Tiggering multiple DSLRs tethered to Aperture

How would one go about triggering multiple cameras through Aperture; this would require plugins and perhaps a little modification on the USB hardware but I'd like to fire multiple cameras together. I can do this in H/W but I'd rather see if a plugin for this exists.
I'm going to be using multiple Nikon DSLRs, which when using PTP only allow remote shutter release through the USB connection.
Any Express-card based solutions out there?

  • Capturing (Tethering) in Aperture 3

I have  one of my Nikon DSLRs tethered to Aperture 3 and have managed to doa  capture session.  The image files ppear in the project that I have directed them to.  However I can not open the images or edit them etc.  They appear in the browser within Aperture but thay will not open.  If I try to use a comand through the adjustment HUD for example, the file privew will dissapear seemingly to be lost forever.
Are the files being stored in some other location, thought he privews (if that is what they are) seem to be in the project I want them to be in. I ahve tried all right click dropdown options to see if there is aanything that may be obvious to get the images to load so they can be edited.  No luck.
Does anyone know what is going on here ?
    Thanks.
    Iain.

When you started the session did you specify the files to be stored in a location other than the Aperture Library? If so make sure Aperture can still connect to this location. Aperture won't be able to find referenced files if the drive is unavailable or you have moved the images using Finder. If this is the case there will be an little yellow triangle in the bottom right corner of the image warning you it can't find the referenced files.
If you've moved them you'll have to use File>Locate Referenced Files to reconnect to their new location, you'll only have to do one, it should find all the rest by itself.

  • Cameras that Support Tethering in Aperture?

    Hi
Does anyone have a list of cameras that support tethering in Aperture please?
    Many thanks

    Take a look here: http://www.20seven.org/blog/articles/2008/02/17/cameras-that-work-or-dont-with-a perture-20/
Most Nikon DSLRs will work, however only a few Canon DSLRs is supported.

  • Can I search for multiple images simultaneously in Aperture?

Can I search for multiple images simultaneously in Aperture?  For example, search for 'Image2.jpg, Image3.jpg, Image5.jpg' by image name, out of different folders?

dusan -- your best procedure is likely to be to type the first file name (without extension) in the search field of the Photos View, and then mark that file either with a Flag or a color label.  (You might clear all Flags prior.)  If you have a lot of images or a slow computer (or both ) you may have to wait a few seconds.  Aperture will show "Loading ... " on the left side of the tool strip while it churns through your images.
Then hit backspace twice, and type "60".  Mark the file found.
    Repeat with variations.
Then go to Flagged view, or filter the whole Photos view for the color-label you used.

  • Using tethering in Aperture

When using tethering in Aperture, is it possible to have the shots appear behind a pre-designed layout for composition control?

Allen -- Frank and Neil have giving excellent answers.  Personally, I found Betty Edwards lessons to be better than her science.  You might also look for Harold Speed's book on drawing (was available in a Dover edition), as well as (in a different vein) James Watrous' excellent "The Craft of Old Master Drawings".  But the _very best_ advice I can give you is:  don't read; draw.  Just get a bunch of #2 pencils (with erasers, they have always been used), and _draw every day_.  Drawing is a skill.  Skill increases through repetition and active engagement.  For adults, the biggest hurdle is accepting that they draw with the skill of someone who has rarely drawn (hence the exercises to "short-circuit" the squelcher in your brain).  Start with ... carrots.  Peel them, cut them into 1/2 to 3" lengths, set three or four pieces before you, and copy their outlines and the edges between the flat faces left by the peeler.  Concentrate on the angle of the lines on the paper (vertical, horizontal, by how much), and how they correspond to the 3D forms of the carrot pieces.  This is hard, but your drafting skills will have given you the (invaluable) ability to imagine forms in space.  Set in the corner of your eye a meter gauging when the paper is _activated_.  I'm not going to define that -- you'll have to feel for it.  Learn how to tingle this awareness, and tingle it constantly.
When you feel comfortable with this, set the carrots up on a piece of paper, and after your first drawing, rotate the paper 30° and do a second drawing.
Other variations will occur to you.
And in the meantime, carry a sketchbook with you and when you see an interesting leaf, draw it.
When you're ready to try plants you'll know.
Drawing animals is hard.  Start with sleeping ones.
Drawing people is _very very very hard_.
    To repeat the important parts:
    - draw _often_.  Frequency is more important than duration.  As Michelangelo said to his students: "Not a day without a line!"
    - be kind with yourself.  No-one was born drawing well (drawing prodigies are extremely rare -- Durer was one).
    - carry a sketchbook
    - stick with one tool for a good bit.  Pencil is great.  If you prefer something else, use it.
    - learn to create form (the effect of 3D) with line.  Shading comes later.
    - _activate_ the page on which you draw.  Red-line that little meter in the corner of your eye.
When you have schooled your hand and judgement by such diligence, you will acquire rapidity before you are aware of it.
    Leonardo Da Vinci
Above all else, have fun.  Post back at some point.  .

