Tiger to Leopard... Need to re-install Windows Partition?

Hi everyone,
I'm running Tiger right now and I am going to buy Leopard soon. Judging from all the problems people are having. I have decided I am going to do an Erase and Install. However, I'm running Boot Camp under Tiger right now. If I do an Erase and Install, will that effect my current Boot Camp partition? Do I need to re-install Windows again or will Leopard see that its a separate partition and leave it in tack?
Thanks

Erase and install will not touch the Windows partition.

I deleted Parallels from from mac book pro a few months ago using the app delete program. I now want to install Suns Virtual Box on my mac and wondering to I need to re-install windows or is it still somewhere on my mac?
    Thanks guys for the help...

    Hi,
look inside your /User/Library/Parallels folder if the .hdd file that is your Parallels Windows VM is still present.
To my knowledge the uninstall of Parallels does not delete it.
Whether or not VirtualBox can use is for import is beyond my knowledge.

  • Reinstalling Leopard without removing or changing windows partition

I am giving my mom my iMac and I would like to remove all my files and applications, I think the best way to do this is to reinstall Leopard but I need to keep the windows partition intact. The problem is that I no longer have the Windows install disc (I do have the serial number though).
    How do I reinstall Leopard?

Ok, thanks Niel. I also found an answer here http://www.brighthub.com/computing/mac-platform/articles/48174.aspx except I held option instead of c

  • Tiger to Leopard upgrade - will I lose my partitions?

I've been reading through the forums and can't find anything specific to this, so...
I'm finally going to move up to Leopard. If I weren't worried about the downtime, I'd go for a clean install. Instead, I'd like to do the archive and install, but retain as much as possible.
My hard drive has three partitions. I had read someone claiming that they did an upgrade (I don't know how they did it) and they lost their partitions and everything in them. I'm backing them up now, but I'd like to know if this is a real concern. And if I lost my partitions, wouldn't everything on the hard drive be at risk?
I have fresh backups, but I really don't want to go through the headache of reinstalling everything.
    I'm on a Power Mac G5 Quad running 10.4.11.
Any other thoughts and concerns I should be aware of would be greatly appreciated.

    Ah, good plan!
I had also read that Tiger and Leopard handle (or read or create) partitions differently, and so I'm worried about some conflict of some sort.
Not that I'm aware of. If any of those partitions are MBR, for running Windoze via Boot Camp, that may be a possibility (I don't do Windoze). If nobody posts anything here, you might try the Boot Camp forum, at: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237
I've also read of some people's computers not being able to read or recognize their Western Digital external drives after the upgrade. One of mine is WD.
A lot of folks seem to have trouble with WDs, others don't. Yours might not be compatible with Leopard; check with WD to see if there are updates for yours.

For windows, first step ensure the services got created.
Start/Run/services.msc and click on the Standard tab (for slightly less clutter).
There should be 4 or 5 oracle entries, only two matter. The database instance service, ...ServiceXE and the listener ...TNSListener the others are not relevant for an XE install.
If the user that ran the installer program is not in the local administrators group, as stated in the install requirements documentation, more than likely the services did not get set up and the database won't exist.
If the services are there, try connecting and check the instance status. In a command box (Start/Run/cmd):
    sqlplus /nolog
    connect system
Password: <the system password entered in installer dialog ... >
    ... Connected.
    select status from v$instance;
    ... OPEN ...
If you get that far, might be something not quite right with the networking configuration, several things can prevent the Apex web pages (http://...:8080...) from working.
As far as your configuration files, the client (tnsnames.ora) has a different value for the host than your listener.ora. So one, or both, of those could be incorrect. Check the command box hostname output, ipconfig /all, a few things might need adjustment.
The tnsnames.ora only matters for making sqlnet connections via a tnsalias. The tnsalias could be anywhere, including on your local hostname. To use a tnsalias, add it to the a connect after the '@' symbol, i.e. connect system@xe to get a connection to your XE specified in the tnsnames.ora file.
If you want to change the listener configuration, the first thing to do is stop the listener, then make adjustments in the listener.ora, start the listener, and sqlplus ... connect system .... alter system register; to get the instance registered with the listener.

