Timbuktu/Comcast/Airport Extreme

Hello,
I am trying to setup my airport express to allow me to connect using timbuktu from a remote site. Both computers are OS 10.4.6 and I have setup port forwarding on 407 when I try to connect remotely I get the computer not responding error. Internally I connect just fine. Any help would be apprecated.

I am not sure to be honest. The port mapping screen that I see has no way to designate udp or tcp.

  • Comcast & Airport Extreme Correct IP Address?

Apple Support had to help me setup my new Airport Extreme Router, as it turned out, due to a Comcast Internet problem in my area. Everything appears to be working correctly now, however, what is the correct default Apple Extreme IP Address?  I found an article that stated 10.0.1.1 is not a valid IP address.
Please note, I am able to connect to the internet with my 2 laptops (wired or wireless), plus my iPhone, plus my Printer (USB connected to Airport Extreme), plus my DVD player and ROKU.
    Thanks

Thanks for that quick response.  Trust me, after the poor Apple Tech person had to work with me for an hour to get this working correctly, I am NOT touching it!
We couldn't get the Airport Extreme to recognize a valid router address - had to unplug the Comcast Ubee modem, take out the battery & we finally also disconnected the coax cable on the 3rd try.  3rd try was a charm & this has been fantastic for 3 days now. Then I found out there had been an issue with Comast Internet in my area, which may have caused us the setup heartache.
So thanks for answering and I am happy with the setup as is.

  • Comcast, Airport Extreme, Headache

I have The Airport Extreme. It worked at first. No problems at all. But for the last week or so, it has not been working. The Comcast ethernet works. If I plug it into my computer, I have Internet. The airport card in my computer works. If I go to Barnes and Noble, I can pick up their Internet (for a price of course). But for the last week and a half, I get no Internet from the Airport Extreme. Any advice? I miss my wireless!!

Try resetting your AirPort Extreme Base Station. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451)

  • My airport Extreme just stopped assigning IP addresses to wired devices

I have an fairly large home network that is run by an Airport Extreme.
    - Comcast Cable Modem for 3 public (not static) IP addresses
    - small switch to be able to obtain three addresses
    - Apple Airport Extreme connected to the switch and it receives an IP address and internet connectivity from Comcast
    - Airport Extreme connected to a 16 port Cisco switch to handle the wired connections in the house.  I have 54 ports of which 9 are currently in use.
all wired devices connected through the wall and a patch panel to the Cisco switch.
The issue is that after working flawlessly for about a month (just moved into this house) it stopped today.  any device going through the hardwired Cisco Switch is no longer getting an IP address from the Airport Extreme.
I replaced the switch with a second one to see if that was the failure and it is not.
I unplugged the Cisco Switch from the Airport Extreme and plugged devices directly into the Airport Extreme 1 by 1 and they were able to obtain IP addresses.
I need more than the three ports available on the Airport extreme.
What changed and what do I do?

I unplugged the Cisco Switch from the Airport Extreme and plugged devices directly into the Airport Extreme 1 by 1 and they were able to obtain IP addresses.
This tells you that the AirPort Extreme is working correctly and the issue....whatever it is....is appearing after the AirPort Extreme on the network.
    A few thoughts:
You have tested the ports on the AirPort Extreme and they are working, so the next step would be to disconnect the Ethernet cable that runs from the AirPort Extreme to the switch at the switch, and then connect a laptop to the Ethernet cable to check to make sure that you are getting a good IP address that way.
If you cannot, then you have a bad Ethernet cable between the AirPort Extreme and switch that will need to be replaced.
If the laptop is getting a good IP address when you run this "test", then you know that the AirPort Extreme and Ethernet cable are working correctly and the troubleshooting focus must now move to the switch.
Check to make sure that you have an unmanaged switch. Or, if it is managed design, that it has been configured to operate as an unmanaged switch.
Next, connect the Ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme to the switch and disconnect all of the other Ethernet cables that are connected to the switch and test each port one by one with your laptop and a spare Ethernet cable to make sure that each port is working correctly.
If you cannot get a good IP address on your first test with the laptop connected to the switch, then you know that you have a misconfigured or defective switch.
If the switch checks out OK when you test each port, then the next step is to connect one of the Ethernet cables that runs to another area, and connect your laptop to the Ethernet cable to make sure that the cable is working correctly.  Continue to test each Ethernet cable the same way.
About 95% of the time in issues like you are having, the problem is bad wiring somewhere on the network, even though the "tech" said that he tested everything. The trick is to find it....when there are no shortuts.

