Time Capsule 3rd Gen no longer sees External USB drive

Airport Utility 7.6.4 installed and no other updates are specified as avaiable.
For a while the external drive with two 1T Mac formatted partitions cannot be seen by network nor appears in Disk section of Airport Utility.
Mavericks used and all fully up to date.
Connecting drive to iMac and MBP directly allows use of the drive fine.
I think the firmware has stopped the external drive from being recognised. Did have the "USB Power"  amber light occur some time ago but selected to ignore. External drive is powered of course.
Any ideas?

A Gen3 TC the USB port is seriously underpowered.
A powered hub is the first essential item to get this working. The fact that your disk is powered is insufficient.. I think also because of the limited number of USB devices the airport utility can work with.. even some powered hubs are simply not recognised.
For a while the external drive with two 1T Mac formatted partitions cannot be seen by network nor appears in Disk section of Airport Utility.
Mavericks used and all fully up to date.
The disk must appear in airport utility.
From there getting disks mounted in Mavericks can add another level of pain.. but recognition comes first.
The latest firmware is more likely a step backwards than anything.. I would downgrade the firmware to 7.6.1. Factory reset. Use all SMB naming, ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.

  • How do i set my time capsule up to function as an external hard drive

How do i set my time capsule up to function as an external hard drive? Is this even possible? I had a friend tell me it woudl be a good set up to get a time capsule with my Macbook Air to use as a gigantic external hard drive but then was unbale to wlak me through the setup after I bought the equipment. Any suggestions?

It depends on what you already have equipment wise..
    Just bridge the TC..
I cannot walk you through it either if you use v6 airport utility.. due to my refusing to run Lion until it gets network issues sorted.
Download and run the real utility http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
    Go to manual setup..
    Internet tab
Connection sharing.. select off bridge mode in the drop down box.
You can then if you like turn off wireless under airport wireless.. The TC is now a plain network client with hard disk.
Personally I would keep the wireless on but sort the channels manually if you already have a wireless AP or router.

  • I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

Can i add a normal usb driver?
Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
It will work as fast than time capsule?
No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.

  • Can a time capsule store a movie from an external hard drive then allow that movie to be played on an iPad on the network?

Can a time capsule store a movie from an external hard drive then allow that movie to be played on an iPad on the network?

I don't use ipad for this so i am just googling.

Anything that will play from Samba network file store..
You will probably also need filebrowser loaded on the ipad to find the files.
Is the ipad necessary btw.. ?? If you only want to play the file to your TV you can buy a WD Live TV.. unlike the Apple TV it is a media player.. and can play files of almost any format direct from the TC.

  • After receiving "identical" Time Capsule 3rd gen replacement, my iMac no longer sees my HP LaserJet2420 that my previous Time Capsule enabled seeing

I no longer remember how my USB-connected HP laser printer was seen with my iMac connected through Time Capsule.  Oddly enough, my iMac also no longer sees the printer when connected directly to iMac.  What the heck happened?  They used to work fine together!

A printer that is directly connected has to be recognised to be installed..
I guess the first thing to do is open system profiler and check that the USB is recognising the printer.. If so then the issue is purely drivers.. if not it is bad usb cable.. bad usb port.. bad printer. Plug it into the computer via a powered usb hub.
If the USB does see the printer but the drivers don't work.. I stand by the comment.. delete all printers and start again.. multiple printers can mess things up equally as well as old drivers.. especially if you did an upgrade install.
What a shame you didn't buy the network version.. in the future.. never buy usb.. always buy network printers. Any printer called a workgroup printer without network is a contradiction in terms.
Once you get it working on the computer then you need to start all over again to get it running on the TC again.. man ethernet or wireless printer looks better and better all the time. usb .. shudder.

  • Need to backup Time Capsule, (3rd Gen) 7.6.1 used as wireless router and network drive

I use Time Capsule, 802.11n (3rd Gen) 7.6.1 (1Tb) as a wireless router and a network drive. I do not use Time Machine at all. How do I create a backup of the files housed on the Time Capsule to an external drive?
Also, why does the use of Time Capsule as a network drive seem to be such an usual configuration? The configuration makes sense to me, aside from the inability to automatically back up the Time Capsule itself to a cloud or other drive, which, to me, is what really makes no sense at all. Is there something else I should be using? I'm not too familiar with the wisest way to set up a home network. I just know I like to wirelessly have access to my files from multiple computers within my household as opposed to saving files on any one computer locally.
Thanks for your assistance and advise!

You could connect a USB hard-drive to the USB port on the TimeCapsule and Enable Disk Sharing on both the TC's Built in Drive as well as the USB connected one.
Then these drives can be mounted using finder and files copied between them as needed.
The main advantage of time-machine is - automation(like you mentioned) + to be able to go back in time - i.e. ability to restore files from a certain date/time. Multiple versions are available for restore.
Also in Mountain Lion - You can restore your mac from a time machine backup very easily - it is one of the options when you boot to the Recovery Partition (ditto when you boot ML from DVD/USB)
    Hope this helps.

