Tiger to Panther ok, reverse doesn't work

Hi, I can do a video chat perfectly when I initiate it from my Tiger PB (last version) to a Panther eMac (last version), but it doesn't work when the other party tries to initiate it with me. I get the invitation, I accept and then wait and wait and ... nothing is happening. Any idea?

Hi Jean,
Where are the two computers ?
Are they both on your Home LAN ?
What method of opening the ports in your Modem are you using ?

  • Under Tiger 10.4 Brightness Adjustment Doesn't Work, Powerbook 17"

After trying Leopard, I decided to go back to Tiger. After installing 10.4 on my Powerbook G4 17" 1.67ghz the brightness adjustment in the system preferences and the F1 F2 keys do not work. Brightness adjustment is not available even after running all the updates through 10.4.11. If I return to Leopard, the brightness adjustment works again. Any one have any ideas on how to fix it in 10.4? [I don't have the original restore disks]. Thanks.

Not certain, but PRAM or NVRAM resets might do it...

  • Re-install Tiger, Software Update, now Airport doesn't work

So, I just replaced the hard drive on my Dual USB iBook G3. I completed the installation, and everything was working great. Airport was showing my home network (unsecured, iknow) and I was able to connect to Software Update via the Airport.
First major download was the 10.4.8 combined update for PPC - after downloading it and restarting I lost Airport connectivity. Can't find my newtork, can't manually input IP address, etc.
Next, plugged into Ethernet and downloaded Airport (4.2 ?) and still nothing.
What's the deal? Airport was working before the updates, and now nothing. Other laptops at home are working wirelessly just fine, so it's not my ISP, connection, or router.
    Help!

Hi sockdaddy, welcome to Apple Discussions!
Click here to be taken to the Airport Troubleshooting kBase document.
It could be that you need a firmware update following the 10.4.8 update. Follow the steps in the above link, and post back with your results.
Another thing to try is the Mac OS Software update. Click on the Apple logo at the top left of screen while connected to the 'net, choose 'Software Update' and let the computer do the rest.
If all else fails, remove and re-seat the Airport card by following these instructions.
Let us know how you go.

  • Boot Camp doesn't work in Tiger

I just downloaded Boot Camp version 1.3 on my old Tiger MacBook Pro but it doesn't work. It says version is outdated. Is there newer versions and where can I download them? I tried to find 1.4, it seems like it doesn't exist.
    Thanks for the help

Yeah, I know. I can't believe that about Apple. If Microsoft came out with an update for Windows that was that mediocre and charged $129 for it, you'd never hear the end of it.
You're right, it's called Leopard...not service pack 5. Sorry, coming from the Windows world, I'm used to updates like that being called service packs.

  • Unix Command doesn't work in Tiger

    Hi,
I've got labs of eMacs that I'm finally upgrading to Tiger. My image seems to work fine, but I'm running into a weird quirk with my "Send Unix" commands via ARD. We're doing NWEA testing and LOVE the unix commands because we can login to machines, turn on TestTaker, login to TestTaker, and select the correct test (math or reading) and the right version of the test.
The script below works fine on a panther eMac.
    osascript
    tell application "System Events"
    keystroke "1" using command down
    delay 3.0
    keystroke ASCII character 31
    delay 2.0
    keystroke return
    keystroke "n" using command down
    end tell
On my Tiger machines, the command stops on the:
"Keystroke ASCII character 31" line (this should arrow down to next test version).
A report window comes up in ARD with this error message:
86:104: execution error: System Events got an error: 31 doesn't understand the ASCII character message. (-1708)
This used to work perfectly, but now I can't get ASCII 31 (or arrow down to work). The real killer is that other techs in my school district have eMacs running tiger with same commands that work (some have to arrow down 16 times to get to correct test version). The other commands (like command 1 and returns, command n) all work fine! Hate to have to touch 80 machines each day to select proper test version when we log in.
    Any Suggestions????

Try this form of the line:
    keystroke (ASCII character of 31)
That's worked for some people. Hope it works for you. If it doesn't work as given, try without the parentheses.
    Regards.

  • Mailscript doesn't work in Tiger

Hallo allemaal. (That's hello everybody, in Dutch...)
At my work, I used a combination 'rule/applescript' to send an autoreply e-mail to clients from a certain group from my addressbook. The applescript worked like a charm with Tiger but since I've been handed over an iMac with Leopard, the script doesn't work anymore. Now I'm a bit desperate cause I (& my clients) really got stuck on it...
Could someone of you, scriptexperts, check out this script and maybe 'fix it' so it 'll work in Leopard aswell?
    Thanks very much.