  • Do I need my Airport Extreme with my Comcast router?

    Hi all,
I have an Airport Extreme - it's about four years old.
I also have Comcast Xfinity, but will likely switch to the business service - 75mb down, 15mb up. I just bought a Mini to use as a server for our home and business use.
Here's my question:  Should I be using the Airport Extreme at all?  I thought about buying the newest model, as I'm sure it's much faster. I have two computers connected through the AE using Ethernet, and I am not sure if I can do that with the Comcast box (can't look right now)
Any advice for me?  Thanks in advance.
    Hugh

Thanks for the pictures and link to the Arris manual.
You wrote that your Extreme is about four years old. If it is a dual band model that was first produced in March, 2009 it conveys the advantage of its ability to simultaneously create both 2.4 and 5 GHz wireless networks, while the Arris can only create a 2.4 GHz network. 2.4 GHz can be crowded and is susceptible to a variety of other interference whereas 5 GHz is less so. On the other hand, the Arris has a battery backup feature which enables its use, if only for a few minutes, during a power failure. The Extreme's LAN ports are also Gigabit - it's not clear if the Arris's are.
Therefore, each one has its advantages, but technically you do not need an Extreme unless your 2.4 GHz wireless performance is unacceptable, if you want to use the Extreme's "Guest Network", its Gigabit ports, USB / hard disk sharing, or its other attractive features. A genuine Apple AirPort Base Station is also required to fully implement some features particular to Mountain Lion, such as the ability to wake a sleeping Mac and use it remotely over the Internet. In addition to those, the current production model conveys the new 802.11ac wireless protocol which may become more important as wireless devices continue to proliferate.
The decision to upgrade your Extreme would be justified if you require any of those features, but if your network needs are satisfied with your current equipment, there is no pressing need to change anything.

  • How do I maintain my Airport Extreme network with my new Comcast wireless gateway?

    Hi all,
I've just signed up Internet access through Xfinity. Today, they sent me a new wireless gateway, which I am willing to use. But I would also like to maintain the network I've currently been using, which is an Airport Extreme hooked up to our DSL modem. Currently, I have a Brother wireless printer, our TiVo, and a Roku streaming stick on this network, as well as all of our Macs and mobile devices. I have been reading about "bridge mode," and selecting this mode once my AE is hooked up through the Ethernet cable to our new wireless gateway seems like the way to go if I'd like to keep the AE network I have now. Then, I can select either the new Xfinity network or the AE network, depending on my need. Is that correct? Will I have to reassign all of these peripherals to the AE network once it's been placed in bridge mode, or will they all be able to find that network automatically once the AE is plugged into the new modem/router? Also, is there a way to connect the AE to the new Xfinity equipment wirelessly, or is it best to connect through Ethernet? I have probably betrayed my ignorance more than a few times in this post, so please be kind and explain it to me like I'm a seven-year-old. Thanks in advance for any and all help!
    -B

Call Comcast and ask them for instructions to configure their "wireless gateway" as a simple modem. Sometimes the terminology they use is "transparent bridging". Have them walk you through it, since all such devices are configured differently. It is usually through a web page but you will need a password to change its settings. You ought to turn off its wireless network also, so ask about that too.
Then, you will have essentially what you have been accustomed to using: an Extreme connected to a box with an Ethernet cable, doing everything it used to do when you had DSL. Your AirPort Extreme is almost certainly a better router than whatever junk Comcast supplies, and to reconfigure it as a bridge would remove all the features that make it so.
You probably won't need to change a thing on your Extreme, other than to unplug it and plug it in again after reconfiguring the "wireless gateway".

  • New Airport Extreme (Jan 2007) with Comcast Cable Network

Im a total NOOB. Please excuse my poor knowledge of Routers and the like.
I really need some advice from the MAC community to steer me in the right direction. I want to give as much information as possible in order for you folks to help me down the right path.
    CURRENT SET UP:
    (3) Apple Computers in 3 bedrooms. (1) iMac Core2 Duo, (1) iMac Core Duo, (1) eMac G4. All have built in wireless cards from Apple.
Broadband Cable Internet from Comcast. Cable comes from wall directly to a Motorolla Surf Board Wireless SBG900. The Wireless Motorolla Cable Modem sits on the floor in the corner of one bedroom. All 3 computers work perfect. Never drop a signal. All very fast connections. No Internet or sharing issues at all. I also decided to add the "Plug in" Airport Express. This has an HP Color Laser Jet Printer pluged into it via USB. All 3 computers print and share seamlessly to it. Set up is a breeze. No issues what so ever with anything.
    QUESTIONS:
    (1) Should I eveen bother with the New Airport Extreme Base Station or just leave everything as it is?
    (2) Is there ANY benefit to adding a Airport Extreme Base Station? I'm I missing out on anything?
Please be honest. Anything wrong with my current setup?
    Thanks.

