Tiger won't Install (iBook g4)

Hi, I have a iBook G4, currently running OS X 10.3.9. I purchased the retail version of Tiger, but I can't get it to install on my computer. It goes through the process until the "destination drive verification" at which point it stops and says there has been an error and tells me to try again. I've retried this several times, but it still won't install. Any advice? Thanks!!

did you do disk repair beforehand?? if not, you should do so immediately. instructions are here. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214. after a few runs through the repair, it should say "no repairs necessary". after doing the utility, you should select the first drive icon (not macintosh hd, but the first one which gives it capacity) and check to see if something there says "smart status". it should hopefully say verified. keep me posted. [ 8 ) ]

Tiger Won't Install On G4 4 450 AGP

Removed all extra PCI cards and RAM to the stock machine and 10.4 still won't install.
It starts the set up and then when it gets to chosing the hard drive it locks up and won't install.

On my fourth try, I got Tiger to install on my G4 AGP 350.
Here's what I did, following advice from these forums and from Apple Support:
Ensure Tiger is only installing to one unpartioned volume.
(I re-initialized my second internal hard drive to be unpartioned.)
Run DiskWarrior on that volume.
Unplug all peripherals except keyboard and mouse. No Firewire or USB or SCSI devices were plugged in during installation of Tiger.
Remove all PCI cards I added myself (a SCSI card).
I left all the RAM in place, even though it was largely added by me and not factory original.
Restart with the install DVD in the internal DVD drive while holding down the "c" key on the keyboard.
Select "Basic Install" (apart from selecting the volume, don't do any custom installing, let all the printer drivers etc be installed--Apple said I could delete them later).
A little over an hour later, the monitor was dark and the green power light was pulsing... OS X was working!
OS X asked about my keyboard (it's a marvellous Macally full-size keyboard--the power button still shuts down OS X Tiger) and then completed its install.
I installed a security update and maybe (since it was mentioned elsewhere in these forums) that update removed some desktop icons in my OS 9.2.2 volume (most of the icons had disappeared when I rebooted into 9.2.2 from the other internal hard drive, using Control Panel--Startup Disk).
In Tiger, I proceeded to customize the Dock, run Dashboard, run Safari, run Slideshow, run Quicktime Player 7, run Preview, and do things I normally need to go into Photoshop to do (create custom icons for things that I've put in the Dock).
So thanks to all the wise elders who helped me!

Tiger won't install on G4 AGP 350

I'm trying to install Tiger on a newly-put-in internal 40 Gig HD, so I have two volumes, one 10 Gig 9.2.2 and one 40 Gig OS X. The new HD is partitioned into two tiny volumes and one large (38 MB) volume.
I get through the installation (only if I unplug all devices--if left plugged in I see a black rectangle and installation doesn't begin at all) and then the computer reboots. After the grey Apple logo and spinning animation has been onscreen for a minute, I then see a grey circle with a diagonal line through it (like a no-parking sign) with the spinning animation below it. After 10 minutes of looking at this, I assume the installation has failed.
I tried removing my PCI SCSI card and removing two of four banks of RAM, leaving two identical banks of 128 MB each (total 256 MB), and got the same result. I didn't try re-running the entire installation after doing this since I have already three times gone through the entire installation process and then tried to reboot. Will it make any difference if I leave the SCSI card and RAM out and re-run the installer from scratch?
Will running Disk Warrior somehow enable Tiger to boot? (OS X's disk utility program says the volume is okay and permissions are okay).
The hard drive I'm trying to install to is set (by dip switch) to be the slave drive. After OS X had run its install program, it set the OS X partition as the startup volume automatically.

I erased it as mentioned in the answer but it still won't let me install Tiger. I selected the disk in the "disk utility" and erased it with "extended journaled". I don't know what else I can do. Do I have to use the "secure erase option" (that takes 2 hours)?

You have an Intel Mac. You have to click the "Options" button when formatting and select GUID format. Once you do that, it should be bootable. However, it will now no longer boot a PowerPC Mac. If you need to boot both types of machines from the same external disk, you will need two partitions, one for the Intel Mac and one for the PowerPC. Here are more complete instructions.

Tiger won't install!!!

I just bought a copy of Tiger for my iBook G4, but when it gets past language chooser it says 'This software cannot be installed on your computer'. I find it quite absurd that Apple let it do this. What can I do?
Otherwise my copy of Tiger is completely useless and I have wasted money!

Did you purchase a Tiger retail install package?
If not, you did waste your money. A Tiger install or upgrade package that shipped with a new Mac purchase and is labeled for same is model and build specific and cannot be used to install Tiger on another Mac.
Even if you purchased a Tiger install package labeled for an iBook, the build must be identical to your iBook model which is not likely.
The Tiger retail install package can be used to install Tiger on any Mac model that meets the minimum system requirements.

