Time capsule 1st generation upgrade

I have a 1st Gen TC 500 GB.  Does anyone know how big of a HD it will hold?  some are saying 1 TB only and another guy said he used a 2 TB Hard Drive in his with no problems.  That is the 1st time someone has ever said they used a 2 TB HD for upgrade.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, I just can't afford  to get a New TC at the moment and would like to just upgrade my HD and learn a few things.

Answered in your other post.. but the TC A1254 will take 3TB drive.. with ease.

Watch the firmware revision.. read the whole thread before you start out.
Also remember this model has a very dodgy power supply.. putting in that very large drive may tip it over the edge.. so in your calculations include not just the cost of the drive but the cost of a repaired power supply or much better, using an external supply.
http://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modems /apple-time-capsule-repair/cisco-adp-30rb-4pin-molex
Is one example.. you can buy the supply and do it yourself if you can do basic soldering .. its not hard.
Cost is about $30 for bits.. a repairer will do it for around $100.

  • Time Capsule 1st Generation vs 4th Generation

    Is there a compelling reason why I should upgrade from a Time Capsule (1st Generation) to the latest when my current TC is functioning flawlessly?  I've got a house full of Apple Devices;
    - Time Capsule 802.11n (1st Generation)
    - AirPort Express 802.11n
    - iPod touch (1st Generation)
    - 2x iPhone 4
    - iPad
    - iPad 2
    - Apple TV 2
    - MacBook Pro 13" (Mid 2009)
    - iMac 27" (Mid 2010)
    - MacBook Air 13" (Mid 2011)
Are there significant performance improvements with the Time Capsule (4th Generation) and/or Airport Extreme (5th Generation) over the Time Capsule (1st Generation?
Thanks in advance for the advice/recommendations!
    Brian

The major difference between the two versions is that Generation 2 and higher products allow simultaneous dual band wireless operation.
Your Time Capsule will produce either a 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz network, but not both simultaneously. Since you have iPhones connecting to the network, you are using the 2.4 GHz band.
Most of your newer devices are capable of connecting at the much faster 5 GHz speeds, but if you set your current Time Capsule up to operate at 5 GHz, the iPhones and iPod will not be able to connect.
A newer version Time Capsule produces both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simultaneously, so faster devices would connect to the 5 GHz band and slower devices connect to the 2.4 GHz band.
That being said, there is also something to be said for leaving well enough alone. Your call.

  • Time capsule 1st generation - extension with air port extreme

My parents use a time capsule (1st generation) as wireless lan device. As they run a boarding house they wish to provide free internet access to all of their guests (in all rooms). Therefore I bought an air port extreme station to extend the network as this product now (finally) includes the option »guest network«.
The question is the following: *Should I keep the time capsule as basic device connected to the modem and use the air port extreme as extension or do you recommend to set it up vice versa?*
I checked the range of the time capsule: It can be used in already in the first floor but not in the second anymore.
I am really unsure how I should approach this topic and I hope more expirienced users can provide some help to this issue. Maybe you can also give me some security advice. In order to protect kids from misusing this new possiblity I was thinking of using opendns to block certain websites. Maybe there are also betters ways of doing this?

    Need a bit more info.
Now this is what happens when I plug it in:
Plug it into power?? The main router?? Sorry I am unclear what you are plugging it into.
It sounds like you have not done the setup.
The TC should be in bridge and plugged into the current modem router you have.. and powered on full time.
If you cannot access it via the utility, I strongly suggest you buy the apple usb to ethernet dongle.. which helps air people no end.. or use any other computer that has a real ethernet port.
Otherwise set to factory and start over. (this will not do anything to what you already have on the disk).
Hold in reset and power on the TC.. wait about 10sec until the front led rapidly flashes. .then you can connect the computer.. and do the setup.. choose bridge in the Network section of the utility and update the TC.
Then you can plug it into the main router and access it and internet at the same time.. either by TC wireless or the main modem wireless.
Please note. .Gen1 TC is only going to last very little time.. it is already well past the average lifespan.. many died at 2years.. most gone by 4years.. plan on storing nothing important on it.

  • Time capsule 1st generation loosing Internet connection

I have a time capsule 1st generation on my iMac. Since I updated to Lion, my time capsule started to flash orange every hour or so… it's extremely annoying and I really have NO idea what to do.
Here's some specs and configuration for my network
    Firmware: 7.5.2 (75200.14)
    Wireless Security: WAP2 Personal
Allow this network to be extended CHECKED
    Channel: Automatic
Radio Mode: 802.11n only (2.4GHz) - I tried on 5GHz only and I had the same problem.
    Multicast Rate: 6Mbps
WPA Group Key Timeout:  1 hour - I tried 1 day, 10 days, X months, doesn't matter, problem still here
Create a closed network - UNCHECKED - Because the mac mini keeps on "forgetting" the network and it ***** to remember such a long password so I decided not to hide it anymore
Since the time capsule is pretty close to my computer, I use an ethernet cable but everything else in the house is Wireless (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Mac Mini, apple tv, Macbook Pro and Macbook)

I found out that if you are already in airport when the problem starts, it doesn't update the message but the light gets amber and you loose connection for more or less 15 seconds.
I got this issue again this morning, opened up airport and got 2 messages... then it went back online as if nothing happened. It's doing this every single hour.
Since I can't plugg on wifi only since I ALSO get the "No Hardware Installed"  message in wifi, I have to be plug with the ethernet cable
Am I the only one starting to REALLY hate Lion or what? None of this was happening on Snow Leopard...

can i set up my Time Capsule 1st generation with airport 5.5.3?

