probably hook up the systems in target disk mode to install 10.6.

    Niel...
I installed Leopard 10.5.6 and then it upgraded to 10.5.8, when I installed it I had the old info saved to a "previous systems" folder, where most of my artwork, etc. were saved, I have a one terabyte Lacie backup that unfortunately did not work as it was intended...it saved the new info and not the old. I did look into the system preferences folder and found the classic file, of course it wouldn't launch...but I have the old G 5 startup discs and will try to do it as you stated. I will try also to move it out of the previous folders file to my hard drive and see how that works.

  • I have upgraded from tiger to leopard and seem to have lost Photoshop 7.0. how do i retrieve it?

I have upgraded from tiger to leopard and seem to have lost Photoshop 7.0. Is it possible to retrieve it

Photoshop 7.0 only goes as far as 10.4.11
If you have a drive, you can put 10.4.11 on it or a partition of it
    and save some money.
I am not convinced the upgrade is worth it,
but I just do simple things.

  • Help - upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard AND new larger hard drive, MBP

    Howdy!
My iPhone has finally demanded that I upgrade my MBP from Tiger. And as if by coincidence, my now puny 100GB internal drive is packed full with less than a gig free most of the time. (10% free is the MINIMUM free allowance, I know!!) I run old copies of Adobe CS2, Quark, Quickbooks, Microsoft Office... would love to keep them working without purchasing upgrades, but probably isn't a realistic hope. None of it is mission critical at this point.
So I've purchased the $29 Snow Leopard DVD (from a reseller - it says CPU Drop-In DVD Version 10.6 on the disk), and a new 750GB internal drive (same reseller - The drive is a 2.5" SATA 5400RPM 8MB-Buffer Hard Drive (9MM Slim) (RoHS Green Friendly)), to get with the times.
    My other resources include:
    - two 1TB LaCie external drives with FW and USB2 ports
    - one other LaCie external drive - I think 360GB?
    - Retrospect 5.0 (most of my backups are encrypted Retrospect files on those three LaCie external drives, but there's some room on them)
    - a $22 USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE adapter with AC power, to access whatever laptop drive might be without an enclosure temporarily
    - a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner software
    - I just ordered an upgrade to my ancient (OS9) copy of DiskWarrior
    - A monster UPS battery backup and line conditioner that everything plugs into for this process
It has been a long time since I've DIY'd any undertaking this complex, and I'm looking for advice on what to do first, how to go about this.
    Here's my setup:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP11.0055.B08
    SMC Version: 1.2f10
I'm guessing I should do it like this, PLEASE EDIT or make suggestions or tell me what I forgot to do before I do it!!
    1. Back up everything to at least two external locations! Also, make a bootable copy of my current internal drive in its own volume, to at least one external drive that is formatted in HFS+ GUID partition style, with Carbon Copy Cloner (would Retrospect work well for this instead?).
    2. Free up at least 20GB on the current internal drive (100GB). Hopefully 30GB.
    3. Run Disk Utility on the current internal drive. Fix any problems. (Should I hit it with DiskWarrior instead?)
    4. Format the new 750GB drive to HFS+, GUID partitions. (How long will that take? Can I do it with the USB-SATA cable adapter, sitting on my desk, or does it have to be in an enclosure? The adapter has AC power)
    5. Run Disk Utility (or DiskWarrior?) on the new internal drive in its temporarily external position. Fix any problems.
    6. Boot off the Snow Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD and install onto both drives. (Will this version of the DVD I have wipe all files when it installs to a disk???)
    7. See how they run. Boot off the old 100GB internal drive, boot off the new to-be-internal 750GB drive. Panic if it's not going well.
    8. If the current internal 100GB drive is rocking Snow Leopard and my familiar files and apps seem somewhat functional, use Carbon Copy Cloner to recreate the volume on the new larger drive. Then swap the drives physically. (Links to good step-by-step instructions on this part would be much appreciated here!!)
    9. If the Snow Leopard DVD overwrote or snuffed out my familiar files and apps on the old internal drive, sigh deeply, then swap the drives physically. Use CCC (or Retrospect? or Migration Assistant?) to fetch my junk from the old internal drive's backup and plunk it on the new bigger internal drive (now installed).
    10. See how it runs. Shake my fist at the sky over the planned obsolescence of technology paired with the seductive power of my iPhone. Grumpily upgrade the software that I actually create income with.
Please help! I am just faking it here based on a few message boards I've read. Will this actually work properly?
    Thanks!