Tiger won't install and other issues

Trying to help a friend with a suddenly problematic iMac (G4/800 512). Machine is running 10.3.9. Tried to install 10.4 (tiger) - went through installation and ejected after about 30min with a 'can't install' dialogue box (sorry I wasn't there for the actual text, but it failed three times). Ran Preferences in Disk Utility, repaired a couple, then tried to backup iTunes. Superdrive ran like molasses, even at 1x.
Is this mosaic of issues related??? Is this a nuke and rebuild? Or is this a HD facing extinction?

It would be helpful to know the exact error message provided with the "can't install" dialogue but did this friend purchase a Tiger retail install package which is on a single DVD and has a black label?
Any current problems with this Mac running 10.3.9?
Has the S.M.A.R.T. status for the drive been checked via Disk Utility and if a Tiger retail install package is being used, was Repair Disk (not repair disk permissions) run on the boot volume via Disk Utility when booted from the Tiger install disc before proceeding with the installation?
Is there plenty of free hard drive space available?

Tiger won't install on macbook

I recentlly purchased a Macbook MA252 1.83GHz 2GB 320GB. It came without an operating system. I tried to install Snow Lepord but it said I needed Lepord first. So I then tried to install Tiger but when I put the disk in it does nothing. I'm assuming that the computer doesn't support the newer version of Tiger & I have to install Lepord. The Tiger disk isn't the gray disk but the black one. Any help would be great.

The Mac OS X Server 10.4 Universal Binary will run on early Intel Macs and is available to the public, and every Intel Mac that was publicly available and has at least 2GB of RAM supports Snow Leopard or Lion.

Tiger won't install on Pismo

I have a G3 Pismo powerbook. It is listed as supported on the Tiger information page and has all required- speed, memory, firewire and DVD.
I put in a new hard drive and tried to install Tiger with the full retail black X install DVD (the very first disk version although there was a later version available. The Applestore sent the oldest version).
After the long installation process, it will only boot to the blue screen and then give the Ghostbusters sign.
However, when I tried to install Tiger using a friend's Tiger installer DVD it installs perfectly. The laptop is not at fault and is running the second Tiger install fine. I believe the DVD to be faulty but Apple is not willing to replace it. Advice please.

Start jumping up and down at the AppleStore (I'm assuming the online store) and have them send you a working up-to-date replacement disk. AFAIK, all of their products are warranteed for at least 30 days. Don't take NO for an answer.

Tiger won't install on G4 Gigabit Ethernet

I have a Gigabit Ethernet with standard features (1 cpu, 450mHz, factory CD/DVD drive) and have had a single 80 gb drive in the machine. I have added two Western Digital ATA 160 gb drives and a Sonnet ATA-133 card, whose firmware I upgraded to 4.5 to be able to access all of the 160 gb drive.
I previously had installed a retail copy of Tiger (CDs, not DVDs) onto the original 80 gb drive and wanted to install the OS fresh on one of the new 160s. Every time I go through the installation, the installer finishes up without asking for the second (or third or fourth) CD. The resulting installation will not boot, though Startup Disk from the installer CD says that there is a valid system there.
I guess I could put the original 80 gb disk back in on the second ATA plug in the Sonnet card and run Carbon Copy Cloner, but I'd really prefer a brand new, fresh system installation.
Any thoughts?

Well, that got us the answer, but not directly.
The Western Digital drives have a jumper setting called "cable select," which is the configuration in which they are delivered. I hadn't bothered to change them.
Which wasn't a problem, just that I hadn't RTFM and thought the gray connector was master and black was slave. Ooops. I had been trying to put the OS on the slave.
Once I re-partitioned the drives correctly and tried to put the OS on the master, all was well.

ITunes won't install on my OS 10.3. Will Tiger 10.4 run it?

My PowerMac G4 is running Panther 10.3.9. I have a 733 MHz processor. iTunes won't install nor can I view any videos. If I go to Youtube the system crashes. Some sites tell me I need a flashplayer upgrade, but it won't install. An Apple tech told me to upgrade to Leopard 10.5 and it would solve my problems. My understanding is that Leopard 10.5 needs 867MHz to run. If I upgrade to Tiger 10.4 will that solve any of my problems?

