How long should it take a well-qualified server admin to migrate from Tiger to Lion...
For a small company, if the Tiger server is running on a G4 Tower:
    -Roughly 500GB in user files
-Data resides on old-school ATA drives
    -OD Master - Kerberized
    -AFP
    -Mobile Homes
    -DHCP
    -DNS (for 2 domains)
    -FTP
    -iChat
    -Mail (non SSL)
    -NetBoot
    -Print Server
    -SWUPD
    -VPN
    -Hosting website using MySQL
    -User & Computer Management
    Considerations/Hurdles/Challenges:
-Tossing old G4 into garbage, upgrading Mini client to Snow Leopard, adding Lion iMac client to the LAN
-Fresh OS installs on the Mini and iMac
-Upgrading from CAT5 to CATE on the LAN (not it the walls - just loose cables)
-All new hardware must be sourced out (take some time to price compare)
-Must find a way to transfer data from ATA drives to SATA drives or Lion Server
-Company must not have any email downtime (MX Records to be modified on DNS Providers site)
-Servers hostname goes from "companyserver.company.com" to "server.company.com"
    -ISP blocks some SMTP ports
-DNS Provider doesn't support TSL/SSL SMTP
-Implementing a switch into the network
-Implementing a new router (for firewall and NAT) from ISP
    Upgrading to Lion Mini Server
    -All the same services
    -Using SSL
-Implementing Mobile Device Enrolment and Deployment
That should just about cover it. I'll add any other details/hurdles as they come to mind.
Can you guys give me your best guesstimate as to how many hours you think this job should take? I'd appreciate any feedback as to how long you guys think it'd take you to make this transition. I'm trying to plan, and we're going to be down-and-out, the boss NEEDS to know for how long.!
    Thanks in advance guys!

It's about a gigabyte, so if you have a slow connection, it might take some time.
But - you shouldn't be getting the beach ball - that's a different thing.
Can you do open Activity Monitor, or is it stuck completely?

  • Migrate files tiger to lion

I need help! I have an old Macbook that I've been using for several years and just picked up a new Macbook Air. I've never bothered to update the OS on the old one, so I'm still running Tiger 10.4.11 How can I transfer my applications & files from my old one to the new system. Migration Assistant does not work. I've been looking at multiple postings for answers, but it's now day 3 and I'm ready to pack up the new one and send it back. Worst case scenario - is it better to just take both computers to a Mac retailer and have them sort it out for me? I would prefer to learn and do it myself, but am frustrated enough now to pay someone else to do it.
    HELP!!!

If you haven't had this done yet, here is a way if you use Time Machine.
Back up everything from your Tiger Mac onto your Time Machine.
Plug it into your new Mac running Lion, open up migration assistant, you should be able to transfer everything from the time machine.
It's actually faster then using your network, I did Lion to Lion migration (over the network) and it took longer than Tiger to Lion migration using Time Machine.

  • Moving from OS Tiger to Lion

I understand from various threads that I cannot upgrade from Tiger to Lion.  Dos that mean that I will need to reformat the disk and reinsgtall all software I have ?
To avoid this painful process (in which I could loose all my personal settings) is there a new Lion version that will be available that will recognise Tiger and upgrade on top of it ?

All Xeon models - all Mac Pros. There is a nice page on Lion requirements and how to buy.
Asked of course multiple times even, can you believe that? !!
Apple sells Lion + SL on USB thumb drive for $70 to get you there.
Or buy 10.6.3 DVD $30 and then buy Lion from AppStore. I prefer the DVD approach.
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
    http://www.apple.com/support/lion
And of course the OS Lion Community...
There is NO support for PowerPC, Rosetta, so any programs, drivers, plug-ins etc check on with app from Roaring Apps, look at System Profile Applications for PPC, also Activity Monitor if you want.
Then, I always and strongly with ANY new OS suggest a new drive and leave the old as is for backup and to then import via Setup Assistant, and never upgrade Lion over older (and only supports doing so over 10.6.8+). When you are happy after a month, then clone Lion over your old system drive for backup purpose.
    Same with any disk arrays.

  • I updated OS from tiger to lion.. my Dvd not functioning .. HELP--!!!

Recently i updated to os lion and after i di that my dvd drive stop functioning... anyone help please... i read it might be a software problem.. anyone knows what to do???? Thanks in advance.....

