Tilt & shift for video.

Hello,
I´ve been shooting (video) landscape/houses with a 5DMIII. Using an L zoom like EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM to make a panoramic shot rotating my camera slowly with my tripod/video head, Its certain that distortion is present in my footage. Especially with buildings, using the more wide range (16-24mm) of that lens. You know what I mean. Vertical lines moving while the camera rotates.
A friend of mine made the same footage with the EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM and at the 24mm range the distortion is also present while the camera moves.
Now, if I use a tilt & shift lens like the TS-E24mm f/3.5L II will I be able to correct perspective first and start doing my video panoramic keeping the perspective correction? Or this feature is just ok for still photography?
I guess this problem is less evident while shooting landscape from a distance and very present shooting houses/cities from closer points of view (here is my real problem). But I need to register both.
Any help will be very appreciated.
Thank you very much.
Regards.

A T/S lens is not what you want for this.  You want a lens with low distortion (no barrel, pincushion, or mustache distortion).
If you're compositing multiple shots together, you don't need to start with a wide lens. A lens like the Canon 50mm f/2.5 macro has very little geometric distortion, so it's great for taking photos that will be stitched together.
If you're just looking for a lens that won't bend lines as you pan, find an older Canon 20-35mm f/2.8L lens and set it to about 28mm. It's almost perfect at that point.

  • How to create stop/start effect for tilt/shift

Hi I was wondering how to get the animated look I have seen with tilt/shift videos. I want to record my scenes using my Canon 5D Mk2 in video mode rather than use time lapse and increase my shutter count. So after I have shot my video with my Tilt/shift lens I want to create the jittered video effect in FCP, any help would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

you can maybe have a play with the Video Filters > Video > Strobe effect, see if that gets you where you want to go

How to create a Tilt-Shift Effect with Photoshop Touch
Create the impression of a miniature landscape with this popular photographic technique.
    1. After selecting the "Tilt-Shift Effect" tutorial, press "Begin Tutorial" to start. Choose Adjustments > Saturation.
    2. Change the Saturation to about 67% and tap OK
    3. Tap Add Layer and create a duplicate
    4. Choose Effects > Basic > Gaussian Blur
    5. Set Blur to about 10. Tap OK.
    6. Pinch and zoom out with two fingers to reduce the view to about 50%.
Tip: Zooming out before you continue to the next step will allow you to see the entire image while creating a gradient mask for the blurred layer.
    7. Tap the & menu, then Add Fade.
    8. Select a vertical gradient and move the lower gradient handle to the bottom of the image.
    9. Tap the Edit Gradient button to alter the gradient
    10. Move the right transparent spot button to the middle. Add another opacity spot by tapping at the right edge of the gradient slider where the moved spot should be.
Tip: You can remove unwanted gradient spots by dragging them vertically out of the spot area.
    11. Change the new spot Opacity to 100%. The Opacity gradient should vary from 100% to 0% to 100%. Tap OK.
Tip: Tapping a spot on the gradient bar toggles the Opacity slider on and off.
    12. Tap the back arrow in the top options bar. This will prompt you to save. Press Save to save your project.

I'm kind of restricted as to the height and position on the indoors shots. I have my eye on positions but it means climbing up on things and getting into corners but, if needs must.
I was using alpha channels as the angles I've used so far don't lend themselves to making a straight mask. I'll stick with it though, it might look better on just the automated machine with no people.
Maybe being forced into working with odd angles and positions might give the video something unique over the rest, probably not though. I guess there's only one way to find out.

  • The new field blur and tilt shift filters have stopped working

The new field blur and and tilt shift filters worked a few times but are now greyed out in the menus. Any ideas why? Thanks.

Did you check the settings Chris mentioned? Your issue sounds like there might be a video card or driver issue, which can disable the GPU related features and give you a lesser version of the blur filters. See this link for some troubleshooting suggestions. See if issues with the video card have disabled - Edit>preferences>performance use graphics processor.  Also check the advanced settings drawing modes. Be sure you have the current driver (system is updated and current on mac or go to the video manufacturer's website for pc) . That is often the cure.
You might want to copy your system information (photoshop help>system info)  here for us to look at.

  • Problem with tilt shift effect

I have the latest version of Elements 12 and have just started to experiment with the Tilt-Shift Guided Effect.   The problem I'm having is that when I try to change the area of focus, nothing much seems to change in the picture.   Sometimes it seems like the original in-focus area stays in place and I can make small changes elsewhere in the picture.
I was wondering if anyone else was having a problem with Tilt-Shift?
    thanks.