Howdy slowpoke43, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Please help! I am just faking it here based on a few message boards I've read. Will this actually work properly?
LOL, if your faking it you're the best!
    1. Yes, absolutely... no CCC would be best in my experience/opinion.
    2. Yes, the more he better... Free Space is no longer our Free Space, but OSX's.
    3. Indeed, & if you have the correct version of DW, do that.
    4. Yes, not long, A/C power is great.
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Thanks to Pondini, Formatting,  Partitioning, Verifying,  and  Repairing  Disks...
    http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html
    6. Yes, boot off the 10.6 DVD, & no Snow Leopard does by default what we used to call an Archive & Install, saves & updates all your info, APPs, Music, etc., it may quarantine a few things or not but will tell you.
    7. Absolutely, but Panic won't be needed with your great preparation & Bootable Backups!
    8. Not quite sure I understand, but run SL for a few days before you do anything.
    9. Yeah, but again with you doing everything right from the gitgo, I can't picture that happening.
    10. Yes indeed, the hangup with yours is that it only holds 2GB of RAM... a pain in 10.5 & up IME.
Again let me say... GONGRATS, I've never ever seen anybody so well prepared & informed despite your diffidence!

  • Downgrading to Tiger from Leopard on a mac mini 2.0ghz

I just purchased a mac mini 2.0ghz that came with Leopard.
Since I am relatively new to the MAC world, I assumed that I could immediately replace Leopard with Tiger on the HD using a set of mac mini install discs I had previously purchased on eBay (I'm doing this because this mini was going to be used exclusively to run ProTools - which isn't Leopard compatible)
From the little bit I've read, it looks like I may have made a $800 mistake. Most places are saying that it it absolutely impossible to downgrade from Leopard to Tiger on this late model.
Is that really true? I just find it so hard to believe that the hardware and software are so tied together that you can't ever go 'backward' even if you want to.
Could someone please state clearly once and for all if there is any possible way to downgrade or do I need to throw my new mac mini in the proverbial trash can and chalk this one up for the experience?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This issue was raised by another poster very recently (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1497891&tstart=0). Typically Macs cannot be booted from MacOS versions which predated the release of the hardware, or subsequent firmware update perhaps, but since Leopard was not released until after the current Core 2 Duo minis, it goes without saying that at least some of these systems did in fact have Tiger installed.
If Apple have made no hardware or firmware changes to the mini (and it's a big if, because typically that information is not made available), then Tiger should install and run fine on your system, proving only that the Tiger installer you have is actually from a 'late 2007' Intel mini.
The only way you'll know is to insert the Tiger installer you have, and boot the system holding the C key down (you will need a wired USB keyboard which is NOT one of the new aluminium type). If the system boots, then you should be able to do an install. Bear in mind that you will almost certainly get an error stating you cannot install that version of MacOS on the system because it will detect that you have a later version of MacOS already installed than on the install disk. That's normal. You can get around that by clicking the 'options' button on the installer and selecting 'erase and install', which wipes the hard drive and installs MacOS.
If the system will not boot from the Tiger install disk, then in effect that would confirm that you will not be able to regress the macOS version - at least not by any conventional means. There are always some who investigate and find ways to work around some of these limitations, so there may be an unofficial and unsupported workaround out there, but there would be no way to know how stable it would be, and whether you would be able to successfully update it.

  • Uninstall Leopard from new Mac Pro

Got a brand spankin new Mac Pro at work which was thrilling until it became obvious that nothing works with Leopard (which is what came on the Mac). Too many of our vital apps won't work with Leopard (read Adobe CS2) and the boss isn't prepared to update everything to be compatible with Leopard, plus it's not even possible to update some of them.
So what is the least painful way to get Tiger on this computer?
We don't own an external drive.

    Hello,
Unless you have a copy of Tiger for Intel, you cannot do it. The "off the shelf" version of tiger is for the PowerPC. If you can get ahold of a Mac Pro Tiger reinstall DVD set, then you could try to do an erase and install of tiger. I am not sure if you are going to see any issues or not with Tiger on the new hardware. I would guess not, but you never know.
Ebay might be a good place to look for a mac pro reinstall dvd.
Just pop in the dvd, press and hold "C" before the computer chimes and it should boot to the CD, after that it is as easy as apple.

