Tiger v panther on G4 ibook

esp for wireless connectivity (big troubles with verizon dsl).
wondering if upgrading helps with speed of machine in general as well as wifi stuff.
thanks

Wireless connectivity issues can happen because of a variety of issues, from setting the channel right, to whether or not interference robustness is on (sometimes turning it off improves things, while other times turning it on does), router firmware version, other 2.4 Ghz frequency emitters nearby, encryption standard used may not be the best programmed version on that router (though I'd stick to some form of 128 bit encryption), to whether or not the wires are loose and card inside the notebook are firmly seated. As such, you should try your wireless connection elsewhere and see if it is different in strength. That way you can tell if the issue is software or hardware related and internal or external.
I've not seen significant changes in Tiger's wireless capabilities over Panther's, though there is a wide range of reports of better to worse connectivity with 10.4.8. My iMac Intel Core 2 Duo has much better wireless reception than my iMac G5 right next to it. Yet others are reporting the same model has worse connectivity. Whether it is the wireless standard use I don't know. But I've written this FAQ* which may be helpful:

  • Installing Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger

Anyone help? I want to install Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger installed. I've used my iMac Panther disks to install, but although the iBook goes all through the installation process, it won't start up from Panther.

    Lyssa
Thanks for your reply. I suspected this might be the case but still hope there might be a way round it.
I want Panther on the iBook first because I prefer it to Tiger. Tiger has some annoying little features - for example, the fact that if you select a whole load of files and Get Info on them you get a separate window for each file - if you want to hide the extensions you have to tick the box in each separate window. In Panther you get a single window applying to all the files - neat! There are various other silly little things like this.
Second, the versions of Mail in Panther and Tiger are incompatible. If I save an email on the iBook (while away from home, for example) and want to transfer it to one of the mailboxes on my (Panther) iMac, I have to go through the following laborious process:
    1. Save the email on the iBook in Raw Message format. Copy it to the iMac (via a mobile hard drive).
    2. Create a temporary mailbox folder in Mail on the iMac. Close Mail.
    3. Go to Users ... Library/Mail/Mailboxes. Change the extension of the temporary folder from mbox to txt.
    4. Open it (it now opens as an ordinary folder).
    5. Copy the text of the email into the document called mbox.
    6. Close the folder, change its extension back to mbox.
    7. Open Mail again, move the email from the temporary folder into the folder where it belongs.
    8. Delete the temporary folder.
    Ridiculous or what?

  • Upgrade Safari 1.2 to 1.3.1 after downgrade from Tiger to Panther

I wished to restore performance to my G3 iBook by downgrading from Tiger to Panther, and have been successful with that and have restored all apps to Panther versions except for Safari. The downgrade (archive and install) left Safari 2.0 on my HD for some reason, which of course wouldn't launch under 10.3.9. I dragged Safari 2 to the trash, downloaded Safari 1.2 which installed fine. However when I try to upgrade now to 1.3.1, I am told by the installer that the software cannot be used with the disc volume (the system volume) I choose to install to.
(BTW, invoking Software Update says my software is all up to date, even though I'm only on Safari 1.2.)
I've seen the other threads which have suggested removing Safari pkg receipts from /library/receipts, but this hasn't helped me in this case; I can't find any thread that had a successful resolution yet. Anything else anyone can suggest? Many thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You can try using Pacifist to extract Safari from your install disk and install it. You may then be able to upgrade it more easily, although I can't promise that for sure.
Unless you are absolutely wedded to Safari, I find Camino to be at least as good (I think better) as Safari, and looks almost identical, so that there should not be much of a learning curve. I also use Firefox and especially like it for the measure of security it provides.