I don't think there's anything wrong at all with what you've done. The bottom line is do YOU find any faults or disadvantages to your set up? As far as the new Extreme, things would just be alot faster (for those 802.11n enabled computers only, though)

  • AirPort Extreme can't find Comcast DNS Server

I have a relatively new AirPort Extreme Base Station router purchased from BestBuy in 4/2014 along with a new Motorola modem receiving Comcast Blast! internet service (because I have no other option as a San Francisco resident).  I am running OSX 10.9.4 on a MBP retina but this problem affects all devices on the network, hard-wired and wireless.
My internet has been working fine since initially configuring the router and modem but the other night the internet simply stopped.
A full reset of the modem, router in the proper order, while waiting an appropriate amount of time to release the IP returns me to the same "disconnected" state (see attachment).
Since the internet is able to be obtained by connecting directly to the modem, Comcast blames the router, refuses further support and suggests calling Apple.
The Airport Extreme appears to be in perfect working order and I tried restore it to factory setting several times to no avail.  The peculiar thing is that occasionally following a restart via the menu in AirPort Utility, the internet briefly becomes available and then disconnects.
This has been on of the most frustrating consumer experiences I have ever had on many levels mostly because after several days, I still am at a loss for a viable solution which is compounded by the fact that I am a computer scientist working in tech, not a helpless, technology-illiterate person.
I do not know enough about DNS Servers to pinpoint why the server appears to refuse internet when it notices the router.
Are there any configuration settings I can try on the advanced dialogs (ie switching from NAT/DHCP to only DHCP)?
Please help.  I still have no internet.

There is a bad bug with some Motorola modems with the ethernet on the WAN port.
It is simply not connecting properly. What modem is it??
It is not uniform.. but it happens to a large enough number of people that there is a fair number of threads about modem issues and the newer airports.
Please do a search yourself here for experience with your particular model.
But you have blotted out the very info I need to help you.
I need to see IP address and DNS.. if you are on dynamic IP it makes no difference to post it.. you will have a new IP tomorrow.
I have suggested a work around in using a crossover cable or a small 10/100 switch between the modem and the airport.. it helps for some.
There is also some more info you can get using the natutil command from terminal.. particularly it will show the WAN link speed.. which I want to force down to 100mbit.
Terminal command to check Apple router status. natutil
No luck return the airport to apple for checking / replacement.. or bridge it and buy another router.. this isn't hard and Apple will doubtless produce a new firmware that might fix it if it isn't some nasty hardware thing.

  • Trying to connect airport extreme to comcast provided ubee modem. Light on airport green, but no internet access.

Attempting to connect ubee d3.0 comcast modem to airport extreme base station.
Light on airport will go green, but I cannot connect to the internet.
I'm sure it has something to do with DHCP/NAT - as the airport extreme is getting an IP address, but then assiging a 10.x.x.x IP to my computer
but attempts at putting it in bridge mode just causes the light to go yellow and give warning of "No DNS Server" and "No internet connection"
I am able to connect to the internet when I connected directly to the modem.
    I'm running OS 10.8.5
previously had DSL modem and connected after a few easy tweaks of the NAT settings before. am unsure what the issue is on this on... have used up my rather limited tech knowledge.
    any thoughts?
    Thank you!

Attempting to connect ubee d3.0 comcast modem to airport extreme base station.
Light on airport will go green, but I cannot connect to the internet.
Ubee provides both cable modems and gateway devices. What is the model number of yours?
I'm sure it has something to do with DHCP/NAT - as the airport extreme is getting an IP address, but then assiging a 10.x.x.x IP to my computer
By default, the AirPort Extreme would performing as a router with both NAT & DHCP enabled. Also, it would act as a DHCP server for the local network and provide out Private IP addresses in the range of 10.0.1.2 - 10.1.1.200. The WAN-side IP address of the Extreme should be a Public one and provided to you by your ISP via the Ubee modem. Did you perform a "factory default" reset on the Extreme before attempting to connect it to the modem?

  • Recommendations for Comcast-approved modem to be used with AirPort Extreme?