  • Can I install leopard on new mac pro intel machine

This machine came with Snow leopard on it but it is conflicting with a USB 3.0 card I have been trying to install.
I THINK it is conflicting because I have a similar card on a 2009  Mac Pro intel,
running Leopard and I have not had one issue since installing IT, many months ago.
So I thought I would put in a new HD (larger 2TB) and start a fresh install and go down to the Leopard so the USB 3.0 PCI card will work!
When I do the reboot to instal from the disc, it just sits on a grey screen for 15 min before I gave up.
I replaced the Leopard disc with a Snow Leopard disc and the boot from disc went as normal.
    So..........

    Like I said, issues.

  • Downgrade to Leopard on new mac mini

I just got my new mac mini two weeks ago, and I've had enough of Snow Leopard, it's cack! Is it possible to downgrade to Leopard on the new system? it had SL pre-installed. I've put a Leopard retail disc in, but nothing is happening, it' been over an hour or so.

It is possible, I have done it on multiple occasions.
First, back up your files. Anything you want to keep. Then, insert your leopard install CD and shut down the computer. Boot the computer while holding "C". It should boot either into an installer program, or into OSX. Follow the instructions that pertain to your situation.
    INSTALLER PROGRAM:
Open the "Utilities" menu in your menu bar and click on "Disk Utility". Select your hard drive in the sidebar. Be sure to select something like "180gb WDC...", not "Macintosh HD". Then, go to the "Erase tab. Set the format to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", and the name to "Macintosh HD". Click Erase. After you have done that, reboot and hold "C" on boot. Install Mac OSX as normal.
    OSX:
Go to /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and open the application.
This should work and you will have downgraded to leopard. I'm thinking of doing the same after some of my software stopped working.

  • Trying to Time Machine from Leopard to new mac Snow L

I just got a new MacBook Pro 10.6.3 and am trying to restore via Time Machine from my current 10.5.8. I just waited 2 hours "Copying Volumes" but nothing happened.
I must be missing something simple but I can't find it.
    thanks
    brian

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
If you mean you're doing a full system restore, that's not going to work. A new Mac that came with Snow Leopard cannot run Leopard.
You'll need to boot up from the Snow Leopard Install disc that came with your new Mac. Select your language, then from the menubar, select Utilities, then +Disk Utility+ and reformat your internal HD. See the yellow box in #1 of [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html]. Use the GUID *Partition Map Scheme* and +Mac OS Extended+ Format. That will only take a few moments.
Then quit Disk Utility and install OSX.
When your Mac restarts, it will be just like it came from the factory. Use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer your data from your old Mac or it's backups, per [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html].

  • Update to Leopard/Buying new Mac

    Hi,
I would like to buy a Mac sometime before I start college in the fall, but since it is so close to the release of Leopard, I'm wondering when I should buy it. Should I wait till after the release of Leopard? Or is there something where Apple will give you a free update if you buy the computer nearer to the release date of leopard?
    Thanks in advance,
    Daniel

Hi Daniel, and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If it were me, I'd wait. If you purchase the Mac now, it will have Tiger pre-installed and you would have to upgrade to Leopard. And Apple being Apple, no one will know what the price will be for the upgrade until the day it hits the street. I honestly don't know if Apple would offer a free update if you buy so close to the release of Leopard... given their history, I kinda doubt it. One thing you can do is read more. The most recent issue of MacWorld magazine (July) in my mailbox today and there are several articles regarding Leopard.
If you buy a Mac now and being a student you qualify for a free iPod Nano! Read here: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore
    Anyway... that's my two cents.

  • Shes slow! Tiger or leopard and whats acl?