Hello and good afternoon guys. I'm on the brink of killing my Mac PPC. Here are my specs before i start to blabber:

I had leopard 10.5.8 installed before but i downgraded to Tiger to fix some problem with my corrupt OS now when i try to upgrade to my 10.5.2 Leopard DVD after setup it gives me a "This software OSX cannot be installed on this computer" error.

Hi SaintPrado, and welcome to the forums!
At this point I think you should get Applejack...

    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.
Also, Get Temperature Monitor - 4.51 to see if it's heat related...

  • Need to Re-install Windows on Mac with boot camp

I purchased a Mac Pro from someone about 6 months ago that already had a 2nd drive with Boot Camp and Windows XP Pro running on it. Today for the first time when I booted into Windows, I got an error message saying that I "may be a victim of software counterfiting" and that my version of Windows is not an authorized version in my region.
I have an a genuine Windows XP Pro disc with seriel that I want to now re-install over the bad version. The problem is when I try to run the CD for install, I get an error message stating that I cannot install from the CD because the version of Windows I am currently running is newer than that on the CD.
So my question is, how do I uninstall the bad version of Windows and re-install the version off the CD? I know I will lose my files and programs but everything is backed up and I will reinstall everything when I get back up and running.
    Thanks for the help!!

You can format from Windows CD if that is what you mean by "windows side."
Updates are usually done while boot in the OS you want to 'upgrade' while custom is only done booted from other media.
With a Mac Pro you could easily install in many different ways than if you only had a laptop or imac.
But you can't "pick yourself up by your own bootstraps."
I don't even like upgrade of SL while booted in Mac OS.
If it was my Mac I'd install Windows 7 and make better use of your hardware and the performance afforded.

  • Please help! Need to re-install windows under boot camp

    Hi,
My windows (in boot camp) is not booting but I have many software licenses on there and cannot afford to wipe windows off.
I am hoping I can re install windows over the top of the current windows without losing my applications/licenses with boot camp but am not confident enough that a: re-installing windows wont mess up the mac osx and b: I cannot even see an option in the boot camp assistant which offer me the option.
Has anybody esle ever had to re-install windows over an existing installation and managed to do so without losing applications etc?
Thanks for any help on this.

  • If I reinstall leopard will I lose my windows partition?

I am new to mac, and this may be a silly question. I want to reinstall leopard, but I am afraid that in this case my windows partition would be erased. If I reinstall leopard choosing "archive and install", will my windows partition be damaged?

Just one more question, is there any option to copy my existing applications and data to the "previous system" folder WITHOUT keeping my network preferences?
No. The options you see are the only ones available.

  • Startup manager doesnt show up after installing windows partition

I partitioned my imac and installed Windows.
After installation of Windows, It no more operates the options key. My computer starts automatically with Windows, and have no choice to switch between operating systems. it is impossible that i have formatted all disc since I am sure that I partitioned 700 gb of space for OSX, and 299 gb for Windows.
    Why is this happening?

    Hi lindaa_07,
The Startup Manager should show up when depressing the Option key on your keyboard no matter what operating system(s) is installed. One possibility comes to mind - is this an Apple keyboard and is it directly connected to the iMac? Some other keyboards may not function in a way that brings up the startup manager. See this article for reference -
Mac doesn't start up from disc - Apple Support
You may also wish to reset your iMac's NVRAM. See how to do this from this article -
How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
    Specifically -
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R.
    Turn on your Mac.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.
Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM, you may need to reconfigure settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Need help with installing Windows for the bar exam

I need to retake the bar exam in Feb 2011 and I've decided to switch to typing. I am trying to figure out what Windows I need (the software says XP is fine but is that even available anymore)- so can someone walk me through this process? I've partioned my hard drive with the default 5GB but should it be more?
I'm looking at buying Windows- is XP okay or should I shell out for 7-i.e. is one more compatible with Macs?
And then finally, in the installation instructions they mention that I need my Mac OS disc for the process- is that the snow leopard disc or something else? My discs are in storage right now so should I wait until I get them before starting this process or can I get replacements if I accidentally threw them out in moving?
Sorry for all the questions, but well, I'm racing to get everything done and I want to make sure I don't crash my system halfway through the exam!

