Time Capsule 5 GHz Stopped Working

I've had my 2nd generation Time Capsule set up to broadcast in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and has worked fine since I got it.
This morning the 5 GHz stopped working. Airport Utility doesn't give any indication of anything wrong and the 2.4 GHz continues to work as before.
I've turned it off and on a few times and have tried reconfiguring the 5 GHz set up but nothing seems to fix it.
Any ideas what could be wrong?

The Gen1 and Gen2 TC both have major power supply issues....
See https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
And just Google for dead time capsule..
Your TC is in the declining years.. it suffers from senility problems.. as the power supply gets worse I expect the number of issues to increase.
Now, whilst it is still a goer.. is a really good time to buy a new TC.. wipe the old one after copying any files you want and ebay it.
You will then see how the financials of limited lifespan technology really works.. planned obsolescence.
Anyway if it happens again.. flash back .. it is easy.. when you go to the firmware update area.. hold down option key.
It is even easy in v6 utility.. which is normally nightmarish.. Simply hold option when you select version in the main screen.

Does anyone have a better suggstion than waiting for apple to return my call? 71 days with no back ups and my new 2T unit stopped woprking after a month and living in the Turks & Caicos Islands there is no locoal support (I bought the unit from APple in Miami) According to the diagnostic tests I ran the unit is shot and needs replacing.. Wireless works fine though.. Seems to be a common problem with this unit. Would ahve been better off with my old airport extreme, I ahve had for five eyars, but it no longer hs enough capacity.

What signal is it picking up? Are you joining wireless network? If so don't.. it is really poor way to run things.
Is it connected to a cable modem? Full router or just a modem type?
    Try a reset?
Plug in via ethernet.. turn off everything.. wait 5min then restart cable modem.. if that doesn't work, give it a longer off cycle.. 15min or overnight.

I'm not sure if you understand that 5 GHz has some upsides, but also some very significant downsides.
The upside is that the 5 GHz signal will allow faster speeds.
The downside is that you must always give up something in order to gain something else.Unfortunately, the marketing hype about 5 GHz does not go into very many details about this.
In the case of 5 GHz, the 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so they do not travel as far or penetrate any obstructions like walls or ceilings nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals. In many cases, in order to get good 5 Ghz performance, you literally have to have almost a line-of-sight relationship between your computer and the wireless router.
If you have a new dual band router, which broadcasts both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simutaneously, your Mac will connect to the best signal quality automatically depending on its location in relation to the router. In the same room, without any obstructions, it will connec to 5 GHz. But, take the laptop down the hall a few rooms and around the corner and the Mac will connect to the 2.4 GHz signal because at that location, the 2.4 GHz signal is not only stronger, it is also faster.

  • Time capsule now does not work with Lion just installed.

Just downloaded Lion to Mac Air. Time capsule now does not work. Where is the problem?

Restart the TC.. lion is stupid.. it forgets what it is connected to with alarming frequency ... like someone suffering dementia.
If it continues to have issues, plug the TC directly to the lion computer by ethernet (if not already) and try again. Change the wireless to manual in airport utility and change the wireless name.. to force a new configuration. Once setup you can just use wireless.
In the end you may need to reset the TC.. just hold in the reset button for about 10sec. It should then become available.. a reset does not do anything to data on the hard drive but you might need to restore any passwords.

  • I live in europe. Does a time-capsule bought in usa work in europe?

I live in europe. Does a time-capsule bought in usa work in europe?

Yes, but you cannot select your country.. so some channels work that shouldn't and other channels that should don't.. there are major differences not so much at 2.4ghz but at 5ghz.. which is more important for AC routers.
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
So the US one is now and always set to US wireless regime.

  • Is Time Capsule a product that works?

I moved from Windows to MAC since I was tired from debugging and troubleshooting.
Time Capsule is reminding me of the old days; maybe because it is a time machine!
Since I bought it in March 2008, I had so many issues from initial backup interrupted and so on. Now and since a months it is not backing up and it takes more than one hour preparing for backup until an error message that comes at the end saying either time capsule is read only or a problem was found that could not be fixed.
I want to know how do I format this think and start fresh? or am I wasting my time since it will work for one week and then stops again? Pls. not all firmwares are up to date.
    Thanks,

Here's what an Apple Tech did with me today. #1) In Airport Utility make sure that all names for our TC and Net have only 8 characters or less, with no spaces, apostrophe's or underscores. #2) Make sure in Finder Prefs you check the box that says "show connected servers on desktop". #3) If you've never gone into your System Prefs "Sharing" folder and put something in the Computer Name Box (such as what you call your HD), TC/TM will not know what it is they're supposed to be making a 'disk image' for; that's the main reason for that error. Hope it helps!
(PS, there seems to be an issue with 'overheating' of TC, I've taken the advice of many of the faithful and am now using a USB flatfan underneath my TC; and have propped my TC up an inch with short stacks at the 4corners) good luck!