Any recommendations for modems that work well with Comcast and AirPort Extreme? If there are ones that work well or ones to avoid, I'd like to know.
Here's Comcast's list of approved modems:
    http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/

The motorola sb6120 is what I used with great success. It's a docsis 3.0 modem so it's capable of the latest high speeds that comcast can offer. Good luck!

  • Problems with Comcast (Motorola) modem and Airport Extreme

I have a very strange problem which I have been unable to solve, nor able to find a solution on Apple Support or anywhere else by Googling it.
I switched back to Comcast/Xfinity, hooked up the Motorola surfboard SB5120 modem:
My primary Macbook Pro connects to the Internet, but (and this is bizarre!) the AirPort Extreme is flashing yellow with the errors listed as a) no Internet conncetion, and b) no DNS server
All other Wi-Fi devices are *unable* to connect to the Internet; they are connecting to the home network, but nothing else.
I did a "hard" reset of the AE, and setup the home network from scratch, same problems:  one Macbook connects, nothing else does.
I have power cycled everything multiple times (even unplugging EVERY cable for 30 minutes, then reconnecting), spent the better part of 6 hours trying tor resolve this.
    Any other settings to change?
    In AirPort Utility colors:
    Green for Internet
Flashing Yellow for AirPort Extreme (errors: a) no Internet conncetion, and b) no DNS server)
    Green for AirPort Express
    sub-menus:
    1) Internet, set to "DHCP", nothing listed for IP Address; the Subnet Mask and Router Address have assigned numberes; the last three windows are empty.
    2) Wireless, set to "WPA2 Personal"
    3) Network, set to "Off (Bridge Mode)
Any solutions would be most welcomed - the idiot at Comcast was insultingly unhelpful.  He said that since I was able to successfully connect to the Internet, and that the modem was successfully pinging back to Comcast, that the problem was with the AirPort Extreme.

Many thanks for your reply.  I think number 3) below gets to the crux:
    1) The MBP is on my network, for sure, not a neighbor's.  I'm doing all of this wirelessly, though tested the modem via Ethernet to make sure the modem was working.
    2) I reverted to the Verizon DSL modem, it did a handshake with the AE, and all the computers were successfully connected in seconds.
    3)  Network set to "Off (Bridge Mode)" is how all the computers are successfully connecting via Verizon, so what am I doing wrong when using Comcast?  If I set it to "DHCP and NAT" or "DHCP only" I would have to enter a range of DHCP addresses (Comcast's *might* be 192.168.100.1, but not entirely sure (any help on that - might solve the problem?)
Extreme/Express - that was a mistake.  I'm solely using an Extreme for this setup, though I also have an Express, I've temporarily taken it out of the network to try to resolve the issues.
    Thanks again!

  • Airport extreme and Comcast

I can't seem to get my (new) airport extreme to work. I have internet access (via Comcast) when I go directly from the router to my Mac. When I plug it into the airport extreme unit, I get the green light, but my Mac can't seem to find the signal. Any ideas?

That Comcast modem needs to be completely reset to be able to issue an IP address to the AirPort Extreme.
Power off the modem completely by pulling the power cable from the back of the device or from the wall AC socket. Pull the battery as well if it is easily accessible.
Let the modem rest for 30 minutes
Power off the AirPort Extreme as well and leave it off
After the power down period, reinstall the battery if it was pulled, start the modem first and let it run for 5 minutes by itself
Then, start the AirPort Extreme the same way
Check the network and report on your results.

  • Can i use my airport extreme as a modem with comcast

can i use my airport extreme as a modem with comcast cable

No, since there is no modem on board an AirPort Extreme, so you will need to use an outboard modem if you want the AirPort Extreme to have Internet access.

  • Vuze + Airport Extreme BS + Comcast ISP

I recently switched to Comcast from ATT. I have never had a port or NAT problem with ATT using Vuze or other P2P. As soon as Comcast was installed, my ports are closed. I have gone through the port forwarding again and still nothing.
I disconnected the airport extreme and hooked directly into the Comcast modem (which also has telephone) with my MacBook Pro via ethernet. The port is open doing it this way, no problem. As soon as I reconnect the AE, it is closed again.
Why is the modem not allowing the AE to open the port? Or how do I configure differently? Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for the help. I've searched the web for answers and others have had these issues, but as soon as they fix them they do not report back how they fixed it!

    HI Russell,
I think VUZE is the issue. Their site indicates the requirements are 10.4.8 and up but that doesn't mean it's compatible with Snow Leopard even though it says Intel based.