Yes, if you are asking about AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows.....and you are running XP SP3 on your PC.
    AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows
If you are running XP SP2 on the PC, then you will need to use AirPort Utility 5.4.2 for Windows

  • Slow wifi on time capsule - 1st generation

Connection 802.11 N -    Cox ISP -- I am getting 98mb down directly out of the cable modem.  However on WIFI my speed is cut nearly in one-half -- 54 mb down.  I have reset the time capsule (version 1).  I checked on 2 MacBook Pros (10.6.8) and both have the same result.
The specs on 802.11 N call for up to 150 MB speed ---- is 54Mb all that this is capable off?
    Thank You,
    Alex

The first thought that comes to mind is that a 1st Gen Time Capsule is at least 5 years old and possibly almost 7 , so it is amazing that it is still operating at all. In general this model suffered from power supply issues.
The power supply on this version of the Time Capsule is likely not putting out anywhere near the voltage that it did when it was younger, so that would be a logical reason to suspect that the WiFi signal has weakened significantly.
Here, I am assuming that you have the Radio Mode on the Time Capsule set to the factory default setting of 802.11n/g/b. If you are not sure about this, post back for more instructions.
To test the Time Capsule, locate your laptop about 10-12 feet, or 3-4 meters from the Time Capsule with clear line of sight to the Time Capsule and run a few more speed checks. If the Time Capsule continues to deliver in the 50 Mbps range, that is all that it can do.

  • Time Capsule (1st Generation) and Airport Express (ver 6.3) issues

    Hi,
I am trying to extend the reach of my time capsule with the airport express. I have allowed my Time Capsule Network to be extended, but can not see any option on Airport Express setting for other than "create" or "join" a wireless network. Is it something that didn't exist in older models or am I doing something wrong? Can anyone help?
    Thank
    Bulent

Unfortunately, the older Express model that you have does not have the "Extend a wireless network" option.
That feature was introduced on the 802.11n version of the Express in 2008.

  • Time capsule (1st generation) like a wifi repeater?

    Hi,
I'd like to use my time capsule like a wifi repeter.
    How i must configure it?
    Thank you

I have just purchased a new Airport Extreme to take advantage of the new wifi AC functionality.  I currently have my old Time Capsule connected via Ethernet cable to the Extreme.  I have it in Bridge Mode with the wireless off so that it is just a back up device.  My son has an older ipad that does not work in some parts of the house.  The Airport Extreme is in the basement and provides great coverage for everything except the ipad.  My wife would rather I did not clutter the main floor with more wires and devices so I am trying to avoid moving the Extreme from its current position.  I was thinking I could run a long Ethernet cable to the time capsule and reposition it in a different part of the basement to hopefully cover the ipad deficiency.  What are the settings for the Time Capsule to make this happen?  From what I have been able to tell from other posts it needs to still be in bridge mode, but I am not sure what the wireless settings should be.  New wireless network? extend wireless network? Do I keep the wireless name I created with the new Extreme?  Thanks

  • Wifi problems ipad 3rd and Time capsule 4th generation since iOS 8 upgrade

Does anyone have the same issue?... I have wifi problems betwen ipad 3rd generation and Time capsule 4th generation since iOS 8 upgrade. Solution: I must switch on/off airplane mode in order to start using Wifi...

It works ... removing and reestablish the wifi connection works. Thanks ...

  • How do I setup my Time Capsule (3rd Generation) to be accessed from the internet while I'm traveling?

How do I setup my Time Capsule (3rd Generation) to be accessed from the internet while I'm traveling? It is installed on my home network behind my TWC broadband router.

Ok.. since the TWC modem is also a router.. all configuration takes place on this box.. NONE whatsoever takes place on the TC.
There is no airport utility 7.7.3 but there is a firmware of that number for the latest AC model TC..
    Is it tall like this.
    Then it is Gen5.
otherwise it will have a firmware.. 7.6.4 or earlier and the airport utility must be 6.3 or earlier.
Open the Airport utility and give us a screenshot of the summary page.
That will also help us determine that you have the TC, which version and how it is setup.
You might want to press the edit and also give us the Internet and Network tab as they should be set correctly as well.
I have created a DDNS through DYN.com although I am not sure how to implement this into the TC.
You do not do anything in the TC.. set it up in the Ubee router.
Port forward 548 to the TC in the Ubee router.
And make sure the TC has a static IP in the Ubee router.
Overall if you find this too hard I strongly recommend you buy a product designed for remote access .. eg WD MyCloud.. they are cheap and easy peasy to setup for remote access.. by PC or Mac and since it is built outside of Apple you not bound up in Apple limitations built into all their equipment to prevent you using it the way you want.. rather than apple want you too.. eg BTMM and iCloud being the only way apple provide for access to the TC and only when it is the main router of the network.
You are fighting hard because Apple made this hard.. not easy.