  • Moved drive to USB Port on Time Capsule and TM no longer sees backups

I moved my FireWire attached HD from a direct attachment to my Mac Pro to attached via the USB port on my Time Capsule. Time Machine now wants to start over, and does not see the previous backups.
The destination drive name did not change, other than the added NAS address.
Is there a way to force TM to use the previous backup set incrementally instead of starting over?
    Thx

unfortunately, it's not that simple. TM treats backups to directly attached drives differently vs. networked ones.

  • Apple TV 3rd Gen no longer sees Airport Express 1st gen in Airplay after update

Apple TV 3rd gen was connected to AirPort Express 1st gen via WiFi, drove a video device via HDMI
and sent audio to the AirPort using Airplay and selecting the AirPort Express under Speakers.
I could adjust the volume with the AppleTV remote.
Apple TV was stored unused for a while.
After powering on yesterday, I ran the update.
Now Apple TV is connected to the Airport Express via WiFi
but Airport Express doesn't show in AirPlay settings.
I can still use AirPlay from my MacBook running Snow Leopard.
There are no updates available for the AirPort

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • Invalid IP address on time capsule 3rd gen

I can connect to the internet via the modem but when I try to connect via the time capsule (both wired and wireless) AirPort Utility tells me 1) I have an internet connection problem: invalid IP address adn 2) I don't have DNS server address
Anyway to fix short of restoring the from original settings?
    thanks

It sounds like you are using Lion with v6 utility.. and that is at least partly the cause of the trouble.
Download and install 5.6 if you use Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Now you need to decide which device will be the main router.. as there should be only one router in the network.. either the modem has a router.. most do now.. or the TC will be the router.. don't use two. Something has to be bridged.
So if you have cable modem.. pure modem that is excellent. TC will be the router.
If you have adsl it is generally also a router.. that can either be bridged or you can run the TC as pppoe client.
Tell me exactly what you have for broadband.. and if it is working as router or not.
Assuming it is working as router.. you need to bridge the TC.
Reset the TC to start.. we want to get a fresh go at this.
As stated.. in the 5.6 utility.. go to manual setup.. select the internet tab.
On the bottom of the page select connection sharing.
    Select option.. off, bridge mode.
    Update the TC.
It is best to do this with ethernet.. direct to the TC.. you don't need any other connections to set it up.
But if you normally use wireless then setup wireless as well.. much easier when connected NOT by wireless to setup wireless. Otherwise it is like sawing off the branch you are sitting on.
I recommend wireless name.. short, pure alphanumeric with no spaces.
Separate name for 2.4 and go to the advanced wireless page and give a different name to 5ghz.
Lock channels to 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 ghz .. 5ghz does not matter so much.
Set wpa2 personal security with passkey.. 8-12 characters pure alphanumeric.. no spaces.
Once selected and updated.. plug the TC into the main modem - router with ethernet.
Connect I guess using wireless from the computer.

  • Using time capsule to backup FCP files on External Lacie drives

Has anyone done this with any measure of success? I have my FCP projects on 3 to 4 external Lacie drives and I want to back them up onto my 1 TB TC. It seems TC only backs up the internal HD and not external HD's. Is my only option to drag the data onto TC without any hope of a regular back up?
    Any suggestions would be helpful
    Thanks

Unfortunately I won't be able to tell you too much about time machine. I don't use it. I use another utility to clone my internal HD once a day. I use Carbon Copy Cloner which is scheduled to do an "incremental backup" (only what's changed since the last sync) every day at 4 pm. You could do this same sort of thing via Time Machine. It's just a slightly different paradigm as far as back up strategies go. So it's sort of an either/or: Time Machine vs. CCC.
Then, you'd use ChronoSync to handle the external to Time Capsule. Actually you could use ChronoSync to do the internal to Time Capsule as long as you're, basically telling it to, "make this folder look just like 'this other' folder". ChronoSync can do it all as long as you're NOT talking about making and preserving bootable clones. If you're only trying to do a bunch of "mirroring" then ChronoSync could be "one-stop-shopping".
    Hope that makes sense.
Not sure about "drobo"? Google search leads me to believe it's an external Hard Drive? If so, no. I haven't used it. But there's no reason why ChronoSync wouldn't talk to it and function just fine.

  • Time Capsule disconnects when I connect my external hard drive

All my software is up to date, but when I connect my Western Digital external hard drive to the Time Capsule's USB port, the Time Capsule disconnects from the internet, my PC (which is connected via ethernet), and my MacBook Pro (via wi-fi). Sometimes it'll work okay for a few hours and then just goes incommunicado later in the day. If I remove the external hard drive from the USB port and restart, I have no problems. But once I plug it back in, it happens all over again. What's going on here?
Message was edited by: Ed Rocker

That'll work as well, just not as convenient when you are on the go. You may want to pick one of these up as well. (not sure which plug you need, but there are a bunch of different ones on ebay).