  • Can I use multiple iPhoto libraries with Aperture?

I've been using iPhoto to manage my photos (successfully) for many years.  I have multiple themed iPhoto libraries with many thousands of photos in them (ten years' worth of digital plus another fifty years scanned).  I am thinking of downloading Aperture and giving it a try (thanks to an App Store gift card).
Can I use Aperture to edit photos within these iPhoto libraries?  Do the libraries become "common" to both applications, or does duplication occur?  I have limited hard drive space and don't want to create large duplicate files on my iMac.
    Thanks.

I have some 50-100 libraries (haven't counted recently) which occupy most of my hard drive.  I find it easiest to manage my photos with themed libraries (annual, trip, subject).
You could make each of your "themed Libraries" a Folder in Aperture, with all your current Projects and Albums intact.  In this way, you could search across all of your Image at once (e.g.: a Smart Album showing all Images in which you've identified a Face as "Mom"; or filter for the keyword "Sunset").  In general, the more Images in a Library, the more useful that Library is.  I strongly recommend one Library for each photographer (or group of photographers working as a business).  Aperture has no trouble handling enormous Libraries (officially, it supports up to 1,000,000 Images, iirc).
A more advanced Library organization would replace each "themed" Folder+Projects with Albums.  There is no reason to limit your "themes" to the Images in just the Projects contained in a Folder.
My general recommendation has always been to put all your Projects in one Folder (with sub-Folders as needed); and to put all your Albums in another top-level Folder.  In this way you build two structures: a _storage_ structure, in which you put all your Projects, where each Project = one shoot, and an _access_ structure, where you have Albums organized by Folders into whatever groupings you need.
The newest version of Aperture (3.3.1) leans in this direction.  For the first time there is a default division between Project storage and Album storage (one the Library tab of the Inspector, there are now two built-in top-level containers, one for Projects and one for Albums).
A separate issue is where on your system your Library and your Originals are stored.  Aperture allows you to move your Originals to storage on external drives or other non-system drives.  The limitation of the storage available on the system drive is something that all active photographers encounter at some point.  (In Aperture-speak, you would convert Image's Originals from Managed to Referenced using "File➞Relocate Originals".  This isn't something I'd look into right away, but rather after you become familiar with the Aperture interface.

  • Multiple iPhoto Libraries in Aperture?

I have been an iPhoto user since the beginning, and thus have about 7 iPhoto libraries of about 5000 keyworded pics each. Up till now I have not combined them even though the current version of iPhoto should handle them all.
I am considering a new Intel-based Mac and Aperture purchase, but a key feature need I have is to "see" all 7 iPhoto libraries in Aperture without importing all these libraries into the aperture library. I get the impression this is possible with 1.5, but have not seen it discussed specifically. Ideally I could see these old iPhoto libraries as 7 projects; from then on out I would import from the camera directly into Aperture.
    Anyone doing or done this?

Ok, I don't know if this would count but here's what I did:
I have two Macs and use iPhoto on both, populated with different content. So I guess that would count as multiple iPhoto libraries.
I'm on my MacBook Pro and I mounted my home volume on the remote PowerMac G4.
I launch Aperture and created a new project called "say "Import->iPhoto Library…".
The file browser drops down. I navigate to "Remote User Home->Pictures->iPhoto Library". I also chose "Store Files: In their current location". Then I clicked Choose.
Aperture started chugging along. I had created a new project and selected it for the import, expecting the imported photos to be stored in the new project. Instead, Aperture created an iPhoto Library folder on the root level, and a Rolls folder inside it. Each roll in the iPhoto library became a Project in the Rolls subfolder. Each Album in the iPhoto Library became an album in the iPhoto Library folder in Aperture. Slide shows in the iPhoto library did not get imported. Trash in the iPhoto library did not get imported.
Next, I imported the local iPhoto library to see what it would do with a 2nd iPhoto library.
    Again, I said "Import->iPhoto Library…".
The file browser drops down and points automatically to "Local User Home->Pictures->iPhoto Library". I also chose "Store Files: In their current location". Then I clicked Choose.
Nothing happened. Background Task List shows nothing.
Thinking that Aperture could only allow one iPhoto Library photo, I renamed the folder and tried again. Still nothing.
I created a new folder and moved all the imported items into the new folder. I then deleted the original iPhoto Library folder that was created. Still nothing.
I then deleted all the items imported from the remote iPhoto library, quit and restarted Aperture and tried to import the local iPhoto library again. Still nothing happened.
So my bizarre interim conclusion is that I can import an iPhoto Library from a non-standard location but not my primary iPhoto Library.
    I'm stumped.
I need to take care of other stuff. Will continue the experiments later.
    Anybody care to try?