  • Mac OS X Tiger or Panther with wifi on a Wallstreet G3 Powerbook

    I have a G3 Wallstreet Powerbook with
    7Gb hard disk
    192Mb RAM
    400 MHz processor
    PCMCIA slot for card modem
    CD ROM only drive
    OS 9.2
I would like to try and put OS X Tiger on this machine and then put some sort of wi-fi card in it so that I can connect it to a wifi broadband router.
1 Will OS X Tiger work OK on this machine? Or would Panther (10.3.9) work better? I would prefer to install Tiger to Panther. Or would either or both just run SO slowly on this G3, that it just isn't worth it?
2 If one or the other will work, what wifi card should I get for the Wallstreet, and will this go in the PCMCIA slot, or deeper inside the powerbook somewhere? Can someone recommend an inexpensive card that works well?
3 If neither Tiger nor Panther will work, would it be possible to get a wifi card that will work with OS 9.2? Again, could someone recommend a card that works well with OS 9.2?
I have read somewhere that it may be necessary to install XPostFacto before installing OS X.
It would be helpful to know what of the above is possible and what not, and obtain clear step-by-step instructions from someone who understands the options far better than I do for the order I should do everything in. I don't wish to start spending money on the whole process, only to find further down the line that I can't achieve the end result ie using OS X and a wi-fi card.
The background is that I have a g5 iMac which will continue to be my computer of choice, but when I travel an up-to-date-as-possible G3 would be helpful.
    Thanks, Nick
    G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Panther requires built-in USB ports and Tiger requires both built-in USB and Firewire ports. The Wallstreet has neither. The installers will refuse to install on the computer.
You can use a freeware utility called XPostFacto to install Panther (don't know about Tiger) but how well it will work (or if it will even install) would be experimental at best. The Wallstreet lacks the horsepower for OS X.

  • Tiger install probs on G3 iBook

I've got a G3 600 iBook with 256 MB of RAM that I bought in late 2001. It of course came with OS9 and OSX installed and I've upgraded the OS over the years up through Tiger.
Yesterday, I decided to wipe it and start fresh. The original software will install fine (I think OSX was 10.1) but I can't get Tiger to install. When I run the install, it reboots, I get to the point where I choose English as the language and then it bombs with all sorts of messages scattered on a grey/black screen. One message is "unable to find driver for this platform."
Can I go from 10.1 to Tiger directly? I used to have a copy of Jaguar that I upgraded the iBook with but I've misplaced it. Any suggestions on how to get Tiger to install?
BTW - I bought a 24-inch iMac last Friday, finishing my transformation to an all-Mac home. My wife is running off a Mac Mini. The 24-inch iMac is amazing.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ron
Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.3)
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I would at least double the RAM of the machine with RAM that is to spec from one of the vendors on my FAQ:
    http://www.macmaps.com/Macosxspeed.html#RAM
I'd also free up at least 8 GB of hard disk space.
Make sure you are using the retail disks, which look like the retail box on this image: You can't use the iMac or Mac Mini Tiger installation discs on the iBook.
As for upgrading from 10.1 to 10.4, that may be possible, but I would go through this sequence of upgrading steps before attempting it that are on my FAQ:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
And then see if an Archive and Install works. Some have not succeeded archive and installing over two separate revisions (i.e. 10.3 to 10.4 works, but not 10.2 to 10.4, or not 10.1 to 10.4). However, their lack of success should not mean you shouldn't try it. They may have had data corruption or some unique driver which couldn't be updated.

  • Leopard, Tiger or Panther on a 667MHz, 1GB PowerBook G4

Firstly, heres my situation. I am a 17 year old student who just needs a fast reliable laptop which I can take around and do work on. I currently have Tiger installed and it runs fairly slowly, I am wondering if reinstalling it will solve my problem.
I have access to all OSX's and can borrow a external DVD drive to install them with. I am wondering which would be the most useful for my situation. Also, just wondering if Panther comes on a CD, so I don't have to borrow the external DVD Drive.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of each OSX. I realize Panther is the oldest and will probably run the fastest on this system, but I heard that Tiger was a great upgrade and still maintained the performance of Panther. And Leopard being the newest will probably be too much for my poor little PowerBook to handle, but will it run at all?
Also, how hard is it to get my hands on a processor upgrade for this? I wouldn't mind an upgrade to 1.5GHz or something similar. And how much would it cost?
    Thanks in advance, Nick.

Hi, Ronin. Your Powerbook doesn't meet the minimum system requirements for Leopard, and although you can install it anyway, it would run slowly and monopolize much more of your limited RAM than Tiger or Panther. I still run Panther on my Tibook because Tiger offered exactly nothing that I found even vaguely interesting, never mind essential. The only thing that will get me to upgrade again on this machine is some killer app (or killer new version of an app I already have) that requires Tiger. I won't upgrade to Leopard until my next new Mac, and even then I'll have to keep this machine to run Classic on: I have a couple of old apps I couldn't live without and can't upgrade. So I suggest either installing Panther or reinstalling Tiger, after wiping your hard drive clean.
No processor upgrades are available for your model.

  • Need to Downgrade from Tiger to Panther

I'm selling my iMac and need to downgrade it from Tiger to Panther, which originally came with the system. How do I go about doing this? In the process I also need to erase everything on my hard drive. Can I perform the downgrading from the original Panther installation cds, or erase the hard drive using those cds and reinstalling Panther from there?