You don't need Boot Camp, but even XP will have a lot of stuff to update from after the install, and that takes temp space. Just as your Mac shows 5-10GB there is add'l hidden space used.
Apple's 'requirements' has gotten others in trouble and I was pretty sure it was more like 10GB. Plus a lot of XP discs are now SP3.
XP out of the box but connected to the net is just waiting for malware, average is 15 minutes to be infected. 7 is better and just in case you need it again.
System Builder can come in 32 or 64-bit but XP is 32-bit only.
VirtualBox by Oracle is a free VM.
1GB for one program actually seems like a lot, or is that RAM requirement?

  • Need To Re-Install Windows & iTunes.  Can I Save Playlists, Ratings, Etc?

Okay, here's the issue I'm about to face.
I am going to wipe my pc clean (reformat hard drive, reinstall Windows XP Pro, etc) and start over. Then I'll be downloading and installing iTunes once again.
I have over 11,000 songs, all rated (stars) and organized into playlists. I have over 200 playlists (by albums, by genres, etc) and all the info attached to each song.
Sounds simple, but HOW do I download and install iTunes so I can have it RETAIN all this information? The last time I upgraded iTunes (just a simple UPGRADE) it lost all this info and I had to listen to each song and re-rate them one by one.
Can anyone tell me how to go about doing this? I don't want to lose this info, it'd drive me crazy. Email [email protected] with any help. Thank you SO so much!!

Deauthorize iTunes on your PC before you reformat.
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive
That article explains what you need to do. The important file that holds ratings, play counts, etc is named
    iTunesLibrary.itl
Another thing you need to know is the paths to the music files have to be the exact same thing after you reformat. So if all your music is on an external hard drive named F:, that exHD still has to be named F: after you reformat.
If it's named E: or G: iTunes won't be able to find anything.

  • Need help in installing windows 7 on macbook pro 10.5.2

    Hello friends,
yesterday i bought a original copy of windows 7 home basic version. I created a new partition using bootcamp and when I am inserting the new DVD of windows 7..its giving error
"Installer disk could not be found"
And after few seconds the DVD ejects automatically...
I know you will say that my dvd is not working properly...But all other dvd i tested after that and its working fine.
Even the new windows 7 dvd is working fine on my dads laptop...
Plz try to help me out..

If you follow the suggestion in the error message, it should let you install Bootcamp/Windows.
The error message is because you disk is badly fragmented and BCA cannot get the files moved to free up enough contiguous disk space for the new partition.
Try Disk Utility Verify/Repair first. If that does not work, back up you Mac to a Time Machine (or your favorite backup tool), erase the internal drive and restore from this backup.

  • Need help with installing Windows XP on Satellite A60

I have toshiba satellite A60 and I need to know steps of reformatting the hard drive and installing Winxp. what do i need and how?
also..how can i save all the files and emails on Microsoft outlook? i'm not well experienced with this.

    Hi,
the installation of XP is very simple. You just have to put the CD in and start the installation, the installation wizard is guiding you through the whole process. A little advice: when it comes to partition the drive, you should delete the old partition, create a new one and format it with ntfs. Dont worry the installation wizard will guide you very detailed trough that process so it will go very easily.
    Regarding your backup:
Thats my way to backup my files:
I have a external USB-HDD drive and I put all my files on it so I can copy them back after I install a new system. To save your outlook you can check this site:
    http://www.sitedeveloper.ws/tutorials/outlook.htm
They describe very nice how to backup you outlook.
    Good luck