One of the reasons a brody and I are asking about "how you obtained Lion" is that you need to have the App Store in order to download it.  The App Store is only available in Snow Leopard.  The title of your thread states "I updated OS from Tiger to Lion".  There is no way to download Lion from within Tiger (or Leopard for that matter).  If you obtained Lion via other means, you may have an early build which may exhibit problems not found in the released version.
When you say your DVD drive is not working... Is it with one specific DVD, or have you tried other DVDs and they are also not working?
It sounds as though you have successfully installed Lion, but now your DVD drive is having problems.  Do you currently have Lion installed and working?

how to update tiger to lion

It appears that many of the problems with the HDMI are the "monitors" that are being used. Samsung and Vizeo both DO NOT support a computer input on HDMI only VGA. There probably are others, manuals must be read to confirm compatability.
I strongly believe that the reason the 10.8.2 update was pulled is due to the fact (it happened to me) that the new Disk Utility creates a Fusion drive if aftermarket SSDs are added to the system. I think Apple wants this propriatary Fusion Drive to be something you buy from them not a "homebrew" for lots less money.

  • Migration Assistant - Tiger to Lion?

I'm installing a new iMac for a client soon which currently has Snow Leopard on it.  I'd like to upgrade them to Lion, but before I do I want to make sure that I won't run into any problems with the Migration Assistant.  I believe they are running Tiger on their current Mac... I know there was just a compatibility update for Snow Leopard, but will I run into any problems using it from Tiger to Lion?  How far back will Migration Assistant be compatible?

I'm attempting to do the same thing from an iMac G4 and I can assure you it does not have a Firewire port and it does run OS X Tiger. I cannot find out how to use Migration Assistant but I can assure you that you can connect your computers via a ethernet cable.
As posted several times here, you cannot use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant via network from Leopard or earlier to Lion.
But all iMac G4's came with either 1 or 2 F/W 400 ports:
iMac (Flat Panel), iMac (17-inch Flat Panel) - Technical Specifications
    iMac (17-inch 1Ghz) - Technical Specifications
iMac (USB 2.0) - Technical Specifications
You'll need a F/W 400 to F/W 800 adapter, or a cable with a F/W 400 plug at one end and a F/W 800 plug at the other.  Just so you know what they look like:  http://www.amazon.com/elago-FireWire-400-800-Adapter/dp/B002TF0ZDQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie =UTF8&qid=1312562370&sr=8-1
Or, make a "clone" backup of the G4 on an external  HD, with the Restore tab of Disk Utility (see #7 in Using Disk Utility), or CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, then connect it to your new Mac.

Where did it say that? If your computer meets the requirements you can install Snow Leopard and then install Lion via the Mac App store. They both cost $30

  • Cannot open old iPhoto library after updating from Tiger to Lion

I changed my Mac and now I am using Lion on MacBook Pro.
I am trying to open the iPhoto library that I used to have on my old PowerBook G4 with Tiger, but it does not work.
When I open the library, iPhoto says that the library needs to be updated and asking OK to continue. I press OK to continue and iPhoto starts to work though after hours (I tried to leave the mac to work for three days) nothing happens!
The library is very big, 39 GB!
    Any help?

    NowApple:
    Sounds like a damaged database.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Migrating from Tiger to Lion - Help!

I am trying to use the migration assistant from my old MacBook Pro with OS 10.4 (Tiger) to my new MacBook Pro with OS 10.7 (Lion). It says that I need to update my old MB's migration assistant software. Can I just connect the 2 MacBooks using firewire? Would that solve the problem?

I assume so! They should 'network' together, and then if you enable Personal File Share in Settings on your older MacBook, you should then be able to view the older MacBook's drive in your new MacBook's Finder window!
If this doesn't work, you can just set up 'file sharing' on your older MacBook, set your whole HDD as the shared folder, and copy things over via wi-fi.
There are a couple of solutions!

  • Transfer itunes to from tiger to lion

I have an old Mac Mini with a g4 processor running OSX Tiger. I recently bought a new Macbook Pro running Lion. I have itunes set up with different playlists on the old mac and would like to transfer some (not all) of these playlists to my new Macbook Pro. I don't want to have to sift through thousands of songs in my library to find the ones I want to transfer so I would lie to transfer the playlist directly from iTunes, Is this possible? If so, how. Or any other advice.
    Thanks

Copy the entire iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.  Once there, if playlists exists that you no longer way, delete those playlists.

  • Transfer iTunes Library from Tiger to Lion

What is the best method of transferring my Tiger iTunes library (9.2.1) to a different machine running Lion?  Both machines are on the same network and I have the Tiger disk shared so that I can connect to it from Lion.  Thanks.

I may have answered my own question.  I found the following article helpful for making the transfer using home sharing.

    Any other suggestions?  Thanks again.

I seem to be going round in circles . I had Leopard installed on my Notebook. I wiped my Hard drive and now only have Tiger software.( The Leopard pack was stolen from my car) I wish to upgrade to Lion but I don't know what other packs I need to do this.

To get more information about your computer, go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