    Hello Kelly.
You need to backup all data first and use the Panther install package that shipped with this Mac and reformat the hard drive zeroing all data. Be sure to select HFS+ (or extended) with Journaling enabled when reformatting the hard drive. Instructions for zeroing all data included with this link.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107437
After doing so, re-install Panther and all software included with the Panther install package that shipped with this Mac when new. When completed, do not proceed with the computer setup assistant and shut down the computer.
When the buyer starts up the computer for the first time, he/she will be greeted with the computer setup assistant and you should include the Panther install package that shipped with this Mac as part of the sale.

  • Panther or Tiger: which is better for iBook 600?

Hi, I will have my aunt's old iBook for maintenance here over the weekend, and I wondered if anyone has any comparative experience on Panther (10.3, currently installed) and Tiger (10.4) on a 600MHz iBook.
I know, I am lazy, but I don't look forward a long weekend of installs, tests, erase and re-installs... My PowerBook 12" certainly was happier with Tiger, but 600MHz is quite meager in comparison.
    Thanks for sharing your experience
    Amadeu

Advantages of Tiger - Spotlight's content search many find is a great tool, however, its downside is that it isn't as fast for simple file searching by name as Panther. Security updates are current. Many more applications and drivers are available now which require at least Tiger.
Depending on the level of experience of your aunt, introducing a new operating system on her may or may not be wise. Each time you install a new operating system you introduce a learning curve. Ask her what sort of learning curve she is willing to tolerate.

  • Wont let me install tiger on panther on the hard drive

    Hello,
I recently obtained a 14" 800mhz ibook g3 with 256 mb of ram from a friend. The reason that they gave it to me in the first place becuase the hard drive crashed and they never bothered fix it. When I got I turned it on, the drive spun up then the computer shut down. I inserted a tiger install cd from my imac g5 and booted from the disk. When the installer ran it told me that tiger could not be installed on this disk. I went to disk utility and tried to repair the disk and it failed every time, erased it, partitioned it, tried everything. I finally convinced my self that the hd was shot. So I went out and bought a 60gb notebook hard drive and installed it myself. Once installed I booted from the tiger cd and ran the installer. It told me that the software was not able to be installed on this computer. I dont know why is said that it the computer seems to meet the specs of tiger. Well I also tried to install panther, when I ran the installer and got to the drive selection screen there was my new hard drive but there was a red stop sign with an exclimation mark on the bottom right and corner of the drive icon. Becuase of this it would not let me continue. I ran disk utility and repaired and everything. I am stumped. Please help me. I am also not sure what version of osx is on there because the owner does not know.
    Again the machine is a...

Edit... Today I when ibook beeped three times when I started it up. After reading some of the apple docs, I learning how thought that it had something do to with the ram. I took it out and then placed it back in. Ran the installer and panther is currently installing!

    Hi, Peter.
Are you sure you have the hard drive set as master? There are jumper settings for the hard drive that may not be set correctly.

  • Mac osx panther on an ibook g3 A1005

hi i have an ibook g3 with osx tiger and i want to put mac osx panther on it cause it is kind of slow with osx tiger and i have a few questions will mac osx panther support wireless internet with an airport card installed and will it support all web sites  like baisic websites please asnswer

You can do it but I have found Tiger to be faster than Panther even on a G3. So I recommend fixing what's wrong vs. downgrading.
Wireless will work but only 802.11b is supported on an iBook.
A G3 is going to be painfully slow on most websites no matter what OS you use. Those that require Flash or updated Java are not likely to work at all.

  • Should I upgrade to Tiger from Panther on a 6 year old G4?

Although my machine excedes the minimum requirements for Tiger, I have held off on upgrading for a long time, because when it first came out, I heard reports that it was much slower than Panther on older macs.
I now, however, have two pieces of software that I want to run that require Tiger, so I am debating again whether to upgrade. My computer is stable and runs well, and I don't want to hurt that or slow it down significantly.
My computer is a dual 550Ghz G4 with 640 mb of Ram and about 5 Gigs of free boot drive space. I did get the DVD rom drive installed when I bought it, so that shouldn't be a problem.
    Should I upgrade?

    Hi Matthew,
since you already run 10.3.9 it does not make much sense to upgrade. Many of the new features of Tiger will not run on your computer due to limited hardware resources. If you are happy with Panther, stay with it until you buy a new computer. My G3/900 iBook runs happily with Panther as well.
BTW: 10.4. Tiger is NOT slower than Panther, in some situations it is even faster.
If this answered your question please consider granting some stars: Why reward points?