It looks like there is an issue with rules in Leopard mail. Other people, including myself are experiencing similar issues when trying to use rules to run applescript. Below, is just one of the posts that I've come across so far.

  • Installed Panther on Older iMac and Mail Doesn't Work Correctly

I installed panther on my son's iMac recently. I created a subaccount for him from my verizon dsl account. I made sure all the info was the same on my mail preferences as in his but we can't send or received anything. I keep getting a message to put in the password for the account and I do and it doesn't let me in, just the same message comes up again. I put his account into my mac's Mail program and it works fine, but on his it doesn't. All the info is the same - I've checked and checked his password and it doesn't work. I even put my account info onto his computer and I have the same password problems. Anybody?

    thank you now everything works

  • LaunchOnlyOnce key for launchd doesn't work in tiger?

I've been working on a project, and have used the LaunchOnlyOnce key in a launchagent in ~/Library/Launchagents.
This works fine in Leopard, but on Tiger it acts like LaunchOnlyOnce doesn't exist and spawns the process repeatedly.
Apples documentation on launchd mentions the LaunchOnlyOnce key and is dated 2004, well before Tiger was released. So is the date wrong?
Am I "barking up the wrong tree" here by trying to use launchd for this purpose?

Is that listed as a valid key in Tiger's man launchd.plist? I profess that it has been about a year since I have had Tiger, and while I'm far from being an "expert" in launchd, I have cobbled together a number of launchd jobs, and I don't recall that property list key being discussed in Tiger's man pages.
If it was listed in Tiger's man pages, then I would suggest that you have a look at your console log entries to see what happened around the time that the launchd event should have fired ‑‑ the console log will say things like "unrecognized key" or whatever.
As a sidenote, there used to be a property list key in Tiger called "Service Description." It's not there anymore, even though Leopard's man launchd.plist page is dated Sep 30 2004. And Leopard's man launchd.plist page notes that Tiger's launchd property list key "OnDemand" was deprecated in Leopard. So, I suspect that somebody just didn't update the date printed on the bottom of the man launchd.plist page, unless they knew that Leopard, which was released on 26 October 2007, nearly three years after the date printed on the Leopard launchd.plist man page, was going to deprecate that key.
So, bottom line: check Tiger's man launchd.plist page, not Leopard's, and if the LaunchOnlyOnce property list key is discussed there, then check your console log for clues as to why your launchd event is not firing.

  • If a Leopard binary doesn't work is it worth trying the Tiger one?

I obviously asked this question in the wrong forum (sorry) so let me try again here:
I'm using Lion and in trying to make the changeover from PC to Windows one of the programs I use has a Leopard compiled app that doesn't work (it installs but when I click on it it just flashes without running that I can see).  It appears there is a Tiger compiled version -- is it worth trying this version?
I know what you're saying to yourself -- why is he asking when he should just try it?  Which brings me to my next question -- how do I "uninstall" a program?  I went ahead and deleted an app in the applications folder, but that's probably not what I should have done.  Windows, of course, has an "uninstall" just like an install -- is there such a thing on the Mac and where would I find it?
Finally, is there some other way of running and/or installing an app to make it work in a different OS?  Again, from Windows I can sometimes run older apps by running them in a sort of compatibility mode (like running as XP in my Win 7 machine).  I can't see anything in OS X that allows this, but I'm pretty Mac stupid and perhaps that would solve my problem with this pesky program if I could run in Leopard mode.

Can't help with your issue, but suspect that if a Leopard version won't work, neither will a Tiger one. However, I do suggest that you start with these:

  • Many programs I used to use in Tiger doesn't work in Leopard

Here are the ones I've noticed have not been working or have errors:
    iMovie
    iChat
    Yahoo Messenger
    Adium
    VisualHub
There are probably like 10 more but I haven't seen it yet. Why are so many programs are acting like this. I was thinking it was becasuse it wasn't ugpraded enough but I did install the newer version and it doesn't work.

Well, haven't we had to deal with a slew of updates every two years?
And at least Vista x64 is probably more secure, supports EFI (UEFI 2.).
The same people that would need a Mac Pro (dual cpu, 8GB RAM, etc) would be looking at 64-bit.
Did not Apple tout the G5 from IBM as finally being a 64-bit system? But yes, even Adobe CS3 is still 32-bit and limited to 3.5GB of user space, which there are work arounds for.
One person I tried to help was using Maya but his version doesn't work with Leopard, and blames Apple and 10.5 it seems, rather than realize he needs to consider an 8-core system rather than 4-core, more memory, make better use of disk and RAID, and of course... upgrade software or... WAIT FOR MAYA AND 10.5.x to catch up to each other!
People assume you have to wait for SP1 for Windows, but think they should jump rigtht in, when we all have seen that X.3 is usually the first "sweet spot" in any release.