  • Is my time capsule take the place of an external hard drive?  I need to make space on my MacBook Pro.

Tried to load Lion.  My MacBook Pro says I need to clear out some space - start up disk in nearing full.  Can I save to my Time Capsule?  How?

If you're already using the Time Capsule's disk for Time Machine backups, it's not recommended to also use that disk for other things.  You'd probably be a lot happier with a disk directly connected to your Mac.

  • New Time Capsule (802.11ac) issues reading files on USB drive

My 802.11ac Time Capsule reguarly fails to read .mp4 files stored on an external HDD drive connected to the Time Capsule via USB. All the files were tested as working when they were copied over, then for some unexplained reason the Time Capusle refuses to recognise them when they are accessed at a later time. This happens for about 1 out of 3 files (sometimes more). All the files are .mp4 format video files. Detacthing the Seagate drive from the Time Capsule and connecting it directly to the MacBook Air fixes the problem and allows the files to be read and played normally – this indicates the problem is with the Time Capsule, not the Segate drive.
    Symptoms;
    1) iTunes generates a file error with trying playing the video from iTunes,
    2) selecting the file from Finder no longer generates a playable preview thumbnail as the Finder preview box remains blank (white),
    3) attempting to play the file from Finder generates an unrecognisable file error in QuickTime,
    4) connecting the external drive directly to the MacBook fixes the problem (the file can be read and played normally),
    5) the files remain readable after reconnecting the external drive back to the Time Capsule, however the problem just reoccurs again later.
My normal use case is playing movies and TV programmes from iTunes to my television via Apple TV. Apple TV plays the video files over WiFi from the iTunes Library on my MacBook Air. The video files in my library are physically located on the Seagate external HDD attached to my Time Capsule.
I use a mid-2012 MacBook Air 13" running Mountain Lion 10.8.5. I have an 802.11ac (2 TB) Time Capsule (latest firmware 7.7.1) with a Seagate (1 TB) GoFlex drive attached (to the Time Capsule) via USB 2.0 (USB powered). The Seagate is my media drive and holds all my movies and TV programmes (all in .mp4 format). Both drives are Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with single partions. Time Capsule network is set to Bridged mode to resolve double NAT. I have an Airport Express extending the wireless netowrk to my MacBook Air. Prior to errors occuring, all files tested ok as follows; file plays ok locally on MacBook Air, files play ok from Finder after being moved to the Seagate, files play ok from iTunes library (pointing to Seagate).
Disk Utility verifies the Seagate drive has being OK. No other network issues.

    Problem Solved!
The 1TB external HDD attached to my Time Capsule was divided into 2 equal partitions. The first partition used to be my Time Machine backup which I deleted and made available as free space. The second partition was the one I was copying to. It seems the Time Capsule has a problem with blank partitions on an external HDD. Once I repartioned the drive into a single 1TB partition, everything worked fine and my Time Capsule no longer crashes.

  • After update to 7.4.2 TC no longer shows external USB drive

Took me a long time to find a solution to this.
I came to make an archive of my Time Machine backup with a WD My Book 1TB drive connected to the USB Port on the TC. This WD drive has a large partition (MAC OS Extended Journaled) for the TC Archives and a smaller (FAT 32) partition for my Windows files (I have Vista running under VM Ware Fusion 3.1.1). I had done this twice last year with no problems and my Windows data still backs up using WD Backup Application to the Windows partition with no issues., however this time in Air Port Utility there was no USB disc available to archive to and when I looked in Finder only the Windows Partition was visible. I disconnected the WD drive from the TC and connected it to the iMac direct and both partitions were there but not when I connected it to the TC. Eventually I decided to downgrade the TC to firmware rev 7.4.1 and everything is now working fine.
This Firmware update has been available for several months so why has Apple not done anything to fix it? The later update 7.5.1 only works with the newer TCs so have they abandoned support for the early 2009 version?

    Welcome to Discussions Big Apple!
Since you did not state which model of TC you are dealing and stated that 'The later update 7.5.1 only works with the newer TCs...' I'll have to assume you have the A1254 (MB277) and I have no ideal as to why 7.4.2 shouldn't work (I have 7.4.2 on my A1254). Using Airport Utility go into 'Manual Setup' and click on the Disks icon at the time; then click on 'File Sharing' and see if either 'Enable file sharing' and/or 'Remember this password in my keychain is checked.
    Best to you!

Under System Settings/ Sound, I no longer see my Yamaha Audiogram 3 listed as an input OR output device. When plugged into the USB connector, I have power to the device. I tried a different USB port... same thing. I reloaded the driver, rebooted still no luck. Any help is appreciated.
