Tiger won't start up, no volume to mount to?

Hi everyone,
I was doing some permissions repair and disk cleanup, when my power went out. Now Tiger won't start up! I get a full-screen shell with the following text:
disk0s3: I/O error.
disk0s3: I/O error.
/etc/master.password: Input/output error
disk0s3: I/O error.
-sh: /etc/profile: Input/output error
-sh-2.05b#
If I leave the Mac on, the fans start spinning up slowly and keep building to a roar. I've left it on for about 1 minute, then shut it down.
Starting up by holding the Command key down after the startup ding gets me a screen with a folder icon (?), which proceeds to turn into a smiley face and then the bootup sequence starts. It then goes back to the full-screen shell.
I put in my Tiger (10.4) install disk, and the Disk Utility shows the Hard Drive, but the Macintosh HD volume is greyed out and won't / can't mount, be verified, or repaired.
Trying to install so that I can archive / install yields no HDs that I can install to. Luckily I keep my PC around for just such an occurance
So the question is, what is going on here? Thanks in advance,
-Gary

You are going to have to reformat the drive. If there is a chance of data recovery it would be best if you stop using the drive altogether. Find another Mac with Firewire. Connect the two by Firewire cable. Boot the "bad" computer into Target Disk Mode, then boot the "good" computer normally. The "bad" computer's disk drive should appear on the other computer's Desktop. If the drive is still accessible, then you may be able to recover your data.
When you reformat the drive use the following procedure:
1. Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

  • OS X 10.4 Tiger won't start

Just bought a new Macbook pro running leopard.
My old powerbook G4 running Tiger now won't start.
It gets to the grey apple page, then the circular spinning gate, then after some considerable time 'starting mac os x'
    thats where it stays.
    Any ideas?

Target Disk Mode is described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
If it works, see if the MacBook Pro can see the Powerbook. If it can see the Powerbook, you can import the mailboxes with the Mail program from the other machine.
If it doesn't work, how old is the Powerbook?

  • ICal on Tiger won't start. No crash message.

    Hi all,
I installed Leopard on an unsupported 800Mhz G4 iMac. It worked fine but the airport card wasn't supported, so I decided to revert back to Tiger.
So, I did an erase and install, to give me a brand "new" clean system. After the install I downloaded the software updates.
Then I did a sync, replacing all the data on the computer with the data in .Mac. Everything works fine: mail, address book, bookmarks ... BUT ... iCal now won't start. The icon bounces 3 or 4 times, then it stops without another word. Looking in the console log shows that iCal hits a "white space" or "white page" error (I'm not at my machine ATM)
Anybody got any ideas how to cure this? Can I do a reinstall to repaie iCal?
    Stuart

    Stuart,
.Mac has been suffering maintenance pains since Oct 19, 2007 5:51 AM.
If your problem is related to .Mac sync, and you do not have any other backups, it may be difficult to resolve until .Mac is fully functional.
In the meantime experiment with removing the iCal Plist. This can be accomplished by quitting iCal and dragging the com.apple.iCal.plist file which is located in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder to the Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and check iCal for normal behavior. You can delete the iCal plist file on your Desktop.

  • After last update, my os Tiger won't start normally

I tried to update my 1.25 ibook with the update that came out around the end of febuary and now my computer won't start normally.
I can safeboot this system but after about 10 minutes it freezes and must be restarted. a few time I have gotten it to start to safemode, and then restart right afterwards, and it will restart in normal mode, but then freeze after a few minutes. I've tried to reboot from my backup disks and I can get done with the upload, but then things all freeze up, then I'm forced to power down and start again. Its been a few weeks, and I miss my laptop, and need to get some work done so, getting this resolved would be great
    thanks

    First...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

  • Tiger won't start

I have a 450mhz G4 that's been running 10.3 fine for years. However I need to upgrade it to 10.4.
I reset permissions, installed 10.4 from the DVD (black), and everything seemed to be working fine. I reset permissions again, then did Software update. It installed normally to 10.4.11, and restarted. That when it stalled at the "No" symbol.
I rebooted from the DVD, reset the permissions, same result. Resetting the PRAM didn't help either. I tried reinstalling to the base 10.4 version on the DVD, and now even that won't run.
I did successfully install 10.3 on a second partition, and can boot from that. I have downloaded the combined updater seperately, but can't run it until I can get booted in 10.4.
Safe Mode will not work. Option start lets me select the HD, but it still stalls the same way.
I have a recent backup, but don't want to go the full install route unless there is a good chance it will work.
Nothing is currently connected except the keyboard, mouse and monitor. No hardware has been changed.