  • HP 3310 and wireless printing from Tiger - It doesn't work

I went through it with HP Support team but they are too bad to help me out.. I'm just hoping that I can find a solution here.
Basically I just bought this fantastic printer, using the USB cable it works perfectly.
If i try to use the built-in wireless connectivity, then I have some problems. If I try to print a test page from the HP printer utility then after few minutes the test page prints. But not right away like it does connecting the computer to the printer using a USB cable.
However if I try to print a page, any page from any application, then it doesn't work, it says Starting printing... and then it goes to Idle.
I have no idea what to do, I've tried to reinstall every single HP program but nothing.
I'm hoping on your solutions! Thanks!

i solved my problem ages ago... you just need to download the updated drivers and software from the hp website.. don't install from the cd.. and all works fine

  • Installer doesn't work after upgrading to 10.3.3

    Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.3.9. I bought the upgrade to 10.3.3 and installed it (with the upgrade feature, not the archive and install) and now when I try to open the .pkg file for the upgrade to 10.3.9, the installer doesn't work. It opens and a window comes up with a large "X" in the background, but the main dialog box is blank, the two buttons on the bottom right corner of the window are blank, and clicking them doesn't do anything. I know it's the installer because the same thing happens when I try to install other programs.
I can't use the software update feature because I can't get my mac to work with my DSL connection - but that's another story.
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Yep, that's the problem!
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
A Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to again purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.

Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.

  • Leopard, Tiger or Panther on a 667MHz, 1GB PowerBook G4

Firstly, heres my situation. I am a 17 year old student who just needs a fast reliable laptop which I can take around and do work on. I currently have Tiger installed and it runs fairly slowly, I am wondering if reinstalling it will solve my problem.
I have access to all OSX's and can borrow a external DVD drive to install them with. I am wondering which would be the most useful for my situation. Also, just wondering if Panther comes on a CD, so I don't have to borrow the external DVD Drive.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of each OSX. I realize Panther is the oldest and will probably run the fastest on this system, but I heard that Tiger was a great upgrade and still maintained the performance of Panther. And Leopard being the newest will probably be too much for my poor little PowerBook to handle, but will it run at all?
Also, how hard is it to get my hands on a processor upgrade for this? I wouldn't mind an upgrade to 1.5GHz or something similar. And how much would it cost?
    Thanks in advance, Nick.

Hi, Ronin. Your Powerbook doesn't meet the minimum system requirements for Leopard, and although you can install it anyway, it would run slowly and monopolize much more of your limited RAM than Tiger or Panther. I still run Panther on my Tibook because Tiger offered exactly nothing that I found even vaguely interesting, never mind essential. The only thing that will get me to upgrade again on this machine is some killer app (or killer new version of an app I already have) that requires Tiger. I won't upgrade to Leopard until my next new Mac, and even then I'll have to keep this machine to run Classic on: I have a couple of old apps I couldn't live without and can't upgrade. So I suggest either installing Panther or reinstalling Tiger, after wiping your hard drive clean.
No processor upgrades are available for your model.

  • Reinstalled 10.3.4, now date/time doesn't work or open

I had a hard drive failure, a company replaced my drive with a new one in my G4. The new hard drive works fine, they reinstalled 10.3.4 from my original disks, but the date/time doesn't work and I can't open that panel even.
So I just resinstalled from those disks again and it still didn't fix this problem.
Also my old password for installers doesn't work either, but it lets me bypass it.
    Any suggestions?
Should I just try upgrading to Tiger and see if that works?
    Thanks

Not sure what the problem is, however, before you go reinstalling or upgrading try this:
    1. Reset PRAM.
    2. a. From a cold start, boot from your installer disk holding down the "C" button. Go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility.
    b. Select your Mac OS X startup disk.
    c. Select the First Aid tab in the Disk Utility window.
    d. Select Repair Disk button in Main panel. If problems are found run again and again until no problems are reported.
    e. Select the Repair Disk Permissions button on the First Aid tab.
    f. After Repair Disk Permissions completes, Quit (Command-Q) Disk Utility.
    3. Update Software to 10.3.9 (Go to Apple Menu and select Software Update.
    Post back after these operations.
    Good luck.