First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
Yes, OS 10.3.9 cannot run the latest iTunes 9. You will need at least Mac OS 10.4.11 and above to run it. Your problem with YouTube may just be with your browser if you are using Safari. For now you might want to try Camino 1.6.9 and see if you have any better luck. Camino 1.6.9 tends to be a slightly more updated version of browser than the last version of Safari that runs on 10.3.9 Panther. If you do upgrade to Tiger 10.4.11 though you would be able to use a more updated version of Safari which will "play" nicer with sites such as YouTube and Google etc.
Hardware and software system requirements for iTunes 9 can be found at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
And here are the "Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger System Requirements". You will need to purchase a "full retail" version of Tiger 10.4 install discs from a third party reseller such as on ebay etc. and the discs tend to sell for a premium these days. General idea of price can be seen by going to ebay and searching for "full retail 10.4 Tiger install" and then clicking on the "Completed Auctions" link in the left column. This should give your a good idea of what they tend to sell for on the resale market when available. Do not purchase machine specific or "upgrade" discs.

10.4 won't install on g4 iBook.... because I'm stupid.

I bought a little 12" g4 iBook to give away. I have one just like it. The one I just bought came with 10.3.7. My other g4 is running 10.4.11. I have the iBook g4 start up disks, so I thought... "Hey! I'll make this new one 10.4, as well!" But (and here's where I think I screwed up) I made it a "clean install". And now, it won't install, at all. The "checking installation DVD" part comes out clean. It even seems to be installing certain things and writing receipts. Then, I keep getting a "could not be installed... restart?" message. ...sigh... Was it the clean install? I thought 10.4 was an entirely new OS, not just an upgrade. Do I need to go buy some software that I can clean-install, to fix this? Right now, the new g4 can only start up on the installation disks because Genius, here, erased the volume. Somebody hit me.

Well if it was 10.4.2 retail installer you would have been able to use it to upgrade 10.3.9.
I use a "standard" known good external DVD drive to do all my installs. It saves headaches with questionable drives.
I have one just like it. The one I just bought came with 10.3.7. My other g4 is running 10.4.11.
So try using target mode:

First hook the two iBooks together with a FireWire cable.
Then start the iBook running 10.4.11 in target mode.
Then start the new iBook up. You might need to use the option key to select the 10.4.11 OS. You might also need to zap the pram and vram.
If that works reverse the host computer and use SuperDuper to clone the OS in your iBook over the new iBook.

What's the problem here??? When I download Safari 2.0.1 -- which it says is the latest version, it won't install on my Powerbook, which is running 10.9.4-- says the latest it will run on is 10.4.2. Why hasn't Apple updated Safari to run on the newest versions??

You can use Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4if you have your Tiger disks.
Scroll down to see the Optional Installs icon.
You need to then run the combo OSX update afterwards to bring Safari up to date.
Alternately, andyball-uk has generously uploaded a Safari app you can download from here,
Click the "free" option to download it. Unzip the file, place the safari app in your applications folder, then run disk permissions repair, using Disk Utility.

Tiger won't load on my G3 iBook combo

Having trouble loading Tiger onto my G3 iBook w/combo drive. Bought the Tiger family pack and everything loaded fine on my kid's iMac G5.
I understand that I can connect my G5 to my iBook and load the software... a genius told me at the apple store. Can anyone give me directions on doing this? Please be simple with your expanation so that I can follow along....

The installation software cannot be located on the hard disk that you want to install it to. So copying the installation software to the G3 will not work. By inserting the installation DVD in the iMac G5 and by putting the G5 in target mode, you authorize the G3 to see all the G5's startup volumes.
Insert your installation disk in the G5. Wire the G5 to the G3 with a FireWire cable. Put your iMac G5 in target mode. On your G3, open the STARTUP item (mine is in french and is called DEMARRAGE) in the Control Panel folder (in OS 9) or in the System Preference (in OS X). In the startup window, select the installation CD as your startup disk and restart your G3. The G3 should restart using the installation DVD, and will then proceed to the instalation.
I did it only once (and it worked). I installed TIGER from my iMac G5's internal DVD reader to my DVDless iMac G3. I don't have my FireWire cable to repeat it, so I gave you the procedure as I can recall it the better. I will have a FireWire cable soon and will be able to completely repeat the procedure if you need it.

Can i use my ibook cd to install tiger on my g3 ibook?

Just wondering if I can install Tiger from the install cds that came with my iBook G4. I have 512 mb of RAM on my iMac G3 500 MHz, and I'm currently running OS 9.2.2. I'll have to install from my iBook via a firewire.

I doesn't matter if you physically have both machines or not. The license is to install it only on the Mac that it shipped with.
And... when you sell a computer you should include the original install media (and license keys) for whatever software you include on the hard drive.

Ibooks won't install "unknown error has occured"

Trying to install iBooks on a new iPad. It starts to install then immediately says "Unknown Error Has Occured" and quits. I've erased all and reset, reset, and re-booted. IOS Version is 4.3.3 (8J2). Any ideas?