I think I verified what I was seeing in Guided Mode by going to Expert Mode after trying to alter the focus area.   In expert mode I found a mask for the blur layer - and what I saw were 2 gradients rather than just one.   One of the gradients in the mask was where Elements put the default in-focus area, and the second gradient in the mask was where I tried to move the in-focus area to.   I was expecting to find one gradient on the mask, but instead there were two.  Are others observing this same behavior?  Thanks.

  • Tilt shift and other blur adjustment anchors not visible

I have the latest updates for Adobe Photoshop CC. Using the advanced blur filters, such as Tilt Shift do not show any adjustment anchors. If I am lucky enough to run my mouse cursor over them, I get a changed mouse cursor to indicate I came move them. but the references lines, anchor points...nothing is visible to show me where to make the changes or boundaries for such adjustments. I had hoped this bug would be fixed, but apparently not. I am unable to  find any other references to it on the forums so maybe it is just me.
I can run my old Photoshop CS6 and they show up just fine. Any suggestions as to how to fix this?

Or maybe it might be your GPU driver.

  • Tilt Shift has stopped working in Elements

  • 270 degree panorama using tilt shift

I have tried to combine 9 photos taken with a tilt shift lens (each photo is corrected in camera by the tilt shift and in portrait) into a panorama. I cannot get any satisfactory results with the stitching process in photoshop CC 2014. I have tried a combination of options from Auto through to selecting the others but to no avail.  Photoshop can stitch 3 images by selecting perspective option and checking the geometric distortion option.  That apears to be the best it can do.  Can anyone help me stitch the 9 images?  Thanks.

There are stitching applications that do a much better job stitching then Photomerge they were designed to stitch and have controls and features.  Their autostitch mode work better then Photomerge. for example look at Autopano Pro and if you want to go big Autopano Giga.

  • Color shift during video capture (moved from Nseri...

I have noticed that the video camera in my n79 is very sensitive to changes in light.  Often I get a major color shift during a video capture seemingly for no reason, especially when shooting outside.  Is this a defect or should I use a particular setting for video? Current settings are:
    quality: High(TV);
    scene mode:Auto;
    video light: off(shooting video outside during day);
    white balance: Automatic (this MIGHT be the culprit?);
    Color tone:Normal.
Two stills from the same video are attached; the second, a few seconds later, is unnaturally vivid (almost day-glo!).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Wow, what a quick reply!
Delivery was going to be Quicktime HD and probably downconvering to SD MPEG2 for a DVD. I was just going to edit in HDV, since I'm not doing anything fancy, just to try it out as a workflow option (and previews for the client). The first couple of projects I've started on my Macbook Pro though have had this hue shift (I can post an example on-line if need be by filming my monitor...) It's not inherent in the actual captured QT file, just when being played back in FCP. When I export out of FCP the QT file looks great as well. I've never had this problem on my G5 tower with HDV from the same camera or captured the same way. I'm worried that it's the univeral copy of FCP or even worse, my Macbook!
    Make sense?
    Thanks

  • Unsung New Feature:  Tilt-Shift Blur

Have you ever wanted to make a photo seem to have shorter depth of field?  Prior to Photoshop CS6 this was no small feat to achieve digitally and end up with a pleasing and visually believable result.
Photographers know that setting the aperture wide can change the mood of a shot completely.  Sometimes getting the DOF just right can make the difference between an "also ran snapshot" and an award winning photograph.
With today's smaller digital sensors - and even with big sensors if too small an aperture is available - sometimes we get an image that's exposed right, that's composed well, that's caught the moment...  But...  More of it is sharp than we'd like, and the background or foreground is simply distracting.
Enter the new Photoshop CS6 blur filters.
With the Tilt-Shift variant, one can progressively blur pixels based on a definable gradient/mask, so that we get that familiar progressive front-to-back blur change.
Armed with this powerful new capability, and with the subject masking/separation facilities we've had for a couple of versions now, this becomes possible:
    1.  Separate subject from surroundings with a good mask - e.g., quick select, refine edge, make a new layer with just the parts you want to remain sharp showing on it.  A good mask isn't difficult to make any more!  Hide this layer when done.
    2. Remove the subject, at least around the edges, from the background layer underneath, e.g., by selecting using the above mask, expanding the selection, and doing Content Aware Fill and/or Cloning.  This is important because in the subsequent blur operation we don't want parts of the sharp subject blurring into the background.  That just looks weird.
    3. Use Photoshop CS6's Tilt-Shift Blur to visually shorten the DOF in the background layer, with the center point and unblurred region set to coincide with the position of the subject in the shot.  Adjust the settings to taste, which isn't as much of a crap shoot any more since the blurs actually update in real time on screen.
    4.  Make the layer above visible, maybe do some things with the lighting (which is fairly easy, now that subject is separated from the background), and voila, a whole new feel to the photo.
    Consider this example...