HI sorry guys but im not very techy so i dont know if ill explain myself properly here but here are my powerbooks details first anyway.
    Shes about 3 years old.
    Model Name: PowerBook G4 15"
    Model Identifier: PowerBook5,6
    Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
    Processor Speed: 1.67 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 1

    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.1f3
    System Memory
Free: fluctuates between 85 and 95 MB
    Wired: circ 96MB
    Active: circ 256MB
    Inactive: Circ 68MB
    Used: Circ 421MB
Supposedly overall ive 20 GB free.
Dont know if ye need all that but anyway my problems are as follows.
Everything from programs opening to scrolling down or even highlighting a menu is painfully slow.Im seeing the beach ball constantly.
I cant open anything while burning a disc.
I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard recently hoping it would help milder versions of these problems but its just become worse. Should i just go back to Tiger?
Ive run Disk Utility and usually it comes up with a few things that it fixes but today it came up with a list a mile long filled with lines of
ACL found but not expected on "System/Library/User Template/da.lproj/Library/Audio".
ACL found but not expected on "System/Library/User Template/ko.lproj/Library/Fonts".
ACL found but not expected on "System/Library/User Template/zh_TW.lproj/Public".
ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities".
ACL found but not expected on "Applications".
for example. Someone said i could have a virus! Is that possible on a mac?!
    Any advice would be great!
    Thanks guys.
    Gemma.

Hi, Gemma. You can ignore all the ACL messages, according to this Apple article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
It has nothing to do with a virus.
Your computer (which is Aluminum, not Titanium) has the bare minimum RAM for Leopard, and that's hard on performance. If you had performance issues while you were still running Tiger, upgrading to Leopard (which requires twice as much RAM) was not the way to resolve them.
Have a look at these two FAQ articles and try the tips provided in them:

  • Clean Install of Tiger or Leopard on PPC Mac Mini?

I have an older PPC G4 Mac Mini (the last one Apple made before they went Intel).
Earlier this year I bought an iMac and transferred everything of interest from the Mini to the iMac. I would now like to wipe-clean the Mini and re-purpose it.
So, my question is in 2 parts:
    1) The iMac came with OSX Leopard and I purchased (and installed) OSX Snow Leopard. Can I use the OSX Leopard disc that came with the iMac to install Leopard on the PPC Mac Mini?
    2) If I can technically do #1, would I want to? My think is that the OSX Tiger that came with the Mini is a PPC binary while the OSX Leopard would probably wind up being a universal binary. Would this adversely impact performance?

    1) The iMac came with OSX Leopard and I purchased (and installed) OSX Snow Leopard. Can I use the OSX Leopard disc that came with the iMac to install Leopard on the PPC Mac Mini?
No. The copy of Mac OS X that came with the iMac is licensed only for use with that system, even though you've upgraded to Snow Leopard.
In addition, it's probably only going to work on an Intel-based Mac and won't even install on your PPC mini. The code may be universal but the installer is probably written to only work with the iMac the disk came with.
If you want Leopard on the PPC mini, you need to purchase a retail copy of Leopard. There should be no performance impact; in fact you may find that Leopard runs a bit faster than Tiger. Leopard will take up a bit more space on the hard drive, though, than did Tiger.
    Regards.

  • IPhoto lost after leopard installation- new Mac user needs your help!!

First, let me state: BRAND NEW MAC USER- BEWARE!
Just got a new mac for Christmas (refurbished). It came with iPhoto. My first call was to technical support about issues installing Leopard. After we resolved those problems, iPhoto was gone (as well as several other less essential things like checkers, etc). Since I installed Leopard, do I now need to repurchase iLife or iPhoto? iPhoto was the real reason we bought the system- I'm dying to use it but it has vanished. I know so many people have posted questions about similar issues but they all seemed to have existing libraries that aren't working correctly. So forgive me if this is a repeat questions but I'd really appreciate the help. Take pity on a very new and very lost user... Thank you!

You need to re-install iPhoto from the system restore disks that came with your Mac. Choose to install the bundled applications only.
    Regards

  • Snow Leopard and new HD

So I have an 08 MacBook..
I bought snow leopard and it wouldn't install..
I took it to apple and they said it was because my HD is going bad.
So I bought a new HD and now I am wondering..
Will the snow leopard disk work?
Because it is the upgrade disk would I need my original disk?
Another I was wondering is if I would be able to use my sisters disk.. She bought a MacBook about 2 months ago and it came with snow leopard.
    Thanks for any help!!

If you bought the Snow Leopard disk as a retail disk from Apple, it will do a clean install - you don't need to use it as an upgrade. Once the HD is properly installed, you should be able to boot from the DVD, run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, format the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then continue with the install.
Your sister's Macbook disks are actually less likely to work, since Mac-specific install disks don't usually work on other models.