  • My time capsules 2.4Ghz doesnt work.

    Hi everyone,
All of a sudden, noneof my devices that work on the 2.4Ghz freuquence can access the wifi on my time capsule.
Only my iPhone, iPad and Macbook Pro can access the wifi network..
My network camera, my wifi printer and an old windows laptop can non longer see the network.
Settings for the time capsule are default as it was when I purchased it.. I tried hard resetting it with no luck.

I suggest that you download and install a utility like iStumbler on your Mac....if you have not already done so.  iStumbler 99
Run the application to see what the utility displays about your Time Capsule dual band network. You should see the name of your wireless network displayed twice if both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands are operating.
The 2.4 GHz band will be using a channel in the range of 1 to 11.  The 5 GHz band uses higher numbered channels.
If you cannot "see" the 2.4 GHz network, try a Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule.

If still no luck, it is time to take the Time Capsule to an Apple Store.....if you have one in your area.....or contact Apple support directly.

  • I am going to buy a time capsule it it will work on European 220v as the Mac Book Pro does.  Can anyone tell me if it does when you use a plug adapter.  Thanks

Will the Time Capsule work on European 220v if it was bought in the US.  Do you need a transformer or just a plug adapter?  Thanks

The Time Capsule will run on 100-240 volts and 50-60 Hz so you only need a plug adapter, not a transformer with this device.

  • HELP ME PLEASE: MY TIME CAPSULE IS NO LONGER WORKING FOR ME

Due to a recent move,  my Time Capsule doesn't seem to have the range & strength that it once did.
    - A Local Internet Provider (MEDIACOM) installed their Router for our Internet/Internet Phone Service.
    - Due to the required use of the Provider's Router, I had to set my Time Capsule in "Bridge Mode" to function.
    - Although my computer can recognize BOTH (MEDIACOM & my Time Capsule) networks, I select & use my Time Capsule for my Home Wireless Network.
    - It seems to me, that in "Bridge Mode" my Time Capsule doesn't have the range & strength that it once did. For whatever the reason, I need to increase my Wireless range.
    - I ONLY use the Wireless WiFi (My Home Network) to access my e-mail/Internet from my iMac or IPAD.  All "other" Internet access (streaming) is done through my TV system, which is hard wired to the Internet.  Again, the Internet is hard-wired and directly connected to the TV's receiver. Thus, there isn't a huge demand for my Wireless Home Network. It's also password protected so nobody else is using it.
    - I will admit that I'm now in a much bigger house (about twice as big as the previous home).  Also, I usually have to access it on the opposite end of the house.
How do I extend my Wireless range? Any suggestions, How To's, or useful websites would be most appreciated. In other words, what hardware do I need to purchase & how do I set it up?  My Tech knowledge is very limited. I think the solution will need to also be wireless because the distance is to great for ETHERNET.  That is, unless I can use what is already wired into my home.  For example, I'm told there is a CAT 5 Access point (whatever that is) very near the vicinity of where I need wireless access.  Would the purchase of another Time Capsule potentially solve my problem?

Due to a recent move,  my Time Capsule doesn't seem to have the range & strength that it once did.
It must have the same strength it always had. .but the new environment blocks or absorbs wifi.. some houses are like a black hole.. nothing gets out.
    - It seems to me, that in "Bridge Mode" my Time Capsule doesn't have the range & strength that it once did. For whatever the reason, I need to increase my Wireless range.
Being in bridge or being in router mode makes no difference whatsoever to wireless output.. however range is affected dramatically by environment and perhaps by operating next to a much higher wireless power device in the Mediacom router.
How do I extend my Wireless range?
If I give you useful sites.. apple mods will delete my posts.. so you should google yourself for "extend lan"
That is, unless I can use what is already wired into my home.  For example, I'm told there is a CAT 5 Access point (whatever that is) very near the vicinity of where I need wireless access.
This is the best method.. you do not need another TC.. plug the existing one into the Cat5 access point on the wall.. plug the other end into any LAN Port on the Mediacom router.. and as long as the cable is in good condition it will work great.
Make sure you are doing the setup correctly.
    You bridge the TC.
You also create a wireless network.. it can be the same name as the mediacom router or different .. that is up to you. You do not attempt to extend the wireless.. this is most important.
Try it now.. all you need is a patch cord or two.