    Thanks.
Any idea why we can't use them as Smart Filters?
No idea, other than the possibility that the Adobe people struggled so hard to get all the new functionality done in time for release that they didn't have time to think about the finer points of integrating the new designs into the existing features.  It's not the only instance of this kind of omission.
Noting that this new concept of the blur functions acting more like a new "mode" of Photoshop than a filter plug-in...  The workspace changes, but instead of popping up a whole new UI, we just stay right in Photoshop.  You and I might agree that such an implementation change should have been designed to work smoothly together with all the existing facilities, but I get the distinct impression that Adobe doesn't feel that level of compatibility in every new design is as important as we do, and may simply have not thought all the implications through - incredible as that may sound.
Some new stuff doesn't work with actions, other stuff doesn't work with smart filters, still other stuff works differently when accelerated vs. non-accelerated...  One could be forgiven for getting the impression that the Adobe team was just barely capable of delivering the features they have here, vs., delivering a well-designed, completely integrated, well-tested solution.  Part of that is that it's 13.0, but I think part of it must have to do with them being tasked to do too many things with the funding they have.

  • Incorrect and Un-Changeable 'Video Kind' for Videos Purchased From iTMS

Since I can't seem to find any other way to contact Apple except through paid support channels, their suggestion is to post something here. Hopefully this re-wording of other posts I've read will shed more light on the problem.
    To Apple:
Some videos purchased from the iTunes music store have an incorrect 'Video Kind' which means they are sorted incorrectly in iTunes using Apple's new interface in version 7.
Old Battlestar Galactica episodes have a 'Video Kind' of 'Movie' instead of 'TV Show', so they don't appear in the iTunes smart category as TV shows. They appear in 'Movies', and they shouldn't.
The field for these files is locked/ghosted/unchangeable, I'm assuming because of ridiculous DRM requirements or an oversight. But you are enforcing rules which cause your program to incorrectly sort files, and not allowing your customers to fix the problem.
I want all my TV shows to list in your 'TV Shows' top category, but I can't change the 'Video Kind' for those files (bought via the iTunes music store). I have expected this problem to work itself out in the last few iTunes updates, but it hasn't yet. And there are many threads about this in your discussion forums.
Please unlock the 'Video Kind' field in iTunes for videos downloaded from the iTunes music store (Prison Break Season 1, Battlestar Galactica, The Office Season 1, Surface, etc), or give us some kind of utility that will allow us to correct the mis-categorization.
    Thank you!
    -Tony

I quite agree. I'm not sure how much attention, if any, the iTunes dev. team pay to these groups however. The formal feedback route is via iTunes Feedback, where sadly, I suspect, not much attention is paid either.

  • 'Best for video' greyed out in displays prefs

I finally got my macbook(blackbook running 10.5.8) hooked up to my lcd tv (i have been using my old eMac for this a while) & I'm fooling around with the settings to optimize performance & for some reason the 'Best for video' is greyed out in System prefs/Displays but the overscan function works(both in extended desktop mode & in video mirroring mode. I have always used this function on my eMac (OS X 10.3.9) without any problems. For now I'm using the apple mini dvi to video with an Svideo cable until i can afford to go either the hdmi or vga route, but I'd like to optimize this at least..anybody have a clue why 'Best for video' would be greyed out & how to fix this? could this be because of the Intel GMA 950 Gpu chipset in this generation of macbooks? I have posted to a few forums in the last few days with no answers so far...Anybody?

I wouldn't worry too much about that setting. I believe all it ever did was set up a difference between blanking and black level, sometimes called "pedestal" in TV/video terminology. It's no big deal. You are probably correct that the GMA950 doesn't support it, so it's grayed out.

  • Dual 17'' Displays and an NTSC Monitor for Video Editing

I am trying to hook up two 17'' apple monitors and an NTSC television monitor for video editing, but all I have on the back of my G5 tower is one ADC plug and one DVI plug. Any advice on how to make this work would be greatly appreciated.

If you run in anything other than the LCD's native resolution your graphics card will be resampling the image. This inevitably distorts the image as pixels must be discarded to create the display. Typically this softens the image.