Hi John, just a note, even with the 7.2 GB free space partition you are going to be hard pressed to run Tiger, with just a Browser & Text Edit open, my VM is using 6.98 GB if free space!
Tiger uses twice as many resources as Panther, updates are twice as big, on & on.

  • Ibook G3 Tiger won't start up; PLS HELP

My computer was "asleep". I hit the track pad to wake it and my computer comes back on. However, the spinning wheel wouldn't stop and all of the sudden the screen went grey to the spinning circle like during start up. I waited to see if it would resolve on its own..nothing. I tried restarting by pressing the power button down and it won't boot up. It gets to the blue screen with the apple and the progress bar goes all the way to the end and then it can't get passed it.
I tried starting from CD with c key--and it prompts me to install the software. I checked disk permissions and all of that came back fine..so the HD appears to be OK.
I tried restarting holding the shift key down, nothing happenes.
Can anyone help--I'd really rather not have to reinstall system software!

Try starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. In Tiger, click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.

  • Tiger won't start up on it's own! Please help!

Okay fellow Mac enthusiasts, I've come before you all once again for help and advice.
Here's the problem. For the past few months, my computer can not and will not start up on it's own. Meaning that when I start up, it goes to a blue screen and just stays there. Now, if I start up from the install disk and run Disk Utility and fix the permissions, when I restart, it works fine...until I need to restart, which works about 50% of the time. If not, it just returns to the blue screen once again.
Now, about a month ago, I grew tired of this method and wiped the hard drive clean and reinstalled Tiger. Things worked great once again for about a week. But now, the same problem happens again, every time. So I'm back to starting up from the Tiger disk, running utilities to fix the permissions, and restarting.
So I ask if anybody has had this problem, come across this problem, or knows how to fix the problem, please share with me.
Thank you to everyone in advance for help.

Try things in Apple doc.#106464 for your startup issue.
Also, try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. Repairing the hard drive is different then Repairing Permissions and may fix your problem. Permissions have little to do with this issue. Smokes link will help walk you thru it.
    Cheers!

  • Tiger  won't start after install

    Hi there,
I have just installed Tiger on the 2nd Hard drive in my G4 (533Mhz) but when I restart I get the prohibiting sign after awhile and nothing more happens.
I'm running OS9.1 from the other HD but needed Tiger to upgrade to new dreamweaver.
I've searched the forums and Support notes and still can't get it to start.
    Installation seemed to be successful.
Firmware checked and up to date.
Used Disc fisrt aid - all OK.
Starting in safe mode doesn't work.
I tried installing again with the Archive and install to no avail.
Does anyone have any suggestions to get it going?
    I'd appreciate the help.
    regards

Could this be a Master-Slave issue? It might be necessary to reset the dipswitches on the hard drives to turn the 2nd drive into the Master disk, and the reduce the drive containing OS 9 to the Slave disk. (I had a similar issue with installing OS X onto a second disk, and this was suggested as a possible solution, but it didn't happen to work for me.)

  • Tiger won't start up....