  • I set up a new airport time capsule. Most devices work fine however now my apple tv 2nd gen won't work.

I set up a new airport time capsule. Most devices connected fine however now my apple tv 2nd gen won't work. I turn it on and it searches for time and date but goes no further. I can't by pass it either. Any suggestions?

I can't by pass it either. Any suggestions?
Does that mean you cannot move it to the TC and plug in by ethernet? What does bypass mean?
I would still move it closer to the TC.. and just trial it there. Range on some AC models for 2.4ghz is worse than old one. For some people.
Another thing to try is fixed wireless channels.. one of the very few options still available in the AC model.. lock the 2.4ghz to 11, 6, 1 .. try it in that order.

  • Could Time Capsule be able to work connected to an Alpha R36 router with 3G based wifi net?

    Hello everyone from Spain.
I live in a rural area and we don't have any internet connection apart from 3G. I bought an Alpha R36 3G-wifi router and I was able to create a 3G-based wifi networkat home. Despite, when I tried to connect my Time Capsule to the router to enhace my wifi network I wasn't able to do it. I had no problems creating my own wifi network with Time Capsule in the city, but I can't use it at home. Could you help me? I don't know if it's possible to do it and how to do it.
Here is the link of the router:
    http://www.alfa.com.tw/in/front/bin/ptdetail.phtml?Part=R36&Category=0
    Thank you very much!

Make sure you plug the TC into the LAN port of the alfa. Bridge the TC so it does not route, leave that to the alfa, and just use the TC for wireless network. Since you are doing that, turn off the wifi in the alfa and just use the TC. That should then work fine.

  • First time capsule backup never stops and shows insane progress numbers

We've bought a 1TB time capsule and are trying to get the first backup done.
It's backed up a lot of the first Mac (a MacBook Pro with a 200GB drive with about 170GB used).
Because we did it over the wireless LAN this took a long time, and it went away more than once, requiring a backup restart. (By "went away", the MacBook lost connectivity to the time capsule a few times, requiring a Mac reboot to fix, and our AirPort actually crashed once.)
After a few iterations it gets to apparently being nearly done. However, it now never completes. It says (after a very long indexing period) "backing up 128MB of 128MB" and both those numbers slowly count upward. Forever. We've done tens of GB in this way - there's no indication of what really remains to be backed up or what is actually being backed up, such a log window of filenames.
We are at an utter loss as to what is wrong or whether we're close to success at all.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
It sounds like your main problem is a bad WIFI connection. Time Machine should be able to recover from a failed or interrupted backup, but it can take a long time, even if your WIFI is working well, as it may have to spend a lot of time figuring out where it was.
I'd suggest cancelling the backup and connecting your Mac to the TC via an Ethernet cable until you can get the first backup completed. It's much faster, even when your WIFI is working well.
Once that's done, you can try to improve the wireless connection, and address the other problem.
The ever-increasing size is likely a result of other changes being made to your Mac during the backup. After the first "pass," TM checks for this, and will do a second pass. Normally, of course, this is very small and quick, but some things can cause what you're seeing. Unfortunately, it's difficult to diagnose until you get that first backup completed -- if it continues to happen on subsequent backups, you can see just what's being backed-up. See #9 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for some common apps that can cause this, and a way to determine just what it is.

  • Time capsule base station not working with Airport Express

    Hi...
I have a network setup using the airport base station hat is part of my (older) time capsule.  I also have an older Airport Express.
My network is working fine...and looks like the first image below.  When I plug in the Airport Express and reset it...I get what you see on the second image.  The thing is...the airport utility is supporting the base station just fine prior to looking for the airport.  I presently have airport utility 6.3.2 and my airport base station has firmware 7.6.4.
    Any help would be great....thanks!

Your express is a G wireless model and not compatible with the N wireless TC.
You can use it but only by using it with ethernet and setting it up as AP.. you also need to use 5.6 utility not v6.. apple removed support for G wireless devices from v6.
    LOL..
    I was 2min late.