  • Can't Store Files in correct folder when Tethering in Aperture 2

    Hi everyone,
I've been using Aperture 2 for two years now tether shooting with a Nikon D300 with no major problems with only minor problems along the way.
I'm now having problems when tethering storing my particular files in its designated folder. I have all my projects organized and referenced folders that mirror how my projects are organize. Its just one particular project and now I can not store file in its designated folder. When starting to tether, I can choose the correct project and from the Store Files drop down box, the designated folder is grayed out and I can't select the folder I want the images to store in.
If I select "Choose" from the drop down box, and then select the designated folder, Aperture selects the next folder down on the Store Files drop down box. It just started happening. I can correct the files location in Finder but thats just a nuisance. Its just this one folder thats giving me problems.
Any help would be appreciated? thx

  • Nikon D800 Multiple Exposure problem in Aperture

When I shoot multiple exposures with the new Nikon D800, import into Aperture (latest greatest version with all updates up-to-date) the image imported looks NOTHING like what was on the saved/merged image in-camera and appears red-red-red. Shot a bunch last night had issue with every one. Think there might be an overlooked glitch here. Everything else seems to work 100% with D800, but this might be glitch.
So, I wanted to be sure I wasn't seeing things, took the camera to kid's soccer game today to further test, got home and loaded 'em into Aperture, same exact thing. The blown-out ones are the multiple exposures (look perfect in-camera) and as you can see the following photo is as it was shot (non-red ones to the right of the selected 5 that are blow-out examples.)

I don't think it's magic dust and it's definitely been used for more than 100 years....there aren't Multiple photos, it's 1 photo exposed multiple times with and end net of 1 photo. This is NOT like HDR where you have multiple photos at different EV and merge, this is 1 photo and shutter actuated on SAME photo multiple times. In other words, there is no "series" of photos to look at....1 photo. Cannot understand why Aperture is having stuch a problem with this when it didn't have the problem with D700 files.

  • Auto advance when tethering in Aperture 3

Does anyone know how I can set Apreture 3 to autoadvance to the newest frame when shooting with a tethered camera? I've looked everywhere and cant seem to figure this out.
    Thanks,
    Dan

Just tested again to be sure since I usually run with auto-advance off. Works as described on a Macbook Pro runnning Aperture 3.2.1 on OS X 10.7.2. Checking/unchecking Auto Select turns advance on or off as expected.
What versions of stuff are you running?
Also are you in full screen mode? I noticed some funny/inconsistent behavior when switching full-screen mode on and off during tethering. Don't have time to spend with it now, sorry. Try it with full-screen on and off and see what happens.

  • Nikon D90 & Tethering with Aperture

I bought the Nikon D90 because Apple says it is supported by Aperture, but
all of the tethering options are greyed out. I have download the Camera
Control Pro 2 and gotten it to work but I can not get Aperture to work.
What am I doing wrong??? Does anyone else have the D90 & Aperture
Tethering working? If so could you please tell me how you got it to work?
    Any help would be appreciated!!

I had the problem with my D80 initially too. Change your USB setting under the SETUP menu to PTP. Then plug the USB into your computer. Make sure you select a/the project you want the tethered shots to enter from your D90 on the import page. Open the tether dialog again and you should be able the "start session". From there, just leave the import page by clicking on the project you are shooting into.
I know love tethered shooting. You can even fire the shutter from the computer, which I didn't know. Good luck

  • Turn off the Auto adjust when shooting tethered in aperture

is there any way to turn off the auto adjust feature in aperture? When I shoot tethered it over corrects and ruins all the shots, then I have to adjust back for the client to get a good idea of the image.

After the disaster of iTunes 11.1 that deleted nearly all my archived podcasts (recovered from backup thankfullly) I was shocked, but not altogether surprised, to see that the option to delete played episodes has been enabled/re-enabled by default.
From the lower right of the Podcasts window click Settings then, if needed, click Defaults, then turn Delete Played Episodes to Off.
Why set the destructive option as the default?
I have many episodes that I want to keep that are no longer available at their feed so the last thing I want is any automatic delete process to be enabled.