Last night I shut down my Mac G5 normally. This morning my wife turned it on and Mac OS X would not start up. The white/gray 'Apple' screen came up, then it shifted to the blue screen, but the Mac OS X block never came up. Instead it shifted to a black screen that I have never seeen (very similar to a microsoft DOS screen). At the top it says 'Darwin/BSD (my computer name.local) and asks me to log in. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

    Dale,
I just wanted to close out the discussion on my Tiger issues. First off, thank you for help. I decided to go into the Apple store and use the Genius Bar. What a fantastic service! They powered up my G5 at the store and diagnosed the problem. After a couple of tests he determined that the hard drive actually had a hardware malfunction and it was getting worse as we went along. He checked the backup files on my external and used the 'Target Disk Mode' on my G5 to extract any additional files I wanted. Then he helped me locate a new hard drive from a retailer on-line, took the back off of the G5 and showed me how to replace it, and then walked me through the reload process. Bummer that my hard drive is failing, but it has been 3 yrs with absolutely no other problems. I am just thankful that my backup setup was effective and that we were able to get everything off. It was a learning experience. In the end I am glad that I did not purchase the 'Disk Warrior'. They will actually use it at the Apple store to fix the computer at no cost if that would have fixed it. Like I said, I was very impressed. Thanks again and I hope this helps someone in the future.

  • Tiger won't start up after massive update from Apple.

    Greetings Apple Discussions:
I have been using Tiger for a few months. I have my main start up on a 250 and back ups on other HDs. I updated some Apple apps from the Apple Software Update program: Apps like Quicktime, iPod, etc. The computer went into restart and never restarted—from the main start up HD. It just hangs on the Apple logo. I have to start up from other HDs. Is there something I can do to repair the main HD. I have most of the updates on it since cloning a copy of it a few months ago. I can access its contents.
    Thank you.
    Aubrey

    Hi, Aubrey.
    1. I suggest you begin troubleshooting using the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. An errant Startup or Login Item maybe the cause. In this case, it may be a Startup Item or perhaps a third-party kernel extension. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if an errant Startup Item is causing the problem.
    3. It may be that the update did not install correctly. For example, you may have had directory corruption present before you attempted to install the update. If that's the case, or if step 1 above finds issues, even if they are corrected, then an Archive and Install would be in order. See my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the specified order.
Before installing future software updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems and gives you a fallback position in case trouble arises.
    Good luck!

  • My laptop won't start without battery mounted

Hello! I have a Compaq CQ61-200sq laptop and recently my battery just got "old". So for the time untill i will buy a new one a just took it out and try to use the laptop without battery, just with the AC adaptor pluged in. But, just i said it won't start if i don't mount the battery. If i took the battery out while it's on there is no problem.
So, my question, beside what could be the problem, is if the problem will disapear with a new battery. I don't want to buy a new battery and still have problems.
    Thank you!

I updated it about two to three times and would still experience the same problem.
Why update 3 times?!? If you run an update, and it installs normally, that it - done!
There's a world of difference between running BatteryUpdate 1.2 and installing a new battery. In fact, if you read the linked page above, it states that the after you run battery update if you experience any of the listed problems you should contact AppleCare. Their first step will be to replace the battery. Could it be a logic board problem? Sure. Is that the first thing they'll do? No. By that reasoning, the first thing to try if your car fails to start on a cold morning is to put in a new engine...
So, to the OP, contact Apple - or better yet, if it's convenient, go in to an Apple Store. Get a new battery. If the problem persists, go from there. The advantage of taking it into a Store is that they'll test it on the spot.

The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972).
This is a directory issue that Disk Utility cannot fix. Although it manifests itself as a software issue sometimes it may be hardware based. See DiskUtility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing avolume http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1901?viewlocale=en_US". You can try using a utility like TechTool Pro, Drive Genius or Disk Warrior to repair and replace the directory. Another option would be to use the Archive and Install feature to reinstall. If the problem returns after correction you may have a failing or failed HDD.

  • [SOLVED] PulseAudio Volume Control won't start anymore

    Hi!
As described in the title, PulseAudio Volume Control won't start from one day to another.
I have no clue where this could come from or what I could have done wrong to create this issue.
Here is how it looks like:
When I start it, it seems to be loading but after some time it just disappears and nothing happens.
I also have the same looking issue with KMix and Google Music Manager.
Do any of you have an idea where this could be coming from?
    Thanks for your help :-)

They are all repository packages, NOT from the AUR. As previously mentioned, this is a fresh install, so I don't have any custom repositories. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