  • Will I be able to extend a dual band network from a Time Capsule 2nd generation with the new Airport Express on both bands?

My Time Capsule 2nd generation is the main accesspoint in my house. It resides on the second floor in our living room. On the first floor in our kitchen I have an fairly new Airport Express that extends my network on the 5 GHz band and allows me to stream music via Airplay. I had to choose 5 GHz since the 2,4 GHz band is interfered when using the microwave oven. However, we have a rather old house with loads of metal in the concrete walls and therefore the 2,4 GHz signal from the second floor proivded by the Time Capsule is hardly available on the first floor. Since all our iDevices (iPhones and iPods) operate at the 2,4 GHz band we sometimes don't have a proper wi-fi connection. I had tried before with another (older) Airport Express that only operated at the 2,4 Ghz band, but I could get a proper connection between the Time Capsule and the Airport Express. Therefore I think it would be the best solution if the new Airport Express would provide both bands simultaneously.
If I replace my existing Airport Express with the new one, will I be able to extend my network on both bands?

It sounds like you may have configured your Time Capsule to use a separate name for the 5 GHz network and then setup the Express to extend that specific band.
In order to extend both bands, the Time Capsule setup will need to be changed so that both bands are using the same name. In other words, you would uncheck the option for the 5 Ghz name.
Then, setup the new Express to extend the Time Capsule network.
This is the only way that they Express can extend both bands. It cannot extend both bands if you have assigned a separate name to the 5 GHz network since you will be forced to choose either the 5 GHz band or the 2.4 GHz band for the Express to extend.
How the microwave oven will affect this is not known. This will one of those things that you have to try in your home to know if it will work well, so it might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy....in case things do not work out as hoped.

If it's nonsense to tell me, don't tell me anything else.
In Apple Store Time Capsule version 4 has a 3GB hard drive. And for an electronics technician like me, this is not a problem to do this work.

  • Time Capsule Hard Drive Upgrade

I was wondering if anyone has upgraded their Time Capsule? And if so,  I would like to know whats the safest way to do so. Thank you in advance.

I upgraded the hard drive in my 1st-gen TC about one year ago.  I followed the directions at http://www.applefritter.com/node/23907 and found it very easy.  You don't say which generation of TC you have, but I doubt the later-gen ones are much different.  The most important tip was to use a hair dryer or heat gun to soften the glue holding the rubber pad on the bottom!
Perhaps the hardest part will be selecting a drive.  Mine works perfectly, but some people's upgraded TCs would not "spin down" or put the drive to sleep when idle, like the original TC/drive does.  This seems to depend upon the drive you put in (and maybe the version of TC?).  There's a long discussion of it here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1059249
The best bet seems to be Samsung SpinPoint F4 EcoGreen 2TB HD204UI
    Good luck!

  • Time Capsule Hard Disk Upgrade - how can I move old backup to new HD

Yesterday I bought a new 3TB hard disk to replace the old, internal time capsule 1TB hard disk. Then I placed the old one in a 3.5" USB case and tried to move the TM back-up from the old HD (now usb connected to the mac) to the new (now)-internal HD of the Time Capsule (connected with ethernet to the mac).
I'm using mavericks, and I followed this guide, but something went wrong and the migration stopped during the night, forcing me today to start a new backup from zero.
I deeply googled, looking for a guide that could explain how to complete the upgrade without a glitch, but there are infinite number of guide on how to change hard disk, while a totality of zero guides on how to complete the migration process after upgrading the internal HD.
Has someone succeeded in doing all the process?
    System Information:
              • • OSX Version - 10.9.1          • • Type of Mac - MacMini mid-2011
              • • What's being backed-up - 501,74 GB
              • • Backup Location - Time Capsule - WiFi (usually - but Ethernet during migration process) - 2nd generation, Model A1302 1TB (now 3TB).
P.S. Do you have any suggestion for "Impossible to convert __. Installa newer version of iWork." It happens all the time i try to move Backups.backupdb from a USB HD to a new one (yes, I remove the check mark from "Ignore ownership on this volume").

I don't see anything you have done wrong.
The fact that it started to copy the file and you left it running is fine.
Where things go wrong from there is anyones guess.. did the computer just decide to go to sleep?? Have you turned off sleep and any auto shut down. That can affect copying of large files.
Did you verify the sparsebundle.. any error or corruption in the old sparsebundle could prevent it copying.
    See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
It could be later firmware which IMHO is just not stable.. I would run no later than 7.6.1 in an old TC.
And of course Mavericks.. it uses an major change of networking protocol.. and so it could just decide in the middle of the night that the TC is no longer there.
forcing me today to start a new backup from zero.
Can I just say.. this is a better idea anyway.
Put the old disk in a draw.. and simply keep it for 6months and if you never need it by then .. you can wipe it and use it for something else. A clean fresh TM backup is far more likely to work properly in case you need to do a recovery especially if you upgrade installed Mavericks.