  • How do you install OS X Panther on an iBook G4

The iBook g4 is either late 2004 or early 05. It has OS X Leopard but I want Panther ( or mabye Tiger ). I just bought it so I dont know a lot about the history.

    Hello
    Welcome to the Support Communities.
In order for you to install 10.3 Panther or 10.4 Tiger you will need the retail version of either Operating Systems.
Now this is a mid 2005 iBook, the chances are the system disk supplied would have been 10.4 (Tiger) else in if it's a 2004 to early 2005 then it would have been 10.3 Panther.
You may find it hard to get hold of a copy of the system disk for this iBook, you can't buy them through Apple anymore. There are some vender online who may still stock both retail and system restore disks.
    Best of Luck

  • Problems installing Panther on G3 ibook

I recently bought panther off ebay to install on my 3 year old ibook G3 [700mhz, 640 RAM, 30g HD]. I am currently running 10.2.8 without problems.
During the installation process I got the message 'An error has occured during installation' 'Please try to reinstall' I've tried to install, in various ways, 5-7 times at this point with no luck.
I've tried upgrading, I've tried erasing the HD and installing, I've tried only installing/upgrading the necessary componets to run the system, all of which have ended in the same error message. The error occurs during the 'Preparing Base System Part 2' part of the installation process [somewhere around 4 minutes remaining].
I thought it was the discs I purchased, but I was able to install Panther on my external and boot the computer from there, so it seems the discs are good.
In my latest attempt I erased my HD and reinstalled 10.2 from my original disks, upgraded to the most current versions of everything through Software Update and tried the upgrade ... still getting the same error ...
Any suggestions of what might help?

    Hi Again SloMocean!
Unfortunately, those CDs will not work on your iBook.
They are CDs that were designated to be shipped with a specific iBook model.
Although you have an iBook, it may not be exactly the same as the model that those CDs were intended for.
More info here Tip: Mac OS X Install CDs/Use On Multiple Macs.
You need a Full Retail Version of the Panther Install CDs, which can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, etc.
They are no longer available directly from the "Apple Store", as "Tiger 10.4.x" is the most up to date OS.
You may find one on this eBay Search Results Page, but CAVEAT EMPTOR, as you have discovered!
If you do an expanded search on eBay, or Amazon, you will probably find more.
Once again, make sure the CDs that you purchase, look like THESE.
Once 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update.

  • Panther on latest ibooks?

okay, this is on behalf of a mate who has just bought a brand new 1.4ghz ibook (running tiger) for music production, and is having more problems than i have ever seen anyone have with a mac. it just seems to be running audio apps ridiculously slow. for example, in reason 3 we can't get the latency below 15ms without breakup, and running just 1 subtractor and 1 redrum takes the CPU well over 50%. that probably doesnt mean much to non-reason users, but suffice to say my brother's last-generation 1ghz model (running panther) beat this by a country mile. we've also had several OS freakouts where the 'system' CPU usage (i.e. the red bar) peaks up to 100% for up to 10 seconds at a time. i've heard reports from other users about problems using tiger for audio, so we decided to try and downgrade to panther. unfortunately, the new machines won't seem to boot up from panther disks, even those for the older ibooks. i seem to recall that the last wave wouldnt boot from jaguar disks either, but there was a way to get it installed if you were determined. can anyone shed any light on this for me?

The others are correct, you can't install a version of Mac OS X that's earlier than the version that shipped with your Mac. In fact, the new iBooks won't even boot from a retail copy of Tiger or even Mac OS X 10.4.1. They require a version of 10.4.2 that's even newer than the one available from the software update.
If you're having trouble, you might re-install from the install disks you did get with the new iBook. What audio applications are you using? Perhaps there are updates for them to make them Tiger-compatible?

  • Installing Panther on my ibook

i have an old ibook g3 and it is running 10..2, which does not support airport extreme WPA passwords. so our network runs on just that, so i need 10.3 to b able to get on the network.
i have resource install discs that came with my fathers laptop, which is an ibook g4. some people have said that the discs are made only for one specific system, but wen i used to have a clamshell, i was able to get os x 10.2 on it easily with my friends discs.
so im really confused and have no idea what to do or if im gonna need to get real OS disks.

    Welcome To Discussions Grimm 665!
    Here is some additional information.
Once a purchased version of OS X has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.9 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
As Gulliver posted, be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.