  • Consolidate multiple iPhoto libraries to Aperture

I recently purchased Aperture 3.2.2 in order to perform a consolidation of my various iPhoto libraries. I primarily have two libraries, one on my MacBook Pro which contains photos from about the last 2 years (and is about 220GB), and one on my old PowerMac G5 which contains a few more years worth of photos, and size is difficult to determine as that one is partially managed (at about 130GB) and partially referenced (most of the older photos are referenced).
To add to the complexity, I find it very difficult to tell exactly where the referenced photos are in iPhoto. When I go to open a referenced photo that is unavailable, iPhoto gives me the equivalent of a blank stare. If it would at least tell me the expected drive (of the few external Firewire or USB drives I have), I'd be able to connect and point to it.
As I have keywords and stars for quite a few of my photos, I'd prefer to avoid going the route of pulling in the original photos rather than trying to import the iPhoto libraries.
The more recent library (on the MacBook Pro) seems to have imported to a fresh Aperture library successfully. The library from my PowerMac (connected in Fireware target disk mode to the MacBook Pro) got about half way through the import process, and then proceeded to hang in limbo doing nothing but spin.
    Ok so
    a) Best way to bring in the remainder of this other iPhoto library? (just trying to import and not import duplicates does not seem to work, it looks like it's trying to bring in the whole thing again)
    b) Best way to resolve the challenge of finding and importing all referenced images, even if they are residing on unattached drives? Quite honestly I'd be happy to export a spreadsheet of the metadata with photo names, dates, and filepath references, if that was possible, just to know where things are supposed to be as far as iPhoto is concerned.
    Thanks :-)

Referenced Libraries on iPhoto are a bug bear. Referenced Libraries on iPhoto where the library is on one volume and the original files on another are a disaster waiting to happen - or in your case, happening rght now. iPhoto 09 and earlier uses aliases to track the location of the actual file, and these break if you move the file after importing, when the file is on another volume.
iPhoto has no tools to fix this problem.
You're not going to be able to get this material into Aperture until you do.
No point in hoping that iPhoto will magically provide the missing information, you're just going to have to make all the drives available to it. If it still can't find the images then you'll need to use an app like  FileBuddy to fix the aliases.
iPhoto has no ability to export a spreadsheet with the data you require.

  • View content of multiple smart albums in Aperture 3

I'm having difficulty accomplishing the following in Aperture 3.1.3 in Lion:
I'd like to filter content from a folder (of several projects) that includes: One star or greater AND (orientation IS portrait OR aspect ratio IS 16:9). I'd like to view this content ideally as one smart folder to be used for viewing as a slideshow on Apple TV or iPhone.
This nested logic seems beyond Aperture's smart album capabilities (interestingly I can create this kind of logic easily on an iTunes smart playlist) - although it's easy to create two separate smart albums that accomplish this. I thought I could create a folder and then put both smart albums in the folder to view all of the content together, but that doesn't work. I understand that by selecting one smart album and the CMD clicking the other smart album I can see all of the content in the browser, or create a slideshow with all of the photos from both, but I'd like to take advantage of the auto-updating smart folders to just always be able to see the current content from both smart albums - or if anyone has any ideas for creating just one smart album....
    Thanks!

At times Apertures filtering capabilities can be under-whelming to say the least. As you've found out the type of search you are looking to do while easy in iTunes is not possible in Aperture.
cond 1 and (cond 2 or cond 3) type searches can be done as a two step process but unfortunately won't be totally dynamic.
    Here's want you can do
First select all your one star or better images and put them in  a regular album. Then run the OR search on that album.
Like I said it won't be totally dynamic as any new one star or better images will need to be manually added to the album.
    good luck

  • Can you combine multiple Adjustment presets in Aperture?

Is it possible to combine multiple adjustment presets into a single "master" preset setting? I know that I can adjust all the settings on a single photo, and then "lift/stamp" the settings onto multiple photos.
What I'd like to do is have a single preset that has all of my standard NEF (Raw) adjustments setup as a starting point for my D3 photos. From that point, I can then tweak them individually for the final version.
I'm finding that I make the same adjustments (Eg: saturation boost, vibrancy, edge sharpen, etc) on most NEF's out of the camera and I'm looking for a faster way to save all the individual tool adjustment presets into a combined "master" preset.
    Any help is appreciated.
    regards
    Tom

Thanks for the link. I had seen this thread prior to posting my question, as it really just gives other means of using "lift/stamp" to create adjustment presets in a different fashion, using existing images as starting points.
What I'm still trying to confirm is whether there is a way to create a master combination from all/any individual tool presets adjusted. It seems like "manage presets" should give some type of ability to combine the individual tool presets, but so far, I haven't seen how to do so....
